Puss in Boots
Once upon a time, in a land of kings and ogres,
there happily lived a miller with his three sons. Until one day …

in the summer heat, with his cat by his side,
the miller fell off his seat, he kicked up his feet … and he died.
To the eldest son went the mill, and he milled away with pride.
The second got the donkey, and seeking fortune he did ride.
And to the youngest son went the cat. He sat on a stone and sighed.

The cat heard his moan and said, “Master, don't groan.
I'm worth more than the mill and that old bag o' bones.
Give me a feather to put in my cap, some boots of leather, a cloak and a sack.
A thousand times more, I shall pay you back.

The young man arose and got the cat's clothes.
And into the boots, the cat put his toes.
Goodbye now, Master, In a week I'll be back,
and soon neither fortune nor wife shall you lack.

The cat was quick and soon caught a rabbit,
He put it into his satchel and set off to the castle.
He laid out the rabbit with a bow to his Highness,
'A gift, great King, from the Marquis of Carabas.”

The next day, too, turned out to be pleasant.
The cat was quick and soon had a pheasant.
He put the bird into his satchel and made his way back to the castle.
He laid out the pheasant with a bow to his highness.
“Another gift, dear King, from the Marquis of Carabas.

Day after day, amid hollers and hoots,
into the court came Puss in Boots.
Rumours were flying and flew faster and faster.
So the king asked the cat ,”Who is your master?”

“He's a kind, handsome, young man and very loyal to you.
He has horses, land and a castle, too.
Give me your hand, in his name I kiss it,
And he asks you, please, to pay him a visit. “

The cat hurried home and told his master what happened.
“But they will see I am poor,” And he became very frightened.
“Just leave it to me,” said the cat with a grin,
”and tomorrow I will teach you how to swim...“

Next day by the bridge, when the king's carriage crossed,
Into the river the young man was tossed.
“Help!” cried the cat, “the Marquis can't swim!”
The King stopped the carriage and sent his men in.

Soaking wet from his head to his toes,
The queen ordered servants to bring him new clothes.
When the young man was dressed, the queen was impressed,
and her daughter, the princess, was too.
“After a rest, please be our guests,”, said the cat, “ at the castle for rabbit stew”

The king was curious, the young man was furious, but Puss in Boots knew what to do.
“Master, don't think,” said his cat with a wink, the ogre's castle belongs to you!”

The cat went ahead to the mean ogre's castle.
He knew he would have to be very careful.
He knocked on the door and the ogre came out.
“What do you want?” the ogre asked with a shout.

“My Lord Ogre, people talk about what you can do,
you can change into a lion or elephant, that's true,
But they talk about what you cannot do, too.
To change into a mouse, well that's too small for you!”

The ogre got angry, and his shouts filled his house.
So, just to show Puss in Boots, he turned into a mouse.
Now Puss in Boots had reached his goal...
He jumped on the mouse and ate it whole!

When the others arrived, the cat bowed to his highness.
“Welcome to the castle of the Marquis of Carabas.”
The young man was amazed but still played his part,
For the lovely princess had stolen his heart.

Her heart, too, was filled with laughter
and thanks to Puss in Boots,
They lived happily ever after.
