A newborn baby survived an unexpected trip down a train toilet bowl after a pregnant Indian woman gave birth rather sooner than expected.
The baby was born two months early on a moving train while her mother was visiting the toilet – and fell down onto the tracks below.
Her mother, who fainted after giving birth, said she was not even aware that the baby had fallen down the toilet.
"My delivery was so sudden," said Bhuri Kalbi, 33, from Rajasthan.
"I did not even realise that my child had slipped from the hole in the toilet.
"They stopped the train and ran on the tracks to find the baby," she added from her hospital bed in the western city of Ahmedabad.
Railway staff at a nearby station were alerted and soon found the newborn girl lying uninjured on pebbles by the track.
She is now in intensive care because of her premature birth, doctors said.
Most toilets on Indian trains are filthy chutes emptying directly onto the tracks.
