Szia,

Remélem kellemesen telt a hosszú hétvégéd!

Nézzük is! Jó tanulást!

Üdv,
Nóri

The Toy Testers

Read the text and answer the questions.

Write a maximum of five words for each answer.

My son and I are standing in a big, red-carpeted room filled with shiny, brand new toys. We stand for a few seconds taking in this feast of potential fun, then Ed, who is two and a half, looks up at me, his wide eyes seeking my permission to make the next move.

‘Go on then, Ed,’ I say, and Ed’s little legs carry him off into the chaos of joyful madness as a class of other nursery-age children and their parents fill the room at the Museum of Childhood in London. Today it is being used to recreate a ‘Play Fun Lab’, where the leading American manufacturer of toys for pre-school children tests its educational products. It is where psychologists, educational experts and marketing staff watch children interact with the latest creations to check that toys are aimed at the appropriate age range so that children can work them properly. Adults are not always there to help them, after all.  It is vital to check the toys meet the highest possible safety standards. There must be no possibility that the children could hurt themselves. In addition it is known that repetition is important for learning, so Play Fun also aims to make toys that children will want to play with again and again.

Ed and I tried out ‘Busy Popping Pals’, designed for children of nine months and above. On it are five levers that open doors to reveal different animals. The levers operate differently and require the child to develop manual dexterity.

Ed can manage the levers okay so when he pops up a figure, I test him on his knowledge of animals too. ‘It’s a panda,’ he cries as a black and white bear is revealed. There’s a wide selection of animals so I don’t imagine Ed would tire of it too soon.

Another educational aspect to Play Fun’s toys is the notion of cause and effect, which helps develop problem-solving skills. We try this out with the ‘Busy Ball Popper’. Children push a red button, which sends coloured balls flying out. Ed laughs as the balls pop out. However, the machine only works in spurts of about twenty seconds. If children want it to continue, they must reload the balls and push the button again.

Psychologist Jean Piaget said that a child must invent to learn and that seems to be the case here. Playing should help with everything from developing motor skills to counting, as well as colour and animal recognition and creative play. Not only were those toys educational, but Ed and I had fun too.
