A there is és a there are kifejezéseket akkor használjuk, amikor azt akarjuk elmondani, hogy valami van valahol. A there is kifejezést egyes számban, a there are kifejezést pedig többes számban használjuk.

Láthatod, hogy a képekhez tartozó két mondat nagyon hasonlít egymásra, és tulajdonképpen a jelentésük is megegyezik, ugyanarra a kérdésre felelnek:

What is/are there + hely ( pl. on the table/next to the house/on the street, stb.)?

What can you see + hely (pl. on the table/next to the house/on the street, stb.)?

Az ilyen there is/there are típusú mondatokkal soha nem válaszolhatsz olyan kérdésre, amely úgy kezdődik, hogy ‘Where…?’. A where, azaz a hol kérdőszóval kezdődő kérdésekre egy másik mondatszerkezettel válaszolunk:

Where is the book? The book is on the table. – Hol van a könyv? A könyv az asztalon van.     

Where are the children? The children are in the garden. – Hol vannak a gyerekek? A gyerekek a kertben vannak.           

Mivel a fenti mondatokban pontosan megmondtuk, hogy mi hol van, ezért nem kellett a there is/there are szerkezetet használunk. A there is/there are szerkezetet akkor használjuk, amikor azt akarjuk kifejezni, hogy valami(k) van(nak) valahol. Nézzük az összehasonlító példákat:

Ha a mondatot a helyhatározóval kezded, akkor mindenképpen a there is/there are szerkezetet kell használnod. Ha a főnév elé határozott névelő jön (the), akkor nem a there is/there are szerkezetet kell használni, viszont ha határozatlan névelő van a főnév előtt (a/an) vagy simán névelő nélkül többes számban van a főnév, akkor a there is/there are szerkezetet kell használnod!

Since I moved abroad, I usually visit my hometown about once a year. This year, I was in town for about two weeks at the end of July and, of course, we had a family get-together. It was not a family reunion, as there was only my immediate family, but still there were at least 25 people who showed up.

These get-togethers are always held at my parents’ house, because they have enough space to accommodate many people. We never have formal dinners. Usually everyone brings something to eat or drink. This year, for example, my aunt Mary, prepared a huge tin of lasagne, while my uncle John brought cakes and ice-cream cones. Unfortunately, while we were having dinner, there was a blackout, so I and my cousins had to go to get some ice to keep everything cool till the electricity was back on.

There is always a lot of talking and laughing. This year, as always, we brought up old childhood memories and funny anecdotes. It’s really great to be a part of such a big family!

This week, as they are on holiday, the Taylor family is enjoying their free-time. They always get up early, but this week they are getting up late. Easter eggs are special eggs that are often given to celebrate Easter or springtime.

The oldest tradition is to use dyed and painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery

The custom of the Easter egg originated in the early Christians of Mesopotamia, who stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ, shed at his crucifixion.

The Christian Church officially adopted the custom, regarding the eggs as a symbol of the resurrection in 1610 A.D.

In Christianity Easter eggs symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus. Though an egg appears to be like the ‘stone’ of a tomb, – a bird hatches from it with life, so the Easter egg for Christians is a reminder that Jesus rose from the grave and that those who believe will also experience eternal life.

But the practice of decorating eggshells is ancient, pre-dating the Christian tradition of Easter.

Eggs, in general, have been a traditional symbol of fertility, and rebirth. Ostrich eggs with engraved decoration that are over 60,000 years old have been found in Africa. Decorated ostrich eggs, and representations of ostrich eggs in gold and silver were commonly placed in graves of the ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago.

Easter eggs have inspired the form of many similar objects – both precious and mundane, including chocolate eggs, monuments, and the famous Fabergé eggs.

Hello! My name is Amanda Summers. I’m a licensed nurse. I work at the General Paediatrics Unit of Norfolk General Hospital. We do 12 hour shifts, so sometimes I start work at 7 am and finish at 7 pm. Today I’m doing a night shift, so I start work at 7 pm and finish at 7 am. I’m working with Mr Jones tonight, who is a surgeon, and Mrs King, who is a registered nurse.

British people have their biggest meal in the middle of the day, and some have it in the evening. Most people today have a small mid-day meal, usually a sandwich and perhaps some crisps and some fruit.

They have three main meals a day:

Breakfast

They eat it between 7:00 and 9:00

Lunch

They eat it between 12:00 and 1:30 p.m.

Dinner

Sometimes it’s called supper. This is generally the main meal, they eat it anytime between 6:30 and 8:00 p.m.

On Sundays the main meal of the day is often eaten at midday instead of in the evening. This meal usually is a Roast Dinner consisting of a roast meat, Yorkshire pudding and two kinds of vegetables.

Nowadays a typical English breakfast is more likely to be a bowl of cereals, a slice of toast, orange juice and a cup of coffee. Many people – especially children – in England eat a bowl of cereal. In the winter many people eat “porridge” or boiled oats.

Children at school and adults at work generally have a ‘packed lunch’.Packed lunch typically consists of a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a piece of fruit and a drink.

The evening meal is usually called ‘dinner’ or ‘supper’. A typical British meal for dinner is meat and two different kinds of vegetables. One of the two vegetables is almost always potatoes. They generally put hot brown gravy on the meat. This traditional meal is rarely eaten nowadays. A recent survey found that most people in Britain eat curry, rice or pasta for dinner.

THE SUNDAY ROAST DINNER

Sunday lunch time is a typical time to eat the traditional Sunday Roast. Traditionally it consists of roast meat, two different kinds of vegetables and potatoes with a Yorkshire pudding. Yorkshire pudding is a food made from flour, eggs, and milk, baked and eaten with meat in Britain.

A ‘fit’ és a ‘suit’ igének nagyon hasonló a jelentése, ezért könnyű őket összekeverni. Tanuljuk is meg gyorsan, hogy mi a különbség a kettő között! 

A ‘fit’ ige azt jelenti, hogy egy ruhadarabnak/cipőnek jó a mérete (nem nagy/nem kicsi) annak a személynek, aki viseli. 

These trousers don’t fit me, I have to change them. They are too small for me.
Ez a nadrág nem jó nekem, ki kell cserélnem. Túl kicsi nekem.
This sweater suits you. You don’t have to change it. It’s the perfect size.
Ez a pulcsi jó neked. Nem kell kicserélned. Tökéletes a mérete. 

Ha az ember, aki éppen visel valamit (ruha/cipő) jól néz ki az adott ruhadarabban/cipőben (magyarul jól áll neki), akkor viszont a ‘suit’ igét használjuk (és nem a ‘fit’ igét, ami a méretre vonatkozik!). A ‘suit’ igét hajviseletekkel, ékszerekkel is lehet használni (bármivel, ami jól állhat valakinek). 

This hairstyle doesn’t suit you. You look older now.
Nem áll jól ez a hajviselet. Most öregebnek nézel ki.
These boots don’t suit me. They’re too elegant for me. I’m more sporty than elegant.
Ez a csizma nem áll jól nekem. Túl elegáns nekem. Én ennél sportosabb vagyok.

Az angol nyelv a magyarhoz képest egy kissé bonyolultan teszi fel a kérdéseket. Míg magyarul sokszor elég a hangsúllyal (írásban egy kérd?jellel) jelezni, hogy na ez itt most egy kérdés (és nem kijelentés vagy felkiáltás), addig az angol nyelvben a kérdésekhez nem csak hangsúlyt és írásjel jelzi a kérdést, hanem a szórend is. Ha angolul szeretnél egy kérdést feltenni, akkor kérd? szórendet kell használnod. Miel?tt belemélyednénk a kérd? szórend részletes taglalásába, ismerkedjünk meg néhány alapfogalommal.

Kétfajta kérdés típus létezik:

1. YES-NO QUESTIONS
Az yes-no (azaz az igen-nem) kérdésre a válasz meglep? módon ‘igen’ vagy ‘nem’. Az ilyen típusú kérdéseknél nincs kérdőszó, csak a kérdő szórendből derül ki, hogy ez itt egy kérdő mondat.

Pl:

Ahogy azt a példából is láthatod, magyarul az írásjel kivételével semmi különbség nincs a kérdő és a kijelentő mondat között, angolul pedig megváltozott a mondat szórendje: kijelentő szórendből kérdő szórend lett.

Létezik tagadó yes-no kérdés is:

Aren’t you hungry? – Nem vagy éhes?

Ebben az esetben is kérdő szórendet használunk (természetesen) és a segédigét tesszük (amivel kérdezünk) tagadó alakba. A kérdéseknek ezt a formáját (mármint a tagadó yes-no kérdéseket) akkor szoktuk használni, amikor a válaszadótól pozitív (azaz igenlő) választ várunk.

Először is tisztázzuk, hogy miért hívják így őket. ‘WH-question’ a nevük, mivelaz ilyen típusú kérdések tartalmaznak kérdőszót is, és angolul a kérdőszavak (1 kivételével) ezzel a két betűvel kezdődnek. Wow!

Tehát, az ilyen kérdésekben van kérdőszó, tehát igen-nem választ nem lehet ezekre adni. A WH-questions-re (magyarul kérdőszavas kérés) minimum egy szóval, de leginkább egy teljes mondattal kell válaszolni. (Kezdő nyelvtanulóknál örülünk az egy szónak is, hisz legalább értik a kérdést! 🙂 ) Na nézzünk egy-két példát!

WHO is this man? KI ez a férfi? WHAT is his name? MI a neve? WHERE is he from? HOVA valósi? WHY is he scared? MIÉRT fél? WHEN was he born? MIKOR született?

He’s a secret agent. Egy titkosügynök. His name is Fox. Fox-nak hívják. He’s from Canada. Kanadába valósi. I don’t know! Nem tudom! I have no idea! Ask him! Fogalmam sincs! Kérdezd meg tőle!
