A múlt idő kifejezésére szolgáló 6 igeidőn kívül (Past Simple, Past Continuous, Present Perfect Simple, Present Perfect Continuous, Past Perfect Simple, Past Perfect Continuous) a múlt idő egy-két speciális esetének leírására nem igeidőt, hanem két, egymáshoz nagyon hasonló kifejezést használnak. Ez a két kifejezés a used to és a would. 

Nézzük először a ’USED TO’ –t:

My brother used to smoke, but he quit a month ago. – A testvérem dohányzott, de egy hónapja abbahagyta.

The school building used to be a hospital. –Az iskola épülete régen egy kórház volt.

 Képzése a következőképpen alakul:

Kijelentés: ALANY + USED TO (minden számban és személyben) + IGE első alakja

Tagadás: ALANY + DIDN’T USE TO (minden számban és személyben) + IGE első alakja

Kérdés: DID+ ALANY + USE TO+ IGE első alakja

Láthatod, hogy tagadásban és kérdésben már csak use to van, mert pont úgy működik, mint a Past Simple kérdésben és tagadásban (mivel tulajdonképpen ez egy kifejezés, ami csak Past Simple-ben létezik), tehát a did segédige használatával. Ha meg a did segédigét használjuk, akkor magát az igét ugye már nem kell múlt időbe tenni, így a  used to-ból use to lesz.

Mikor használjuk a ’used to’-t?

Akkor használjuk, amikor olyan múltbeli szokásokról és állapotokról beszélünk, amelyek egy olyan múltbeli időszakhoz köthetőek, amelyek már befejeződtek (pl. gyerekkoromban – when I was a child, amikor iskolás voltam – when I was at school, stb. – ha ilyen jellegű időhatározó van a mondatban szinte tuti, hogy used to-t kell használni). 

Most pedig nézzük meg, hogy mi a különbség a Past Simple és a used to között?

Past Simple: múltban (konkrétan ismert, vagy legalább nagyjából behatárolható időpontban) történt esemény, vagy események egymásutánja
Used to: múltbeli szokások, állapotok (tehát nem egy konkrét esemény) leírása (a jelenbeli szokásos, rendszeres cselekvésekre ugye a Present Simple igeidőt használtuk, a múltban pedig tehát a “used to”-t kell) 

a) múltbeli szokás:

I used to go swimming three times a week when I was at university. – Egyetemista koromban hetente háromszor jártam úszni.  

b) múltbeli állapot:

I used to have long hair when I was a little girl.– Kislánykoromban hosszú hajam volt. 

WOULD használata múlt idő kifejezésére

A would-ot pedig múltbeli ismétlődő vagy rendszeres cselekvések, bizonyos múltbeli időszakhoz köthető jellemző tevékenységek leírására használjuk (időhatározók ugyanabba a kategóriába tartoznak, mint a used to-nál, de itt is igaz, hogy nem kötelező feltétlenül lennie időhatározónak a mondatban).

Múltban ismétlődő cselekvés:

I would go fishing every weekend with my grandfather when I was a child. Nowadays I go fishing alone. – Gyerekkoromban minden hétvégén horgászni jártam a nagyapámmal. Manapság egyedül járok horgászni.

Az every Sunday miatt (meg a when I was a child miatt) ez egy múltbeli időszakban zajlott rendszeresen ismétlődő cselekvés.                     

Múltbeli időszakhoz köthető jellemző tevékenységek:

My mother would always make me scrambled eggs for breakfast. – Anyukám mindig rántottát csinált nekem (rántottát szokott csinálni nekem – már nem!) reggelire.

Nagyi mindig forró csokit (szokott volt) nekem csinálni reggelire.

Nem túl könnyű meghúzni a határvonalat a used to és a would között, mert tényleg sokszor a beszélőnek a,  mondandóhoz való viszonya dönti el, hogy melyik a megfelelő. Összefoglalom még egyszer röviden a különbséget:

Used to VS. would

Tehát, végül is a used to-t és a would-ot is használhatod múltbeli ismétlődő cselekvésekre és eseményekre. Egyik sem egy konkrét cselekvésre, konkrét múltbeli időpontra vonatkozik, hanem egy egész múltbeli időszakra (pl. gyerekkoromban, régen, iskolás koromban, bezzeg az én időmben, stb. – ha ilyesmi időhatározó van a mondatban, akkor biztos, hogy used to vagy would szerkezet kell bele!) jellemző tevékenységre. Nagyon fontos viszont, hogy múltbéli – már nem létező – állapotok leírására csak a used to-t lehet használni! Ha biztosra akarsz menni, használd inkább mindig a “used to”-t, azzal me, foghatsz mellé! 

My grandfather used to walk/would walk five kilometers every morning.– Nagyapám valaha öt km-t gyalogolt naponta.

He used to be a baker. – Pék volt régen.
(Nem pedig He would be a baker, mert az, hogy pék volt nem egy cselekvés vagy esemény, hanem egy állapot!)

I used to have a dog called Pedro. – Volt egy Pedro nevű kutyám.
(… és nem I would have a dog called Pedro, mert ez is egy állapot, és nem egy esemény!)

Szóval a used to-s mondatokban mindig benne van az is, hogy amire vonatkozik, annak már rég vége. Ha azt mondod, hogy I used to …, akkor abban az is mindig benne van, hogy már nem érvényes az a dolog, amiről szó van!

A legegyszerűbb megjegyezni úgy, ha azt mondom, hogy azokat a múlt időben lévő mondatokat fordítom Present Perfect Simple-ben, amelyek magyarul ugyan múlt időben vannak, de nincs benne a mondatban (ha egy önálló mondatról van szó), vagy a szövegben múlt időre utaló időhatározó. Ezekben a mondatokban általában azért nincs egyébként múlt időre utaló időhatározó, mert nem az a lényeg, hogy a cselekvés vagy esemény mikor ment végbe, történt meg, hanem magának a bekövetkezésének a ténye.

Have you seen Romeo and Juliet? – Láttad már a Rómeó és Júliát?

Ennél a mondatnál arra vagyunk kíváncsiak, hogy egyáltalán valaha az életben látta-e a Rómeó és Júliát. Nézzük a mondatot Past Simple igeidőben is meg:

Did you see Romeo and Juliet? – Láttad a Rómeó és Júliát?

Ebben az esetben a beszélő és a hallgató is tudja, hogy melyik előadásról van szó (például,ami előző nap ment a tévében), így már nem Present Perfect igeidőt használ, hanem Past Simple-t, azaz egyszerű múltat. Ha lenne időhatározó is a mondatban, vagy arra kérdezne rá az illető, hogy mikor következett be a cselekvés, akkor is Past Simple igeidőt kellene használni. Így:

When did you see Romeo and Juliet? – Mikor láttad a Rómeó és Júliát?

I saw Romeo and Juliet yesterday on TV. – Tegnap láttam a Rómeó és Júliát a tévében.

Olyan már bekövetkezett, és lezárult múltbeli cselekvések leírására is használják a Present Perfect Simple-t, amelyeknek a jelenben következményei vannak. A mondatok magyarul itt is múlt időben lesznek, mert itt sem az a lényeg, hogy mikor történt a dolog, hanem az, hogy megtörtént, és ennek a jelenben milyen következményei vannak. Onnan tudjuk felismerni (az esetek többségében), hogy a mondatot megfogalmazhatnánk Present Simple-ben is:

She’s broken her leg. She can’t dance now. – Eltörte a lábát. Most nem tud táncolni.

She has been to Catania. She knows where the fish market is. – Már volt Cataniában. Tudja, hol van a halpiac.

Present Perfect Simple a leggyakrabban használt igeidő a közelmúltban lezajlott eseményekről szóló híradásokban. Amennyiben elhangzik az is, hogy az esemény mikor történt, természetesen Past Simple-t kell használnunk.

There has been an explosion near Budapest in a fireworks factory. – Robbantás volt egy petárdagyárban Budapest mellett. 

There was an explosion near Budapest in a fireworks factory yesterday. – Tegnap robbanás volt egy petárdagyárban Budapest mellett. 

Magának a hírnek a közlése után (ami Present Perfect Simple-ben van) az eset részleteinek közlése már Past Simple-ben szokott történni.

A Present Perfect Simple igeidő jellemző időhatározói a következők: just (éppen most), already (már), yet (még – tagadó mondatban, már – kérdő mondatban), ever (valaha), never (soha), recently (az utóbbi időben/a közelmúltban/ mostanában), lately (az utóbbi időben/a közelmúltban/ mostanában), so far (idáig), in the last few minutes (az utóbbi néhány percben), in the last few years (az utóbbi néhány évben), in the last two weeks (az utóbbi két hétben), etc.

Ezek az eddig említett időhatározók mind olyan időszakra vonatkoznak, amely valamikor a múltban elkezdődött (lényegtelen, hogy mikor) és egészen mostanáig tartott. Itt kell megemlítenünk még két másik időhatározót is, de azok inkább a Present Perfect Continuous-ra lesznek jellemzők (de ott egy picit máshogy lesz a jelentésük majd).

since –… óta (egy adott múltbéli időpont óta)

I haven’t eaten anything since breakfast. – Nem ettem semmit reggeli óta. 

She has written a lot since Friday. – Sokat írt péntek óta. 

for – … óta (valamennyi ideje)

We have been here for a week. – Egy hete vagyunk itt. 

They haven’t gone fishing for years. – Nem mentek horgászni már évek óta. 

Tehát valami megtörtént (vagy nem történt meg) valamennyi ideje, vagy valami múltbéli időpont óta. Ide tartoznak még azok az időhatározók is, amelyek még le nem zárult időszakokra vonatkoznak. Ezek az időhatározók tulajdonképpen ugyanazok, mint amiket a Present Continuous-ban használtunk éppen folyamatban lévő időszak kifejezésére, csak ott „abból az irányból” néztük őket, hogy folyamatban lévő időszakot jelölnek, most pedig úgy fogunk rájuk tekinteni, mint még folyamatban lévő, le nem zárult időszakra vonatkozó időhatározó szavak: today, this afternoon, this week, this month, this year, stb.

Have you been on holiday this year? – Voltál már nyaralni ebben az évben? (még tart az év, ha nem volt, még lehet) 

Have you seen Tom this morning? – Láttad Tomot ma reggel? (még reggel van, ha nem látta Tomot, még láthatja) 

Tipikus Present Perfect Simple mondattípus az, amikor valahányadszorra csinálunk valamit. Itt is egy le nem zárt időszakról van szó (hiszen még élünk), és az a cselekvés, amit éppen valahányadszorra csinálunk most, később újra bekövetkezhet.

This is the first time I have won anything! – Először nyertem valamit (életeben)! 

This is the third time I have been to Egypt. –  Harmadszorra vagyok Egyiptomban. 

Big Ben will bong to welcome in 2022, the Houses of Parliament has confirmed.

The bell will be struck 12 times as it hits midnight on New Year’s Eve, despite other celebrations in the capital being cancelled.

It will be the first time in nearly four years that the clock face of Elizabeth Tower will be on show for the event, following years of restoration.

And it will be the last time a temporary mechanism will be used to sound the bell.

Restoration of the tower and its famous clock began in 2017, meaning the exterior was covered in scaffolding and the bell itself was silenced.

However, it gave Parliament the opportunity to carry out its biggest repair and conservation project in the building’s 160-year history.

The clock was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and installed by Edward John Dent in 1859.

Its mechanism, which weighs eleven-and-a-half tonnes, was removed and taken to clock specialists the Cumbria Clock Company in the Lake District, where more than 1,000 separate parts were cleaned and repaired.

The pieces have now been returned to Westminster and are being reinstalled over the coming months.

But the clock face – restored to its original colours – is now on show, and from spring next year, Big Ben and the four quarter bells will once again play the “Westminster Quarters” melody and bong on the hour throughout the day.

One of Parliament’s team of clock mechanics, Ian Westworth, said: “It’s iconic – it’s probably the world’s most famous clock, and to have had our hands on every single nut and bolt is a huge privilege.

“It’s going to be quite emotional when it’s all over – there will be sadness that the project has finished, but happiness that we have got it back and everything’s up and running again.”

On 3 November, 1825, Count István Széchenyi donated the full annual income of his estates that year to establish the Learned Society, or the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, as it was renamed after 1845. These inventions left their mark on the technologies we use today.

Today, we celebrate the most creative and ground-breaking Hungarian inventions and achievements.

The introduction of World Science Day was initiated by the Hungarian members during the first UNESCO World Conference on Science which was held in 1999 in Budapest. This was the first time when the world’s governments and the international scientific community gathered together to prepare a new “social contract” between science and society at large.

World Science Day for Peace and Development was proclaimed by UNESCO on 3 November, 2001. It was first celebrated worldwide on 10 November, 2002.

In the last two centuries, a remarkably large number of Hungarian scientists have contributed to the development of various branches of natural science. This is also reflected by the impressive number of Nobel Laureates of Hungarian origin.

Fülöp Lénárd (Philipp E. A. von Lenard) was the first Hungarian-born Nobel Prize Winner. He conducted experiments on cathode rays and their properties. His results led to the discovery of electrons and X-rays. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1905 for his work on cathode rays.

Dénes Gábor (Dennis Gabor) developed the early principles of holographic theory while working on improvements to the resolution of the electron microscope. His method of producing a three-dimensional image was based on interference (interaction between light waves) and coherence (light waves aligned in phase with one another).

Nowadays, handwashing plays a significant and evident part in our personal hygiene. However, it only became part of our daily routine 150 years ago, thanks to the ground-breaking discovery of the Hungarian physician, Ignác Semmelweis. Semmelweis observed maternal mortality rates and noticed that the rate of puerperal fever was higher in the cases when doctors and medical students examined patients in the maternity ward directly after performing an autopsy. In 1847, he introduced mandatory handwashing among doctors, nurses, and medical students at the Vienna General Hospital in order to prevent further cases of infection. By introducing this new regulation, Semmelweis managed to reduce the rate of fatal puerperal fever from approximately 10% to 0.85%.

In 1937, the “Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH“ (Company for the Preparation of the German Volkswagen Ltd.) was established, and thus “People’s Car” was born. But did you know that the intellectual father of Volkswagen was actually an Austro-Hungarian engineer? Béla Barényi enrolled as an engineering student at the Viennese Technical College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 1924. TV chef Mary Berry has said she is “proud and honoured” to be made a Dame Commander for services to cooking, writing and baking.

Dame Mary was honoured on Wednesday by the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

As well as her 50-year culinary and broadcasting career, the honour also recognises her charity work.

The 86-year-old former Bake Off judge recently had surgery after breaking her hip following a fall in the summer.

Yet she was able to attend the ceremony alongside husband Paul Hunnings, a retired antiquarian bookseller.

Speaking after her latest royal engagement, she said: “I’m extremely proud and honoured. I just wish my parents were here – they’re looking down and my children are quite excited.

“My aim is to pass on the skill that I love so much, because everybody has to cook each day. Whether it’s a student or whatever it is, you’ve got to feed yourself so why not learn to do it well and enjoy it.”

After studying cooking in France and the UK, Dame Mary worked for a number of food industry bodies and wrote recipe pages of Housewife magazine.

Her first cookbook, The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook, was published in 1970 and she has gone on to write more than 50 others, selling millions of copies around the world.

She became a household name to a new generation of cake lovers thanks to her role as a judge on The Great British Bake Off, alongside Paul Hollywood, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.

In her latest upcoming BBC series, the veteran broadcaster will come to the rescue of novice cooks hoping to impress a loved one.

Aside from cooking, Dame Mary has committed herself to charity work down the years. Her youngest son William was killed in a car crash at the age of 19, after which she became a patron of Child Bereavement UK.

“Whether it’s the siblings who are left or the husband or the wife, it’s a hand to hold and to realise other people are in the same boat.”- she said.
