Big Ben will bong to welcome in 2022, the Houses of Parliament has confirmed.

The bell will be struck 12 times as it hits midnight on New Year’s Eve, despite other celebrations in the capital being cancelled.

It will be the first time in nearly four years that the clock face of Elizabeth Tower will be on show for the event, following years of restoration.

And it will be the last time a temporary mechanism will be used to sound the bell.

Restoration of the tower and its famous clock began in 2017, meaning the exterior was covered in scaffolding and the bell itself was silenced.

However, it gave Parliament the opportunity to carry out its biggest repair and conservation project in the building’s 160-year history.

The clock was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and installed by Edward John Dent in 1859.

Its mechanism, which weighs eleven-and-a-half tonnes, was removed and taken to clock specialists the Cumbria Clock Company in the Lake District, where more than 1,000 separate parts were cleaned and repaired.

The pieces have now been returned to Westminster and are being reinstalled over the coming months.

But the clock face – restored to its original colours – is now on show, and from spring next year, Big Ben and the four quarter bells will once again play the “Westminster Quarters” melody and bong on the hour throughout the day.

One of Parliament’s team of clock mechanics, Ian Westworth, said: “It’s iconic – it’s probably the world’s most famous clock, and to have had our hands on every single nut and bolt is a huge privilege.

“It’s going to be quite emotional when it’s all over – there will be sadness that the project has finished, but happiness that we have got it back and everything’s up and running again.”

On 3 November, 1825, Count István Széchenyi donated the full annual income of his estates that year to establish the Learned Society, or the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, as it was renamed after 1845. The introduction of World Science Day was initiated by the Hungarian members during the first UNESCO World Conference on Science which was held in 1999 in Budapest. This was the first time when the world’s governments and the international scientific community gathered together to prepare a new “social contract” between science and society at large.

World Science Day for Peace and Development was proclaimed by UNESCO on 3 November, 2001. It was first celebrated worldwide on 10 November, 2002.

In the last two centuries, a remarkably large number of Hungarian scientists have contributed to the development of various branches of natural science. This is also reflected by the impressive number of Nobel Laureates of Hungarian origin.

Fülöp Lénárd (Philipp E. A. von Lenard) was the first Hungarian-born Nobel Prize Winner. He conducted experiments on cathode rays and their properties. His results led to the discovery of electrons and X-rays. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1905 for his work on cathode rays.

Nowadays, handwashing plays a significant and evident part in our personal hygiene. However, it only became part of our daily routine 150 years ago, thanks to the ground-breaking discovery of the Hungarian physician, Ignác Semmelweis. Semmelweis observed maternal mortality rates and noticed that the rate of puerperal fever was higher in the cases when doctors and medical students examined patients in the maternity ward directly after performing an autopsy. In 1847, he introduced mandatory handwashing among doctors, nurses, and medical students at the Vienna General Hospital in order to prevent further cases of infection. By introducing this new regulation, Semmelweis managed to reduce the rate of fatal puerperal fever from approximately 10% to 0.85%.

In 1937, the “Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH“ (Company for the Preparation of the German Volkswagen Ltd.) was established, and thus “People’s Car” was born. But did you know that the intellectual father of Volkswagen was actually an Austro-Hungarian engineer? Béla Barényi enrolled as an engineering student at the Viennese Technical College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 1924. He already conceived the concept of the future “People’s Car” during his university years, and his sketches are considered the original design of the Volkswagen Beetle.

Zoltán Bay was a Hungarian physicist who worked for the United Incandescent Lamps and Electric Company (Tungsram), and as the head of the laboratory, he contributed to the development of high-intensity gas discharge lamps, fluorescent lamps, radio tubes, radio receiver circuitry, and decimeter radio wave techniques. TV chef Mary Berry has said she is “proud and honoured” to be made a Dame Commander for services to cooking, writing and baking.

Dame Mary was honoured on Wednesday by the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

As well as her 50-year culinary and broadcasting career, the honour also recognises her charity work.

The 86-year-old former Bake Off judge recently had surgery after breaking her hip following a fall in the summer.

Yet she was able to attend the ceremony alongside husband Paul Hunnings, a retired antiquarian bookseller.

Speaking after her latest royal engagement, she said: “I’m extremely proud and honoured. I just wish my parents were here – they’re looking down and my children are quite excited.

“My aim is to pass on the skill that I love so much, because everybody has to cook each day. Whether it’s a student or whatever it is, you’ve got to feed yourself so why not learn to do it well and enjoy it.”

After studying cooking in France and the UK, Dame Mary worked for a number of food industry bodies and wrote recipe pages of Housewife magazine.

Her first cookbook, The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook, was published in 1970 and she has gone on to write more than 50 others, selling millions of copies around the world.

She became a household name to a new generation of cake lovers thanks to her role as a judge on The Great British Bake Off, alongside Paul Hollywood, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.

In her latest upcoming BBC series, the veteran broadcaster will come to the rescue of novice cooks hoping to impress a loved one.

Aside from cooking, Dame Mary has committed herself to charity work down the years. Her youngest son William was killed in a car crash at the age of 19, after which she became a patron of Child Bereavement UK.

“Whether it’s the siblings who are left or the husband or the wife, it’s a hand to hold and to realise other people are in the same boat.”- she said.

We have previously reported about the development of the brand-new IC+ railway coaches in Hungary. Still, from October 11th, these new Hungarian railway first class and premium class coaches will be in use already.

Closing a three-weekend display roadshow for families, the brand-new Hungarian designed railway coaches, which provide services on first-class and premium class, will be in use from Monday. If you wish to travel on these coaches, you will be able to do so if you purchase a regular first- or second-class ticket to the DÁLIA and VÉRCSE ring intercity route between the 11th and 24th of October, Máv group said.

The IC+ coaches will travel from Budapest’s Keleti railway station to Miskolc – Nyíregyháza – Debrecen – Szolnok to Budapest’s Nyugati railway station and back. The DÁLIA IC train will start at 7:30 in the morning from Keleti railway station and begin its journey back the same way from the Nyugati railway station as VÉRCSE IC.

If you buy regular first- or second-class tickets for this, approximately 7-hour ride, you can try out the brand-new IC+ coaches designed in Hungary.

Celebrating the new IC+ coaches entering into service at MÁV, they await passengers in the Keleti railway station’s business waiting room with updated menu offers including sandwiches, sweet and savoury baked goods and fresh fruits, not to mention seasonal flavoured coffees and cocktails.

After the 25th of October, the number of such coaches will double and be available on additional lines so that you can see these coaches 6-7 times a day. But from that on, you will be charged the full fare.

But why are these IC+ coaches special, you might ask? Well, they provide a new first-class and premium class service, which is unique in Hungary. In addition to having a bistro area, these coaches are also equipped with a quiet area for passengers who would like to relax during their travels.

The premium class areas have much more leg space, and the seats are farther away from each other. This way, only four seats are placed into a single booth, rather than the usual six.

Each individual seat is made out of leather, and each seat has two armrests. Additionally, there is an adjustable footrest and further adjustability on the seats using controls on the armrest.

The bistro area also offers tea or coffee for anyone who pays the total price of the fare.

Currently, 55 IC+ cars are roaming the country with these brand-new first- and premium class coaches, but many provide ordinary first- and second-class services, Origo says.

Furthermore, 35 IC+ premium coaches with bistro areas are on the way and are currently being manufactured in Szolnok. They are expected to be ready at the end of Q2, 2022.

Hungary has been famous for its many traditional festivals, but the Csabai Sausage Festival occupies a special place among them for sure. Organised first in 1997, this festival became one of the biggest ones in Hungary. It welcomes tens of thousands of visitors not only from Hungary but also from all around the world. They come to taste the delicacies, but some foreigners even try to win the awards and make their own sausage specialities during the contest.

According to bigseventravel.com, fall “might spell the end of long sunny days but it also signals the start of the harvest, the most delicious time of year. Mountains of truffles, wine, nuts, chocolate and vegetables, combined with baggier and thicker clothing, makes it the perfect time of year to tuck into the tastiest things you can find.” Therefore, they recommend everybody to “stop mourning the end of summer and start planning your foodie getaway.”

To help that, the global travel site revealed The 25 Best Autumn Food Festivals In Europe. With many countries in Europe now open and eager for visitors, these food festivals will inspire future trips and hopefully boost these local economies. Among them, the Csabai Sausage Festival won the silver medal.

According to the travel site, they have been checking out suggestions from their audience as well as contributions from their editorial team. They also followed certain criteria for the ranking, from must-try dishes, original and postponed festival dates and attendance numbers. They have narrowed it down to really find the best Europe has to offer.

On the southwest coast of Sicily, not far from Mazara del Vallo, lies the largest archaeological site in Europe. Selinunte has lain abandoned for nearly 2,500 years.

From being one of the most progressive and eminent cities in Magna Graecia, in 409BC Selinunte was transformed, almost overnight, into a large expanse of rubble. The reason for this was an attack from the old enemy, the Carthaginians, who, for many years, had seen this upstart town as a threat to their influence in Sicily. Taking advantage of some trouble between the Greeks of Selinunte and the Elymians of Segesta, the Carthaginians sent some 100,000 men to lay siege to the town, which was only able to hold out for nine days. The subsequent sacking involved the massacre of some 16,000 of the town’s inhabitants while most of the remaining citizens were taken into slavery.

Selinunte is beautifully located, sitting on a high plain and overlooking the sea. It is flanked on either side by golden beaches and, being almost 1km wide, is an excellent excuse for a good walk, though it is also possible to get around on electric buggies.

There are two entrances to the archaeological site, one from Marinella di Selinunte to the east and one from Triscina to the west.

Vintage tram marks March 15th and closing of Chain Bridge while cyclists reclaim the Pest quayside

This, Saturday, 13 March, the Pest embankment will be opening up for cyclists between Margaret Bridge and Közraktár utca, where renovation is due to take place. The quay is being given over to two-wheeled traffic every weekend until then. Also this holiday weekend, 13-15 March, the Chain Bridge will be blocked off to cars before being closed down completely on Wednesday, 17 March, for long-term renovation. An exhibition and vintage tram ride are marking this historic farewell, and the annual 15 March celebrations.

With a poster exhibition and vintage tram ride, Budapest is preparing for the closing of Chain Bridge for renovation, and the anniversary of the 1848 Revolution, always celebrated on 15 March.

From 13 to 15 March, an exhibition, The Eternal Chain Bridge, will be on display at the Pest and Buda bridgeheads, Clark Ádám tér and Széchenyi István tér, 18 billboards presenting a timeline through history. After the holiday weekend, the show will move to Városháza park in town, to be viewed there until Easter.

From Saturday to Monday, the panoramic tram 2 will be served by vintage carriages running every hour along the whole route between Jászai Mari tér and Közvágóhíd. Standard tickets or passes are valid. The public is being asked to observe all rules of mask-wearing and social distancing.

The tram sets off from Közvágóhíd at 10am, 11am, noon and hourly from 1.40pm to 4.40pm. From Jászai Mari tér, it’s 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm then hourly from 2.12pm to 5.12pm. Journey time is around 20 minutes.
