Thanksgiving is probably the second biggest holiday in the United States after Christmas. It is time to give thanks, especially for the abundance of food after the harvest and is marked by a great feast. The turkey – thought to be first domesticated by Mesoamericans long before being introduced into Europe by the Spanish, and much later proposed as the symbol of the United States by Benjamin Franklin, instead of the bald eagle – has become the traditional main course of this event. It is often filled with stuffing and served with mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, various vegetable dishes, and pumpkin pie for dessert.

Thanksgiving traditionally dates back to 1621, in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. This was the landing place of Mayflower, a ship full of Pilgrims, seeking freedom from religious persecution back in England. They managed to survive a very difficult first year only with the help of the natives, and so they gave thanks and celebrated together after the first harvest with a three-day feast.

Thanksgiving weekend sees also some of the heaviest traffic of the year as millions of Americans return home to be with their families. Houses are decorated with earthy fall tones and cornucopias or horns of plenty.

The food market is always a colourful sight but it is especially so at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The stalls are full of home-grown fruit and vegetables in every colour of the rainbow. A market is a friendly place where people like to talk to each other. Vendors are proud of their merchandise and they are happy when customers praise the selection of goods they have on offer. Goods at the market are usually nice and fresh and most of them come from your home country. Farmers grow them on their own farm or they have been grown in a local garden. Consuming food that hasn’t been transported from faraway lands is beneficial for the environment and your health as well. If you do the shopping at the market you support small-scale producers so that they can sell their produce and can have an income.

At the market, you can buy mostly fruits and vegetables, but other foodstuffs are also available such as dairy products, meat, fish, pickles, jams, seasons, herbs, honey and of course flowers. The vendors behind the stalls are eager to talk to you and they take their time to answer your questions. They give you advice on what’s worth buying and what kind of ingredients are the juiciest and freshest at present. They can even give you some ideas or recipes when you are at a loss about what to cook. When you go to the market take a basket with you; that’s the most convenient way of taking your purchase home. Don’t forget that markets are places where credit or debit cards are usually not accepted so make sure that you have enough cash on hand. Prices are not always set at the market, so sometimes you can bargain with the sellers. They may let you taste their merchandise before you buy it so that they prove to you that it’s really delicious and fresh. Even if bargaining is not a custom at the market that you frequent you can surely find good bargains if you don’t buy what you want at the first stall that comes your way. Fish for lower prices and do your shopping at whoever offers you the best price. Quality is of importance though, so the price is not the only consideration at the market.

If you are a regular at the market and vendors know you they may give you a good price or even lower the price for you because of the long-lasting relationship with each other. You can pre-order goods from them if they know that you’ll be there next week too, they will bring that chicken or whatever you need in the best quality.

All in all, the market is a great place and gives you a better shopping experience than hyper- or supermarkets where there might be a bigger selection of goods but you can’t expect any personal relationship or touch. They’re there to serve you with goods only but if you want to have more than that markets are the place for you.

beszédkészség-kommunikatív érték: Ahogy a neve is mutatja, azt méri, hogy mennyire tud gördülékenyen kommunikálni az adott nyelven a vizsgázó. Itt NEM azt nézik, hogy mennyire hibás, és mennyire gazdag a szókincs, hanem azt, hogy mennyire megy folyamatosan az interakció a vizsgáztatóval, mennyire reagál gyorsan a kérdésekre a vizsgázó.)

szókincs: Azt méri, hogy az adott szinten elvárt szókincset mennyire használja a hallgató, esetlegesen vannak egy olyan helyzetek, amikor az adott szituációhoz kapcsolódóan nem tud bizonyos alapvető kifejezéseket.
nyelvhelyesség: Azt méri, hogy mennyire beszél nyelvtanilag helyesen a vizsgázó.

Láthatod, hogy a nyelvhelyesség pontozása adja az összpontszám legkisebb részét, tehát a legfontosabb az, hogy megértsd amit mondanak neked, tudj rá gyorsan reagálni (folyamatos legyen a kommunikáció), és a szókincsed is megfelelő legyen az adott szint elvárásaihoz.

Alapszabályok

Alapfokon leginkább azt várják el, hogy azt mondjuk el, hogy mit látunk a képen konkrétan, tehát ki mit csinál, hol készült a kép, kin milyen ruha van, és hogyan néz ki. Középfokon emellett elvárják, hogy egy kicsit el is tudjon vonatkoztatni a képtől a vizsgázó, és fejtse ki véleményén a látottakkal kapcsolatban, vagy meséljen el valami személyes élményt, ami a képről eszébe jut. Felsőfokon általában olyan képek közül kell választani, amelyek eleve egy elvontabb témáról szólnak, vagy egy mélyebb beszélgetésbe vonják bele a vizsgázót.

Alapfok B1

In the picture, we can see a group of young people watching a football match on TV. We can see only their backs. They seem to be happy and they are cheering for the teams. They are holding glasses and bottles in their hands. I don’t know what they are drinking. People usually like drinking beer when they watch a football match. The footballers on the screen are wearing blue and red jerseys but I can’t tell which two teams are playing. Football is a ball game in which eleven players play against eleven players from the other team. The aim is to kick or head the ball into the goal. In the goal, there stands a goalkeeper who shouldn’t let the ball into the goal. I think it’s a hard task.

When I was a child I played fooball almost every day. I went to training regularly and we had matches at the weekend. There were a few boys in the neighbourhood who liked playing football as much as I did. After school when I was ready with my homework we went together to the football pitch nearby and played until it was dark and we had to go home. Nowadays, unfortunately, I don’t have time to do any sports.
