Cat survives 52 days without food

The new owners of a house in the Netherlands had a shock this weekend when a very skinny cat appeared and ran out as they opened the front door of their home for the first time. Venice is one of the most important cities not just in Italy but in the whole world although it is not a big city. The population keeps on shrinking at a fast rate and is now around 55,000 locals in the historic city itself.

Venice is built on 118 small islands that are separated by 150 canals. Every year the city sinks a few millimetres because the ground is made from mud. Because of this, the Italian government is building a system of mobile gates against sea-water flooding that will safely protect Venice.

There are several ways to get around in Venice. The most common is walking and using the Vaporetto, a water bus which carries lots of people around the city. The Vaporetto goes around the City and on the Grand Canal, it does not enter the small canals of the city. To see Venice from the small canals, most tourists use the gondola.

Venice has fantastic crafts, culture, and traditions. Shopping for handmade goods such as masks and glass jewels is a must for visitors. These days, however, mass tourism led Venice to be invaded by many shops selling low-quality souvenirs.

Venice has its own regional language. Although Venetian is considered by many to be just a northern dialect of Italian, it is in fact a completely separate language, not even in the same group as Italian, and more similar to Catalan and Spanish than to Italian.

There is a growing interest in this language these days. Not only intellectuals but also politicians and even companies show interest in it. Companies in Venice publish advertisements in Venetian. Some works of literature, The Little Prince, among them, have been translated into Venetian.

People all over the world live in cities with skyscrapers, which are tall buildings that ……G…. (0). The first skyscraper was built in 1885, and it was 10 stories high. As of today, the tallest buildings in the world can be more than 100 stories high.

Adam Attew, a 32-year-old retail assistant from East London, has amassed over 100 Christmas jumpers over the last decade.

Wearing them seems to brighten the moods of others around him – so he can’t wait to start donning them again come December 1, at which point he’ll wear a different one daily.

‘It started over 10 years ago when I needed a jumper for a Christmas market where I was selling baked goods,’ he tells Metro.co.uk.

‘Christmas jumpers were just starting to be a thing then. I had never even thought about them before. I wanted to be as Christmassy as the setting of the market. 

‘So, I bought one and wondered if there were more out there. Then I was shopping in the Christmas sales and spotted a few in the sale for £3, some for even £1, and got about five or so.

‘Every sale period I continued looking online for new ones until I had 25 or so.’

He buys the knits from high street stores such as Primark through to second-hand car boot sales and charity shops.

On Facebook in 2016, he created his own advent calendar by posting a picture each day wearing one of the 25 jumpers in the lead up to the big day.

‘I guess I wanted to continue with it and before I knew it, several years later, I had over 100… oops,’ he said.

‘I think getting them for less spurred me on big time as I have always been a savvy shopper – getting a £16 jumper for £3 was a buzz and a lot of my jumpers were bought like that.

‘Most I have paid under £5 for with some special ones ranging between £12-16 each, online.’

The most he’s spent on a jumper is £20 – it’s Willy Wonka themed.

Compliments from others spurs him on, as Adam says the attention makes him ‘feel great’.

‘Not everyone knows the scale of my jumpers collection, and those that do love seeing the new ones,’ the retail assistant tells us.

‘At my workplace I wear one and often am the only one, so people sometimes think I’m the manager as everyone else is plain clothed.’

At Christmas time, Adam’s boss allows staff to dress in festive attire as he is also a big Christmas fan. Usually, only Adam takes up the opportunity.

‘When I am out at events again, I’m the only one usually in festive attire, which makes me stand out straight away,’ he explains.

‘I like the compliments and enjoyment people get from them, bringing some festive cheer to the day.

Ukrainian airline allows female cabin crew to wear trousers and trainers

A Ukrainian budget airline is allowing female cabin crew to swap their skirts and heels for comfy trouser suits and smart white trainers.

SkyUp, one of the country’s biggest low-cost airlines, announced that the new-look comfort option would be offered to female inflight staff from next month.

“Many of my colleagues are permanent clients of podiatrists; their toes and toe nails are constantly damaged by high heels,” SkyUp staff member Daria Solomennaya told the BBC.

“Twelve hours on your feet, flying from Kyiv to Zanzibar and back. If you wear high heels, you are hardly able to walk afterwards,” she added.

SkyUp is not the only airline to offer a more modern, comfy uniform for the female crew – in April 2020, Japan Airlines introduced a trousers option for women working onboard, as well as a range of footwear options including flat shoes.

Queen Elizabeth II wrote a letter to the pensioner residents of a retirement house in Hungary. According to hellovidek.hu, the residents of the retirement house were surprised to receive a letter from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Never before has such an important letter arrived at Dóc, a small village of Southern Hungary, 162 km far from Budapest.

The residents received a royal greeting from Queen Elizabeth written in the summer residence of the British Royal Family. According to delmagyar.hu, the Ápolás Extra Egyesület (Extra Care Association) is operating a family-style residential home in Dóc. Nursing director Lili Bajusz and Norbert Rostás, chairman of the association, have been working in England in nursing homes. They created their own retirement home based on that experience, following the patterns they saw in England.

Apart from individual care, they organise many programs, but their opportunities narrowed during the coronavirus epidemic. As a result, for example, they were watching movies together. They watched The Crown, a series about the life of Elizabeth II.

Many of the residents fancied the beautifully decorated, handwritten letters showed in the series. That resulted in the idea that they would send a letter to the Queen. They sent it in early summer when they celebrated her becoming the longest-sitting monarch on the British throne and grieved for the loss of Prince Philip. Therefore, they not only greeted Elizabeth II, but offered their condolences, too.

The Queen received hundreds of letters every day. However, she only reads the ones that are handwritten and, in some way, unique. Therefore, they chose a special, pinkish, glittering paper. They attached a photo montage of the residents, too.

The reply came from the Balmoral Castle signed by Elizabeth Leeming, the first secretary of the Queen. She conveyed Her Majesty’s thanks for the letter and the photo. Mr Rostás said they had sent their letter addressed to Buckingham Palace in June because then the Queen was there. However, it seems that it was worth sending it after her when she moved to her summer residence.

What Do People Do?

There are a number of customs associated with Whit Monday. Cheese rolling and throwing competitions are held in some parts of England. In other parts of the country, Whit walks, which are parades led by local brass bands, clergy, dignitaries and local organizations, are held. The walks are often concluded by various activities that include competitions, dancing and food.

In the United States some churches organize Whit Monday prayer rallies, which include prayers and street marches. In France it is a holiday that is respected by many citizens. Background

Christian Pentecost commemorates the Holy Spirit’s visit to the apostles who received the “gift of tongues” on the 50th day after Easter.  It also marks the birth of the Christian Church. Although it is not certain when Pentecost was first observed by Christians, it may have been early as the first century. Pentecost occurs roughly seven weeks after Easter Sunday, or 50 days after Easter, including Easter Day. The Easter date depends on the ecclesiastical approximation of the March equinox. Whit Monday used to be one of the major annual holidays in Pennsylvania Dutch country in the United States.
