Ferdinand Magellan was a brave explorer who lived a long time ago. He is famous because he was the first person to lead a trip around the world. Magellan was born in Portugal in 1480. When he grew up, he worked for the king as a sailor.

One day, Magellan had a big idea. He wanted to find a new way to the Spice Islands, which are in Asia. At that time, spices were very valuable. Many people wanted them. But getting to the Spice Islands was hard and dangerous.

Magellan thought there might be a better route to get there. In 1519, Magellan started his journey. He had five ships and many men. They sailed from Spain and went across the Atlantic Ocean. After some time, they reached South America. Magellan led his crew down the coast, looking for a way to the other ocean.

After many months, they found a passage, now known as the Strait of Magellan. This passage took them to the Pacific Ocean. The journey across the Pacific Ocean was very difficult. The ocean was very big, and they did not see land for many weeks. Many of Magellan’s men became sick because there wasn’t enough fresh food and water.

Finally, they reached the Philippines. Unfortunately, Magellan was killed in a battle there. Even though Magellan died, his journey went on. One of his ships, the Victoria, continued. It sailed all the way back to Spain in 1522.

Only 18 men returned, but they had done something amazing. They proved the Earth was round by sailing all the way around it. Magellan’s adventure was important because it changed how people viewed the world. It showed that different places were connected and that the world was a big but reachable place.

December fun facts 

December is the twelfth and last month of the year on our calendar. The name of this month comes from the Latin word decem for “ten”, it was the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar before January and February were added. December always begins on the same day of the week as September and ends on the same day of the week as April. December’s flower is the narcissus, which produces flowers in this month. Its birthstone is turquoise. The meaning of turquoise is prosperity.

In mainly Christian countries, December is dominated by Christmas, which is celebrated on December 25 in most of those countries, though for example in Russia they celebrate it on January 7.

At the beginning of December, the season of Advent starts. The word Advent means ‘coming’ because it’s a time of preparation for the coming holiday of Christmas.

In the past, people believed in some strange things in connection with Christmas. For example, they believed that a child born on Christmas Day will have a special fortune but wearing new shoes on Christmas Day will bring bad luck. And they said if you take a candle to church at Christmas don’t bring it home, but leave it there for good luck.

The story of traffic lights

Have you ever wondered why traffic lights are red, yellow and green? They didn’t always have these colours. Actually, the first lights weren’t for cars – they were for trains. When they started to use railway signs in 1830, green meant stop and white meant go. But there were all sorts of problems with the clear, white light. When conductors saw a clear white light from far away, they didn’t know if it was a go light for the train or simply just a light from a house or a street lamp. Another problem was that the green glass sometimes broke and fell out of a stop light and then it looked clear white. The train driver could just think that the broken green light was a go instead of a stop. So the engineers decided to pick new colours.

It was easy to pick red for stop. Red is the colour of blood and makes people naturally think of danger and they stop if they see red. “Go” was changed for green because the colour green doesn’t have much effect on our feelings and emotions. When we see green, our brain tells us we don’t have to be afraid and there is no reason to stop or to slow down. Yellow became “wait” mainly because yellow is the colour that seems the brightest when they put it between red and green. This system worked much better for trains, so finally it was copied for cars.
