Mark: Perfect. The last thing we need is to lose something important in all this mess.
Anne: By the way, are we still asking James and Sophie to help us tomorrow?
Mark: Yes, they’re coming around 10 a.m. They offered to help carry the heavy stuff. We’re lucky to have friends like them.
Anne: Totally. Okay, let’s try to finish the packing tonight so we can get at least a few hours of sleep. Tomorrow’s going to be a long day.

Hungary will hold its next parliamentary election on 12 April 2026, using the same mixed electoral system introduced in 2012. Although the political landscape has changed dramatically since then, the structure of the voting system remains the same, combining single‑member constituencies with party‑list proportional representation.

Who Can Vote?

Every Hungarian citizen aged 18 or over has the right to vote in parliamentary elections. There are two main categories of voters:

• Residents in Hungary: They receive two votes.
• Hungarian citizens living abroad without a permanent Hungarian address: They receive one vote (for the party list only).

Minority voters may choose to vote for a national minority list instead of a party list.

How Many Seats Are There in Parliament?

Hungary’s National Assembly has 199 seats, unchanged since the 2012 reform:

• 106 constituency seats (single‑member districts)
• 93 list seats (party lists + minority lists)

Members of Parliament serve four‑year terms.

How Do the Two Votes Work?

1) Constituency Vote (106 seats)

Hungary is divided into 106 single‑member constituencies. Voters choose one candidate in their district. The candidate with the most votes wins – there is no second round.

2) Party List Vote (93 seats)

Voters also cast a vote for a party list (or a minority list). These votes determine how the 93 proportional seats are distributed.

To appear on the national list, a party must run candidates in at least 27 constituencies across 9 counties and Budapest.

Thresholds and Minority Lists

• The threshold for entering Parliament is 5% of the national party‑list vote.
• Joint lists have higher thresholds:
  • 10% for two‑party lists
  • 15% for lists of three or more parties
• Minority lists do not have a percentage threshold. Instead, they must reach a “preferential quota”, which is significantly lower than the standard threshold.

How Are List Seats Allocated?

Hungary uses a compensatory system. List seats are allocated based on:

• Party‑list votes
• “Fragment votes” from constituencies (votes cast for losing candidates + surplus votes of winning candidates)

This system tends to favour larger parties, especially those with strong constituency performance.

Although the legal framework is the same, several practical and political factors have changed by 2026:

• Constituency boundaries remain those introduced in 2012, but demographic shifts have made some districts significantly larger than others.
• Hungarians abroad now participate in much higher numbers, especially from neighbouring countries.
• The political environment has become more competitive in 2026, with new parties – most notably the Tisza Party – reshaping the landscape.
• EU‑related rule‑of‑law debates and frozen funds have increased international attention on the election.
• Campaigning is more digital, with social media playing a central role.

The electoral system itself, however, has not changed since 2014.

Number 10. Most Americans agree on how to eat a chocolate bunny. 76 percent say the proper way to do it is ears first. 

Number 9. Some world traditions are incredibly elaborate. In Guatemala, for example, carpets stretching up to a mile-long are made from flowers and sawdust during the weeks before Easter. On the day of the holiday, people walk on it on their way to church. 

Number 8. There’s an Easter egg worth over 8 million dollars. Described as a cross between a Faberge and the Damien Hirst skull, the ornament is covered with over a thousand diamonds. Nested inside is a gold egg with a rock crystal dove inside that. 

Number 7. The Easter Bunny has a mysterious past. Details of its emergence as a symbol of the holiday are sketchy, but according to history.com, it traveled to America with the Germans in the 1700’s. The country has long told stories about an egg-laying hare.

Number 6. The holiday brings out some people’s inner jokester. Perhaps giddy because it’s springtime, manufacturers make all sorts of goofy merchandise for Easter. Notable among the stuff is a card that features terrified eggs, a dish of colored liquid, and the caption ‘Where Eggs Come To Dye‘. 

Number 5. Egg decorating goes back hundreds of years. History.com says that the tradition dates back to the 13th century. At the time, eggs were a mandatory Lenten sacrifice, so in preparation for the day they could once again be enjoyed, people made them extra special by embellishing them. 

Number 4. In Australia they have an Easter Bilby instead of a bunny. Well, at least some people are trying to make that the case.

Number 3. The annual White House Easter Egg Roll used to be held at the U.S. Capitol. Concerns for the preservation of the terraced lawn led to the signing of a bill that outlawed the use of the location. 

Number 2. A seriously large amount of candy is sold for the holiday. Annually, about 2 billion dollars worth of sweet stuff ends up in the hands, baskets, and stomachs of American consumers. 

Number 1. The largest egg hunt in history was held at Cypress Gardens in 2007. The Florida theme park hid over half a million eggs. Nearly 10 thousand children and their parents scoured the grounds looking for them.

This is Zero Avenue in South Surrey, and these picturesque homes sit smack on the border. This side is Canada, across the street, the United States. No fences or concrete blocks, just a little ditch and signs warning, “Don’t even think about crossing.”

Oh, it’s very secure, yeah. And people follow the rules, except for one resident. Him. Unfazed by jurisdictional authority, he is the Canadian border-jumping kitty cat.

I think it’s because he’s got four legs, not two.

Decidedly confident, ignoring the watchful gaze of border agents and that machine in the sky that’s as useful as the dog as far as he’s concerned. Several times a day, almost every day, he shows little interest in international law and carries on his very important work of mousing.

Easter is a Christian holiday, when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, Jesus has returned from the dead three days after his death on the cross. Christians believe that Easter is the holiest day in the year, and is celebrated on the first Sunday, following the first full moon, and the first day of spring. As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. In Western Christianity Easter marks the ending of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter.  Lent begins  on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. It’s a kind of spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter. Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.

Shrove Tuesday – húshagyó kedd
The day before the first day of the Christian period of Lent. In the UK, Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day (or Pancake Tuesday to some people) because it is the one day of the year when almost everyone eats a pancake.

Ash Wednesday – hamvazó szerda
The date of Ash Wednesday varies each year according to the date of Easter. It is always six-and-a-half weeks before Easter. The earliest possible date of Ash Wednesday is 4 February and the latest possible date is 10 March. Ash Wednesday is a Christian festival. It marks the beginning of six and a half weeks of repentance, fasting and abstinence in preparation for the most important Christian festival of Easter.

Palm Sunday – virágvasárnap
Palm Sunday is the sixth and last Sunday of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday Christians celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection.

Holy Week is the week before Easter, commemorating events in the last days of Jesus’ life on Earth. It begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Monday.

Maundy Thursday – nagycsütörtök
The Thursday before Easter. Also referred to as “Holy Thursday” or “Great Thursday” in some Christian denominations. It is the feast or holy day on the Thursday before Easter that commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. During the meal Jesus took bread and wine and shared them with his disciples. Christians continue to share bread and wine as part of their worship in church.

THE LAST SUPPER: The Last Supper was probably a Passover meal – the meal which Jewish people share together to celebrate the time when God delivered Moses and the people from slavery in Egypt. The night of Maundy Thursday is the night on which Jesus was betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The Friday before the Christian holiday of Easter, that Christians remember as the day Jesus Christ was crucified. On this day Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Easter Sunday (Easter Day)- húsvét vasárnap
The most holy of Christian sacred days. The day commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from his death by crucifixion. Christians gather together on Easter Sunday for a Sunrise Service. This service takes place on a hillside so everyone can see the sun rise.

Easter Monday, another UK Public Holiday, has little religious significance but is the occasion for numerous secular customs.

Ascension Day – áldozó csütörtök

On Good Friday, Jesus died on the cross. On Easter Sunday, he came back to life. During the forty days which followed that first Easter, he kept appearing to his followers. Ascension Day marks the last appearance of Jesus to the disciples after his resurrection at Easter. The name ‘ascension’ comes from the accounts in the Bible in Mark’s Gospel and Luke’s Gospel that tell of Jesus being taken up into heaven – he ascended.

There are many customs and traditions surrounding Easter in Hungary, and most of them are about celebrating spring and rebirth. Traditional Easter meals are ham, braided loaf and boiled eggs and pickled horseradish. The ham is first eaten on Holy Saturday evening, at the end of Lent. On Easter Sunday, the traditional festive food is lamb.

In some areas of Hungary, Easter Monday is the day of sprinkling. In old times, young girls were dragged out by force to the well or the water trough and poured with a bucket of water or taken by the creek and bathed. Men used to go from house to house to sprinkle girls while singing and rhyming, for which they got red eggs in return. Today, perfume is used for sprinkling instead of water.

The reward of sprinkling was and is still food and drink, mostly spirits, and painted eggs. Eggs are ancient fertility symbols, and the allegory of resurrection in the Christian Church’s symbolism.

Egg painting is one of the oldest traditions, in fact it’s older than Hungary – painted eggs were found in some graves dating back to the pre-Magyar times. The technique was refined over the centuries and each region developed its unique and distinctive motives. Egg decorating became a form of art and it’s still part of the Easter celebrations today.

On Easter Sunday the Easter bunny brings presents for the kids, which they have to find during the Easter egg hunt.

This is just how Britain’s traditional Sunday roast is supposed to look. What makes it so dear to British hearts?

It’s about wholesomeness, I think.

Having fun with your friends, your family. I can never finish a roast.

It’s not just about the roast, the side dishes are what make this a feast. So, what is the best part of it?

For me, it’s the Yorkshire pudding, because my dad used to make it at home. It’s a good reminder of my childhood as a kid.

The potatoes.

I hate running out of gravy.

Many pubs and restaurants around Britain serve a Sunday roast. In fact, it’s the only item on the menu of the Clapton Country Club in London. Up to 300 portions are dished up here every Sunday.

In London in particular, you get a lot of people that move from outside of London, whether it’s from abroad, whether it’s from other areas in Britain, and so they may not be going back to their mothers or grandmothers for Sunday dinner, so they will go out, so there is a big culture of that happening.

This beloved roast is one of beef. Here’s how to make a tasty one. First, the meat has to be marinated in rosemary, thyme, and garlic. Now I’m going to roll the beef to keep the shape of the beef so that it doesn’t shrink and it doesn’t go explode on one side.

The meat is seared for 10 minutes on each side and then roasted at 125 degrees Celsius for another 45 minutes.

Perhaps the most British part of the Sunday roast is actually the Yorkshire pudding. Everybody has a different recipe and method, the same amount of milk, same amount of whole eggs, and same amount of plain flour, and just mix it in.

But how does the Yorkshire pudding get its shape? The trick is lots of hot grease in the baking dish. That puffs up the batter. That goes for 20 minutes for 170 degrees.

Yorkshire pudding is rather heavy. That used to be a way of avoiding too much expensive meat on the table.

What does it taste like? A little bit stodgy, a bit doughy, and if you get it just right, the perfect level of crisp.

Basically tastes like a fried bread. It doesn’t taste like anything specifically. Almost like a crispy savory pancake, but bigger and fluffier.

Along with cabbage and various other root vegetables, the marinated and oven-baked potatoes are critical to the Sunday roast experience. You can never go wrong with crispy potatoes. Soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. You can’t beat potatoes, roast potatoes, you know.

When and where did the history of the Sunday roast begin?

Roast beef became popular in England under Henry VII during the 15th century. The king provided the yeoman guards at the Tower of London with weekly rations of beef, which gave rise to the nickname beef eaters.

That it became a dish eaten on Sundays has to do with the church. You go to the church on the Sunday morning and then you come back and it was almost like a family get-together, certainly to begin with, socializing after going to church.

For those who love the Sunday roast but don’t eat meat, vegetarian and even vegan options are available, the nut roast for instance, or the vegan strudel beef Wellington style.

Inside we got a mix of truffle, wild mushroom, leek, carrots, onion, we cooked with thyme and rosemary and garlic, and we got a vegan cheese and vegan breadcrumb to bind it, and we cooked it, and we wrap it and we roll it with the pancake and a puff pastry.

Meat or no, one question remains, can a Sunday roast be served up on any other day of the week? I don’t really think you can have a Sunday roast any other day, part of the reason is you have the time on a Sunday.

Absolutely not, that is, no, a Sunday roast has got to be on a Sunday, otherwise it’s not a Sunday roast.
