Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. There was an Emperor at that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married. With this thought in mind he outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger military base. Supposedly, Valentine, decided this decree just wasn’t fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine’s actions he had him put to death.

Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailer‘s daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the first ‘valentine’ himself when he wrote her a letter and signed it ‘Your Valentine’, words still used on cards today.

Perhaps we’ll never know the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure…February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating clear back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentines ranks second only to Christmas in number of greeting cards sent.

Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin cupido, “desire”). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.

Ukrainian airline allows female cabin crew to wear trousers and trainers

A Ukrainian budget airline is allowing female cabin crew to swap their skirts and heels for comfy trouser suits and smart white trainers.

SkyUp, one of the country’s biggest low-cost airlines, announced that the new-look comfort option would be offered to female inflight staff from next month.

“Many of my colleagues are permanent clients of podiatrists; their toes and toe nails are constantly damaged by high heels,” SkyUp staff member Daria Solomennaya told the BBC.

“Twelve hours on your feet, flying from Kyiv to Zanzibar and back. If you wear high heels, you are hardly able to walk afterwards,” she added.

SkyUp is not the only airline to offer a more modern, comfy uniform for the female crew – in April 2020, Japan Airlines introduced a trousers option for women working onboard, as well as a range of footwear options including flat shoes.

Eve: There are other ways to find out about properties. Drive or walk around the neighbourhood you like and look for ’rent signs’. Pop in the local estate agent’s, they generally have a bulletin board with notices about flats for rent. But be careful, if you use rental services, the agency may charge a fee!

The original construction of the bridge happened in 1876, but in the 19th century, the bridge was not connected with Margaret Island. It took many years to realise that the bridge needs a path leading to the island to open it up for citizens.

PestBuda reported that the bridge was not built by state order but by the decision of the court of the Austrian Archduke, and they decided to connect the bridge with the island in 1898. They started the construction in 1899, out of excellent Hungarian materials, and it took one year until the path was opened and even Archduke Joseph appeared at the opening celebration on a warm August day 120 years ago.

The bridge was designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin and built by the construction company Maison Ernest Goüin et Cie. between 1872 and 1876. Margaret Bridge was the second permanent bridge in Budapest after Széchenyi Chain Bridge. The reason for this unusual geometry is that the small extension to connect to Margaret Island was inserted into the original design but not built until two decades later due to the lack of funds. There were many though who protested and demanded not to make the pathway to preserve Margaret Island from people.

With the pathway built, Margaret Bridge is the only one in Budapest that has a curve in its structure.

The bridge was destroyed during World War II by German troops and was later rebuilt. By the end of the 2000s, the bridge became dangerous for people and drivers, and needed to be renovated entirely as soon as possible. Reconstruction works started in 2009, and after careful work, the bridge was opened again.

In this picture I can see a fighting couple and between them is their son covering his ears with his hands. He probably doesn’t want to hear his parents shouting at each other. Unfortunately, this is not a very surprising situation because it reminds me of the fact that the number of divorces is increasing year by year. First of all, it is more and more fashionable to remain single and unmarried as long as possible. Everybody is building their careers, living their lives, enjoying their freedom and they do not believe in long-lasting marriages or relationships as much as the earlier generations did. In addition, many of those people who were brave enough to marry and have a family have divorced after a couple of years or are thinking of it at present. This results in many single parents or middle aged people with no kids at all. And children who experience a divorce will probably not believe in the institution of marriage either. So, we are heading towards a world of many single and perhaps lonely people. No wonder nations are dying out. It is interesting, however, that this is mainly characteristic of western and industrialized countries. Even in these countries, it is more likely that more children will be born in a family that has a lower life standard than in one where they could afford having a larger family. Perhaps in a poorer family, where many generations have to live together, the concept of ‘family’ is stronger and they value it much more. In families such as these, the older generations, the grandparents, are also paid more attention to and they are respected and cared for. In western countries it is more commonplace that the grandparents go to a nursing home, the parents are divorced, lead individual lives and the children live on their own from a very young age. Perhaps because it can be afforded. It does not seem to strengthen family ties.

Thankfully, there are always exceptions and sometimes people do find the right kind of partners, have children and bring them up to respect the elders and learn from their wisdom. This way, they are raised to respect ‘the family’, are less likely to turn to drugs, to turn into criminals or lonely sad people and can be the type of people that are a hope to a nation.

There are many different kinds of homes that we live in. You can live in a flat, in an apartment, in a bungalow or in a house. But what makes them different?

Flat:

Sometimes living in a flat is a simple way to get on the property ladder when you are thinking about buying a home. Flats are often part of a larger building that has been separated in to smaller living spaces. The kitchen area is sometimes an open area shared with the living room and your flat will also have a bathroom and bedroom.

Apartment:

You may live in an apartment. An apartment is like a flat, but it is often part of a much bigger complex of buildings. Because apartments are often found in tall buildings you will have to use the lift or elevator to get to your home.

Bungalow:

A bungalow is a word given to a house that is on one ground floor level only, a bit like a chalet. A bungalow does not have any stairs, because all of the living area is on one floor. This usually means you will have a kitchen, bathroom, lounge or living room and bedrooms. This kind of home is popular with older people because you don’t have any stairs to climb when you go to bed.

House

A house is a property that is usually built on two or more floors. On the ground floor you will find the kitchen, the lounge and maybe dining room where you eat your meals. Upstairs you will find the bathrooms and bedrooms. In some larger houses you may also have a small toilet downstairs.  Also in a larger house you may find a garage where you can park your car or bike.
