Easter is a Christian holiday, when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, Jesus has returned from the dead three days after his death on the cross. Christians believe that Easter is the holiest day in the year, and is celebrated on the first Sunday, following the first full moon, and the first day of spring. As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. In Western Christianity Easter marks the ending of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter.  Lent begins  on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. It’s a kind of spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter. Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.

Shrove Tuesday – húshagyó kedd
The day before the first day of the Christian period of Lent. In the UK, Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day (or Pancake Tuesday to some people) because it is the one day of the year when almost everyone eats a pancake.

Ash Wednesday – hamvazó szerda
The date of Ash Wednesday varies each year according to the date of Easter. It is always six-and-a-half weeks before Easter. The earliest possible date of Ash Wednesday is 4 February and the latest possible date is 10 March. Ash Wednesday is a Christian festival. It marks the beginning of six and a half weeks of repentance, fasting and abstinence in preparation for the most important Christian festival of Easter.

Palm Sunday – virágvasárnap
Palm Sunday is the sixth and last Sunday of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday Christians celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection.

Holy Week is the week before Easter, commemorating events in the last days of Jesus’ life on Earth. It begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Monday.

Maundy Thursday – nagycsütörtök
The Thursday before Easter. Also referred to as “Holy Thursday” or “Great Thursday” in some Christian denominations. It is the feast or holy day on the Thursday before Easter that commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. During the meal Jesus took bread and wine and shared them with his disciples. Christians continue to share bread and wine as part of their worship in church.

THE LAST SUPPER: The Last Supper was probably a Passover meal – the meal which Jewish people share together to celebrate the time when God delivered Moses and the people from slavery in Egypt. The night of Maundy Thursday is the night on which Jesus was betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Good Friday – nagypéntek
The Friday before the Christian holiday of Easter, that Christians remember as the day Jesus Christ was crucified. On this day Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Easter Sunday (Easter Day)- húsvét vasárnap
The most holy of Christian sacred days. The day commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from his death by crucifixion. Christians gather together on Easter Sunday for a Sunrise Service. This service takes place on a hillside so everyone can see the sun rise.

Easter Monday – húsvét hétfő
Easter Monday, another UK Public Holiday, has little religious significance but is the occasion for numerous secular customs.

Ascension Day – áldozó csütörtök

On Good Friday, Jesus died on the cross. On Easter Sunday, he came back to life. During the forty days which followed that first Easter, he kept appearing to his followers. Ascension Day marks the last appearance of Jesus to the disciples after his resurrection at Easter. The name ‘ascension’ comes from the accounts in the Bible in Mark’s Gospel and Luke’s Gospel that tell of Jesus being taken up into heaven – he ascended.

Kool-Aid a brand of powdered drink now owned by Kraft Foods, was developed in 1927 by inventor Edwin Perkins. The word Kool is a variation of cool and aid of the suffix -ade, as in lemonade or Gatorade.

The Kool-Aid Man first was the Pitcher Man in a 1950s advertising campaign as pitcher of Kool-Aid with a smiley face. By the mid-1970s, Kool-Aid Man had evolved into a life-sized anthropomorphic character who became famous for his destructive antics. Iain Lindsay, the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Hungary, reads out a telegram sent by his predecessor Sir Leslie Fry to the British foreign ministry on 25 October 1956 in a video shared by the embassy online in 2016.

In the telegram, the diplomat who headed the British mission to Hungary at the time of the 1956 revolution wrote that while it would still be too early to draw conclusions on the reasons and consequences of the events, peaceful protests had turned into a strong anti-Communist movement. This is a colour photo of a mother and her baby. I think it was taken in a supermarket, because the baby is sitting in a trolley. They are at the fruits and vegetables department of the supermarket. The baby is wearing a blue T-shirt, so I guess he is a boy. The mother – who is wearing a black top – is picking up some vegetables for dinner. She is giving a tomato to the baby at the moment. In this picture I see a young couple. They are comfortably sitting on a sofa in the livingroom. They are looking at a thick magazine or some kind of album with pictures. They probably have shared interests and they are spending their free time together. Reading together can be a very good way to relax after work or in your free time. But lots of people prefer to watch TV or movies at home or at the cinema. There is an open laptop on their coffee table between two red mugs. Maybe later they will watch a movie on it. They might also look for some programs in the city, like concerts or theatre performances. However, not many young people go to the theatre nowadays and they almost never go to the opera or to see a ballet performance, for example. Instead it is more popular to spend hours in front of the Internet. We seem to forget that we could choose from a variety of hobbies. Listening to music, playing some instrument, painting, going to the library to borrow books, horse-riding, taking dancing lessons and so many more.

In this picture I can see a fighting couple and between them is their son covering his ears with his hands. He probably doesn’t want to hear his parents shouting at each other. Unfortunately, this is not a very surprising situation because it reminds me of the fact that the number of divorces is increasing year by year. First of all, it is more and more fashionable to remain single and unmarried as long as possible. Everybody is building their careers, living their lives, enjoying their freedom and they do not believe in long-lasting marriages or relationships as much as the earlier generations did. In addition, many of those people who were brave enough to marry and have a family have divorced after a couple of years or are thinking of it at present. This results in many single parents or middle aged people with no kids at all. And children who experience a divorce will probably not believe in the institution of marriage either. So, we are heading towards a world of many single and perhaps lonely people. No wonder nations are dying out. It is interesting, however, that this is mainly characteristic of western and industrialized countries. Even in these countries, it is more likely that more children will be born in a family that has a lower life standard than in one where they could afford having a larger family. Perhaps in a poorer family, where many generations have to live together, the concept of ‘family’ is stronger and they value it much more. In families such as these, the older generations, the grandparents, are also paid more attention to and they are respected and cared for. In western countries it is more commonplace that the grandparents go to a nursing home, the parents are divorced, lead individual lives and the children live on their own from a very young age. Perhaps because it can be afforded. It does not seem to strengthen family ties.

Thankfully, there are always exceptions and sometimes people do find the right kind of partners, have children and bring them up to respect the elders and learn from their wisdom. This way, they are raised to respect ‘the family’, are less likely to turn to drugs, to turn into criminals or lonely sad people and can be the type of people that are a hope to a nation.

The Colosseum is located in Rome, Italy. It is an iconic monument that the whole world knows. The Colosseum has baffled many with its magnificent size and grandiose built. The Colosseum today has become a must see for all who visit Rome.

The largest amphitheater ever built, the Rome Colosseum, also called the Flavian Ampitheater, is situated in the center of Rome. Built under the Flavian Dynasty, construction started in 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD. Built of concrete and sand, the Colosseum could hold up to 80,000 people, though it usually held 65,000. Spectators would come to watch gladiator contests and other spectacles for the public, such as simulated sea wars with props, public executions and mythological dramas. It wasn’t until the medieval era that the building was converted and used as a housing facility, a Christian shrine and a fortress.

The way it looks today is due to robbers stealing stones and earthquakes. In the age when the Colosseum was built, theaters were usually located on hillsides. However, the Colosseum is a free standing structure built on flat ground. Its size is 189 meters long, 156 meters wide with a base area of 24,000 square meters. The outer wall height is 48 meters. The center arena is 87 meters long and 55 meters wide with a 5-meter high barrier wall, which kept the performers inside while the audience sat above.

What we see today is the surviving part of the outer wall containing three stories of arcades and an attic, which is evident by the windows that were built for viewing. Originally these windows were for better views but some also held statues of divinities and characters from Classical mythology. The construction is so sophisticated that the Colosseum gives evidence of the advanced building skills the Romans possessed. 240 mast corbels were positioned around the top of the attic showing that the Colosseum was also built with retractable covering that protected spectators from the sun.

In 2011, a sponsorship from a company made an agreement with Rome officials to donate 25 million euros to restore the Colosseum. Renovation plans include cleaning and repairing the structure and replacing the metal fixtures that hold the arches up. It is estimated to be finished by this year.

“Aww, what a lovely dog” is a phrase you might never hear said about these mutts. The World’s Ugliest Dog® competition features some of the most ‘facially-challenged‘ hounds on the planet. And this hideous gallery showcases some of the entries for this year’s coveted prize. The event is held annually the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California with the philosophy “That dog is so ugly it’s cute!”.
“We celebrate the spirit and imperfections that make these dogs loveable and adoptable,” explains Sarah Cummings, CEO. New at the annual contest, to be held June 26 this year, will be the consolidation of the prior categories, pedigreed and mutt, with awards now given for the World’s Ugliest Dog® and the addition of the Spirit Award. Dogs are judged generally on appearance, personality, and audience interaction. The World’s Ugliest Dog® Spirit Award will honour a dog and owner who have overcome obstacles and/or are providing service to the community based on the dog’s biography.
The World’s Ugliest Dog® winner will receive a grand prize of $1,500 and the Spirit Award Recipient will receive a special award. Other awards include trophies, cash and gifts from sponsors. There has been an Ugly Dog contest in the small Bay Area town of Petaluma for over 50 years, with 27 years at the Sonoma-Marin Fair which trademarked the World’s Ugliest Dog® Contest.
