A wife in Taiwan was recently granted a divorce from her husband, who she accused of ignoring her – and her unanswered text messages were a key piece of evidence.

The wife sent her husband messages via the Line app for six months. The messages were marked as read — meaning he presumably opened and read them – and yet the wife rarely, if ever, got a reply. At one point, the wife sent her husband messages saying she was in the emergency room and demanding to know why he wasn’t answering her messages.

The judge in family court saw the unanswered messages (and the terse, unemotional replies the wife did occasionally get) and concluded the wife had enough grounds for a divorce. The defendant did not inquire about the plaintiff, and the information sent by the plaintiff was read but not replied to. The couple’s marriage is beyond repair.

The Budapest City Park Ice Rink, known in Hungarian as Városligeti Műjégpálya, is one of the most iconic winter attractions in Hungary. Located between Heroes’ Square and the fairy tale Vajdahunyad Castle, it offers a magical setting for skaters of all ages. But the rink is not only beautiful – it also has an impressive history. It is one of the oldest ice rinks in Europe, and today it is considered the largest outdoor artificial ice surface on the continent.

Early Beginnings: The First Ice Rink in Europe

The story of the Budapest Ice Rink began in 1869, when the Pest Ice Skating Association was founded on November 12th. Only a few weeks later, the city’s first official ice rink opened on the lake in City Park. This makes it one of the earliest organized ice skating venues in Europe, and many sources consider it the first large public ice rink on the continent.

The rink officially opened to the public on 29 January 1870, during a ceremony led by Crown Prince Rudolf. At that time, the facilities were very simple. A small wooden building stood next to the ice, offering a place for skaters to warm up and change their shoes. Unfortunately, this first structure burned down in 1874, but it was soon replaced.

Ice skating quickly became extremely popular in Budapest. The Pest Ice Skating Association organized events, competitions, and social gatherings. The first official skating competition took place on 2 February 1870, only a few days after the rink opened. When Buda and Pest united to form Budapest, the association changed its name to the Budapest Ice Skating Association and continued to develop the sport.

Growth and Development Through the Years

The rink grew steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As skating became a fashionable winter activity, more and more people visited the City Park Ice Rink. The location – right next to the picturesque Vajdahunyad Castle – made it even more attractive.

Over the decades, the rink underwent several renovations. Major modernizations took place in 1968 and again in 2011. These upgrades improved the ice quality, expanded the skating surface, and added modern facilities such as skate rental, skate sharpening, and heated changing rooms.

Today, the rink covers more than 12,000 square metres, making it the largest outdoor artificial ice surface in Europe. This enormous size allows hundreds of skaters to enjoy the ice at the same time, whether they are beginners or experienced athletes.

Christmas in Hungary

In Hungary the Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve. In addition to the usual decorations, we also put fondant candies on and under the tree. According to the Hungarian tradition, the Christmas presents are brought by Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve. As for Santa Claus, he visits on December 6 bringing sweets and presents for those well-behaved children who put their clean shoes on the windowsill the night before.

Typical Hungarian Christmas dishes include: fish soup or bouillon, stuffed cabbage, roast turkey with stuffing, and the famous poppy seed or walnut rolls.

The poppy seed or walnut roll is a traditional Hungarian pastry, mostly eaten during the winter holidays. It is basically a sweet bread, known as “bejgli” in Hungary. During the last few decades other variants (such as chestnut, plum jam, prune, or even cocoa) have become popular, too.

Did you know? Poppy is widely consumed in many parts of Central and Eastern Europe. The sugared, milled mature seeds are eaten with pasta, or they are boiled with milk and used as filling or topping on various kinds of sweet pastry. In countries where eating poppy seed is not so common, people think that it can be dangerous or even lead to a positive drug-test.

Another typically Hungarian Christmas sweet is ”szaloncukor” (literally: parlour candy), which is a type of sweets, traditionally associated with Christmas in Hungary. It is usually made of fondant, covered by chocolate and wrapped in shiny coloured foil. It is often used as decoration on Christmas trees, hung on with strings or small metal hooks.

Fondant candies originally came in a few flavours (vanilla and strawberry for example), but now there is a wide variety of different kinds of candies, including jelly, coconut, hazelnut and lots of other flavours.

As far as Christmas fairs are concerned, among the many Budapest Christmas markets, one of the most popular ones is held on Vörösmarty Square, in the heart of the city’s 5^th district. This traditional Budapest Fair is a great place to get your unique Christmas presents, as here you can always find some exclusive and hand-made art products and all kinds of decorations, made with authentic techniques. While you’re looking for the perfect gifts or winter souvenirs, you can enjoy a variety of programs, listening to folk music, taking part in a Christmas tree decorating competition or sipping mulled wine and feasting on the traditional Hungarian dishes and cakes from the open kitchens around the square. If you haven’t been to this fair yet, you should try “lángos” (deep-fried bread dough, usually topped with garlic, sour cream and cheese) and “kürtös kalács” (hollow, cylinder shaped pastry, baked over an open fire with ground walnut or other sweet coatings), but you will have an extra hard time choosing what to eat this time.  A novelty in recent years has been the even wider selection of culinary delights – stuffed cabbages, grilled meat and fish, strudels and the other Christmas delicacies.

Woman: Well, I think, it’s obvious. It’s Thanksgiving weekend, everybody visits their family. I’m so excited to meet them and talk to them in person. I know that we often call each other and continuously chat on Messenger, but that’s not the same as meeting them face to face.
Man: Yes, that’s true. What are your plans for Thanksgiving this year?
Woman: The same as every year. A sumptuous Thanksgiving feast of roast turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, corn bread, and pumpkin pie for dessert.
Man: Sounds good, but you know that I don’t really like pumpkin pie. It’s too sweet for my taste.
Woman: I’ll make some apple pie as well, just for you.
Man: Thanks, honey. Any other plans apart from the meal?
Woman: Your parents will be in town. We might invite them over. Your dad loves watching football with you after the Thanksgiving meal and spending a lazy afternoon with the kids.
Man: Good idea. Dad can be really funny when he cheers for the underdog team. He always supports the underdogs. That’s his policy. How are the kids coming home? Are they going to fly or drive?
Woman: I don’t know. But they’d better fly. The roads can get terribly busy before Thanksgiving and I would be anxious about their safety.
Man: Both of them are excellent drivers, so you shouldn’t worry. Are you going to call them to arrange the details or shall I?
Woman: I will call them tonight. The sooner we know the better.
