A wife in Taiwan was recently granted a divorce from her husband, who she accused of ignoring her – and her unanswered text messages were a key piece of evidence.

The wife sent her husband messages via the Line app for six months. The messages were marked as read — meaning he presumably opened and read them – and yet the wife rarely, if ever, got a reply. At one point, the wife sent her husband messages saying she was in the emergency room and demanding to know why he wasn’t answering her messages.

The judge in family court saw the unanswered messages (and the terse, unemotional replies the wife did occasionally get) and concluded the wife had enough grounds for a divorce. The defendant did not inquire about the plaintiff, and the information sent by the plaintiff was read but not replied to. The couple’s marriage is beyond repair.

The Budapest City Park Ice Rink, known in Hungarian as Városligeti Műjégpálya, is one of the most iconic winter attractions in Hungary. Located between Heroes’ Square and the fairy tale Vajdahunyad Castle, it offers a magical setting for skaters of all ages. But the rink is not only beautiful – it also has an impressive history. It is one of the oldest ice rinks in Europe, and today it is considered the largest outdoor artificial ice surface on the continent.

Early Beginnings: The First Ice Rink in Europe

The story of the Budapest Ice Rink began in 1869, when the Pest Ice Skating Association was founded on November 12th. Only a few weeks later, the city’s first official ice rink opened on the lake in City Park. This makes it one of the earliest organized ice skating venues in Europe, and many sources consider it the first large public ice rink on the continent.

The rink officially opened to the public on 29 January 1870, during a ceremony led by Crown Prince Rudolf. At that time, the facilities were very simple. A small wooden building stood next to the ice, offering a place for skaters to warm up and change their shoes. Unfortunately, this first structure burned down in 1874, but it was soon replaced.

Ice skating quickly became extremely popular in Budapest. The Pest Ice Skating Association organized events, competitions, and social gatherings. The first official skating competition took place on 2 February 1870, only a few days after the rink opened. When Buda and Pest united to form Budapest, the association changed its name to the Budapest Ice Skating Association and continued to develop the sport.

Growth and Development Through the Years

The rink grew steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As skating became a fashionable winter activity, more and more people visited the City Park Ice Rink. The location – right next to the picturesque Vajdahunyad Castle – made it even more attractive.

Over the decades, the rink underwent several renovations. Major modernizations took place in 1968 and again in 2011. These upgrades improved the ice quality, expanded the skating surface, and added modern facilities such as skate rental, skate sharpening, and heated changing rooms.

Today, the rink covers more than 12,000 square metres, making it the largest outdoor artificial ice surface in Europe. This enormous size allows hundreds of skaters to enjoy the ice at the same time, whether they are beginners or experienced athletes.

Research Says Drinking Wine Is More Important Than Exercise

No one plans on living forever, but most of us would like to live as long as possible. The idea of adding more candles to your birthday cake every year sounds amazing. We’re here with some good news. You might actually be able to do so with a glass of wine.

Scientists have tried to find the secret to a longer life throughout the years. A study, named The 90+ Study, focused on the oldest of the old, that is, people above 90, to figure out what has kept them going for so long.

The team of experts was trying to answer several questions and to determine the factors linked to a longer life. Participants did neurological and neurophysiological tests twice every year, and information about their medical history, diet, activities and lifestyle habits were carefully collected by the researchers. The researchers found that people who consumed one to two glasses of beer, wine, or other alcoholic drinks per day had a 9-15 percent lower likelihood of dying compared to those who abstain from all forms of drink. Participants who exercised 15 to 45 minutes a day cut the same risk of mortality by 15-35 percent.”

Yet, they note that the key is moderation. Professor Jim Becker stresses the importance of moderation as well: “The data are generally consistent with the idea that moderate intake of certain kinds of drinks, and in particular red wines, is associated with certain positive health outcomes.

But that doesn’t mean that if you suddenly decide at the age of 70 to start drinking now that that’s necessarily the solution.”

Dr. Steven Lamm, MD, clinical professor adds: “Alcohol injures every organ in your body. It’s a poison. However, there is a paradox and that is that a moderate amount of alcohol reduces the risk of heart disease.” The Mayo Clinic recommends one drink to people older than 65, and two drinks to men younger than this age. Studies have shown that moderate consumption lowers the risk of diabetes, stroke, and death due to heart disease.

Therefore, feel free to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your lunch or dinner, but never go overboard. Excessive consumption can lead to severe health issues and a heightened risk of death from all causes.

The homeless man at McDonald’s

This evening after work, I was approached by this guy in the car park of the shopping centre. As I sat in my car, he tapped on the window and said, excuse me sir but can you spare some change for a burger, I’m homeless! My first reaction was, “No mate I’m sorry I’ve no change.”

His polite reply was” No problem, sir and thanks very much, I apologise for asking you, have a great day” and it made me think twice as he walked off across the car park. I paused for a minute, then looked to see where he was walking too. He actually walked towards McDonald’s in the square. To me, this guy seemed genuine and hungry. My first thought, he’s maybe a junkie, a drug addict looking to score his next fix. I drove out of the shopping centre and across to McDonald’s after him, to witness him looking on the ground for any coins in front of the restaurant. I pulled up beside him and said, sorry mate but sometimes I’m sceptical of giving money to people who seem to be homeless and ask for spare change, my reason is, that I think people just use the money for their next dose of drugs or alcohol. I apologised and I asked him If it was OK, if I buy him a burger in McDonald’ and his reply was, “Thank you so much.” I parked up my car and walked into McDonald’s with this guy, who I now know as Nathan. I asked him his name and told him to order what you want off the menu. He ordered a Big Mac Meal, and the customer assistant asked, “Would you like to go large?”.

Nathan looked at me and I smiled, I said, “Go ahead mate, no problem.” He even had the manners to ask. Nathan couldn’t stop saying thanks and when receiving his €6.99 meal, he was so polite in asking the customer assistant for salt and ketchup. I asked Nathan if was it OK if I joined him, we sat down and chatted for a few minutes. Nathan told me he lost his brother two years ago and his sister took her own life a month ago. He is now sleeping rough at the back of a school or college, in a sleeping bag! My heart went out to this guy. I asked Nathan if it was OK to take his picture and post it up here to bring to the attention of the public that, not all homeless people are junkies, or thieves or beggars. Some are genuinely suffering and need support. Where’s he going to get his next meal from and what challenges does he continue to face daily? It only took 20 minutes of my time and a few euros to help this lad and actually sit and speak with him for a bit. When I got up to leave, he said, “Thanks so much and God Bless You!” Those few words meant a lot to me.

Now I know there will be a few trolls who will think, I’m trying to be a hero. Well, anyone who really knows me, will be sure I’m not. I’m just trying to give one of our own Irish citizens a dig-out. Who knows when your luck could change? Never judge a book by its cover! Maybe my encounter will give people a different view on life.

Michigan judge sentences Walmart shoplifters to wash cars in the parking lot

A Michigan judge is putting sponges in the hands of shoplifters, ordering them to wash cars in a Walmart parking lot when spring arrives.

Judge Jeffrey Clothier hopes the unusual form of community service discourages people from stealing from Walmart and rewards shoppers who could see higher prices, or possibly lose stores, if thefts continue. The car washes will be free.

Clothier believes 75 to 100 people eventually will be ordered to wash cars at weekend events at that location in March and April. The judge said Walmart is “on board” and will provide water and supplies. The company’s Arkansas headquarters didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment Friday.

Clothier said he was shocked to see the breadth of retail thefts when he joined the bench in January, adding that offenders were from all over Michigan and outside the state.

“I think it will be humiliating to be out there washing cars if you see someone you know,” Clothier said.

Walmart designated a parking space for police because of frequent calls about thefts, township Supervisor Scott Bennett said.

“It’s an innovative approach,” county Prosecutor David Leyton said of the car washes. “Even if it deters one person, then there’s some success there.”

And shoplifters won’t be the only people up to their elbows in suds. “I will be there washing cars with them,” the judge said.

Cycling in the city

Woman: I heard you ride your bike a lot these days, Colin.

Man: Oh, yes. Every day I cycle to work.

W: And is it easy to get around the city by bike?

M: Yes, there is a cycle path that goes right around the city, and various shorter ones within it.

W: So, you don’t have to worry about road traffic when using them?

M: No, as these paths are up on the pavement rather than in the road, so it’s pedestrians not motorists I have to be careful about as they tend to wander onto the cycle paths. Some people walk along them as if they had every right to.

W: Perhaps the authorities could do something to make pedestrians aware what it means, how it works.

M: Absolutely. You know, every day I get annoyed as I’m shouted at by people who still haven’t caught on that it’s me that has the right of way, not them.

W: Wouldn’t be it easier to take the bus or the underground?

M: Maybe it would but there’s no pleasure in that and they both get so crowded. Besides, on the bike I enjoy feeling the wind in my face and a sense that the city’s mine, I can go where I want, when I want.

W: But the network of cycle paths doesn’t cover the whole city, does it?

M: No but in those places, I must admit I can even get up on the pavement to avoid traffic lights or go the wrong way down one-way streets. And of course, cycling is just so healthy, I’ve never felt fitter.

W: That’s good! I’m really envious of you. It could be good for others to follow your example.

M: Definitely. I hope they will and I’ve got reasons to hope. For instance, a couple of years ago someone in the town hall came up with a nice idea to promote cycling in the city.

W: What was that?

M: On the first Sunday of every month, a number of the main streets are closed to traffic for a few hours and are given over to cyclists.

W: And does the idea work?

M: Yes, it’s gradually growing in popularity, and there’s a real festival atmosphere now, with thousands of cyclists of all ages turning out every month. It’s a good start but there’s a long way to go. We need a whole series of additional measures to make the roads more cycle-friendly. Sometimes you come across some really nasty drivers. I can by cycling along when some car or van cuts in front of me or comes up right close to me almost touching my back wheel. Sometimes I lose my balance and nearly fall. They seem to resent me for being there and get impatient if they have to slow down for me. I got beeped at all the time, it’s very unpleasant. I couldn’t get used to it. But it won’t stop me riding my bike and I hope things will get better.
