Today, the word blockbuster is usually associated with movies, whether you’re talking about a film that achieved massive success at the box office or a certain defunct video rental chain. Though its meaning is innocuous now, back in the 1940s, it was used to describe something much darker.

According to TIME, the original blockbusters were large, highly destructive bombs used during World War II. The magazine first printed the word in a November 29, 1942, article about an Allied bombing in Italy; the nickname came from the weapon’s ability to decimate entire city blocks. As the British Royal Air Force continued to drop the bombs throughout the war, the name caught on, and it was soon used to refer to anything particularly explosive or extravagant.

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) is widely considered the first summer blockbuster, but Hollywood’s connection to the word predates it by a few decades. Eating chocolate cake as part of a full breakfast can help you lose weight, say scientists. It sounds too good to be true but new research says having dessert – along with the traditional fry up – burns off the pounds.

Morning is the best time to consume sweets because that’s when the body’s metabolism is most active – and we have the rest of the day to work off the calories, a new study shows. Eating cookies or chocolate as part of breakfast that includes proteins and carbs also helps stem the craving for sweets later.

Researchers split 193 clinically obese, non-diabetic adults into two groups who consumed either a low-carb diet that included a 300-calorie breakfast or a balanced 600-calorie breakfast that included a chocolate cake dessert.

The group that consumed a bigger breakfast, including dessert, experienced few if any cravings for these foods later in the day. At the end those who had consumed a 600 calorie breakfast had lost an average of 18 kgs more per person than their peers.

Although both groups consumed the same daily total calories the participants in the low-carbohydrate diet group had less satisfaction and felt that they were not full. Their cravings for sugar and carbohydrates were more intense and eventually caused them to cheat on the diet plan. This also suggests that the dessert group will be more successful at keeping the weight off. Attempting to avoid sweets entirely can create a psychological addiction to these same foods in the long-term.

A meal in the morning provides energy for the day’s tasks, aids in brain functioning and kick-starts the body’s metabolism, making it crucial for weight loss and maintenance. And breakfast is the meal that most successfully regulates ghrelin, the hormone that increases hunger.

While the level of ghrelin rises before every meal, it is suppressed most effectively at breakfast time.

Basing their study on this fact, the researchers hoped to determine whether meal time and composition impacted weight loss in the short and long term or if it was a simple matter of calorie count. One of the biggest challenges that people face is keeping weight off in the long-term. Ingesting a higher proportion of our daily calories at breakfast makes sense. It’s not only good for body function but it also alleviates cravings. Highly restrictive diets that forbid desserts and carbohydrates are initially effective but often cause dieters to stray from their food plans a result of withdrawal-like symptoms. They wind up regaining much of the weight they lost during the diet proper.

Ultimately this shows a diet must be realistic to be adopted as part of a new lifestyle. Curbing cravings is better than deprivation for weight loss success.

Hungary’s first railroad line was built in 1846 between Pest – which had 300,000 residents at that time – and the nearby town of Vác. The terminal of this railway was more or less in the place of today’s Nyugati Railway Station, and was called Pesti Indóház. Due to a high increase in traffic, there soon came a need for expansion, which the management of the city only allowed if the new railway station would align with the Grand Boulevard. The owner, the Austrian State Railways, decided to demolish the Pesti Indóház and construct the Nyugati Railway Station in its place (the original building was not pulled down until the new station was constructed in order to let traffic pass smoothly).

Certain contemporary ideas even envisioned Keleti Railway Station to be built on the Grand Boulevard as well, which would have been beneficial for various reasons – and also incredibly expensive, as the railway lines would have been elongated on a viaduct all the way to the boulevard. Finally, the ministry signed the cheaper solution, and the new “rival” station was built at the end of Rákóczi Road.

The design plans of the new station, with a cost of 8 million forints, were made by Austrian architect August de Serres, who was later employed by the company of the world-famous designer of the Eiffel Tower, Gustave Eiffel. As a result of the construction works initiated in 1874, the station was erected with a light structure, and appeared as an imposing edifice with a pioneering spirit amid the contemporary architectural trends in the city. Due to its innovative iron structure, many people visited Budapest specifically to admire the new station.

Nyugati Station was built with a 146-meter-long hall deliberately made so that all train carriages could be reached from beneath a covered platform. The 6,153-square-meter, 25-meter-high hall with its glass façade was adjusted to the curves of the boulevard. The side structures were enhanced with windows, and were decorated by – according to the trends of those times – two tall domed corner towers on each side, and a French-style dome in the middle. They installed a central ticket center, waiting rooms, baggage storage, a station master’s office, police and guest rooms, and other offices, as well as a separate waiting room for Emperor Franz Joseph himself.

The official opening of the then-so-called Budapesti pályaudvar (Budapest Railway Station) was on October 28, 1877, and the opening ceremony was attended by various influential people of the era, such as ministers, politicians, members of Parliament, the royal judge, and even the national commander in chief, who paid a visit with a huge military escort. The notables were welcomed and guided by de Serres himself, and the first train embarked on its first journey to Vienna from here two days later.

The station played an important role in the modernization of the Magyar railways: Siemens & Halske’s modern switching system was introduced here for the first time in 1881, and later, the first electric Kandló locomotives embarked on their trial journeys from here. In 1891, when the station became the property of the Hungarian State Railways, it was renamed Nyugati Railway Station. This name had actually nothing to do with the station’s location within the city, or with the points of the compass, but with the company who financed the construction. At those times, the railway station’s hall served as a sort of a mini city; mansions were built around it, the main tram line had a stop here, and it housed a luxury restaurant, a hairdressing salon, and several other commercial units.

Its first spectacular expansion began in 1901, and lasted for three years; on the side near Podmaniczky Street they established a manufactory, a coal-delivery railway station, and a relief engine station; the Northern Freight Train Station was opened in 1908, and ten years later, the station at Irinyi puszta was installed. After the Treaty of Trianon, the country was in a dire economic state, which resulted in ideas for the elimination of Nyugati Railway Station, and the installation of a new station at Rákosrendező. Eventually, this never happened, but some restructuring still fit in the budget: the trains heading to Cegléd and Szob were separated at the Budapest Zoo.

The building unfortunately suffered serious damage during the heavy fighting of World War II. The system could only be reinstalled in the summer of 1945, and the renovation of the buildings took several years. At the end of the war, there were plans for ceasing the station’s work, but finally due to the lack of financial funding, traffic was ‘only’ temporarily withdrawn from Nyugati.

In the ’50s, the most modern transfer station of the time operated here. Occasionally, the important freight trains took the place of – in the past – less significant passenger trains. The station’s strangest and at the same time most fortunate accident dates back to October 2, 1962. During a 40 km/h reversing, ten carriages became detached, and broke through the glass wall of the waiting room; the last carriage landed on the boulevard. As the unfolding disaster was announced through the loudspeaker quickly enough, only one person – an elderly lady – was injured severely.

In 1975, due to considerable corrosive damage, the building was declared to be life-threatening. Instead of a total demolishment, the authorities instead opted for a full reconstruction that was finished in December of 1979, so “Budapest’s Gate” could form a structural unit with the rebuilt Marx Square (today’s Nyugati Square). The square shone as a real transport hub; among many others, tram 47/49 ran all the way here, and the terminal of one of the trolleybuses was also here.

Budapest’s next modernization, the construction of metro 3 in 1981, affected the area again. An underpass system was built beneath the station and the square, while an overpass was built between Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road and Váci Road. For this reason, in 1978 the notorious hotel by Nyugati Railway Station that the residents nicknamed Westend was demolished by explosion.

The next memorable milestone in the station’s history was in 1999, when a few tracks were closed down due to the construction of WestEnd City Center. The newly installed parking lot and the roof terrace of the shopping center covered the former roof tracks, and the façade underwent a facelift as well. In 2005, due to the possible establishment of a government district, the idea of the station’s demolition once again re-emerged, and a possible new location was again Rákosmező, where people could have traveled on the elongated line of the Millennium Underground. Due to its historic significance, the station’s hall would have been preserved with a different function.

In 2006, smaller tracks and buildings were demolished, but no serious alterations have occurred ever since. Some people think that the renovation of a technically obsolete hall and the expansion of the system equipped with 17 platforms would be necessary. Renovation plans for this not-so-pristine station have already been made, but so far, only the nearby Nyugati Square has been beautified.

Ryan Reynolds sent the internet into a frenzy when he revealed Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine in the next Deadpool film.

The Canadian actor has been open about his desire for the adamantium–clawed anti-hero to join his foul-mouthed mercenary on-screen.

Previous films have made references to Wolverine – with Jackman making a post-credit cameo in Deadpool 2.

And Reynolds finally confirmed what fans had hoped in a 90-second reveal.

The video has had more than 25 million views, been liked one million times and has received hundreds of thousands of replies – many excited about the news – in less than a day.

He tweeted the announcement with the caption “Hard keeping my mouth sewn shut about this one” – a reference to Deadpool’s previous appearance in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

In the video, he sits on a sofa and talks about his desire to make Deadpool’s first official appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) “feel special”.

He narrates about his search for inspiration over the top of a montage of him performing various tasks.

The Bank of England says new bank notes featuring a portrait of King Charles III are “expected to enter circulation by mid-2024″, with the image to be revealed before the end of this year.

New coins will be produced, says the Royal Mint, and will appear “in line with demand from banks and post offices”.

BBC News was given a first glimpse of the 50p and a commemorative £5 Crown which include an image of the King by British sculptor Martin Jennings.

The coins follow centuries of tradition with the monarch now facing left – the opposite way to his predecessor.

As with previous British kings, and unlike the Queen, he wears no crown.

King Charles personally approved the effigy, and was understood to be pleased with the likeness.

The coins will be sold to collectors by The Royal Mint from the first week of October. The 50p coin will be available for general use well before the end of the year, distributed according to demand by banks, building societies and post offices.

Almost 70,000 of the current post boxes, about 60% of the total, date from the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. There are only about 170 surviving from the short reign of Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936.

Boxes already under construction or ready for installation will continue to have the late Queen’s cypher, Royal Mail says.

Where royal cyphers appear on buildings, it will be up to individual organisations to decide when or if they will be updated.

ORIGINAL IDEA: A MALE FIGURE?

Myth: Word claims that the Liberty Statue was supposed to be honouring István Horthy, the son of Miklós Horthy. István died from his wounds, suffered when his plane crashed in 1942. Although his statue was finished by 1944, it was never erected due to the German occupation and bombing of Budapest.

Truth: there were no talks about a Liberty Statue illustrating István Horthy. The idea of erecting a statue atop Gellért Hill came in 1945 to commemorate the Soviet soldiers fallen in WWII and was modelled after Erzsébet Thuránszky. The 54-metre-tall statue was finished in April 1947 and was supposed to be erected at the Horváth garden behind Buda Castle, but the Soviets were not keen on the location, as it would not have gotten much attention there.

SACRIFICES MADE FOR THE SAKE OF ART

The Liberty Statue was made by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl, who actually had something to do with the Horthy family, as he was commissioned for three Horthy statues. Strobl arrived in Budapest from Sopron for this purpose, and he met the model by accident on the corners of Dózsa György Street and Thököly Street.

Since he asked her to be his model right on the spot, Erzsébet thought him to be a satyr. The young woman finally said yes when the artist revealed who he was. Erzsébet was not offered payment for modelling, and she did not even ask for any money. The woman worked as an x-ray assistant at a sanatorium in Sopron.

Some of the sacrifices that Erzsébet had to make included cutting her hair short and holding a palm branch above her head for hours, while cold air was blown at her with the help of a ventilator to create the natural, windy flow of the statue.

FROM LIBERATION STATUE TO LIBERTY STATUE

The statue was originally referred to as the Liberation Statue, but when the communist regime ended in Hungary, and the statue was renovated, the inscriptions and plaques written in Cyrillic letters resembling Soviet ideologies were removed. Thanks to the change in the political system and the removal of Soviet items, the name of the statue was changed from Liberation to Liberty.

A SPACE TRIP

Even though only a small version of the Liberty Statue was taken to space by the first Hungarian astronaut, Bertalan Farkas in 1980, Hungarians like to associate the miniature with the original,thereby claiming that the Liberty Statue has been to space. After all, it does sound nice that the Moon is a great admirer too of Budapest’s iconic statue, right?

“It was a wee bit emotional,” says Donald MacPhee, reflecting on how he reunited a woman with the wedding ring she lost in a potato patch in the Western Isles 50 years ago. Peggy MacSween, now 86, believed she had lost the golden ring forever and had given up ever seeing it again after it slipped off her finger while she gathered potatoes at her home town.

She said of losing it: “I was shaking the sand out of my gloves and the ring disappeared. I didn’t know until I got home. I went out to the field once or twice to look for it, but there was no way of finding it.”

Her husband, John, whom she married in July 1958 and died a few years ago, bought her a replacement while they were on holiday.

But after learning about the lost ring during a neighbourly chat, fellow islander and single-minded metal detectorist MacPhee made it his mission to unearth the treasure.

He spent three days searching the sandy coastal meadow where the potato patch once was with a metal detector. The area had become a popular drinking spot over the years, resulting in a significant number of thrown away and buried can ring pulls that confused the sonic search with the detector for the ring.

MacPhee, who runs Benbecula’s Nunton House hostel, explained: “For three days I searched and dug 90 holes. The trouble is gold rings make the same sound on the detector as ring pulls and I got a lot of those – as well as many other things such as horseshoes and cans. But on the third day, I found the ring. I was absolutely flabbergasted. I had searched an area of 5,000 square metres. It was a one in a 100,000 chance and certainly my best find. It was a fluke. There was technique involved, but I just got lucky.”

After dislodging it from the turf, MacPhee brought the ring straight to its owner. “I was surprised to see that it was in immaculate condition and that it still fit perfectly when she put it on her finger.”

Taking up the story, MacSween said: “He just came to the door and said: ‘I have something to show you.’ It was the ring. I couldn’t believe it, but there it was. I thought I would never see it again.”

MacPhee said he had started metal detecting seven years ago after watching YouTube videos. “That got me interested and this is for many reasons my best find,” he said.

MacSween said she plans to wear the ring alongside the replacement her husband, John, bought her after the original was lost. She said the ring is a reminder of her husband.
