Halászlé (Fisherman’s Soup): Another quintessential part of the Hungarian culinary art. It is a river fish broth, which is typically intensely seasoned with paprika and several other piquant herbs. Traditionally this soup is cooked outside, over a fire, for several hours. That instantly brings out the intensity of the flavors. The fish, its main ingredient, is always locally sourced from the Danube or Tisza.

Meggyleves (Sour Cherry Soup): During a hot summer season nothing can refresh better than a plate of this authentic Hungarian soup. Usually this meal is served chilled, giving a sense of reinvention to the canonic understanding of the soups. Its main ingredients are: sour cherries, sour cream and sugar.

Paprikás Csirke (Chicken Paprikash): From its name one can already guess that the most important element of all is, of course, paprika. One of the most recognizable dishes of the Hungarian gastronomic feast is blend of a creamy, spicy sauce with a soft fresh chicken. Traditionally served with so-called nokedli (dumplings).

Nokedli (Dumplings): This particular side dish has a dumpling-like texture to it, however, it is considered to be noodles. Some genius has come up with its recipe to accompany stews and meats.

Túrós Csusza (Cottage Cheese Noodles): It is an original meal of the Magyar cuisine. Wide noodles are mixed with a cottage cheese, with a little twist to it – tiny pieces of fatty bacon are added along the way, to create diversity of flavors.

Pörkölt (Meat Stew): This rich stew is usually made of beef or chicken. Meat, alongside tomatoes, onions and paprika are cooked on the open air, over the fire. A wondrous side dish option: nokedli.

Gesztenyepüré (Chestnut Purée): An absolute Hungarian dessert specialty. A blend of chestnut purée, sugar and rum. Usually served with  whipped cream.

Dobostorta (Dobos Cake): A guilty pleasure of every Hungarikum admirer. A sponge cake, layered with chocolate butter-cream, frosted with a crystallized caramel and nuts on the edges, adding a complexity of flavor.

Somlói Galuska (Somloi Trifle): Purely sweet cake, made of three different types of sponge cakes: chocolate, plain and walnut; with an undertoneof the rum, which is present in the dark chocolate sauce; studded with raising and walnuts and glazed with whipped cream.

Tokaji Aszú (Aszu wine from Tokaj): Full-bodied, fruity, dessert wine from Hungary’s finest wine region – Tokaj. A vibrant flavor of the Tokaji Aszú wine is admired by thousands of people all over the globe. And of course, Paprika: phenomenon of the original Magyar culinary art. This authentic Hungarian spice can vary in colour and pungency. Paprika instantly enhances the flavor of any meal, simply creating an inimitable taste. Mother’s Day has been celebrated around the world since ancient times, sometimes as part of a religious event, more and more as a commercial holiday, but always to honor motherhood and mothers, their roles in our families and society. However, the celebration of this holiday falls on various dates in many parts of the world. In most cultures it is held sometime in spring, mostly on the second Sunday in the month of May.

In Hungary Mother’s Day falls on the first Sunday of May. It has been a holiday since 1925 when it was first celebrated by the Hungarian Red Cross Youth in connection with the Catholic traditions honoring the Virgin Mary. Three years later it was made an official school holiday.

Some say the tradition of Mother’s Day can be traced back to Ancient Greece, the spring festivals dedicated to Cybele, mother goddess of fertility and Rhea, mother of gods, and later to the Romans’ Hilaria festival. The Hindu religion also preceded the Western-type holiday by a couple of centuries with its “Mother Pilgrimage fortnight” celebration. It has also been present as the religious Mothering Sunday celebration in the United Kingdom since the 17th century. However, its modern-day, capitalist version originated from America.

There could be some debate about who actually started the Mother’s Day tradition in the US. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe created a special day for mothers through a protest for peace in Boston, remembering all mothers who were left without sons and husbands following the Franco-Prussian War. However, Anna M. Jarvis’ attempts to establish a nationally and internationally acknowledged public Mother’s Day holiday were far more effective. She chose the second Sunday of May for the day to commemorate her own and all the other mothers of the world. She dedicated seven years of energy and time campaigning to reach her goal. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson officially recognized Mother’s Day as a holiday. To Jarvis’s great sorrow and disappointment, it soon became commercialized by florists, greeting card companies, candy and gift shop merchants. It is through their propaganda that Mother’s Day soon appeared on the European continent as well and spread throughout the world in its modern form. Anna Jarvis, however, spent the rest of her life fighting against the holiday she had established.

The reason why the ‘original’ date of Mother’s Day was changed in some countries and cultures was because people wanted to fit it into already existing religious, historical, legendary or even political celebrations dedicated to motherhood.

For example, Mother’s Day in Bolivia is also the date of a battle in which women participated and in some ex-communist countries people honor mothers on the socialist International Women’s Day.

We would be nowhere without our mothers but what about our fathers?

Father’s Day, which is celebrated around the world on the third Sunday of June and on other dates, also originates from America. It was founded not long after Jarvis’s Mother’s Day in 1910 in Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd who felt her father, a Civil War veteran raising six children as a single parent, deserved to be honored as any mother, together with other fathers of the world. Although at first it did not become as successful as its counterpart, soon it was also discovered by manufacturers of ties, tobacco, pipes and other typically father-presents who helped Sonora spread the holiday with commercial promotion. Eventually, decades after its creation, it only became truly accepted and popular in the mid 1980’s.

On March 15th we commemorate the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848-1849. This is also a public holiday in Hungary.

The Hungarian Revolution of 1848 was one of many revolutions that year and closely linked to other revolutions of 1848 in the Habsburg areas. The revolution in the Kingdom of Hungary grew into a war for independence from Habsburg rule.

Many of its leaders and participants, including Lajos Kossuth, István Széchenyi, Sándor Petőfi, József Bem, are among the most respected national figures in Hungarian history, and the anniversary of the revolution’s outbreak, on March 15th, is one of Hungary’s three national holidays.

The Revolution started on March 15th in 1848, with bloodless events in Pest and Buda, followed by various insurrections throughout the kingdom, which enabled Hungarian reformists to declare Hungary’s new government and the first Prime Minister of Hungary, Lajos Batthyány.

The new government approved a sweeping reform package, referred to as the “April laws” (also referred to as the “March Laws”), which essentially created a democratic political system in Hungary. They also demanded that the Hungarian government receive and expend all taxes raised in Hungary, and have authority over Hungarian regiments in the Habsburg army.

In the summer of 1848, aware that they were on the path to civil war, the Hungarian government ministers attempted to gain Habsburg support against Conservative Josip Jelačić. By the end of August, the imperial government in Vienna officially ordered the Hungarian government in Pest to end plans for a Hungarian army. Jelačić then took military action against the Hungarian government without any official order. War between Austria and Hungary had officially begun.

Initially, the Hungarian forces (Honvédség) achieved several victories fighting with Austrian armies (at Pákozd in September 1848 and at Isaszeg in April 1849). The war led to the October Crisis in Vienna, when insurgents attacked a garrison on its way to Hungary to support Jelačić’s forces.

After Vienna was recaptured by imperial forces, General Windischgrätz and 70,000 troops were sent to Hungary to crush the last challenge to the Austrian Empire. Julius Jacob von Haynau, the leader of the Austrian army who then became governor of Hungary for a few months of retribution, ordered the execution of 13 leaders of the Hungarian army in Arad and the Prime Minister Batthyány in Pest.

Falling in love

People usually fall in love in two ways. One is when you meet somebody, start talking, find out that you have things in common and spend more and more time together. You enjoy each other’s company, you find the other person attractive and fun. First maybe you will have a crush on them, in secret. You go on dates. You have candlelit dinners and go on romantic walks. After the first kiss you start feeling butterflies in your stomach. You have fallen in love. If this feeling is mutual, you start going out. You become a couple in a relationship.

Another way people fall for somebody is called love at first sight. They see each other for the first time, maybe they meet on a blind date event, and fall in love at once. It depends on what kind of person you are. Some people say love at first sight is just about physical attraction, but there are many long and steady relationships that started with chemistry.

We are different, so we react in various ways when we are in love.Some people are timid and shy, so when they meet somebody they find attractive, their heart skips a beat and they blush. They are at loss for words. Other people make the first step and they are not so afraid of being rejected. They start flirting to draw attention to themselves. They give compliments, look their best and try to seduce the person they like.

Sometimes love can be very painful. This can happen when somebody doesn’t return your love or if they break up with you. It is also very heartbreaking when somebody cheats on you or leaves you for another person.

Love to marriage

If you are lucky, you fall in love with somebody who loves you back. After going out for some time, people who are in love start thinking about getting married and having a family. People usually think about marriage if they feel that they want to spend the rest of their lives with their boyfriend or girlfriend, if they think they have found their soul mate in their partner. It is more typical for the man to propose to the woman. He pops the big question, asking her to be his wife. He gives the girl an engagement ring, which is traditionally a diamond ring. The couple gets engaged and starts planning their wedding date and ceremony.

In more conservative and traditional families it is customary to ask a woman’s father for her hand in marriage before the proposal. You have to sit down and have a long talk with your future bride’s father and explain why you wish to marry his daughter, how you are planning to provide for her and your future family. You promise to take care of her. In some cultures marriages are pre-arranged and the bride and the groom don’t even know or love each other. The groom’s family pays a bride price and the bride’s family gives money, goods or estate to the marriage. This is called dowry.

In more modern cultures the couple chooses each other and ties the knot because they are in love. However, they still ask for their parents’ blessing. There is no dowry and bride price, but in some cases there are prenuptial agreements. Many people think that there is no need for these agreements if you really love each other, but they can come in handy if the marriage ends in divorce and one of the spouses has a bigger wealth than the other.

Many of the traditional Christmas customs originate in pagan festivals. Thousands of years ago people were often afraid of the long, cold winter nights. When the days finally became longer, people celebrated the return of the sun by making bonfires, feasting on large meals and exchanging gifts. After the birth of Christ, many of these traditions were combined with the celebration of Christmas.

The word Christmas, itself, comes from the Old English name ‘Cristes Maesse’. The first recorded observance occurred in Rome in AD360, but it wasn’t until AD 440 that the Christian Church fixed a celebration date of 25 December.

Christmas in Britain

Most people are on holiday in the UK and stay at home with their families on Christmas day, the main day for Christmas celebrations in Britain, when the family members gather to have a Christmas dinner at midday. During the weeks before Christmas, people send cards and go to Carol services and put up Christmas decorations in their homes. There is one very British Christmas ritual, which is watching the Queen’s message on TV. The tradition began in 1932 when King George V read a special speech written by Rudyard Kipling. The broadcast was an enormous success. Queen Elizabeth II continued the tradition until her death. Every year she broadcasted her message on Christmas Day, and it was heard by millions of people all over the world. In England most people watched or listened to it after their Christmas Dinner! This year it is King Charles III to deliver the speech for the first time in history.

Pulling a Christmas cracker is also a popular British tradition. But what is a Christmas cracker? Christmas crackers are tubes made of brightly coloured paper. When pulled apart, it makes a pop sound. Crackers usually contain a small gift, a paper hat and a joke. Crackers are famous for their very bad jokes! The party hats look like crowns, similar to the ones worn by the Wise Men. There is normally a cracker next to each plate on the Christmas dinner table.

Christmas in the United States

Just like in the UK, Christmas in the USA is observed on the 25^th of December. Here the festive season begins on the fourth Thursday in November, just after the Thanksgiving holiday. Christmas Eve in the USA is not an official holiday, which means that most people have to work. However, many workplaces hold Christmas parties and celebrations. After dinner on Christmas Eve, children go to bed early but not before hanging up their stockings on the fireplace or the end of their bed to be filled with gifts by Santa Claus. On the following morning, children wake up to look for their presents in their stockings and under the Christmas tree.

Boxing Day

Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It is also a holiday in many other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. It is based on a long custom of giving gifts to poor people. It is usually celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day. In some countries the public holiday is moved to the next weekday if 26 December is a Saturday or Sunday. Boxing Day is an old custom going back to the Middle Ages.

Christmas in Hungary

In Hungary the Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve. In addition to the usual decorations, Hungarians also put fondant candies on and under the tree. According to the Hungarian tradition, the Christmas presents are brought by baby Jesus, although some families (who belong to other religions or atheists) follow the Santa Claus tradition, which was promoted also by the communist government that ruled until 1990. Typical Hungarian Christmas dishes include: fish soup or bouillon, stuffed cabbage, roast turkey with stuffing, and the famous poppy seed or walnut rolls, which is a traditional Hungarian pastry, mostly eaten during the winter holidays. It is basically a kind of sweet bread, known as ‘beigli’ in Hungary. During the last few decades other variants (such as chestnut, plum jam, prune, or even cocoa) have become popular, too.

Health Focus – Salt

A recent study shows that countries around the world have well over the recommended amount of salt in their diets. The highest is China consuming over double the recommended amount.  High sodium (salt) levels in the body can result in serious health issues including stroke and heart attacks; kidney function problems; obesity; and bone problems.

Salt and nutrition

Sodium, known as salt, is not bad for us in small amounts, it is a necessary nutrient for good health as it is one of the body’s electrolytes. Most sodium is in the blood and the fluid around cells, where it helps keep fluids balanced. Sodium is also important for normal nerve and muscle function. The kidneys help regulate sodium levels by adjusting the amount that is excreted. Sodium is also lost through sweating but deficiencies are very rare. High sodium results in raised blood pressure, which can cause damage to blood vessels and arteries. This increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease.

Salt intake around the world

The graph shown – source Monique Tan et al. Queen Mary University of London – is from a recent study on salt intake around the world published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. It shows the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended daily amount of salt as 5.0 grams – and that one teaspoon of salt is 5.7 grams.

In the study China is identified as among the highest salt consumers in the world and cardiovascular disease accounts for 40% of deaths.  The study found that Chinese children eat the maximum amount of salt recommended for adults.  They found that salt intake has been consistently high over the past four decades. This may be due to an increase of foods and food from street markets, restaurants and fast-food chains.

All the countries researched have levels above the recommended daily limit. Montenegro and Portugal have salt averages more than twice the WHO limit. America, India and Australia are at 9 grams, while New Zealand, Canada and England are also above the 8-gram mark.

Making changes

With these statistics it’s important to consider ways to reduce salt intake. These may include:

• Checking nutritional information on food labels and choosing low-salt options
• Adding less salt when cooking
• Not adding salt to food at the table
• Flavouring food with pepper, herbs, garlic, spices instead
• Reducing the use of cooking sauces and seasonings like soy sauce
• Swapping salty snacks such as crisps with fruit and vegetables
• Avoiding salty foods such as bacon, cheese, takeaways, and ready meals
• Never adding salt to children’s food from the start.

Summary

Salt it is found in nearly everything we eat and occurs naturally in many foods. The recommended maximum is no more than a teaspoon of salt but it is also added to processed foods and is used to add flavour to our foods at the table. Doing so will increase levels way beyond the recommended amount. If we can cut out adding salt to dishes and reducing processed foods this will be a huge step in the right direction.

Domenico Dolce was born in Polizzi Generosa (near Palermo, Sicily) on 13 September 1958. His family owned a small clothing business, where Domenico worked from childhood. Stefano Gabbana was born in Milan on 14 November 1962. He studied graphics but soon turned to fashion. The turning point in their international success began with their friendship with Madonna. The pop star ordered from their New York showroom a guêpière (corset) made of gemstones and a jacket to wear at Cannes to launch her film ‘Truth or Dare: In Bed with Madonna’ by Alek Keshishian (1990). Madonna’s participation in the 1992 D&G party and runway show publicized their friendship. Shortly after, the singer asked them to design the fifteen hundred costumes for her 1993 “Girlie Show” tour.
In 1994, for example, after producing corsets, girdles, T-shirts, and styles emphasizing breasts and revealing cleavage, Dolce & Gabbana introduced a “Sapphic chic” masculine style for women characterized by short hair slicked down with brilliantine, which was exemplified by one of their earliest fans, Isabella Rossellini. The two designers have the ability of being able to mix periods and countries, masculine and feminine looks, fabrics and styles.

In 1986 Jimmy Choo, a Malaysian-born cobbler, opens a made-to-order shoe boutique in London’s East End for private clients, including Princess Diana.
In 1996 with a £150,000 loan (or $365,000 today) from her father, former British Vogue accessories editor Tamara Mellon and Choo launch Jimmy Choo Ltd.
In 1997 Jimmy Choo opens its first boutique on London’s Motcomb Street. That same year, Diana is photographed on the red carpet wearing Jimmy Choo slingbacks. In 1998, the first U.S. store opens in New York, where the shoes start at about $300 a pair.
In 2000 In Season 3 of Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw has a Cinderella moment while running for the Staten Island Ferry and exclaims, “I lost my Choo!”
In 2009, at her husband’s first inaugural ball, Michelle Obama steps out in Jimmy Choo heels—now on display at the Smithsonian.

Manolo Blahnik – shoes

If you were regularly watching ‘Sex In The City ‘during its original run, you might have noticed the main character Carrie Bradshaw’s particular love for Manolo Blahnik high heel shoes.  It was arguably a great free plugging of Manolo Blahnik shoes from the long-running TV show.

Manuel Blahnik Rodriguez was born in Santa Cruz de la Palma, (Canary Islands) Spain, on November 27, 1942. He moved to London in the late 1960s and worked at a fashion boutique named Zapata. This was located on the city’s Old Church Street.

In 1969, Blahnik started working in NYC with the store Zapata. The designer first began to make men’s shoes, but eventually found the designing styles too limiting for his comparatively adventurous taste and imagination. Blahnik’s break came in 1972 when the English designer Ossie Clark invited him to create shoes for his upcoming fashion show. However, Blahnik wasn’t too keen on the wedge-like designs so he turned his focus onto making stilettos. His shoes stood out from the rest, and stilettos have become Blahnik’s permanent design ever since.

He has shops all over the world but his headquarters remain on Old Church Street in London.

His high heels found high-profile fans in Madonna, Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, Kristen Stewart (as her Twilight character Bella Swan wore a pair of Blahniks at her wedding) and Sarah Jessica Parker. Hollywood’s A-listers continue to love his shoes because his name is still synonymous with quality, originality, and elegance.

Rodriguez was born in 1961, in Newark, New Jersey, to immigrant parents from Cuba. Rodriguez believes his career inspiration have been the Latina females around him: his mother, aunts and extended family. Although the women didn’t have the know-how of luxurious fashion, they had an amazing style and looked naturally beautiful at any age.
His first triumph was the bias-cut wedding dress he designed for close friend and co-worker Carolyn Bessette, when she married the late John F. Kennedy Jr. The dress has become iconic, and has drawn international attention. Fashion designer Coco Chanel is famous for her timeless designs, trademark suits and little black dresses.
Coco Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. At age 12, after her mother’s death, Chanel was was raised by nuns who taught her how to sew. She had had a brief career as a singer before she opened her first clothes shop in 1910.
In the 1920s, Chanel took her thriving business to new heights. She launched her first perfume, Chanel No. 5, which was the first to feature a designer’s name. Perfume “is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory of fashion. . . . that heralds your arrival and prolongs your departure,” Chanel once explained.
In 1925, Chanel introduced the now legendary Chanel suit with collarless jacket and well-fitted skirt. Her designs were revolutionary for the time—borrowing elements of men’s wear and emphasizing comfort over the constraints of then-popular fashions. She helped women say goodbye to the days of corsets and other confining garments.

Another 1920s revolutionary design was Chanel’s little black dress. She took a color once associated with mourning and showed just how chic it could be for evening wear.
It was the outbreak of World War II that led her to close her business. She fired her workers and shut down her shops.
At the age of 70, in the early 1950s, Chanel made a triumphant return to the fashion world. She first received scathing reviews from critics, but her feminine and easy-fitting designs soon won over shoppers around the world.
She herself became a much revered style icon known for her simple yet sophisticated outfits paired with great accessories, such as several strands of pearls.
In January 10, 1971 Chanel died in her suite at the Hôtel Ritz in Paris at the age of 87.
Later moving onto the creative guidance of Karl Lagerfeld in 1983, an extraordinary designer who demonstrated how to make the stylistic codes of the fashion house contemporary without ever betraying Gabrielle Chanel’s vision.

There is probably only one food more Hungarian than ‘rakott krumpli’ (potato casserole), goulash soup.

Although there is no evidence that potato casserole has such an ancient origin as curd dumplings, as the oldest recipe mentioning it is from 1865, it is certainly not imported by other nations. At the same time, the first recipe, to put it mildly, approached this food from a rather different direction than we do now, because it somehow sounded like this:

“Boil the potatoes, peel it and cut into slices. Cook veal pieces until soft and chop them coarsely. Chop a little green parsley as well, a small head of red onion, and five washed and dehulled anchovies. Melt a piece of butter, add all the above-mentioned ingredients, add a little salt and steam the mix well. Put a few spoons of sour cream and a few pieces of butter on a plate, a row of potatoes and salt it. Then pour sour cream and butter on it again, then the veal, and sour cream again. Then layer potatoes again until you put everything on the plate. Top with butter and sour cream, and decorate it with chopped anchovies and fry it until it turns golden.”

This original recipe featuring veal and anchovies is far from today’s sausage-egg version, but this may prove that it wasn’t inspired by the French tartiflette. In terms of its origin, gastro-historians think it first appeared around the areas of Debrecen and Szeged.

Potato Casserole

-ingredients-

– 600 g potatoes

– 5 eggs

– 200 g of sausage

– half dl fat (or oil)

– salt

– 330 g sour cream

Cook the potatoes and eggs in their shells, then peel and cut into circles. Also cut the sausages and fry them a little in their own fat. The fat of the sausages can be used later for layering. Then start layering the ingredients in a baking dish. First a little fat, then potatoes, eggs, sausages, fat again, and sour cream. You can salt the layers a bit, and even sprinkle pepper on them to taste. When the ingredients run out, cover the top of the last layer with sour cream and bake the potato casserole for approximately an hour in an oven preheated to 200 degrees, or until the top layer turns golden brown.

Hello, there, I’m Chief Yeoman Warder Pete McGowran from her Majesty’s Palace and Fortress of Tower of London. I look after another thirty-six Yeoman Warders and we are classed as a Body of Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London. I’m presently in the Byward North Office which dates back to around 1280 talking to you guys out there.

How did you become a Yeoman Warder?

I was on holiday in London when my wife thought it would be a good idea if I looked at this job. I never ever envisaged myself being a Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London. I was living overseas at the time. My wife said: ’You’re good at telling stories’ – I didn’t know how to take that. However, I did apply for the job. To be a Yeoman Warder- nicknamed Beefeater – you must have spent over twenty-two years in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. I spent over twenty-five years in the Royal Air Force. You must have had a rank of sergeant major and you must have been awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. So I applied for the job and within six weeks I was having an interview at the Tower of London and eventually got the job. It was never in my dreams to do this job but as time went on I suddenly realised that maybe I could do this.

What is a life of a Yeoman Warder like?

If you become a Yeoman Warder at the Tower, you’re signing up to live with your family at the Tower of London, there’s no retirement age for a Yeoman Warder so you’re here as long as you’re fit enough to do the job. So this is where my family lives. It’s not a bad postcode but it’s hard to get a pizza to the front gate sometimes!

Just behind me there is Mint Street. That’s where coins of the realm were made and produced until 1810.  It’s now where the Yeoman Warders live, all the way around the palace. The houses are called casemates. There are thirty-seven Yeoman Warders with their families that live at the Tower of London. There are about forty-five in total because we have a doctor and a priest. We have our general and Keeper of the Crown Jewels, and the Governor and the Deputy Governor. So forty-five families in total living within the walls of the Tower of London. Very busy place!

You’ll see me walking past the houses here. These houses are the Tower Green’s other homes where the Yeoman Warders live within the Tower. And because we’re in the lockdown, you’ll see that one of the cars is outside as well, very very rarely you’ll see a car inside the Tower of London, in the Inner Ward there is.

What has lockdown in the Tower been like?

A lot of people are keeping very fit. We have a moat here that goes around the Tower and a lot of people run around the moat. We have a gymnasium and a gym out on the wharf as well. So a lot of guys take part in that. I think most of us have dogs in the Tower and we take our dogs for a walk. So we’re all doing a lot more fitness than we would do if we had the visitors here in the Tower of London. We’re obviously on lockdown but we keep the place as pristine as we can. There’s one of the Yeoman Warders, actually watering the grass so we don’t only sweep the leaves up and empty the bins and check all the square, preparing for our visitors. You’ll see an Yeoman Warder even watering the grass there. Well done!

What’s your most memorable moment as a Yeoman Warder?

Probably 2014 when Her Majesty came to the Tower of London to rededicate the chapel of St Peter and plant ceramic poppies in the moat because we were commemorating the beginning of the First World War.

Where is your favourite place in the Tower of London?

I love the Chapel of Royal of St Peter ad Vincula, Latin for St Peter in chains. That chapel is five hundred years old this year, built on the orders of Henry VIII. Beautiful chapel, he built it for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. She didn’t like the other church that stood there as it got severely damaged by fire. So Henry built that chapel there. Beautiful chapel because two of my three children were married in there! I worked there for many years as the Chapel Clerk.

What are most people surprised to learn about Yeoman Warders?

They find it hard to realise that when they go home at night we carry on. We’ve even got our own pub in the Tower of London. Not as many as there used to be in medieval times. There used to be quite a lot of pubs in here. It was better to drink beer than water in those days!

We have our own life within the Tower. I think if anything shocks people it’s usually that one.

What do you do on your days off?

I’m a great theatre-goer and I love musicals. I love concerts. I’m just a mad music fan. And because we’ve got the boat and the pier outside the Tower, I’ll jump on the boat and go down to The O2 and see a concert. I’m not always going to be at the Tower of London whilst I’m here it’s a great place for entertainment. I’ve been around the world from my forces background but I’ve never been in such a vibrant city so I’m making good use of it while I’m here.

A passion for music.. What genre is your favourite?

I love soul and Motown music. I was brought up on that being a Birmingham boy from Warwickshire. I love all sorts of music to be honest but that’s probably my favourite. I was one of the first to get in and see the Motown Story in town. There’re some great shows, that’s my style of music.

Do you ever play music in the Tower?

Yes, I’m well known for blasting out music. Every now and then I’ll even put it on in the office.

What is your favourite music spot in London?

I’m a frequent visitor to the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, I love it on a Friday night. You can go upstairs and dance and all sorts. Ronnie Scott’s is the place to go. Just go early and go to the left-hand door. Tell them the Chief sent you!

What does being a Londoner mean to you?

You become a Londoner very quickly because you become very proud of the city and what it’s got to offer. It’s an ancient city. It’s one of the most historic places in the world where a lot has happened in society to map out what we do now. So I’m very proud of living here. I’m very proud of the city. It’s probably my most favourite city in the world. It’s an honour to be able to be here and be part of the buzz of the place. It has a hell of a buzz. I’m a Londoner and until we meet again in London…Take care.
