2. The Historic Village of Hollókő and Its Surroundings

This is just how Britain’s traditional Sunday roast is supposed to look. What makes it so dear to British hearts?

It’s about wholesomeness, I think.

Having fun with your friends, your family. I can never finish a roast.

It’s not just about the roast, the side dishes are what make this a feast. So, what is the best part of it?

For me, it’s the Yorkshire pudding, because my dad used to make it at home. It’s a good reminder of my childhood as a kid.

The potatoes.

I hate running out of gravy.

Many pubs and restaurants around Britain serve a Sunday roast. In fact, it’s the only item on the menu of the Clapton Country Club in London. Up to 300 portions are dished up here every Sunday.

In London in particular, you get a lot of people that move from outside of London, whether it’s from abroad, whether it’s from other areas in Britain, and so they may not be going back to their mothers or grandmothers for Sunday dinner, so they will go out, so there is a big culture of that happening.

This beloved roast is one of beef. Here’s how to make a tasty one. First, the meat has to be marinated in rosemary, thyme, and garlic. Now I’m going to roll the beef to keep the shape of the beef so that it doesn’t shrink and it doesn’t go explode on one side.

The meat is seared for 10 minutes on each side and then roasted at 125 degrees Celsius for another 45 minutes.

Perhaps the most British part of the Sunday roast is actually the Yorkshire pudding. Everybody has a different recipe and method, the same amount of milk, same amount of whole eggs, and same amount of plain flour, and just mix it in.

But how does the Yorkshire pudding get its shape? The trick is lots of hot grease in the baking dish. That puffs up the batter. That goes for 20 minutes for 170 degrees.

Yorkshire pudding is rather heavy. That used to be a way of avoiding too much expensive meat on the table.

What does it taste like? A little bit stodgy, a bit doughy, and if you get it just right, the perfect level of crisp.

Basically tastes like a fried bread. It doesn’t taste like anything specifically. Almost like a crispy savory pancake, but bigger and fluffier.

Along with cabbage and various other root vegetables, the marinated and oven-baked potatoes are critical to the Sunday roast experience. You can never go wrong with crispy potatoes. Soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. You can’t beat potatoes, roast potatoes, you know.

When and where did the history of the Sunday roast begin?

Roast beef became popular in England under Henry VII during the 15th century. The king provided the yeoman guards at the Tower of London with weekly rations of beef, which gave rise to the nickname beef eaters.

That it became a dish eaten on Sundays has to do with the church. You go to the church on the Sunday morning and then you come back and it was almost like a family get-together, certainly to begin with, socializing after going to church.

For those who love the Sunday roast but don’t eat meat, vegetarian and even vegan options are available, the nut roast for instance, or the vegan strudel beef Wellington style.

Inside we got a mix of truffle, wild mushroom, leek, carrots, onion, we cooked with thyme and rosemary and garlic, and we got a vegan cheese and vegan breadcrumb to bind it, and we cooked it, and we wrap it and we roll it with the pancake and a puff pastry.

Meat or no, one question remains, can a Sunday roast be served up on any other day of the week? I don’t really think you can have a Sunday roast any other day, part of the reason is you have the time on a Sunday.

Absolutely not, that is, no, a Sunday roast has got to be on a Sunday, otherwise it’s not a Sunday roast.

14. He went for a ride in a stolen T-model Ford (József Galamb 1908) first and then in a diesel engine BMW (Ferenc Anisits 1983).

15. His next choice of car was a Chevrolet with an automatic transmission shift (László József Bíró 1932) and then a Volkswagen Beetle (partly designed by Béla Barényi 1925).

16. Then he changed for a bike and turned on the dynamo (Ányos Jedlik 1861) to use the lights on the bicycle.

17. The police caught him at last and he was transported by a helicopter (Oszkár Asbóth 1928).

18. On board the helicopter he checked his list and he was sorry that he couldn’t meet a Pulitzer Prize (József Pulitzer 1917) winning journalist that day.

19. Another thing missing from his day was some light transmitting concrete (Áron Losonczi 2001).

20. But he took a chance and as a last achievement he started solmization, a method of the world-famous music teaching technique, the Kodály method (Zoltán Kodály, 1929).

You’re on the tips of the wings. Traveling by plane takes you on a journey. Because they get you from place to place a lot faster than a car does. For five-year-old William Hines, I love flying. It’s a mode of transportation that hits home. I don’t have to walk 7,000 miles.

William is a pre-kindergarten student at Campbell Early Learning Center with a passion for flight. That shows them how many degrees the engine is. He’s very mechanically inclined. So, I suppose it was a natural progression to want to know about more fascinating things.

Amber Hines is William’s mom. She says his passion took off thanks to a connection with a Southwest Airlines pilot who brought William a company training manual and sat with him for two hours going over the charts and just talking shop with him. But William noticed something was a little off.

I discovered that two train monitors did not match. They did not match at all. That is closer up and that’s further up. I had no idea that one of our friends had started a job with Southwest Airlines, but she said, “Can I pass these along to my manager?” And I said, “You know, sure, that’s fine.”

That’s when the CEO of the Airlines found out, then invited William and his family to Dallas for a VIP tour. So, we went down to headquarters. It was amazing. Everyone there was very, very welcoming and, um, we definitely had the tour of a lifetime.

I got to go in a simulator and the simulator pilot was crashing. showing how close. It’s an experience this family will always remember. That heats up the cockpit. Because of William’s attention to detail, that might land him in a career he already loves.

According to Atlas Obscura, the tiny apartment was perched 1000 feet in the air, providing Eiffel with a bird’s-eye view of 1890s-era Paris. He furnished the lofty abode with wallpaper, cabinets, furniture, oil paintings, and a grand piano. There was also a small adjacent room with laboratory equipment, which allowed Eiffel to conduct meteorological observations, The Independent writes.

While many elite members of the public clamored to rent the space, Eiffel shunned their exorbitant offers. Instead, he used it to greet illustrious guests like Thomas Edison (who gave him a phonograph machine as a gift), or as a quiet space for solitary reflection.

Author Jill Jonnes provides a great visual image of what an evening was like in Eiffel’s private apartment in her 2010 book Eiffel’s Tower: The Thrilling Story Behind Paris’s Beloved Monument and the Extraordinary World’s Fair That Introduced It. She describes one evening that Edison and other luminaries spent in Eiffel’s aerie:

“The guests settled in on the dark velvet settees trimmed in fringe. The walls, a warm yellow, were already covered with framed artistic mementos: photographs, drawings, paintings. “Eiffel has a piano there,” said Edison. “Gounoud, the composer of ‘Faust,’ played and sang, and he did it splendidly, too, despite his more than eighty years.” High above Paris, Gounoud’s music wafted forth as the guests smoked cigars, drank brandy, talked, and even sang, a magical late-summer interlude. Working quietly in the background was American artist A.A. Anderson, best known for his oil portraits, but invited by Eiffel to try to capture Edison’s likeness as best he could in a sculpted bust that would commemorate this occasion of genius honoring genius.”

The apartment was closed to the public for years, but in May 2015, Condé Nast Traveler announced that it would open to visitors. You can’t stay overnight, but you can peer into the space – which contains its original furnishings, along with life-size mannequins of Eiffel and Edison—and admire the private hideaway of the famous French civil engineer and architect.

The history of wine and winemaking

Wine has been part of human culture for thousands of years. From ancient rituals to modern celebrations, wine has played a central role in societies across the globe. The history of winemaking is not just about agriculture – it’s a story of innovation, trade, religion, and art.

Ancient Beginnings

The earliest evidence of winemaking dates back to around 6,000 BC, in the region that is now Georgia, in the Caucasus. Archaeologists discovered clay jars containing traces of wine, suggesting that people were already fermenting grapes thousands of years ago. Similar discoveries have been made in Iran and Armenia, showing that winemaking spread across the ancient world.

In ancient Egypt, wine was considered a luxury item. It was often reserved for the wealthy and used in religious ceremonies. Tomb paintings show scenes of grape harvesting and wine production, indicating its importance in Egyptian society.

The Greeks and Romans took winemaking to new levels. The Greeks believed wine was a gift from the gods, especially Dionysus, the god of wine and pleasure. They developed techniques for pruning vines and storing wine in amphorae – large clay containers. The Romans improved these methods, introducing wooden barrels and glass bottles. They also spread viticulture (the cultivation of grapevines) throughout their empire, including into France, Spain, and Germany.

Medieval Times

During the Middle Ages, winemaking continued to evolve. Monasteries played a key role in preserving and improving winemaking techniques. Monks in France, Italy, and Germany carefully studied soil, climate, and grape varieties to produce better wine. They kept detailed records and passed down their knowledge through generations.

Wine was also important in Christian religious practices. It was used in the Eucharist, a central part of Catholic worship. This religious significance helped maintain wine production even during times of war and economic hardship.

Trade routes expanded during this period, allowing wine to be transported across Europe. However, wine quality varied greatly, and preservation was a challenge. Without modern technology, wine often spoiled quickly, so people added spices or herbs to improve the taste.

The Age of Exploration and Innovation

What about the traditional Hungarian breakfast?

In Hungary, people usually have a large breakfast. Hungarian breakfast generally is an open sandwich with fresh bread or a toast, butter, cheese or different cream cheeses, túró cheese or körözött (Liptauer cheese spread), cold cuts such as ham, véres hurka (similar to black pudding), liver pâté (called májkrém or kenőmájas), bacon, salami, beef tongue, mortadella, disznósajt (head cheese), sausages such as kabanos, beerwurst or different Hungarian sausages or kolbász. Even eggs, (fried, scrambled or boiled), French toast called bundáskenyér and vegetables (including peppers, bell peppers, tomatoes, radish and cucumber) are part of the Hungarian breakfast. Sometimes breakfast is a cup of milk, tea or coffee with pastries, a bun, a kifli or a strudel with jam or honey, or cereal, such as muesli and perhaps fruit. Children can have rice pudding (tejberizs) or Semolina Cream (tejbegríz) for breakfast topped with cocoa powder and sugar or with fruit syrup. Hot drinks are preferred for breakfast.

What do you usually eat for breakfast?

Let’s go back in time a bit and recall some of our greatest childhood memories with Hungarian cartoons.

1. THE TALES OF POM POM

The sweet Hungarian cartoon, directed by Attila Dargay and written by István Csukás and Ferenc Sajdik, is composed of 2 series released in 1978 and 1981. The cartoon follows the adventures of Pom Pom, a wig-like character, and Picur, a schoolgirl. On her way to school, each morning, Picur meets Pom Pom who entertains the girl with interesting stories about various creatures, like Arthur Dumpling (Gombóc Artúr).

2. FRAKK, THE TERROR OF CATS

This Hungarian cartoon of great success was made by Ágnes Bálint and was first broadcast in 1971. The central character of the television show is Frakk, the lovable dog of Uncle Charles (Károly bácsi) and Aunt Irma (Irma néni) who also have a black and a white cat, Lucretia (Lukrécia) and Serena (Szerénke). The three pets constantly get into a fight with one another, and while Aunt Irma stands by the cats, Uncle Charles always favours Frakk.

3. SÜSÜ, THE DRAGON

The beloved puppet show was on television between 1977 and 1984 and was made by the Hungarian Television (MTV). Written by István Csukás and directed by Attila Szabó, the story of the little green dragon was a huge success. In contrast to other dragons, Süsü has only one head, and he is a soft–hearted creature who, because of curing his enemy, is disinherited. Forced to live among humans, he befriends a young prince who unlike other people, is not afraid of the dragon. The cartoon follows the adventures of the two protagonists as they try to get into the palace to propose to the princess.

4. THE GREAT ANGLER (A NAGY HO-HO-HO HORGÁSZ)

Another successful cartoon written by István Csukás and Ferenc Sajdik is the story of The Great Angler that is composed of 2 series. First appearing in 1982, then in 1988, the story about the much-devoted angler and his friend, the Főkukac, who is, in fact, a giant worm, exemplifies that no obstacle can stand in the way of dedicated individuals. Be it summer or even cold winter, the protagonist tries to catch fish in an aquarium, from the top of a roof or even from the bathtub.  

5. THE MÉZGA FAMILY

Being one of the most popular Hungarian cartoons in the ’60s, the ’70s and the ’80s it was not surprising that the series was broadcast again in 2004. It was written by József Romhányi and József Nepp, the latter also being the director of it with Béla Ternovszky. The story was also successful in Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, France and in other countries besides Hungary. As for the family members, Géza and Paula are the parents, while Aladár (12) and Kriszta, a teenage girl, are their children. Aladár likes fiddling with all kinds of technological gadgets that can make space voyages possible. However, due to the inability of his family to properly use these objects, they always get into trouble and without surprise, it is Aladár who has to rescue the family with his loyal friend, Blöki, the dog.

6. NEXT, PLEASE!

The famous short cartoon of Dr. Bubó, made by the Pannónia Film Studio, is composed of 3 series aired between 1975 and 1986. The story is about an owl, called Dr. Bubó, who has a consulting room in a lair where he treats the patients of the forest with Ursula, his loyal assistant. His patients usually suffer from psychological problems, but the diagnosis of the doctor is mostly way off that composes the central humour of the story.

It is sometimes good to go back in time, and watching these cartoons, we can recall some great childhood memories that we cherish. Hopefully, other legendary Hungarian cartoons are going to be produced soon, so that future generations can also be raised up watching films that will provide lifelong memories to them.

It can be hard when a summer vacation ends, but it can be especially disappointing when the tan from your vacation begins to fade, as well, often mere days after you get back home.

Thankfully, there are ways you can make your tan stay on for longer. These tips below work for real tans, as well as for fake ones.

Start before you get your tan

Your work making a long-lasting tan happen, starts well before you actually get the tan. It’s a good idea to begin by exfoliating and moisturizing your whole body each day, starting a week before your trip. A gentle exfoliating wash (nothing with microbeads or anything abrasive) helps make sure that dead skin cells are out of the way, so that the sun can get directly to work on your skin and produce a tan that’s as deep as possible (real tans run much deeper than fake tans).

Lotions with body butters and hyaluronic acid can be especially effective moisturizers. Skin with a healthy level of moisture doesn’t peel. This makes sure that your tan stays on for as long as possible.

You might be tempted to try one of the unproven speed-tan supplements and lotions that litter out-of-the-way stores on the internet. However, these aren’t proven to work, at all, and can actually speed things up unevenly. If you want to make your skin more receptive to tanning, you could try an omega-3-enriched skin lotion, instead.

Take care of your skin after each day out in the sun

You don’t want to overexpose yourself to the sun or get out there without strong SPF. If you burn yourself, you’ll need to deal with peeling skin, which takes away your tan.

Once your vacation begins, it’s a good idea to moisturize your skin after you get out of the sun each day. An after-sun lotion could help. Once you get back to your air-conditioned hotel room, it could feel overly cold after the heat of the sun, making you want to turn up the hot water in the shower. It’s important, again, to think of your skin’s hydration, however. Hot water can strip off all the natural oils that you’ve worked hard to put in your skin. You want to bathe or shower in water that’s as close to room temperature as you can manage. It could even help to use moisturizing shower gel.

Add moisture from the inside

Moisturizing your skin is important to retaining your tan, but giving your skin a supply of water is important, as well. To keep your skin well-nourished with moisture, you need to make sure that you drink 2 liters of water each day.

Finally, even as your tan begins to fade over time, you can make it appear more intense by gently exfoliating. Getting rid of the dead cells that cover your skin and dull your tan, can only help your tan shine through better. You could also consider topping up with a fake tan. This could be especially useful, considering that natural tans tend to fade unevenly.
