5 Perc Angol: Az iskola 2002 óta működik, mi is közel két évtizede ismerjük egymást. Szerinted mi a hosszú távú sikeretek titka?

Karl Sammut: A Gateway sikerének oroszlánrésze a tanári csapatnak köszönhető. A GSE mindig is nagyon erős tanári gárdával rendelkezett, akik szenvedéllyel tanították az angolt, és örömmel figyelték, ahogy a diákok napról napra fejlődnek. Karl Sammut: A magyar diákok manapság általában magasabb szintűek, így elvárásaik is rendszerint magasabbak. Iskolánkban minden szint egész évben garantált: közép-, felsőközép- és haladó csoportok folyamatosan rendelkezésre állnak, sőt minden szintből több csoport is fut egyszerre, hiszen a GSE-n egész évben legalább 200 diák tanul. A magyar hallgatók teljes körű nyelvi elmélyülésre, mediterrán életstílus megtapasztalására vágynak, és elvárják, hogy mind az osztályteremben, mind a szabad programokon változatos nemzetiségű társakkal találkozzanak.

5 Perc Angol: Sok magyar diák számára ez lehet az első alkalom, hogy egyedül utazik külfldre egy nyelvtanfolyamra. Milyen támogatást nyújtotok azoknak, akik kevésbé magabiztosak, vagy még sohasem vettek részt hasonló programon?

Karl Sammut: Az első hétfőn tartott üdvözlő tájékoztató, amely az iskolában zajlik, kitűnő lehetőséget kínál azoknak, akik először vesznek részt külföldi angol nyelvtanfolyamon: megismerkedhetnek a többi diákkal, és már az első napon otthonosan érezhetik magukat. Ahogy korábban is említettem, tanáraink nemcsak mentorok, de barátok is egyben: rendszeresen javasolnak látnivalókat, programokat és különleges máltai eseményeket. Az is sokat segít, hogy a GSE-n minden héten rengeteg diák érkezik a világ minden tájáról, az újonnan érkezők számára így könnyű barátságokat kötni az első néhány napban, és valódi otthon az otthontól légkör alakul ki az iskolában.

5 Perc Angol: A diákok gyakran emelik ki tanáraitok profizmusát és a barátságos légkört. Hogyan biztosítjátok, hogy az órák egyszerre legyenek hatékonyak és élvezetesek?

Karl Sammut: Az óráinkat a tanáraink teszik élvezetessé és hatékonnyá! Ahogy korábban is említettem, tanáraink elhivatott szakemberek, akik érdekes, a tankönyv anyagán túlmutató órákat tartanak. Minden nap új, izgalmas témákat hoznak, és a tankönyv mellett digitális anyagokat is használnak, hogy még dinamikusabb legyen a tanulás. Minden tanteremben interaktív tábla és modern technológia áll rendelkezésre, így könnyen hozzáférhetőek az online anyagok is. Az órákon gyakran vannak egyéni vagy csoportos prezentációk, amelyek sok diák-diák interakciót is biztosítanak.

5 Perc Angol: A weboldalatokról látható, hogy minden korosztálynak kínáltok tanfolyamokat: felnőtteknek, tizenéveseknek, családoknak, sőt 50 év felettieknek is. Hogyan igazítjátok a tanítási módszereiteket ilyen sokéle csoport igényeihez?

Karl Sammut: A kommunikatív nyelvoktatási módszert alkalmazzzuk, amelynek lényege a készségek: hallás utáni értés, olvasás, írás és beszéd – kiegyensúlyozott fejlesztése, miközben a tanár folyamatosan beépíti a grammatikát, a kiejtést és a szókincset is. Minden óra egy-egy témára épül, így a tanár a korosztályhoz igazíthatja a témákat: a módszer egységes marad, de a tartalom az egyes csoportok életkorához és érdeklődéséhez igazodik.

5 Perc Angol: Melyik korosztály képviselik a diákok legnagyobb arányát?

Karl Sammut: A 18 év feletti felnőttek egyértelműen a legtöbb hallgatót adják, és egész évben folyamatosan jelen vannak. Emellett fiataloknak szóló tanfolyamokat és tizenéves csoportokat is indítunk minden héten, egész éven át. Az 50 pluszos programokat évente négyszer szervezzük, de ez nem jelenti azt, hogy az 50 év feletti érdeklődőket nem fogadjuk be a normál, vegyes csoportokba. Véleményem szerint a legnépszerűbb korosztály a 25 és 45 év közöttiek.

5 Perc Angol: A GSE nagy hangsúlyt fektet a nemzetközi közösségre és a kulturális beilleszkedésre. Hogyan ösztönzitek a diákokat arra, hogy az órákon kívül is angolul kommunikáljanak és kapcsolatokat építsenek?

Karl Sammut: Málta ma már nagyon nemzetközi és sokszínű ország, ahol a világ minden tájáról élnek és dolgoznak emberek. A GSE mindig is kiemelte a nemzetiségi keveredés fontosságát, és heti programokkal segíti a diákokat az ismerkedésben. A keddi welcome partik, a szerdai jóga órák, a csütörtöki focimeccsek és sok-sok más program mind ezt szolgálják. A GSE saját rezidenciája – amely mindössze 2 percre van az iskolától – szintén nemzetközi összetételű, így a diákok a konyhában, a szobákban vagy közös programokon is folyamatosan gyakorolhatják az angolt.

5 Perc Angol: Lehet-e vizsgát tenni az iskolában? Működötök vizsgaközpontkent is?

Karl Sammut: Vizsgaközpontkent nem működünk, ugyanakkor felkészítünk a legtöbb népszerű vizsgára. Ezek közé tartozik az IELTS, a Cambridge-vizsgák – például a PET, KET, FCE és CAE –, valamint olyan szakmai angol vizsgák, mint a jogi vagy a repülőipari angol minősítések.

5 Perc Angol: Mi a különbség a máltai angol és a brit, illetve az amerikai angol között?

Karl Sammut: Tulajdonképpen nem létezik olyan, hogy máltai angol. Mi brit angolt beszélünk, semleges akcentussal. Ez teszi a máltai nyelvtanulást különösen ideálissá, főként az alacsonyabb szintű diákok számára: az akcentus megfejtésével nem kell küzdeni, így könnyebben sajátítják el a nyelvet.

5 Perc Angol: Melyik időszakot ajánlod leginkább, és milyen tanácsot adnál az iskolaválasztáshoz?  

Karl Sammut: A megfelelő iskola kiválasztása attól függ, milyen típusú tanuló vagy, és milyen légkört keresel. Ha szeretsz sok nemzetiségű közösségben tanulni, új kultúrákat megismerni és az órákon kívül is angolul beszélni, akkor a GSE tökéletes választás. Fontos szempont a rugalmas órarend is, különösen azoknak, akik dolgozni szeretnének. Ha részmunkaidős állást vállalnál Máltán, érdemes olyan iskolát választani, amely alkalmazkodik a munkaidődhöz – a GSE ilyen. Természetesen a jó hírnév és a hivatalos engedélyek szintén fontosak: a GSE teljesen akkreditált, elismert európai oktatási intézmény.

5 Perc Angol: Ha meg kellene győznöd valakit, hogy az Egyesült Királyság helyett Máltát válassza angol nyelvtanfolyamra, mit mondanál?

Karl Sammut: Azt gondolom, ha valaki – akár a családjával – szeretné összekötni a tengerparti nyaralást a nyelvtanulással és nyelvgyakorlással, akkor Málta tökéletes választás. A mediterrán életstílus, a sziget hangulata, a tenger, a napsütés és a meleg klíma biztosítja a tökéletes nyaralás helyszínét, ugyanakkor az anyanyelvi környezetben való nyelvtanulás és nyelvgyakorlás lehetőségét is. 2025-ben pedig elindult a Ragusa Express, amely egy gyors katamarán járat Málta és Szicília között. He Is British, Mysterious and Has Outlasted 5 Prime Ministers: Meet ‘Hot Podium Guy.’

A sound engineer has emerged as an unexpected heartthrob amid Britain’s political tumult.

In England, over the last few years, when a lectern has appeared outside the black door of 10 Downing Street, the office and official residence of the prime minister in London, it has typically been an indicator of one of four things.

It could be that the prime minister is about to resign, call a general election or address the nation. Or it means the internet is likely to be reacquainted with the so-called hot podium guy, a dashing sound engineer who has been tasked with setting up the lectern and microphones for these momentous events. In Britain’s political merry-go-round of the last decade, the mysterious heartthrob has been a welcome distraction and an enduring presence.

He appeared again on Monday, when Keir Starmer resigned from his post. The man, Tobias Gough, a 42-year-old sound engineer with MGi London, first caught the public’s attention in 2019, while setting up the lectern when Theresa May, then the prime minister, stepped down. Almost overnight, he became a social media sensation. Some pointed out his muscular arms, while others said, despite not hearing much from him, that they trusted him over May to successfully broker Brexit, Britain’s complicated exit from the European Union.

In the years since, prime ministers have come and gone, while Gough, in his uniform black T-shirt, has outlasted them all. Pictures and videos of him carrying the lectern and testing its microphones have become something of a harbinger of significant political news.

Users online have praised Gough for his reliability; some joke that he seems to be more consistent than the leaders of the country and has one of the most stable jobs in a sluggish economy.

Katie Glass, a columnist at The Times of London, called him “the one reliable man in politics” in a recent article, also describing him as a cross between “a choirboy and a Chippendale.”

During the BBC’s morning broadcast ahead of the resignation of Starmer on Monday, two of the network’s presenters, Jon Kay and Henry Zeffman, discussed Gough’s recurring appearances.

Gough did not respond to requests for comment, and the Downing Street press office declined to comment. But in 2019, in an interview with The Daily Mail, Gough expressed his bemusement about all of the attention and chalked the internet’s obsession up to “great lighting.”

The short answer is: there is no name for kovászos uborka in English. It is often translated as “sour pickles” or “fermented cucumbers”, but neither phrase captures the full picture.

So what exactly is it?

Kovászos uborka is a cucumber that has been naturally fermented – not preserved in vinegar like the pickles you find in a supermarket jar abroad. Fresh cucumbers are placed in a large glass jar with water, salt, garlic, and dill. A few slices of bread are added on top and at the bottom. Then the jar is left outside in the sun for two or three days.

That’s it. No cooking, no vinegar, no complicated equipment. The bread provides wild yeast and bacteria, which start the fermentation process. The result is a cucumber that is sour, garlicky, slightly fizzy, and extremely refreshing.

Is it similar to pickles?

Yes and no. Both are sour cucumbers, but the process and the taste are different. Commercial pickles use vinegar, which gives them a sharp, acidic flavour. Kovászos uborka gets its sourness from lactic acid fermentation, the same natural process used to make yoghurt or sauerkraut. The taste is gentler, fresher, and more complex.

When do Hungarians eat it?

Kovászos uborka is a summer food. You can only make it when it is warm enough outside, traditionally in July and August. Hungarians eat it as a side dish, a snack, or simply straight from the jar. It is also considered a good food for the stomach, since it is full of natural probiotics.

JAM

JAM: magyarul lekvár. A lekvárt bármilyen gyümölcsből lehet készíteni, állagra sima vagy enyhén darabos. Sűrű és jól kenhető.

MARMALADE: A marmalade kizárólag citrusfélékből készül, például narancsból vagy citromból. Jellegzetessége, hogy a gyümölcs héját is tartalmazza, ami enyhén keserű ízt ad neki. A héjdarabok jól láthatók benne, és ez adja a különleges állagát.

PERSERVE: magyarul befőtt, ami nem lekvár : )

Természetesen ez is egy olyan kifejezés, amit nem lehet szóról szóra lefordítani – nem is érdemes próbálkozni vele  Viszont kereshetünk hasonló kifejezéseket!

Ha valaki nagyon boldog, mondhatjuk, hogy:

to be over the moon – magyarul talán a fellegekben van lenne a legjobb kifejezés erre

to be thrilled to bits – ez is azt jelenti, hogy nagyon boldog, örül valaminek

to be stoked (about) something (amerikai) – nagyon izgatott (örömmel) valami miatt
to be chuffed to bits  (brit) – nagyon örül valaminek
to be jumping for joy – ugrál örömében

to be grinning from ear to ear – fülig ér a szája

… és talán, ami a legközelebb áll a majmos kifejezéshez:

He/She is like a kid in a candy store. – Olyan, mint egy kisgyerek az édességboltban (annyira örül).

Throughout his lifetime, Sir David Attenborough has done many different jobs. He was at the Royal Navy for two years and worked as a television presenter, director and narrator. During his career, he created many award-winning books and programs.

He is a Guinness World Record Holder
Sir David Attenborough owns two Guinness World Records. One of them for having the longest career as a TV presenter. The other one is for the longest career as a television naturalist.

He was knighted twice
David Attenborough became a Sir in 1985. Queen Elizabeth II knighted David for the services he has done to broadcasting. At the age of 94, he received his second knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2020. He was given this knighthood as a recognition of his contributions to television broadcasting and conservation.

Once he came face to face with Mountain Gorillas in Africa
In 1979 he was in Africa filming a documentary series called Life on Earth. In Rwanda, David Attenborough encountered a group of mountain gorillas. In natural documentary history, it was one of the most iconic scenes captured ever. The group of gorillas accepted Sir David as one of them and it ended up he was playing with baby gorillas.

He has been to the bottom of the Great Barrier Reef
After six decades from the very first scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, Sir David Attenborough returned to dive into the deep of the world’s biggest living structure. He used a new type of submarine to go 1,000 feet below the sea surface.

Anybody can tell by observing their furry friend that they have a much closer relationship to smell than we do. But just how much more refined is this ability? Dogs have 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, while humans possess a humbling 6 million. Their sense of smell is so refined that they can detect substances at the density of one drop of liquid distributed within 20 Olympic-size swimming pools. However, we win in the taste department, coming in at having a whopping 9,000 taste buds compared to our furry friends’ 1,700. 

2. Dogs Get Jealous – Even In Their Own Imagination

A study from the University of Auckland has recently revealed that not only do dogs get jealous of their owners, they even have the ability to get jealous in scenarios they imagine between their owner and another dog.

3. Dogs Can See (Some) Color

A commonly held belief among people today is that dogs can only see in shades of gray, but this is not the case. While dogs are unable to differentiate between shades of red and green, seeing both instead as shades of gray, they have the full ability to see shades of yellows and blues. It is actually recommended that you use a blue ball when playing in a grassy field with your canine companion to help them differentiate between the ball and the grass. 

4. Petting Dogs Lowers Your Blood Pressure

Recent studies published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine show that not only is petting a dog pleasant emotionally, but it also has positive physical effects. Participants in the study had decreased blood pressure and heart rates when interacting with dogs, especially when cuddling with and petting these furry fellows. Next time you feel that blood pressure rising, seek out your kind companion.

5. They Enjoy Music (Especially Classical)

Have you ever been listening to one of your favorite songs and stopped to wonder if little Fido was enjoying it, too? Well, now you can rest assured that he likely is. According to a study in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, dogs in a kennel environment who were played classical music showed decreased anxiety and increased relaxation. Further studies showed that dogs seem to prefer music that is between 50-60 BPM, so if you’re making the perfect playlist for your pup pal, stick to the slower songs.

6. They Can Navigate Subway Systems

Dogs in Moscow have been observed using the metro stations not just as shelter — but to navigate the city. Stray dogs will regularly take the subway to stops to find food, visit people, and sometimes just for fun. 

7. In Ancient Rome, Dogs Wore Armor

While now we dress our furry friends in sweaters and booties, in Ancient Rome, it was a different story. Roman War Dogs were often suited up in plate metal armor and spiked collars and sent to fight alongside their human compatriots. The use of war dogs was not exclusive to Rome — many ancient civilizations, such as Assyria, Greece, and Sumer, used hounds of war as well.

8. Dogs Are as Smart as a 2-Year-Old Child

While every breed of dog is different, studies have shown that overall, dogs possess roughly the same level of cognition as a 2-year-old child. Factors looked at while completing this study included spatial awareness, ability to understand language, and ability to understand basic math and numbers. Keep this in mind when interacting with your dog — they may know more than you think. 

9. The Oldest Dog Breed In The World Has Existed Since 329 B.C.

The oldest known breed of domesticated dog, the Saluki, has existed since at least 329 B.C., with evidence that it existed as long ago as 2100 B.C. Salukis were kept by nearly every civilization in the ancient Middle East, including Egypt, Persia, and many of the nomadic Arab groups. However, their introduction to the English-speaking world is rather recent, with the first Saluki being brought into England as recently as the 1840s.

With how commonly we see dogs on a day-to-day basis, it’s easy to forget how amazing and wonderful our furry friends really are. Next time you’re hanging out with your pet pup, think about his war dog ancestors and his cousin in Moscow riding the subway to visit with friends, and give him a proud pat on the back for the fantastic creature that he is.

10. Dogs Have a Sense of Time.

If you’re a dog owner, you probably noticed your canine friend starting to feel impatient when it’s getting close to their mealtime. Dogs have an internal mechanism, called circadian rhythm, that helps them tell the time; such that they know when they’re supposed to receive their food or when their owners are about to arrive home, even if their routine is disrupted.

Who Can Vote?

Every Hungarian citizen aged 18 or over has the right to vote in parliamentary elections. There are two main categories of voters:

• Residents in Hungary: They receive two votes.
• Hungarian citizens living abroad without a permanent Hungarian address: They receive one vote (for the party list only).

Minority voters may choose to vote for a national minority list instead of a party list.

How Many Seats Are There in Parliament?

Hungary’s National Assembly has 199 seats, unchanged since the 2012 reform:

• 106 constituency seats (single‑member districts)
• 93 list seats (party lists + minority lists)

Members of Parliament serve four‑year terms.

How Do the Two Votes Work?

1) Constituency Vote (106 seats)

Hungary is divided into 106 single‑member constituencies. Voters choose one candidate in their district. The candidate with the most votes wins – there is no second round.

2) Party List Vote (93 seats)

Voters also cast a vote for a party list (or a minority list). These votes determine how the 93 proportional seats are distributed.

To appear on the national list, a party must run candidates in at least 27 constituencies across 9 counties and Budapest.

Thresholds and Minority Lists

• The threshold for entering Parliament is 5% of the national party‑list vote.
• Joint lists have higher thresholds:
  • 10% for two‑party lists
  • 15% for lists of three or more parties
• Minority lists do not have a percentage threshold. Instead, they must reach a “preferential quota”, which is significantly lower than the standard threshold.

How Are List Seats Allocated?

Hungary uses a compensatory system. List seats are allocated based on:

• Party‑list votes
• “Fragment votes” from constituencies (votes cast for losing candidates + surplus votes of winning candidates)

This system tends to favour larger parties, especially those with strong constituency performance.

Although the legal framework is the same, several practical and political factors have changed by 2026:

• Constituency boundaries remain those introduced in 2012, but demographic shifts have made some districts significantly larger than others.
• Hungarians abroad now participate in much higher numbers, especially from neighbouring countries.
• The political environment has become more competitive in 2026, with new parties – most notably the Tisza Party – reshaping the landscape.
• EU‑related rule‑of‑law debates and frozen funds have increased international attention on the election.
• Campaigning is more digital, with social media playing a central role.

The electoral system itself, however, has not changed since 2014.
