Cat survives 52 days without food

The new owners of a house in the Netherlands had a shock this weekend when a very skinny cat appeared and ran out as they opened the front door of their home for the first time. International Women’s Day 2023: History, marches and celebrations

For more than a century people around the world have been marking 8^th March as a special day for women.

1. How did it start?

International Women’s Day, also known as IWD for short, grew out of the labour movement to become a recognised annual event by the United Nations (UN).

The seeds of it were planted in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. It was the Socialist Party of America who declared the first National Woman’s Day, a year later.

The idea to make the day international came from a woman called Clara Zetkin. She suggested the idea in 1910 at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. There were 100 women there, from 17 countries, and they agreed on her suggestion unanimously.

It was first celebrated in 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The centenary was celebrated in 2011, so this year we’re technically celebrating the 112th International Women’s Day.

Things were made official in 1975 when the United Nations started celebrating the day.

International Women’s Day has become a date to celebrate how far women have come in society, in politics and in economics, while the political roots of the day mean strikes and protests are organised to raise awareness of continued inequality.

2. When is IWD?

It’s on 8^th March.

It wasn’t formalised until a war-time strike in 1917 when Russian women demanded “bread and peace” – and four days into the women’s strike the Tsar was forced to abdicate and the provisional government granted women the right to vote.

The date when the women’s strike commenced on the Julian calendar, which was then in use in Russia, was Sunday 23^rd February. This day in the Gregorian calendar was 8^th March – and that’s when it’s celebrated today.

3. What colours symbolise International Women’s Day?

Purple, green and white are the colours of IWD according to the International Women’s Day website.

“Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolizes hope. White represents purity, albeit a controversial concept. The colours originated from the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908,” they say.

4. Is there an International Men’s Day?

There is indeed, on 19th November.

But it has only been marked since the 1990s and isn’t recognised by the UN. People celebrate it in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the UK.

The day celebrates “the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities”, highlighting positive role models and raising awareness of men’s well-being.

5. How is Women’s Day celebrated and will there be virtual events this year?

International Women’s Day is a national holiday in many countries, including Russia where the sales of flowers doubles during the three or four days around 8th March.

In China, many women are given a half-day off work on 8th March, as advised by the State Council, although many employers don’t always pass the half-day on to their female employees.

In Italy, International Women’s Day, or la Festa della Donna, is celebrated by the giving of mimosa blossom. The origin of this tradition is unclear but it is believed to have started in Rome after World War Two.

In the US, the month of March is Women’s History Month. A presidential proclamation issued every year honours the achievements of American women.

This year will look a little different because of coronavirus and more virtual events are expected to take place around the world.

Pécs is a town in the southern part of Hungary with Mediterranean atmosphere, colours and shapes. It owes its irresistible charm to the inseparably intertwined imprint of historical eras and cultures.

Hungary is famous for many things, such as its rich history, delicious cuisine, amazing architecture, thermal baths, the beautiful city of Budapest, and many other things. But Hungarians have more things to be proud of, like the number of Guinness records Hungarians have set. Below you can read a selection of the most unusual ones.

The Largest Menu

On 24 April 2006, András Halasi set a record with the largest restaurant menu. Mófarguru in Budapest prides itself on a splendid menu of a total of 192 pages listing 1,810 items. In addition to Hungarian, it was available in English, German, Italian, French, and Spanish. Unfortunately, it seems that the restaurant has closed.

Pianist with the world’s fastest hands

Balázs Havasi set this record in 2009 at the Hungarian Music Academy in front of an audience. He hit the same key 498 times in just 60 seconds.

The biggest book on Earth – Exhibited in Aggtelek

Béla Varga and his son, Gábor, made a giant book, which got the title of the world’s biggest book back in 2009. The book looks like a codex, and its title is Our Fragile Nature Heritage. It presents the wildlife and natural value of the Zemplén Mountains, with illustrations. The book has 346 pages, weighs 1,420 kg, has a height of 4.18 metres and a width of 3.77 metres.

The largest collection of number plates (licence plates)

Péter Kenyeres and Tamás Kenyeres began to collect licence plates in the 1990s. In 2011, their work turned into a great achievement when their name made it to the Guinness World Records. Their collection consists of 11,345 different number plates from a total of 133 countries.

Most pairs slow dancing in the same place

In 2009, in Paris, 2,515 pairs were slow dancing at the same time in the wonderful city of Paris. In 2012, even more people gathered to slow dance in Budapest, breaking the French record.

The world’s largest postcard

The world’s largest postcard was painted by patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in eight cities of Hungary. The postcard is truly impressive with its 86.4 square metres. The giant postcard was presented in Millenáris Park on October 12 back in 2013, on the World Arthritis Day, organised by the Association of Hungarian Rheumatic Patients.

The world’s tallest LEGO tower

In 2014, a 34.76-metre-tall tower was built of 450,000 pieces in front of St. Stephen Basilica in Budapest. According to the rules, no type of glue could be used, and the tower was torn down the day after setting the record. The record was later broken by Denmark and Germany as well.

Most flips of a bottle on the back of one’s hand in one minute

György Kovács was only 23 years old when he set the record in 2017. At the time, he worked at an American restaurant chain in Liverpool, which helped him organise the record attempt. He flipped a bottle 146 times in one minute, using only the back of his hand.

Hungary’s biggest apple

Zoltán Szabó works in agriculture and has an impressive apple tree cultivation. He has Red Jonaprince apples, which grow to a bigger size than other apple types, but one morning, his employee found an apple that was suspected to set a record. And so it happened that the record-sized apple weighed 900 grams, almost 1 kg.

More than 1,000 plush pandas

Dr Dóra Rákóczi has been collecting items depicting pandas for 31 years. In March 2021, she showcased Hungary’s largest plush panda collection. Over 1,000 plush pandas are stored in her home in plastic bags. But even more items, images, magnets, pens, and other things resembling or depicting pandas can be found in her enormous collection, amounting to another 2,500 items.

Queen Elizabeth II wrote a letter to the pensioner residents of a retirement house in Hungary. According to hellovidek.hu, the residents of the retirement house were surprised to receive a letter from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Never before has such an important letter arrived at Dóc, a small village of Southern Hungary, 162 km far from Budapest.

The residents received a royal greeting from Queen Elizabeth written in the summer residence of the British Royal Family. According to delmagyar.hu, the Ápolás Extra Egyesület (Extra Care Association) is operating a family-style residential home in Dóc. Nursing director Lili Bajusz and Norbert Rostás, chairman of the association, have been working in England in nursing homes. They created their own retirement home based on that experience, following the patterns they saw in England.

Apart from individual care, they organise many programs, but their opportunities narrowed during the coronavirus epidemic. As a result, for example, they were watching movies together. They watched The Crown, a series about the life of Elizabeth II.

Many of the residents fancied the beautifully decorated, handwritten letters showed in the series. That resulted in the idea that they would send a letter to the Queen. They sent it in early summer when they celebrated her becoming the longest-sitting monarch on the British throne and grieved for the loss of Prince Philip. Therefore, they not only greeted Elizabeth II, but offered their condolences, too.

The Queen received hundreds of letters every day. However, she only reads the ones that are handwritten and, in some way, unique. Therefore, they chose a special, pinkish, glittering paper. They attached a photo montage of the residents, too.

The reply came from the Balmoral Castle signed by Elizabeth Leeming, the first secretary of the Queen. She conveyed Her Majesty’s thanks for the letter and the photo. Mr Rostás said they had sent their letter addressed to Buckingham Palace in June because then the Queen was there. However, it seems that it was worth sending it after her when she moved to her summer residence.

What Do People Do?

There are a number of customs associated with Whit Monday. Cheese rolling and throwing competitions are held in some parts of England. In other parts of the country, Whit walks, which are parades led by local brass bands, clergy, dignitaries and local organizations, are held. The walks are often concluded by various activities that include competitions, dancing and food.

In the United States some churches organize Whit Monday prayer rallies, which include prayers and street marches. In France it is a holiday that is respected by many citizens. In 2005 millions of workers stayed at home during Whit Monday, despite the government’s cancellation of the holiday, causing a halt in public transport and the closure of many municipal offices. The French government recently reinstated Whit Monday as a public holiday, while retaining a more flexible Day of Solidarity.

Public Life

Whit Monday is a public holiday in some places around the world, including countries in Europe such as Austria, Hungary, Denmark, France, Germany and Norway. Whit Monday is not a federal holiday in countries such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Background

Christian Pentecost commemorates the Holy Spirit’s visit to the apostles who received the “gift of tongues” on the 50th day after Easter.  It also marks the birth of the Christian Church. Although it is not certain when Pentecost was first observed by Christians, it may have been early as the first century. Pentecost occurs roughly seven weeks after Easter Sunday, or 50 days after Easter, including Easter Day. The Easter date depends on the ecclesiastical approximation of the March equinox. Like Pentecost, Whit Monday is movable because it is determined by the Easter date.

Whit Monday used to be one of the major annual holidays in Pennsylvania Dutch country in the United States. From around 1835 to just after the Civil War, Whit Monday was referred to as the “Dutch Fourth of July” in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where people came to eat, drink and be entertained. Whit Monday was once a public holiday in Ireland and was a bank holiday in the United Kingdom until 1967, when it was formally replaced by a fixed spring holiday on the last Monday in May in 1971.

In some Orthodox churches, Whit Monday is observed after the date set by the western churches. This is because some Orthodox churches still observe holidays according to the Julian calendar, which preceded the Gregorian calendar adopted by many western churches.

Symbols

Whit Monday gets its English name from Whit Sunday, or Whitsunday, which referred to the white garments worn on Pentecost by the newly baptized. The symbols of Pentecost are those of the Holy Spirit and include flames, wind, the breath of God and a dove.

If you’ve ever found your dog’s favorite toy nestled between pillows or under a pile of loose dirt in the backyard, then you’ve probably come to understand that dogs like to bury things. Like many of their behaviors, digging is an instinct. But where does that impulse come from?

Cesar’s Way explains that before dogs were domesticated and enjoyed bags of processed dog food set out in a bowl by their helpful human friends, they were responsible for feeding themselves. If they caught a meal, it was important to keep other dogs from running off with it. To help protect their food supply, it was necessary to bury it. Obscuring it under dirt helped keep other dogs off the scent.

This behavior persists even when a dog knows some kibble is on the menu. It may also manifest itself when a dog has more on its plate than it can enjoy at any one time. The ground is a good place to keep something for later.

But food isn’t the only reason a dog will start digging. If they’ve nabbed something of yours, like a television remote, they may be expressing a desire to play.

Some dog breeds are more prone to digging than others. Terriers, dachshunds, beagles, basset hounds, and miniature schnauzers go burrowing more often than others, though pretty much any dog will exhibit the behavior at times. While there’s nothing inherently harmful about it, you should always be sure a dog in your backyard isn’t being exposed to any lawn care products or other chemicals that could prove harmful. You should also probably keep your remote in a safe place, before the dog decides to relocate it for you.

11 April is National Poetry Day in Hungary. We celebrate poetry and remember one of the greatest Hungarian poets, Attila József, who was born on this day in 1905.

Let us celebrate both poetry and Attila József today with one of his well-known poems written for his own 32nd birthday and translated masterfully by Peter Zollman.

ON MY BIRTHDAY
