Easter is coming, and, if you’re like many people around the US, you’re anxiously anticipating the arrival of the Easter Bunny – and several pounds of chocolate and candy.

While you count down the hours, check out these 10 uncommon facts about the holiday.

Number 10. Most Americans agree on how to eat a chocolate bunny. 76 percent say the proper way to do it is ears first.

Number 9. Some world traditions are incredibly elaborate. In Guatemala, for example, carpets stretching up to a mile-long are made from flowers and sawdust during the weeks before Easter. On the day of the holiday, people walk on it on their way to church.

Number 8. There’s an Easter egg worth over 8 million dollars. Described as a cross between a Faberge and the Damien Hirst skull, the ornament is covered with over a thousand diamonds. Nested inside is a gold egg with a rock crystal dove inside that.

Number 7. The Easter Bunny has a mysterious past. Details of its emergence as a symbol of the holiday are sketchy, but according to history.com, it traveled to America with the Germans in the 1700’s. The country has long told stories about an egg-laying hare.

Number 6. The holiday brings out some people’s inner jokester. Perhaps giddy because it’s springtime, manufacturers make all sorts of goofy merchandise for Easter. Notable among the stuff is a card that features terrified eggs, a dish of colored liquid, and the caption ‘Where Eggs Come To Dye‘.

Number 5. Egg decorating goes back hundreds of years. History.com says that the tradition dates back to the 13th century. At the time, eggs were a mandatory Lenten sacrifice, so in preparation for the day they could once again be enjoyed, people made them extra special by embellishing them.

Number 4. In Australia they have an Easter Bilby instead of a bunny. Well, at least some people are trying to make that the case.

Number 2. A seriously large amount of candy is sold for the holiday. Annually, about 2 billion dollars worth of sweet stuff ends up in the hands, baskets, and stomachs of American consumers.

Number 1. The largest egg hunt in history was held at Cypress Gardens in 2007. The Florida theme park hid over half a million eggs. Nearly 10 thousand children and their parents scoured the grounds looking for them.

When Gustave Eiffel designed the Eiffel Tower, he created a sky-high landmark for the public—and for himself, he included a secret apartment.

According to Atlas Obscura, the tiny apartment was perched 1000 feet in the air, providing Eiffel with a bird’s-eye view of 1890s-era Paris. He furnished the lofty abode with wallpaper, cabinets, furniture, oil paintings, and a grand piano. There was also a small adjacent room with laboratory equipment, which allowed Eiffel to conduct meteorological observations, The Independent writes.

While many elite members of the public clamored to rent the space, Eiffel shunned their exorbitant offers. Instead, he used it to greet illustrious guests like Thomas Edison (who gave him a phonograph machine as a gift), or as a quiet space for solitary reflection.

Author Jill Jonnes provides a great visual image of what an evening was like in Eiffel’s private apartment in her 2010 book Eiffel’s Tower: The Thrilling Story Behind Paris’s Beloved Monument and the Extraordinary World’s Fair That Introduced It. She describes one evening that Edison and other luminaries spent in Eiffel’s aerie:

“The guests settled in on the dark velvet settees trimmed in fringe. The walls, a warm yellow, were already covered with framed artistic mementos: photographs, drawings, paintings. “Eiffel has a piano there,” said Edison. “Gounoud, the composer of ‘Faust,’ played and sang, and he did it splendidly, too, despite his more than eighty years.” High above Paris, Gounoud’s music wafted forth as the guests smoked cigars, drank brandy, talked, and even sang, a magical late-summer interlude. Working quietly in the background was American artist A.A. Anderson, best known for his oil portraits, but invited by Eiffel to try to capture Edison’s likeness as best he could in a sculpted bust that would commemorate this occasion of genius honoring genius.”

The apartment was closed to the public for years, but in May 2015, Condé Nast Traveler announced that it would open to visitors. You can’t stay overnight, but you can peer into the space – which contains its original furnishings, along with life-size mannequins of Eiffel and Edison—and admire the private hideaway of the famous French civil engineer and architect.

Pizza is everything. What should we have for lunch? Pizza. What should we have for dinner? How about pizza? What should we have for breakfast the next day? Definitely leftover pizza.

One of the most popular foods in the world, pizza has become unique and variants have evolved based on culture and preference. There are so many variations, Italy even proposed that it be proclaimed a protected landmark.

On the PBS Idea Channel, Mike Rugnetta delves into the world of pizza, outlining its humble beginnings (in ancient times, people used “bread as a plate”—pizza began as a simple meal that quickly took on a life of its own) and its ever changing, occasionally polarizing ways of being served.

Our historical pizza journey begins with the iconic New York City Slice. In New York City alone, there are an estimated 2,000 pizza shops, the first of which that we know of having made its NYC debut in 1905 at a restaurant called Lombardi’s. This thin slice is designed for quick service—a plus for the diner on the go.

The New York City slice was developed off the template of Neapolitan pizza; the simple combination of bread, cheese, and tomatoes was considered low-class food at the time, even though these days we classify it as fancy pizza. I’d say we can probably blame that on the “less is more” design standard.

As we move through the history of pizza we learn about the focaccia-based square Sicilian slice, which evolves into the Grandma slice, which evolves into deep-dish. In other words, pizza is the Pokemon of the food world. (The video doesn’t say that, I’m just calling it so.)

Chicago style deep-dish pizza arrived on the scene in the 1940s. This evolution of the Sicilian pizza was uniquely localized, and its preference has divided pizza fans throughout the ages.

Pizza’s origins may be in Italy, but the dish has become an all-American pastime, as proved by the proliferation of frozen delivery and pizza delivery. In 1961, Dominick’s Pizza, later renamed Domino’s, invented the idea that “pizza comes to you.” This seemingly obvious idea revolutionized the industry and how we consume the savory pie today.

If we’re learning about the history of pizza, we inevitably end up with leftover pizza, a dish that magically transforms itself overnight into a different meal entirely. As Rugnetta so eloquently puts it, leftover pizza is “an artifact that remains commemorating D&D games, or Netflix marathons, all-nighters, hack-a-thons and various get-togethers.” Mmm, leftover pizza. So many memories, all of them delicious.

The eighth and final slice in this rundown is the international slice. Pizza has become such a global phenomenon that the pie takes on flavors and distinctions characteristically local to its origin. In other countries you’re likely to find toppings as varied as curry, tuna, and even Vegemite.

You don’t need an Advent calendar to know that Christmas is coming, but opening a little numbered door to reveal a prize is an idea that everyone – religious or not – can get behind. Here’s a brief history of Advent calendars.

WHAT IS ADVENT?

Advent is the four-week period beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle (November 30) through the following three Sundays. Historians estimate that Advent, which derives from the Latin word for coming, has been celebrated since the 4th century. Originally, the period was a time for converts to Christianity to prepare for baptism, but it’s now more commonly associated with the anticipation of the anniversary of Christ’s birth on December 25.

ADVENT CALENDAR ORIGINS

Advent calendars typically don’t follow the period of Advent described above. Instead, they begin on December 1 and mark the 24 days before Christmas. Today, most Advent calendars include paper doors that open to reveal an image, Bible verse, or piece of chocolate. The tradition dates to the mid-19th century, when German Protestants made chalk marks on doors or lit candles to count the days leading up to Christmas. The first known Advent Calendar which is from 1851. Other early styles were the Advent clock or the Advent candle – a candle for each of the 24 days until Christmas, like today’s Advent wreath. In religious families little pictures were hung up on the wall – one for each day in December. Another tradition was to paint chalk strokes on the door, one per day until Christmas Eve.

THE FIRST PRINTED ADVENT CALENDARS

The German Gerhard Lang is widely considered the producer of the first printed Advent calendar in the early 1900s.

Around the same time, a German newspaper the “Neues Tagblatt Stuttgart” included an Advent calendar insert as a gift to its readers. Lang’s calendar was inspired by one that his mother had made for him and featured 24 colored pictures that attached to a piece of cardboard. Lang modified his calendars to include the little doors that are a staple of most Advent calendars today and they became a commercial success in Germany. Production stopped due to a cardboard shortage during World War II, but resumed soon after, with Richard Sellmer emerging as the leading producer of commercial Advent calendars.

Dwight D. Eisenhower is often credited for the proliferation of the Advent calendar tradition in the United States. During his presidency, Eisenhower was photographed opening an Advent calendar with his grandchildren and the photo ran in several national newspapers.

THE $50,000 ADVENT CALENDAR

One of the most expensive Advent calendars to ever hit the shelves was a 4-foot, Christmas-tree shaped structure carved from burrelm and walnut wood available through Harrods in 2007. Each of the $50,000 calendar’s 24 compartments housed a piece of organic chocolate from Green & Black, with proceeds going to support cocoa farmers in Belize.

THE WORLD’S LARGEST ADVENT CALENDAR

According to Guinness World Records, the world’s largest advent calendar was built in 2007 at the St. Pancras train station in London. The massive calendar, which measured 232 feet and 11 inches tall, and 75 feet and 5 inches wide, celebrated the reopening of the station following a renovation.

However, once the war was over the production of advent calendars soon picked back up in 1946, not containing chocolates though.

Towards the end of the 1950’s, chocolate advent calendars re-appeared and started to spread across the world. Ten years later, many countries were using the advent calendar to count the days to …… (7).

Advent calendars are still very popular all across the world and now come in thousands of different varieties, some with just pictures in, others with just chocolate. The religious meaning of the advent calendars has been lost though. Also they don’t stop on Christmas Eve, normally they have a bigger door for Christmas Day.

What is Advent?

Advent is the period that leads into Christmas. It’s an important time of preparation and expectant waiting. In this lesson you’re going to learn about what Advent means in the UK. Advent is the Anglicisation of the Latin word ‘adventus’. What does ‘adventus’ mean? The answer is at the end of the video. Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year or church year, and begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas so it always falls between the 27^th November and the 3^rd December. The religious meaning behind the advent period is to anticipate and to prepare for the second coming of Christ by anticipating and preparing for Christmas. The lighting of an advent wreath candle is a common way to countdown to Christmas. The wreath is made of evergreen branches and has four candles arranged around it. The candles represent the four Sundays of advent and one candle is lit on each Sunday in Advent. Often there is fifth candle in the centre and this last candle is lit on Christmas Day. Advent is also a countdown for the non-religious as advent calendars are a very popular form of confectionary. These are a type of calendar that have a door for every day of Advent. Behind each door is an item, usually chocolate and people use them as a countdown to Christmas. The chocolates are often made into the shape of Christmas icons such as mistletoe and bells.

Advent is the time when Christmas preparations really move up a gear. Presents are wrapped, trees are decorated, and every town and city becomes Christmassy thanks to decorations and illuminations.

And now here is the answer to the earlier quiz. Advent is the Anglicisation of the Latin word ‘adventus’. What does ‘adventus’ mean? It means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’. When I became Princess Diana’s chef, she got her life back on track. She was patron of 119 different charities. She said, “Darren, you take care of all the fats.” “And I’ll take care of the carbs at the gym.” Now, this meant that she was now eating healthy. And her go-to breakfast was something called overnight oats.

Now, today, overnight oats are really popular. Everybody’s eating them. But they date back to 2012. That’s when you couldn’t even go on social media without seeing a recipe for overnight oats. But Princess Diana was eating overnight oats almost 20 years earlier in 1993. Where did she get the recipe from? Did she invent them? No. She actually went to a Swiss health clinic. And there she had these overnight oats and they were actually called Bircher muesli. And they were invented by a Swiss nutritionist and she thought they were really, really good. And all the ingredients were super healthy. She stole the recipe, came back and said, “Darren, I want these for breakfast every day.”

Oats are just rich in fiber. And perfect for breakfast every morning. But when you actually have them cold with a little liquid over them and they’re steeped overnight. And then you add all these ingredients there too, it just takes them to the next level. And all these individual nutrients going into the breakfast dish make it amazing. And that means adding a liquid to them. And I use rolled oats in there. You can use the pinhead. Don’t use the quick oats or anything like that. The rolled oats, in my opinion, they’re the best.

So I’m adding freshly squeezed orange juice into my oats. The oats, covered with plastic then and put them in the refrigerator. And leave them overnight. Overnight oats. In the morning, the oats will have swelled up. Absorbed most of the liquid. Now, into there, I’m going to add some Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is an incredible protein. And just what you need really to start the day. You know, you add the oats and you soak them in the whiskey. And then you add the cream in there, the whipped cream. And lots of sugar. Well, this is a lot healthier and oh, so much tastier too.

So just lightly fold in the Greek yogurt. And once that’s folded in, I’m going to put some honey in there too. I like to use raw honey. And with the raw honey, I say just do that to taste. If you like it really, really sweet, then obviously put a little bit more in. But not too much. Then I’m going to put some lemon juice in there too. Now, there are many different things that you can add into the dish now. Uh, lots of different fruits, you know, all the berries and the strawberries and the chia seeds are really popular now too. But this is the classic traditional dish that Princess Diana had for breakfast every morning.

So in there, we take some apple. And I like the honey crisp apples. They’re sweet. And leave the skin on as well. And then you’re just going to grate this into those oats. Stir the apples into the mixture. And we’ve got texture, we’ve got fiber. We’ve got protein. We’ve just got everything in there. Then I’m going to take a few blueberries. And I’ve got these really, really big jumbo blueberries because they just have so much flavor to them. And I’m going to drop those in. And a few walnuts too. Walnuts, super food, super healthy. And then just fold those in as well.

Then I’m going to put it into the glass. Now, I have to admit that when I was making this at Kensington Palace for Princess Diana, it was so good. I actually used to double the recipe so that the chef got it for breakfast too. And some blueberries. Princess Diana’s overnight oats. How easy are they to make? And super healthy too. You can soak the oats overnight and all you do is throw the fruit in there and the nuts in the morning. And there you go. And it’s so much cheaper than buying them at the store ready-made.

Step 1: You will need

    * 2 sausages
    * 100 g mushrooms
    * 2 Rashers bacon
    * 2 eggs
    * 150 g baked beans
    * vegetable oil
    * ketchup or brown sauce
    * 1 knife
    * 1 chopping board
    * 1 wooden stirring spoon
    * 1 spatula
    * 1 small saucepan
    * 2 frying pans

    * 15 minutes

Step 2: Sausages
We start with our sausages. Quality is crucial here – go for ones with a high percentage of pork and natural ingredients. Place them in a frying pan with preheated vegetable oil. They’ll take the longest to cook of all our ingredients, around 12 minutes, with regular turning required. They make a lovely, reassuring sizzle as they fry.

Step 3: Mushrooms
Wash and slice the mushrooms. Add them to some preheated vegetable oil in a separate frying pan, then stir and toss them on a gentle heat for about 5 minutes. After that, consign them to a warm plate until the rest of the fry-up is finished, which won’t be long now. Because things are really starting to hot up.

Step 4: Bacon
Bacon next; when the sausages have been frying for 8 minutes, add the rashers to the same pan and turn them every minute or two.

Step 5: Baked beans
As soon as your bacon’s under way, the baked beans go on the stove. They require a gentle heat and plenty of stirring. Now it’s a total juggling act!

Step 6: Eggs
While you keep an eye on all that sizzling and bubbling, replenish the other frying pan with oil and put it on a medium heat in readiness for the eggs. Keep turning the bacon and stirring the beans; then crack one egg… and two, into the empty frying pan. Transfer it to the hottest plate on the stove if necessary – keep stirring those beans! And we’re nearly done. The final touch is to get your spatula and splash hot oil over the eggs until the yolks go opaque. This is a sure sign that they’re cooked properly. And when they’re done, the whole meal is done.

Step 7: Serve
Add it all to the plate with the mushrooms on and get ready for the Full English experience. Try a little tomato ketchup or brown sauce for the finishing touch to the perfect fried breakfast.
