THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP

1. Step 1: What is sleep?

Being asleep means you are effectively unconscious to the sensory world. That means you won’t hear, feel, taste, or smell, and you wouldn’t even see if your eyes were pulled open but if one or more stimulus is strong enough it will wake you. You will experience 5 stages of sleep in recurring cycles of around 90 to 110 minutes.

2. Step 2: Stage one
Your stage one sleep cycle lasts around 10 minutes. Your body becomes more drowsy, your eyes shut but you will still be acutely aware of your surroundings. You can be woken easily during this stage and if you are then you’ll feel like you’ve had no rest at all. Your body activity reduces by 50% at this early stage. During this stage, many people experience sudden muscle contractions or a sensation of falling. This gets the body ready for deeper sleep activity

3. Step 3: Stage two
Stage 2 lasts about 15 minutes, your eye movement all but stops and your brain waves become much slower called theta waves. Your muscles will tense and relax intermittently, which might make you twitch slightly. Your body temperature will also fall. You are now ready for deeper sleep.

4. Step 4: Stages three and four
The third and fourth stages of sleep are known as deep sleep time or delta sleep. Breathing and heart rates reach their lowest levels and the brain starts to produce large slow waves known as delta waves. It’s very difficult to be woken from deep sleep. The brain produces slow delta waves almost exclusively and there will be no eye movement or muscle activity. At this stage your glands secrete large amounts of growth hormones, and as a result help restore your body from the wear and tear of daily activity. This is when you may experience sleep walking or night terrors, and in the case of small children, bedwetting. Stages 2 and 3 are repeated before the brain moves onto the final stage of sleep, REM.

5. Step 5: Stage five
Rapid eye movement or REM sleep is referred to as such because this is when you dream, so your eyes respond by moving rapidly beneath closed eyelids. Physically your breathing and blood pressure rise, although effectively your body is paralyzed from the neck down. This is said to be a way our bodies stop us from acting out our dreams.
There is much speculation as to the benefits of REM sleep, but there is strong evidence suggesting this is when you’ll sort through all the information you picked up in the day. Your brain discards unnecessary information and consolidates all your new memories. You will move into REM state around 70 to 90 minutes after going to sleep, and you’ll return to this stage another 3 to 5 times during the night. REM sleep completes your sleeping cycle before the whole process starts again.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 23, 1564. Son of a glover and leather merchant, he very likely attended the local grammar school but there is no proof whatsoever of him going to university, despite the brilliance of his plays and sonnets. The next documented event in Shakespeare’s life is his 1582 marriage to Anne Hathaway, who was 8 years older and pregnant at the time. The couple had a daughter the following year and twins in 1583, but their only son, Hamnet died at the age of 11.

There is no information of Shakespeare’s whereabouts for the seven years before documents show him making a name for himself in London as an actor and playwright in 1592. Two years later he was a business partner in the group called Lord Chamberlain’s Men to become the King’s Men after James I came to the throne in 1603. His company was the most successful one in London and his plays were so much admired that he published them and the audience bought the “penny-copies” as popular literature. No playwright had been able to do this during his lifetime before. This was a period when owning books was a luxury for most people.

In 1599 the troupe built the Globe, an open-air theatre on the Southern bank of the Thames and in 1608 they also acquired an indoor theatre, where they played for a refined audience. In Elizabethan times all sorts of people went to the theatre to see the all-male cast perform comedies and bloody tragedies. It was a type of entertainment similar to the cinema in the first half of the 20^th century. Business was good and Shakespeare became a wealthy man. He retired around 1613 and died in Stratford, aged 52, on his birthday. Thirty-six of his plays were published by his fellow actors in 1623 in a book that became the main source of the Shakespeare revival of the 19^th century.

RALPH AS NURSE: “I know her age unto an hour. She’s not 14.”

LORELAI: I melted three entire candy canes into this not-very-large cup of coffee, and still I can barely taste it.
RORY: I know.
LORELAI: It’s just the vaguest whisper of peppermint.
RORY: Peppermint.
LORELAI: I swear I could get the same effect if I put Vaporub on my chest and drank coffee at the same time.
RORY: Peppermint.
LORELAI: I mean how arbitrary is it to decide to stop serving candy-cane coffee the day after Christmas? Christmas spirit is not something that can be turned off like a faucet on December 26th.
RORY: Yeah, it stinks.
LORELAI: On the plus side, any chest congestion I had is now totally cleared up.
RORY: So that’s good.
LORELAI: Well, let’s go Christmas-shopping.
RORY: Write your letter.
LORELAI: I can’t. I need a treat.
RORY: This was your treat, coming to Weston’s was supposed to buck up your spirits and inspire your writing.
LORELAI: No, candy-cane coffee was supposed to be my treat. This coffee is no treat. Let’s face it — this is un-candy-cane-coffee coffee, and it’s totally un-bucking up my spirits. So it’s decided — let’s go shopping.
RORY: Write.
LORELAI: Rory, I can’t. Ooh. I have an idea. Excuse me. Hi. Merry Christmas.
SUE: Christmas is over.
LORELAI: Okay. Sue — pretty name. I have a hunch that there’s some of the secret candy-cane-coffee mix just sitting in the back there, and I wonder if I could make it worth your while if you and I could come to some sort of arrangement.
SUE: Like I said before we stop selling candy-cane coffee when Christmas is over.
LORELAI: Right I’m not talking about selling it. I’m talking about maybe if you misplaced a canister or two.
SUE: Misplaced?
LORELAI: Misplaced.
SUE: Honey.
LORELAI: Yes?
SUE: Christmas is over.
LORELAI: Okay.

The Godfather: opening scene

BONASERA: I believe in America. America has made my fortune. And I raised my daughter in the American fashion. I gave her freedom, but – I taught her never to dishonor her family. She found a boyfriend; not an Italian. She went to the movies with him; she stayed out late. I didn’t protest. Two months ago, he took her for a drive, with another boyfriend. They made her drink whiskey. And then they tried to take advantage of her. She resisted. She kept her honor. So they beat her, like an animal. When I went to the hospital, her nose was broken. Her jaw was shattered, held together by wire. She couldn’t even weep because of the pain. But I wept. Why did I weep? She was the light of my life – beautiful girl. Now she will never be beautiful again. Sorry…

[Bonasera, taking the drink, sips from the shot glass]

I – I went to the police, like a good American. These two boys were brought to trial. The judge sentenced them to three years in prison – suspended sentence. Suspended sentence! They went free that very day! I stood in the courtroom like a fool. And those two bastards, they smiled at me. Then I said to my wife, “for justice, we must go to Don Corleone.”

VITO CORLEONE: Why did you go to the police? Why didn’t you come to me first?

BONASERA: What do you want of me? Tell me anything. But do what I beg you to do.

VITO CORLEONE: What is that?

BONASERA: I want them dead.

VITO CORLEONE: That I cannot do.

BONASERA: I’ll give you anything you ask.

VITO CORLEONE: We’ve known each other many years, but this is the first time you came to me for counsel, for help. I can’t remember the last time that you invited me to your house for a cup of coffee, even though my wife is godmother to your only child. But let’s be frank here: you never wanted my friendship. And uh, you were afraid to be in my debt.

BONASERA: I didn’t want to get into trouble.

VITO CORLEONE: I understand. You found paradise in America, had a good trade, made a good living. The police protected you; and there were courts of law. And you didn’t need a friend of me. But uh, now you come to me and you say – “Don Corleone give me justice.” – But you don’t ask with respect. You don’t offer friendship. You don’t even think to call me Godfather. Instead, you come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married, and you uh ask me to do murder, for money.

BONASERA: I ask you for justice.

VITO CORLEONE: That is not justice; your daughter is still alive.

BONASERA: Then they can suffer then, as she suffers. How much shall I pay you?

VITO CORLEONE: Bonasera… Bonasera… What have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully? Had you come to me in friendship, then this scum that ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day. And that by chance if an honest man such as yourself should make enemies, then they would become my enemies. And then they would fear you.

BONASERA: Be my friend – Godfather?

VITO CORLEONE: Good. Some day, and that day may never come, I’ll call upon you to do a service for me. But uh, until that day – accept this justice as a gift on my daughter’s wedding day.

BONASERA: Grazie, Godfather.

VITO CORLEONE: Prego.
