A tévedésből immár 10 éves barátság született, és Jamal immár családtag lett Wandáéknál. A történetet azóta is számos újság és tévécsatorna követi, ismerkedjetek vele most meg ti is.

Decide if the statements are true or false!

1. The speaker interviewed Jamal in high school ten years ago.
2. Wanda Dench mistakenly texted Jamal thinking he was her grandson.
3. Jamal has never met Wanda’s family in the past ten years.
4. Wanda has faced significant challenges in her life, including losing her husband.
5. The media has lost interest in Wanda and Jamal’s story over the years.
6. This year, Jamal will host Thanksgiving dinner for the first time.
7. Wanda and Jamal have only met during Thanksgiving celebrations.

Okay, you might remember this story. 10 years ago, we brought you the story of Wanda and Jamal, the grandma who texted the wrong kid for Thanksgiving. And he showed up anyway. They’re still going strong and meeting again this year. Didn’t they make a movie about this even?

I feel there was there’s so much coverage and media on this and so many updates. I’m not sure exactly where they’re at, but yeah. So it’s a big story. It’s turned into a big thing. And they’re still doing it. 12 News journalist William Pitts talked with both of them today. Jamal, I can’t believe that actually 10 years ago, I was in your high school interviewing you in a classroom. That’s the weird part for me. That’s the weird part for me.

Yes. That’s crazy. I can’t believe 10 years ago I graduated.

10 years since that first mistaken Thanksgiving, when Wanda Dench texted Jamal Hinton by mistake. She thought it was her grandson’s number. He answered, “No, but can I get a plate?” Wanda said, “Of course, that’s what grandmas do.” And a tradition was born. Now, 10 years later, they’re still meeting for dinner, and people still love them.

You know, that dumbfounds me. You know, I’ve said many a time. You know, the first year, I kind of get it. You know, you know, for regular people like us. You get 15 minutes of fame in the news. For the media to keep coming every year to want to interview us and find out what we’re up to and doing, and we’re doing the same thing all the time. Um, it still it I I it still surprises me.

It’s not just Thanksgiving either. They’ve been through life together. Jamal’s graduated, gotten engaged, gone into business. Wanda’s moved twice, lost her husband to COVID, survived breast cancer, and every year we catch up with them. I I never thought I would be here in um, in this chair celebrating our 10th year.

Should I still post about this? Should I Does anyone even care? I was told this one time before from a mentor of mine, like, hey, if it if it only makes one person happy, that it was worth it.

This year, it’s Jamal’s turn to host. Yes, I’m going to meet his family for the first time. For the first time. You 10 years you’ve never? Nope. Never met his family. That’s right. In 10 years, Wanda’s never met Jamal’s family. And in 10 years, Jamal has also never cooked.

But you got out of cooking. I mean, you did. Yeah, 10 years straight. Green Giant has is catering our Thanksgiving, so that’s how come he got out of it. Me and Wanda been talking about it next year.

Oh, yeah. Oh, I’m not letting him get out of next year. He’s cooking. You can’t mess up the turkey. So I’m going to take this year and probably make a turkey either every month or every other month so I can perfect my craft before we get to Thanksgiving. So, wish me luck for next year.

William Pitts, 12 News.

Oh, I love it. So this is me and if you get a random text, you should answer it. I’ve What do you get a lot of those? You probably shouldn’t. I don’t. I’m glad he did though. It’s been a great story. And Jamal, I got to tell you, you take a one of those roasting bags and put the bird in there and and go by the pounds of how long you it’s it’s mistake-free. Yeah, it’s perfect every time. It comes out all right. Try a roasting bag. It’ll change your life. All right.

Sweets of Thanksgiving – Hálaadás napi desszertek https://www.5percangol.hu/receptek/sweets-of-thanksgiving-halaadas-napi-desszertek/ Thu, 27 Nov 2025 23:46:33 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=148039 In the United States Thanksgiving is regarded as one of the most important holidays, and includes various lovely traditions and family members come together. The best time during this period is undoubtedly the dinner, when families come together and take part in a meal that is full of appreciation.

The main feature during Thanksgiving dinners is the roasted turkey in the center of the table. The feast always concludes with an autumn dessert, mostly with some kind of pie. The most popular autumn pies are pumpkin pie, apple pie, maple pie and sweet potato pie, which always come with cream, vanilla ice cream or whipped cream topping as a condiment

Around these traditional pies, some other families offer the not so traditional yet delicious cranberry pie, with a rich and buttery shortbread crust and lots of fresh cranberries folded into a sweet cream filling. Throughout autumn season not only pies, but other small desserts are enjoyed equally, just like the popular cinnamon rolls, that are sometimes served as a sweet snack or even for breakfast.

Food is not only fuelling a body but also enhancing the spirit and moods of the holiday as people come together and appreciate the goodness in life. Each household will have some differences in food traditions, but there is always the essential reason for celebrating Thanksgiving in love, appreciation, and lots of sweet and yummy treats.

No Bake Cranberry Pie

cooking time: 1 hour 15 minutes
total time: 3 hours 40 minutes

Ingredients for the crust:

– 2 packages of Walkers Shortbread Fingers or Walkers Shortbread Rounds
– ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
– 2 tbsp granulated sugar

Ingredients for the filling:

– 340 gr cranberries, fresh or frozen
– 2/3 cup granulated sugar
– 3 tbsp orange juice
– 85g cranberry or raspberry gelatin
– 1 cup heavy whipping cream
– 2 tbsp powdered sugar

  2. Press the crumb mixture into a 22cm pie plate and refrigerate while you make the filling.
  3. Bring cranberries, sugar, and orange juice to a boil in a medium saucepan. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook 8-10 minutes or until the cranberries are done popping and are cooked. While the cranberries are still hot, strain through a mesh strainer.
  4. Stir the gelatin into the warm strained cranberries. Cool to room temperature on the counter (about 1 hour). Do not refrigerate.
  5. Once the cranberry mixture is cooled, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar in a bowl until stiff peaks Fold the whipped cream into the cranberry mixture.
  6. Spread into the prepared crust and refrigerate until at least four hours or until set.
  7. Garnish with additional whipped cream and sugared cranberries if desired.

Apple Crumble Pie

preparation time: 30 minutes
cooking time: 1 hour
total time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients for the crust:

– all butter pie crust (or refrigerated pie crust)
– 5-7 Granny Smith apples
– 1 cup sugar
– 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

Ingredients for the crumb:

– 2/3 cup sugar
– 1 ½ cup flour
– ¼ tbsp salt
– 12 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

Preparation:

  1. Roll out your pie crust according to recipe or package directions and place in your 22cm pie plate. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Peel and core the apples, then cut them into thin slices. Place a bit of water in the bottom of a large pot. Add apples and cook, stirring occasionally, approximately 3-5 minutes after water boils, or just until the apples start to turn a bit opaque.
  3. While the apples are cooking, add the crumb ingredients to a large bowl. Using a fork, cut the ingredients together until they form coarse crumbs, about the size of a pea.
  4. Drain apples very well. Let them sit in the strainer for a few minutes to cool, then place them in pie crust. Sprinkle 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon over apples. Add your crumb mixture evenly on top. Place pie on a cookie sheet to avoid mess in the oven. Cover outer edge of crust with thin strips of foil or a pie crust shield.
  5. Bake at 220°C for 10 minutes then lower the oven temperature to 180°C for 30-40 minutes. Remove pie crust shield during the last 15 minutes of baking to ensure that the crust browns.
  6. You can make the pie a day in advance. Refrigerate overnight. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream. Baked pie can be frozen up to a month.

Traditional Pumpkin Pie

preparation time: 20 minutes
cooking time: 40 minutes
total time: 1 hour

Ingredients for the crust:

– 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
– ½ teaspoon salt
– ½ cup cold butter or shortening
– 3 tablespoons cold water, or more as needed

Ingredients for the filling:

– 2 cups mashed, cooked pie pumpkin
– 350ml evaporated milk
– 2 large eggs, beaten
– ¾ cup packed brown sugar
– ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, or more to taste
– ½ teaspoon ground ginger, or more to taste
– ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, or more to taste
– ½ teaspoon salt

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. To make the pastry crust, mix flour and salt together in a bowl. Cut in butter with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in 3 tablespoons water, one at a time, until dough is moist enough to hold together. Add up to 1 more tablespoon water if needed.
  3. Shape dough into a ball with lightly floured hands. Roll dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of 3mm. Place a 22cm pie pan upside-down on the dough; use a sharp knife to cut a circle of dough 1 cm larger than the pie pan. Remove and discard dough scraps and set pie pan aside.
  4. Gently roll circular piece of dough around the rolling pin; transfer it right-side up over the pie pan. Unroll, easing dough into the bottom of the pan. Use two hands to flute the dough around the top edges.
  5. To make the filling, beat pumpkin, evaporated milk, brown sugar, eggs, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl with an electric mixer until well combined. Pour into the prepared crust.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven until a knife inserted into the filling 2.5cm from the edge comes out clean, 40 to 60 minutes. Cover the edges with foil if needed to prevent from burning as the filling cooks.
  7. Remove from the oven and cool to room temperature before serving.

Let’s celebrate Thanksgiving – párbeszéd hanganyaggal (B1-B2) https://www.5percangol.hu/szokincs_main/lets-celebrate-thanksgiving/ Sun, 23 Nov 2025 09:00:16 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=76873

LET’S CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING!
ÜNNEPELJÜK MEG A HÁLAADÁST!

Woman: It’s already the middle of November and Thanksgiving is around the corner. I can’t wait to have the kids at home for a couple of days.
Man: Are they coming home? Have you talked to them?
Woman: Well, I think, it’s obvious. It’s Thanksgiving weekend, everybody visits their family. I’m so excited to meet them and talk to them in person. I know that we often call each other and continuously chat on Messenger, but that’s not the same as meeting them face to face.
Man: Yes, that’s true. What are your plans for Thanksgiving this year?
Woman: The same as every year. A sumptuous Thanksgiving feast of roast turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, corn bread, and pumpkin pie for dessert.
Man: Sounds good, but you know that I don’t really like pumpkin pie. It’s too sweet for my taste.
Woman: I’ll make some apple pie as well, just for you.
Man: Thanks, honey. Any other plans apart from the meal?
Woman: Your parents will be in town. We might invite them over. Your dad loves watching football with you after the Thanksgiving meal and spending a lazy afternoon with the kids.
Man: Good idea. Dad can be really funny when he cheers for the underdog team. He always supports the underdogs. That’s his policy. How are the kids coming home? Are they going to fly or drive?
Woman: I don’t know. But they’d better fly. The roads can get terribly busy before Thanksgiving and I would be anxious about their safety.
Man: Both of them are excellent drivers, so you shouldn’t worry. Are you going to call them to arrange the details or shall I?
Woman: I will call them tonight. The sooner we know the better.

Hallgasd meg (brit angol)

Hallgasd meg (amerikai angol)

Thanksgiving is probably the second biggest holiday in the United States after Christmas. It is time to give thanks, especially for the abundance of food after the harvest and is marked by a great feast. The turkey – thought to be first domesticated by Mesoamericans long before being introduced into Europe by the Spanish, and much later proposed as the symbol of the United States by Benjamin Franklin, instead of the bald eagle – has become the traditional main course of this event. It is often filled with stuffing and served with mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, various vegetable dishes, and pumpkin pie for dessert.

Thanksgiving traditionally dates back to 1621, in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. This was the landing place of Mayflower, a ship full of Pilgrims, seeking freedom from religious persecution back in England. They managed to survive a very difficult first year only with the help of the natives, and so they gave thanks and celebrated together after the first harvest with a three-day feast.

Thanksgiving weekend sees also some of the heaviest traffic of the year as millions of Americans return home to be with their families. Houses are decorated with earthy fall tones and cornucopias or horns of plenty

Monica: Hey!
Will: Hey!
Will: Happy Thanksgiving!
Monica: Aww thanks! God Will I’m so glad that you came! You look great! You must’ve lost like…
Will: 150 pounds. Yeah, I’m gonna be in one of those Subway sandwich commercials.
Monica: A pie!
Will: Oh right. All right, it’s no fat, it’s no sugar, it’s no dairy…it’s no good. Throw it out.
Monica: You wanna meet some people? This is uh; this is my husband Chandler. Chandler, this is Will.
Will: Hey.
Chandler: Oh hey. I’d shake your hand but uh; I’m really into the game. Plus, I think it’d be better for my ego if we didn’t stand right next to each other.
Monica: This is Phoebe.
Phoebe: Hey. Wow! Well done.
Monica: Wanna give me a hand?
Will: Sure! Monica, I can’t get over how great you look! You look stunning!
Monica: Well you look great too! You’re just—you’re so fit!
Chandler: I’m watching the game, but I’m not deaf!
Monica: Oh umm, I meant to tell you, Ross is coming.
Will: Ross is coming. Great! I love Ross!
Monica: Good. And Rachel Green too.
Will: Oh.
Monica: Is there a problem?
Will: Nope. Uh, it’s okay. It’s just uh, God I hated her.
Monica: What?
Will: Yeah, I hated her. She was horrible to me in high school. But hey, it was a long time ago, I’m in a good place, it might be actually fun to see her again. You got any cakes or cookies or something? No, Will, no!
Chandler: Y’know, it’s been a while since we’ve screamed something. Maybe we should.
Phoebe: Oh okay.
Chandler: Oh come on!
Phoebe: Noooo!! Damn you ref! You burn in hell!

Monica: Hey, what are you doing? You gotta save room, you’ve got almost an entire turkey to eat.
Joey: Let me explain to you how the human body works. I have to warm my stomach first. Eatin’ chips is like stretching.
Monica: All right.
Joey: Don’t worry, Tribbianis never get full.
Will: I actually know what you’re talking about. I’m here to tell you something my friend, you can eat and eat and eat but nothing will ever fill that void.
Joey: Who the hell is this guy?
Monica: Will! From high school.
Joey: Oh hey!
Monica: Joey.
Will: Hello.
Ross: Will!
Will: Ross!
Ross: Hey-hey you came! Man you look incredible! Hot stuff! Hot stuff?
Will: It’s good to see you man.
Ross: Yeah, you too. Man, so-so what are you up to?
Will: I’m a commodities broker.
Ross: Really? Yeah that-that sounds interesting.
Will: Yeah, it’s not. But I’m rich and thin.
Ross: Oh! Man I don’t think I’ve seen you since uh, Lance Davis’ graduation party.
Will: That was such a fun night!
Ross: Yeah. It would’ve been good if we had gotten in, but still real fun.
Will: Yeah.
Ross: Yeah.
Will: God we were lame back then. Do you remember how into dinosaurs we were?
Ross: Yeah.
Will: So what do you, what do you do now?
Ross: So how long are you in town?

Rachel: Hi!
Monica: Hey sweetie. Oh good.
Will: Rachel Green.
Ross: Aw – oh, that’s right. Are-are you gonna be okay?
Will: Oh, I’ll-I’ll be fine. Just God I hate her Ross! I hate her!
Ross: Will, high school was-was a long time ago.
Will: Look at her standing there with those yams! My two greatest enemies Ross: Rachel Green and complex carbohydrates.
Rachel: Oh my God Monica, who is that?
Monica: That’s Will from high school!
Rachel: Oh! I do not remember him! Wow! He’s really got that sexy, smoldering thing going on. Oh my God, he’s… Look at the way he’s just staring at me. I think he’s trying to mouth something to me, but I can’t make it out.
Monica: Okay, dinner’s ready!
Chandler: Good game!
Phoebe: Yeah.
Chandler: Yeah. Solid effort. Solid effort.
Monica: Oh, so who won?
Phoebe: Green Bay.
Chandler: Detroit.
Monica: What?
Phoebe: Well the Lions technically won, but it was a moral victory for the Green Bay…Mermen.

Rachel: Hi! Will, right?
Will: Right.
Rachel: Hi! I’m Rachel Green.
Will: Oh I, I remember you.
Rachel: Really?! Aren’t you sweet! I gotta tell you though, I am, I am having the hardest time placing you. Oh, oh hang on! Did we umm, did we fool around at Lance Davis’ graduation party?
Will: You are unbelievable.
Rachel: Thank you!
Monica: Uh, Rachel? Rachel, why don’t you sit here? And Will you sit way over there.

Joey: That’s it?! Even if nobody helps me I can eat that no problem. At least give me a challenge!
Monica: This is Chandler’s chicken. This is the turkey. (Sets down a huge turkey.)
Joey: Oh. How-how big is that?
Monica: About nineteen pounds.
Joey: It’s like me when I was born.
Rachel: All right, who would uh, like some yams? Will?
Will: Oh, you’d like that wouldn’t ya?
Rachel: What? Oh y’know what? Can we please keep the chicken and the turkey and everything on the other side of the table? The smell is just yuck!
Will: Typical.
Rachel: I’m sorry. What?
Will: I said it was typical. Typical of you, Rachel Green, Queen Rachel does whatever she wants in little Rachel land.
Joey: Seriously, who is this guy?
Rachel: Umm, I’m sorry. Do you-do you have a problem with me?
Will: I don’t know? Do I? Do I?
Phoebe: I think you do.
Monica: Apparently you were umm, a little mean to him in high school.
Will: A little mean? You made my life miserable!
Rachel: I’m, I’m, I had no idea. I’m sorry. I…
Will: Well you should be. Screw it! Bring on the yams!
Monica: Oh Will. But you-you’ve worked so hard…
Will: Yams!
Monica: Okay.
Rachel: Uh, Will umm, I just want to say that I’m real sorry for whatever I-I did to you in high school…
Will: Oh, it wasn’t just me. We had a club!
Rachel: You had a club?!
Will: That’s right, The I Hate Rachel Green Club!
Rachel: Whoa! My God! So what, you all just joined together to hate me?! Who else was in this club?
Will: Me and Ross.
Ross: No need to point, she knows who Ross is.

Rachel: So you were in an I Hate Rachel club?
Will: Yes he was.
Ross: No. No.
Rachel: So who else was in this club?
Ross: Uh, actually, there-there was also that exchange student from Thailand but I, I don’t think he-he knew what it was.
Rachel: So Ross, we went out for two years, and you never told me you were in an I Hate Rachel club.
Will: You went out with her?! We had a pact!
Ross: That was in high school! It’s not like it was binding forever.
Will: Then why did it have the word eternity in it?
Rachel: Okay Monica, did you know about this?!
Monica: I swear I didn’t. Hey! Is that why you guys used to go up to your bedroom and lock the door?
Ross and Will: Yeah.
Monica: Hmm, a little relieved, I gotta say.
Ross: Look Rach I-I’m sorry, okay? I…I was a stupid kid, okay? The only reason I joined…
Will: Co-founded!
Ross: …co-founded. Co-founded the club was because I was insanely in love with you. Obviously I didn’t handle it very well. But if you think about it the I Hate Rachel Club was really the I Love Rachel Club.
Will: Uh, except that it was really the I Hate Rachel Club.
Rachel: Okay. So what? You guys would just like get together and like just say mean things about me?
Will: Well, we did a little more than that.
Ross: No-no! No-no. No-no.
Phoebe: What?! What else did you do?
Will: We started a rumor.
Rachel: What rumor?
Phoebe: Oh, come on Will! Just take off your shirt and tell us!
Rachel: Ross!
Ross: It was no big deal. We-we…said that the rumor was…that umm…you had both…male and female reproductive parts.
Rachel: What?!
Will: That’s right! We said your parents flipped a coin, decided to raise you as a girl, but you still had a hint of a penis.
Rachel: Oh my God!
Monica: You started that?!
Rachel: What?! You heard that?!
Monica: Everyone at our school heard it!
Chandler: Everybody at my school heard it! You were the hermaphrodite cheerleader from Long Island?!
Rachel: Oh no!!!! Oh my God!! This is all making so much sense to me now! This is why Adam Carter wouldn’t go out with me! This is why Billy Tratt would just stay in this region!
Ross: Actually, Billy Tratt is gay now. So-so that one’s not really our fault.
Rachel: Monica, how come you never told me this?!
Monica: I thought it might be true. And I was afraid that you were gonna cry and then show it to me.
Rachel: Joey stop staring! There’s nothing there! It’s not true!
Joey: I’m afraid I’m gonna need proof.
Rachel: Oh!

Joey: You are my Everest.
Monica: Joey, you don’t have to finish that.
Joey: Oh yes I do. Otherwise what’s next? Today I’m just a guy who can’t finish a turkey, but tomorrow I’m the guy who eats half a Powerbar, wraps up the rest, and puts in the fridge? No! No, I just…I just—I gotta change my pants. Jeans have no give.
Rachel: Okay! Okay! Listen to what Sean McMahon wrote in my yearbook senior year, “Dear Rach, you’re such a good person.” Not girl! Person!
Ross: Rach, I think you’re reading a little too much into it.
Rachel: “Dear Rach, you’re a great person. Sorry about your tiney-wienie.”
Ross: Look, what do you want me to do? Do you want me to call everyone in the entire school and tell them it wasn’t true?!
Rachel: Yes!
Will: Could you also tell them I’m skinny now?
Monica: Oh! Me too!
Ross: Well look-look I’m not calling anybody! Okay? It was like a million years ago!
Rachel: I don’t care how long ago it was! You told people that I was half and half! Y’know what? I just want to point out I never did anything to hurt you in high school.
Monica: That’s not totally true.
Rachel: What?
Ross: What?
Monica: Well you-you did start that rumor about Ross making out with Mrs. Altman, our 50-year-old librarian.
Ross: How did you know that?!
Monica: It’s true?!!
Ross: No.
Rachel: Yes it is! I saw you guys going at it behind the card catalog!
Will: Mrs. Altman? She also made out with Takaka Ci-Kek the night before he went back to Thailand.
Chandler: I’m sorry. When you were in high school you made out with a 50-year-old woman?
Ross: Hey! She didn’t look 50!
Chandler: Did she look 16?
Rachel: Ohh, there’s a picture of her in the yearbook actually.
Phoebe: Oh! Wow!
Ross: She didn’t photograph well!
Chandler: Well, she probably wasn’t familiar with the process having spent most of her life sitting for oil paintings!
Phoebe: So how did this happen? Did she, did she lure you to an early bird dinner?
Ross: I was working late in the library one afternoon. It was just the two of us. She needed some help with her word jumble. And one thing led to another. If you must know, Anita was very gentle and tender. May she rest in peace…
Monica: Didn’t she walk with a cane?
Ross: Only when it was damp! I can’t believe you-you told people about this?! Everybody knew? Y’know what? I’m back in the club!
Will: Yeah!
Phoebe: I wanna join!
Rachel: Wh—Phoebe!
Phoebe: I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I never got to be in a club. I-I didn’t go to high school, but three of us would meet behind a dumpster to learn French. Bonjour.
Rachel: All right, y’know—Fine! You guys have your stupid little club, but I would just like to say is what you did to me is way worse than what I did to you! You gave me a tiney-wienie!
Monica: All right, listen you’re just being silly. Rachel, even with that rumor you were one of the most popular girls in school and everyone wanted to be like you. One girl wanted to be like you so much she stuffed her pants with a Tootsie Roll!
Rachel: Wow…
Monica: And Ross, if it weren’t for Rachel’s rumor I mean no one in high school would even know who you were. She put you on the map!
Ross: As a romancer of the elderly.
Monica: Hey! Mrs. Altman was the kind of woman you could tell she used to be pretty.
Ross: The eyes…did still sparkle.
Monica: Hey guys this stuff is just so way in the past. You-you’ve been through so much since then. And right now you’ve got so much more important stuff going on in your life. Can’t you just let this go?
Rachel: She’s right.
Ross: Yeah. I mean we are having a baby together.
Will: Hold on! You got her pregnant?
Ross: Yeah.
Will: Are ya getting married?
Ross: Nope.
Will: So you knocked her up but you’re not gonna marry her. Dude! Anybody?
Phoebe: Okay. It’s exactly how I’d imagined it would be.

How to make Eggnog? https://www.5percangol.hu/receptek/how_to_make_eggnog/ Mon, 23 Nov 2015 21:39:54 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/how_to_make_eggnog/ Az eggnog története igencsak szerteágazó.

Classic Eggnog

Ingredients:

  • 5 egg yolks (tojássárgája)
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream (tejszín)
  • 2 cups whole milk (zsíros tej)
  • 1¼ cups good quality bourbon or whiskey
  • ¼ cup spiced rum
  • pinch of salt (egy csipet só)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp nutmeg (szerecsendió) plus more for garnish (díszítésnek)

Instructions:

1.       Whisk (verd fel) yolks with sugar until creamy and sugar begins to dissolve (olvadni, felolvadni).

2.       Add cream, milk, bourbon and rum and stir (keverd) to combine (vegyít, vegyül).

3.       Stir in nutmeg and vanilla and chill well (hűtsd le jól).

4.       Serve chilled (hidegen tálald) on the rocks (jéggel) with a sprinkle of nutmeg (egy kis szórásnyi szerecsendióval) if desired (ha úgy kívánod).

Variation 1: Include the egg whites

To use the whites, reserve (tegyél félre) ¼ cup of the sugar. Beat egg whites (verd fel a tojásfehérjét) to soft peaks and then beat in sugar until stiff peaks form (amíg szilárd csúcsokat nem formáz). In a separate bowl, beat ½ cup heavy cream. Fold (óvatosan keverd bele) egg whites into cream and serve on top of eggnog with a sprinkle of nutmeg (egy szórásnyi szerecsendióval).

Variation 2: Cook the eggs

Making a danger-free (veszélytelen) eggnog is pretty easy too. Simply follow the same recipe above, but leave out the alcohol and mix only half the milk and cream into the blend (keverék), then heat the mixture in a glass or metal bowl over a pot of simmering water for about five or six minutes. Be sure to stir constantly (állandóan). Refrigerate until well chilled. When ready to serve, simply stir in (keverd bele) the remaining cream (a megmaradt tejszínt) and milk, as well as the bourbon and rum.

Variation 3: Virgin Eggnog

Follow the recipe as directed, omitting (kihagyva) the alcohol and adding (hozzáadva) an extra ¾ cup of whole milk, ¾ cup of cream and 1-2 tablespoons of rum extract (rumaroma) to the mix. Chill and serve.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Cooking Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
Oven Temperature: 180° c  –  360° f

Step 1:  You’ll need

  • 850 g pumpkin, chopped
  • 350 ml cream
  • 190 g brown sugar
  • Half tsp salt
  • 3 eggs and 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • quarter tsp nutmeg
  • quarter tsp allspice
  • the zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 short-crust pastry base , ready made
  • 1 roasting tin
  • 1 spoon
  • 1 fork
  • 1 pie mold
  • 1 jug
  • 1 hand blender
  • aluminium foil
  • parchment paper
  • about 500g of beans to weigh down the crust

Step 2: Preheat the oven

Set the temperature to 180ºC or gas mark 4.

Step 3: Roast the pumpkin

Tip the chopped pumpkin into the roasting tin and cover it tightly with aluminium foil. Put the tin on a low shelf in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes (this is the first stage of creating the pumpkin puree).

Step 4: Prepare the pastry base

Gently lay the pastry crust on the pie mold and carefully press it down to form the shape of the pie. Remove any excess pastry from the edges. Now using a fork, lightly jab the bottom of the base various times. This will prevent the pastry from rising.

Put the parchment paper over the top of the pastry and pour the beans on top to weigh it down.

Step 5: Bake the pastry

Place the pie mold in the oven with the pumpkin and bake for 20 minutes.

Step 6: Remove from the oven

When the pastry crust is golden brown, take it out of the oven. Test the pumpkin to see if it’s done by piercing it with a fork. It needs to be completely soft to make the puree. Remove it from the oven and discard the foil. Take the beans off the pastry and leave it and the pumpkin to cool.

Finally, raise the temperature of the oven to 210 degrees centigrade or gas mark 6.

Step 7: Make the pumpkin puree

Spoon the cooked pumpkin into the jug and using the hand blender, blend into a puree.

Step 8: Prepare the pie filling

In a large bowl mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, lemon zest and salt. Now, whisk the eggs, add them to the other ingredients and stir. Pour in the pumpkin puree and cream and stir well.

Step 9: Bake

Pour the filling into the pastry crust, almost to the top. Carefully place it into the centre of the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Lower the temperature to 160ºC and bake for a further 35 minutes.

Step 10: Remove from the oven

When the pie is fully cooked remove it from the oven and allow it to cool and set.

Step 11: Serve

The pie can be eaten warm or cold and served dusted with icing sugar and with a dollop of whipped cream.
