Több esetben is a határozott névelővel kellett kiegészítenetek a párbeszédet. De vajon miért is? Nézzük is meg, mikor kell használni és milyen jelentéssel bír ilyen esetekben a ’the’ határozott névelő az angol nyelvben.

Definite Article: THE

A ’the’ határozott névelőt egyes és többes számú főnevekkel is használhatod, mégpedig akkor, amikor egy konkrét vagy egyedi dologra vonatkozik.

There is a dog in the picture. – Van egy kutya a képen.

(Nem érdekes, hogy milyen, kié, stb. A lényeg az, hogy egy kutya, és nem egy macska.)

DE!

The dog in the picture is my dog, Pedro. –  A kutya a képen az én kutyám, Pedro.

(Itt konkrétan tudjuk melyik kutyáról van szó: egyrészt a képen lévő kutya, másrészt az én kutyám Pedro).

Nézzük akkor szépen sorban, hogy mikor kell, használni a ’THE’ határozott névelőt:

1.Ha valamiből csak 1 van és a felsőfokú melléknevek előtt

Which is the highest tower in the world? – Melyik a világ legmagasabb tornya?

(mivel legmagasabb csak 1 lehet, tehát felsőfokú melléknevek esetén)

The Earth goes round the Sun. –  A Föld kering a Nap körül.

(Mert a tudomány jelenlegi állása szerint, mind a két égitestből csak egy van…:)

Rome is the capital of Italy. – Róma Olaszország fővárosa.

(egy országnak is csak egy fővárosa van)          

I am going away at the end of this year. – Az év végén megyek el.

(az évnek is csak egy vége van)

2.Nem megszámlálható főnevek előtt, ha azok nem általában, hanem konkrétan vonatkoznak az adott dologra

Coffee is a popular drink. – A kávé népszerű ital.

The coffee in my cup is too hot to drink. – A kávé a csészémben túl forró ahhoz, hogy megigyam.

Japanese was his native language. – A japán volt az anyanyelve.

The Japanese he speaks is often heard in the countryside. – A japán nyelvet, amit beszél, gyakran hallani vidéken

Intelligence is difficult to quantify. – Az intelligenciát nehéz számszerűsíteni.

The intelligence of animals is variable but undeniable. – Az állatok intelligenciája változó, de tagadhatatlan.

3.mozik (the Odeon), szállodák (the Hilton), színházak (the Apollo),
múzeumok (the Prado), újságok/magazinok (The Sun, DE! Newsweek),
hajók (the Marie Celeste), intézmények (the RSPCA), galériák (the Tate Gallery) neve előtt

4.folyók (the Seine), tengerek (the Black Sea), szigetcsoportok (the Bahamas), államok (the United States of America), hegységrendszerek (the Alps), sivatagok (the Sahara), óceánok (the Atlantic Ocean), csatornák (the Suez Canal)

A könnyebb megjegyzés érdekében egy trükk:

minden víz elé kell, kivéve a tavakat (kell a folyók, tengerek, óceánok elé), illetve a többes számban lévő dolgok elé (szigetcsoportok, államok)

5.’of’– os szerkezetben lévő tulajdonnevek

the Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty

6.hangszerek és táncok neve előtt

play the piano, dance the tango

7.családnevek elé, ha az egész családra vonatkozik és a családnév többes számban van

the Browns (Brownék)

8.-sh, -ch, -ese-re végződő nemzetiségnevek előtt

the English, the Dutch, the Japanese

9.címek, méltóságok neve előtt

the Queen, the Prince

(DE! nem kell névelő, ha a nevét is hozzátesszük (Queen Victoria)

10.melléknevek előtt, ha azok egy embercsoportra vonatkoznak (a melléknév egyes számban van); minél-annál szerkezetben (the + középfokú melléknév, the + középfokú melléknév)

The more optimistic you are, the happier you will be. – Minél optimistább vagy, annál boldogabb leszel.

11.station, shop, cinema, pub, library, city, village szavak előtt

She went to the station to see Peter off. – Elment az állomásra, hogy kikísérje Petert.

12.napszakok előtt: morning, afternoon, evening

in the morning, in the evening, in the evening DE! at night

13.történelmi korok és események neve előtt

the Renaissance, the Second World War

14.only, last, first, same előtt

You are the only one. – Te vagy az egyetlen.

You are the first/last in the class. – Te vagy az első/utolsó az osztályban.

This is exactly the same as the old one. – Ez pontosan ugyanaz, mint a régi.

15.’az a bizonyos’ jelentéssel
The Hanks? – Az a bizonyos Hanks? (Tom Hanks)

That’s the one. – Igen, az (a bizonyos film).
