Shot on a budget of $3.5 million, David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker wrote and directed Airplane!, a movie intended to parody the onslaught of disaster movies that graced movie theater screens in the 1970s. Shorewood, Wisconsin childhood friends Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker grew up and moved to Los Angeles, where they were responsible for the sketch comedy troupe Kentucky Fried Theater. The trio made a habit of recording late-night television, looking for commercials to make fun of for their video and film parodies, which is how they discovered Zero Hour!, which also featured a protagonist named Ted Stryker (in Airplane! it’s Ted Striker). In order to make sure the camera angles and lighting on Airplane! were matching those of Zero Hour!, the trio always had the movie queued up on set. Yes, the three filmmakers did buy the rights to their semi source material.

2. UNIVERSAL THOUGHT AIRPLANE! WAS TOO SIMILAR TO THEIR AIRPORT FRANCHISE.

Universal released four plane disaster movies in the seventies: Airport in 1970; Airport 1975 (confusingly in 1974); Airport ‘77; and The Concorde … Airport ‘79. Helen Reddy portrayed Sister Ruth in Airport 1975 and was game to play Sister Angelina in Airplane! before Universal stepped in and threatened to sue. Instead, the role went to Maureen McGovern, who sang the Oscar-winning theme songs to The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno—two movies that were also “disaster” movies, albeit ones not involving a plane.

The Directors Guild of America ruled that Abrahams and the two Zuckers couldn’t all be credited for directing a movie, nor be credited under the single “fictitious name of Abrahams N. Zuckers.” A DGA rep was on set to make sure that only Jerry Zucker spoke to the actors. What he saw was Jerry Zucker next to the camera, who would then go to a nearby trailer where the other two were watching the takes on a video feed, and come back to give notes to the actors after conferring with his partners. A DGA executive board eventually gave the three one-time rights to all share the credit.

8. ROBERT HAYS WAS STARRING IN A TV SHOW AT THE SAME TIME HE WAS FILMING AIRPLANE!

Robert Hays, the actor who played Ted Striker, had to race back and forth between the sets of Angie and Airplane! for two very busy weeks. The theme song to Angie was performed by the one and only Maureen McGovern. Robert Hays was and is a licensed pilot. He can even fly the ones with four engines.

9. LESLIE NIELSEN HAD A LOT OF FUN WITH HIS FART MACHINE.

Leslie Nielsen sold portable fart machines for $7 apiece on set, causing a brief epidemic of fart noises emanating from most of the cast and crew and delaying production. When they were shooting Hays’s close-up, Nielsen used the machine after every other word of his line, “Mr. Striker, can you land this plane?”

10. THE ORIGINAL ROUGH CUT OF AIRPLANE! WAS 115 MINUTES LONG.

The novel concept was one of several ideas suggested by four-year-old Amber Winters, from Birmingham, the winner of the airline’s  #Nameourplane competition. Children between the ages of four and 11 were asked to suggest a name for Thomson’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, as well as ways the airline could improve its services for young passengers.

Her suggestions included a kids’ area with bean bags and a reading corner at the back of the aircraft.

The finalists from Thomson’s #Nameourplane competition who were also asked to suggest ways it could improve its services to better cater to children.

Amber, whose winning name for the aircraft was Pixie Dust, was joined by nine other finalists for an Ambassador Day event at Gatwick Airport, where they were given a chance to present all of their ideas to a panel of judges and a tour of the new Dreamliner by Thomson Airways pilot Stuart Gruber.

“All of our finalists had some fantastic ideas, so it was a really hard decision selecting our overall winner,” Mr Gruber said.

“We’re looking forward to trialling some of Amber’s suggestions on board the new aircraft,” he added.

Other ideas for ways to improve kids’ in-flight experience included more video game and film offerings as well as unlimited chocolate and sweets, suggested by more than 40 per cent of the children surveyed for the competition. The same amount wanted free toys on board, while around a quarter of them suggested both an arts and crafts area and a soft play area. One in 10 said they’d love to see the cabin crew in fancy dress during the flight.

Other ambitious suggestions included an on-board slide (suggested by 18 per cent), a football pitch (10 per cent) a dress-up/make-up play room (nine per cent) and a skate park (seven per cent).

The survey also revealed children’s biggest bugbears on a flight which included being stuck in their seat, being bored, and their ears hurting on the plane.

“This is your captain speaking”, is a commonly heard refrain by air travellers, but beyond the flight time, weather and comments about the seatbelt sign, pilots are not known for being too chatty. But what would the controller in the cockpit say if given the chance?

We forgot about the seatbelt sign 
“When you look up at the sign (and disregard it typically) and it has been illuminated for the last 45 minutes in smooth air, we simply forgot,” said a pilot for a major US airline, commenting anonymously. Some pilots leave it on for an entire flight, while others will leave it on for an extended period if they have reports of choppy weather ahead.

Do not drink the coffee
The same anonymous pilot advised passengers to steer clear of the brown stuff onboard. “The potable water the aircraft is serviced with is absolutely disgusting,” he said. “Chemicals are inserted into the water tanks to prevent bad things from growing, but the bad taste of the coffee isn’t the coffee – it’s the chemicals.”

Turbulence is not that big a deal
While pilots will always have you buckle your seatbelt for safety, most pilots don’t worry about a few bumps. “Most crashes happen during takeoff or landing,” said Quora member Joe Torres “You can compare it to a speedboat travelling over water: the boat bounces as it goes over choppy water. Your plane isn’t going to ‘fall’ out of the sky when it hits choppy air.”

Air traffic control delays are not air traffic control’s fault 
FAA traffic control specialist Paul Cox weighed in, placing the blame on airlines for over scheduling. “A standard, one-runway airport with well-designed taxiways can safely handle, in good weather, around 60 operations an hour – one per minute,” Cox said. Delays happen when bad weather shows up and “they can only land 30 planes per hour”, delaying the other 30. Instead of scheduling for bad weather days, airlines pack as many flights in as they can.

We get paid less than you think 
The anonymous pilot and a few other users mentioned the bare bones salary that most starting pilots receive. “While they carry immense responsibility for countless lives annually and have advanced training, they typically earn less than a preschool teacher,” said user David Carpe. The anonymous pilot confirmed, saying it was typical for a regional airline first officer to make no more than $16,000 in their first year on the job.

Thomson Airways to launch child-free zones, family booths and pods for couples

If Thomson Airways get their way, the days of flying to the crying of an  infant could soon be over.

The world’s largest charter airline announced it is to launch family booths, pods for couples and child-free zones in an effort to rebrand itself as the ‘holiday airline’. The airline, which takes five million Brits abroad each year, have said the new ‘innovative’ measures will make the journey part of the holiday experience.

Children can be sent off to the on-board kids’ club, where a trained member of staff will entertain them with arts and craft activities and quizzes that relate to their destination.

And David Burling, boss of parent firm TUI UK & Ireland, said he wants the company to ‘define and lead’ a new category of flying. ‘Our overall goal is to make travel experiences special and, as the flight marks the start and end of the holiday, we see it as an integral part of the whole holiday experience,’ he said.

Thomson Airways’ customer service chief Carl Gissing added: ‘We’ve also asked our customers what they want from a holiday airline to ensure we’re really adding value to their overall experience. Their insight and feedback has helped us develop many of the innovative new concepts.’

Most of the changes are likely to be introduced as the airline’s new 47-strong fleet of Boeing 737 MAX jets is delivered from 2018, though family and child-free zones could come as soon as next summer.

Waste from aeroplanes is held in a tank until the aircraft lands. It is physically impossible for the pilot to empty the tank while the plane is in the air. People regularly report having waste fall on them, but it almost always turns out to be bird droppings.

2. You can get stuck on a plane toilet if you flush while sitting down: MOSTLY MYTH

It is possible to get stuck on a toilet if your body forms a perfect seal on the toilet seat. However, this is very difficult to do.

3. Oxygen masks get you high: MYTH

 A promo video sees a variety of passengers telling Father Christmas their dream gift. With their wishes made, the footage shows them merrily taking their place on the aircrafts. As they relax onboard, the video then flicks to behind-the-scenes shots of WestJet elves rushing out to buy the wished-for gifts. When the flyers touch down in Calgary, they mill around the seasonally decorated baggage claim hall — and are shocked when their presents, instead of suitcases, arrive on the carousel. A boy gets super excited as he unwraps a brand new Android tablet, while a family can’t stop grinning as they open up a big-screen TV. One man clearly wishes he had asked for more, however, when he opens up a small package containing just socks and underwear.

 Some have claimed the "Christmas Miracle" campaign is just a cynical marketing stunt.
But WestJet spokesman Richard Bartrem defended the project. "This year, we wanted to turn our holiday campaign into a tradition by doing something that’s never been done before," he said. "We wanted to surprise our guests with meaningful, personalized gifts when they least expected them," he told Fox News. "Being able to show our guests how much we care with gift-giving, a tried and true holiday tradition, resonates with WestJetters as much as our guests," he added. Airline bosses also promised to donate flights to families in need through the Ronald McDonald House Charities if 200,000 people watched the video. So far, the clip has been seen more than 6 million times.

Egy utas, aki egy Örményországba tartó repülőgép fedélzetén hozta világra gyermekét, azután a légikisasszony után nevezte el gyermekét, aki a szülésnél segített neki. A helyi média szerint, a repülőgép éppen elhagyta Oroszországot amikor a kislány megszületett. Állítólag, a nő Haszmik-nak nevezte el lányát a szülésnél segítkező légikisasszony után, akit Haszmik Ghevondyan-nak hívnak. A repülő két órára volt a leszállástól amikor a kis Haszmik úgy döntött, hogy csatlakozik a fedélzeten. Ghevondyan kisasszony azt mondta, hogy észrevette, hogy a 31 éves utasnak, Armina Babayan-nak, szülési fájdalmai vannak, és ennek megfelelően cselekedett. “Az egész személyzet segített a szülésnél,” mondta a légikisasszony.  Az örmény Armavia járat Jerevánban szállt le. Mind az anya, mind a gyermeke jól vannak.

1ST CABIN STAFF “Welcome aboard, and thanks for flying with us. We’re committed to making your flight safe and comfortable, so before we depart we’ll be showing a brief safety presentation. This information can help you if there’s an emergency, so it’s important to pay close attention, even if you are a frequent flyer.”

FLIGHT ATTENDANT: “All carry on items should now be stored securely, either in an overhead bin, or under the seat in front of you. And all aisles, exits and bulkhead areas, should be clear. Your mobile phones and other electronic devices should be turned, off. Once airborne, we’ll let you know when you can use approved electronic devices. But note that some items, such as phones may not be used in flight at any time. You’ll find a list of approved electronic devices in the in-flight information section of Sky magazine. If you’re seated at an emergency exit, please review the responsibilities for emergency exit seating on the back of the safety information card, which is in your seat pocket”.

2ND FLIGHT ATTENDANT: “Are you okay sitting by the emergency exits?”

FLIGHT ATTENDANT: “If you’re unable or prefer not to perform these functions, just let us know and we’d be happy to find you another seat. As we leave the gate, make sure your seatbelt is fastened. To fasten, insert the metal tip into the buckle and adjust the strap so it’s low and tight across your lap. To release the belt just lift the top of the buckle or press the latch to release. Please remain seated with your seatbelt securely fastened, any time the seatbelt sign is on. And even if the sign is off, you should keep your seatbelt fastened in case we experience unexpected rough air. For everyone’s safety, federal regulations require all passengers to comply with the posted placards and lighted signs located throughout the cabin, as well as any crew member instructions.

2ND FLIGHT ATTENDANT: “You cannot smoke, I’m so sorry.”

FLIGHT ATTENDANT: Smoking is not allowed on any Delta flight. And federal law prohibits tampering with, disabling or destroying the Rest Room smoke detector. There are six exits on this plane, four doors, two on each side and two window exits over the wing. Each door has a detachable slide that can be used for flotation. Life rafts are located in the ceiling compartments at the front and centre of the plane. All exits are clearly marked, with an exit sign. However, if there is a loss of power and cabin visibility is reduced, the white emergency lights near the floor will lead you to red lights which indicate an exit. Please take a moment to find the exits closest to you, and remember they might be behind you. It’s unlikely, but if cabin pressure changes, the panels above your seat will open, revealing oxygen masks. If this happens, reach up and pull the mask towards you until the tube is fully extended. Place the mask over your nose and mouth, slip the elastic strap over your head and adjust the mask if necessary. Breathe normally and know that oxygen is flowing, so don’t worry if the bag doesn’t inflate. Be sure to adjust your own mask before helping others. A water evacuation is also unlikely but just in case life vests are located under your seats in the economy cabin. If you’re seated in the first or business class cabin the life vests are either between your seats, under your seats or in a compartment under your arm rest. To use, pull the tab to remove the vest from its container, and then open the pouch. Slip the vest over your head, fasten the two straps to the front of the vest and then adjust the straps loosely around your waist. If your vest has only one strap, wrap it around your waist and attach it to the buckle in front. As you leave the plane, inflate the vest by pulling down on the red tabs at the bottom of the vest. Or, manually inflate it, by blowing into the tubes at shoulder level. You can activate a light by pulling down on the tab in front. If your vest doesn’t have a tab, the light will activate automatically in the water. If necessary, we’ll distribute infant life vests or other flotation devices for children who weigh 35 pounds or less. Also, most seat cushions can be used for flotation. Now, before we take off, be sure your seat is upright and locked, your tray table is put away and all carry-on items are properly stowed. As we come through the cabin for our final safety checks, please let us know if you have any questions. And finally, now would be a good time for everyone to review the safety information card which is in your seat pocket.
