Perfect Match: Brazilian Kids Learn English by Video Chatting With Lonely Elderly Americans

It’s such a great, simple idea: young Brazilians want to learn English. Elderly Americans living in retirement homes just want someone to talk to. Why not connect them? FCB Brazil did just that with its "Speaking Exchange" project for CNA language schools. As seen in the touching case study below, the young Brazilians and older Americans connect via Web chats, and they not only begin to share a language—they develop relationships that enrich both sides culturally and emotionally.

The differences in age and background combine to make the interactions remarkable to watch. And the participants clearly grow close to one another, to the point where they end up speaking from the heart in a more universal language than English. The pilot project was implemented at a CNA school in Liberdade, Brazil, and the Windsor Park Retirement Community in Chicago. The conversations are recorded and uploaded as private YouTube videos for the teachers to evaluate the students’ development.

"The idea is simple and it’s a win-win proposition for both the students and the American senior citizens. It’s exciting to see their reactions and contentment. It truly benefits both sides," says Joanna Monteiro, executive creative director at FCB Brazil.

Obese schoolgirl loses SIX STONE to battle for Junior Olympics swimming gold

A schoolgirl shed six stone (38 kg) to go from clinically obese to junior Olympic athlete. Breanna Bond, 11, weighed 14 stone (89 kg) and her weight made her a target for bullies. Just 14 months ago her mum Heidi decided it was time for Breanna, from California, to get fighting fit.

Now after a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, eight stone (51 kg) Breanna has her sights set on gold at the Junior Olympic Games. Breanna wants to be a triathlete and cheerleader and has already qualified for the 500-yard freestyle swimming competition at the Junior Olympic Games. She said: "I feel like I can move more in sports now and it’s a lot easier for me in cheerleading and cross country. I can just go faster."

Breanna was just two years old when mum Heidi noticed her daughter was gaining weight faster than children her own age. By the age of nine, she was so large she was being bullied at school. Heidi said: "I thought maybe it could have been a thyroid issue, maybe some kind of genetic disorder.” In the end though Heidi realised good old Southern fried cooking was to blame. She said: "We would make fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and chicken fried steak."

They have now launched a website dedicated to Breanna’s weight-loss journey to inspire other children who are overweight. Heidi explained: "It’s an inspirational site to help encourage other children everywhere to get motivated, to exercise and to lose the weight."

The perpetual puppy: New breed of dog ‘never grows old’

This dog could be a little long in the tooth, but you’d never know it looking at its baby-faced appearance. Even when it’s fully-grown, the cava-poo-chon still looks like a puppy – and it’s the latest in the current trend for small pets.

Bred by Arizona-based Linda and Steve Rogers, the cava-poo-chon is a cavalier King Charles spaniel and bichon frise mix bred with a miniature poodle. The pair enlisted the help of a geneticist and reproductive veterinarian to develop the ‘tribrid’ – or triple cross. According to Ms Rogers, cava-poo-chon combines the best of the three breeds and are offered with a choice of colour and two types of coat: curly or very curly.

The dog’s small stature means it will never lose its youthful looks and Linda says there is no reason why the dogs can’t enjoy a 20-year lifespan. However, the American Kennel Club refuses to recognise the cava-poo-chon as an official breed, with one expert describing some specially-bred small dogs as expensive ‘gimmicks’.

Dog trainer Steve Haynes, who is working with 50 first-generation cava-poo-chons, said: ‘There’s always been a market for these forever-ish young dogs. Until recently, specialised dogs like miniature Yorkies and miniature Maltese were the go-to dogs.’ With such a specialised range of ‘features’, it is perhaps unsurprising the cava-poo-chon comes with a hefty price tag. If you want one it will set you back between $2,000 (£1,237) and $3,500 (£2,165).

‘Mum thinks I’m a pillock’: Teenager went for drunken night out in Oldham… and woke up in a toilet in PARIS

A teenager who went out clubbing in Manchester with his mates woke up in Paris the following morning after booking a flight in the early hours. Luke Harding was getting a cab home from the Tokyo Project nightclub, nicknamed Tokes, in Oldham when he found his passport in his pocket and drunkenly decided to visit the Eiffel Tower.

Mr Harding, a sheet metal worker, asked the shocked taxi driver to head immediately for Manchester Airport then booked a last minute 6am flight for £100 through Flybe to the French capital using his mobile phone. The 19-year-old eventually woke up in a toilet cubicle at Charles De Gaulle Airport – 500 miles (800 km) from where he started his night to remember.

Pals nursing a giant hangover from a night out at the club were stunned to see a sheepish Luke had tweeted a picture of himself standing next to the Eiffel Tower and then another with the caption: ‘Sat outside the Arc De Triumph (sic) eating a croissant.’ News of his unexpected excursion spread like wildfire around the social media site with many messages poking fun at the travelling teenager.

In a series of tweets from Paris, Luke said: ‘Only woke up in the toilets of Charles de Gaulle airport an hour ago and half of Oldham know haha.’ He added: ‘I got in a taxi to Manchester airport and booked a flight on my phone! Don’t remember the flight. It’s f***ing expensive here though. Mum thinks I’m a pillock. Walked past the Eiffel Tower 3 times! Not a clue where I am!’

He was eventually picked up 12 hours later at Manchester by friends when he had to pay out a further £170 to get a flight back to the UK. The entire escapade cost him a total of £300.

Slovakian woman, 39, amasses world record-breaking collection of 62,500 napkins that could be worth £300,000

A woman’s £300,000 collection of napkins has made her a record-breaker for the fourth time. Antonia Kozakova has amassed 62,757 individual designs, which she keeps piled up in her office. The Slovakian has taken 16 years to create her collection – that includes examples from countries all over the world.

The 39-year-old first set the world record in 2007 when her collection hit 21,000. Since then, she’s broken her own record twice more – in 2008 with 30,300 napkins and again in 2008 with 50,000. Now the collection has almost reached the 63,000 mark, Mrs Kozakova has once again become a record-breaker.

The eclectic collection, thought to be worth in the region of £300,000, includes one tiny napkin that is just two-inches (5 cm) long, while the largest design stretches to almost four ft (120 cm). One of the eldest designs dates back to the 1940s. Other quirky designs include a replica British 50 pound note and one that features the faces and signatures of Beatles stars Ringo Starr and John Lennon.

Mrs Kozakova said: ‘My collection is totally unique. There are no duplicate pieces.’ As her collection becomes more high-profile, Mr Kozakova says residents of her local village in Ruska as well as fans from across the rest of the world send her unusual napkins. She said: ‘I receive napkins from the postman, from the local shopkeeper and anyone else who passes through the village and know about my serious hobby.’

Mrs Kozakova says she has no plans to stop collecting and already has her sights on reaching 100,000. She added: ‘I want to have a napkin with my face and name on it. And I’m still looking for one signed by my favourite actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.’
