Monday morning in the office

K: Hi Liza, you look a bit tired. How was your weekend? Didn’t you have time to relax?

L: Well, Kyle, I must say I didn’t. Not much, at least.

K: How come? You didn’t work, did you?

L: No, that is, not in the office. But I had to clean the house on Saturday morning because it was a complete mess.

K: But that’s something you do every week, don’t you?

L: Not really. I know I should but I don’t like doing it. Now I had to do it because a few friends came to visit in the afternoon and I had to do some cooking before that, too.

K: I suppose you baked some cakes as well. Your cakes are really delicious and I know you enjoy making them.

L. Actually, I did that on Friday evening already. And I know you like them so I saved some for you. Help yourself!

K: Thanks!

L: And then we went to the theatre in the evening so that was a busy day.

K: And on Sunday? You didn’t have guests then, did you?

L: No but I went hiking in the hills with my cousins in the morning. We had been planning that for long. The weather was just beautiful though there was a bit of rain in the morning it cleared up later so we enjoyed the hike. After that, in the afternoon I had to rush to pick up my mother at the airport. She just came back from a holiday.

K: And in the evening? Theatre again? I could imagine you going to the theatre every evening.

L: No, my brother came over and we watched a football match together.

K: I didn’t know you like football.

L: I do. Especially when my favourite team plays. You can join us next week.

K: Thanks for the invitation. I’ll think it over.

After the war she was determined to show the world what she was made of. An injury kept her out of the Olympics in 1948. But she persisted. In 1952 she finally competed in the Olympics in Helsinki – and brought home four medals. But she wasn’t done yet. In 1956, 35-year-old Ágnes Keleti competed in the Melbourne Olympics. She brought home four gold medals becoming the oldest gymnast to win gold. She moved to Israel where she coached generations of gymnasts. The 96-year-old has just been awarded the Israel Prize in Sport and Physical Culture (The Nobel Prize of Israel). Strength, flexibility, courage. We all have a lot to learn from Ágnes Keleti.

Going to the gym

M: Hi Mary, I haven’t seen you for ages. You look great. You’re really in good shape. What do you do to keep fit?
W: Well Bob, I go to a gym as often as I can. I can’t be there every day but I go at least four times a week. I work out. I lift weights and run on the treadmill and a lot of other things.
M: I don’t remember you being so athletic in school.
W: Well, your memory is excellent. I wasn’t.
M: Then what happened? Did a friend take you to a gym?
W: Not really, actually, it was my own decision. You know, when after my 40th birthday I found that I weigh 180 pounds and I couldn’t lose weight through different diet plans I started to hate myself for it. And I just walked into a local gym and asked for help. I began lifting weights with the owner of the gym. It was really hard first, much harder than when I was 20. Then I began doing team workouts and added spinning. I’ve been doing it for more than a year now and have lost nearly 30 pounds.
M: Great. Good for you. I have never set foot in a gym. I go swimming twice a week and I love it. But I’m not very happy about my weight. I keep some rules, like no meals after six in the evening but I still weigh much more than I used to. I hate looking in the mirror and standing on scales and seeing those numbers again.
W: You could join me in the gym. I can show you things and help you with the exercise. Why don’t you give it a try?
M: Well, I can give you a lot of reasons why not…
W: Come on, it won’ hurt.
M: I’m afraid, it will. But you know what? I’ll go with you and check it out. When are you going next time?
W: Thursday afternoon, at 5. I’ll give you the address. See you there. And don’t chicken out. It will be fun!

The Lost Ball

One evening we were playing football with my cousin, Jack, in their garden and the ball went over into the neighbour’s garden. Though we were scared, we went to his door, rang the bell and asked him if he could give us our ball back. “No,” he said angrily “You always kick the ball into my garden. I have enough of it.” We felt helpless. Suddenly, I had an idea. There was a cherry tree behind the house. I looked at it and told Jack “Look at this. We can climb the tree and jump over the fence.” He was a bit afraid “It’s too dark now, we can’t climb now. Let’s do it tomorrow” he suggested.

So the next day we went to the tree early. “Who will climb first?” asked Jack. “You,” I said. He agreed and climbed up the tree and then down into the neighbour’s garden. I followed him and then we were looking under the tree for the ball but we couldn’t find it. “Look, the door of the cellar is open. Maybe the ball has gone down there.” We carefully climbed down the stairs and tried to look around in the dark. We spent a few minutes there and we wanted to give up the search when I looked under a small cupboard and there was the lost ball. But along with the ball was a … gold bar! We quickly took both the ball and the gold bar and ran up the stairs and climbed up the tree again. When we reached our house the TV was on. It was news time. I couldn’t believe my ears when it said that 20 gold bars were stolen from a gold shop. They showed a picture of the gold bars and it was exactly like the one we had found. We quickly told the story to Jack’s mother and she called the police. The police came at once and found the rest of the gold bars in the neighbour’s cellar.

The following day the police inspector came and told us “Thank you, children, for catching the thief. Here is a reward for all of you.”

Mit csinálnak a britek karácsonykor? https://www.5percangol.hu/nyelvvizsga_olvasmanyok/celebrating_christmas_brit_us_hun/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=celebrating_christmas_brit_us_hun Sat, 21 Dec 2019 08:51:12 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/celebrating_christmas_brit_us_hun/ Celebrating Christmas

Christmas, which is celebrated on December 25, is one of the biggest celebrations of the year in many countries around the world. Christmas is a very important day for the members of the Christian religion because it commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. At church services around the world, people retell the story of the birth of Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem. In many countries the Christmas season actually lasts for almost a month. Streets, squares, homes and shops are decorated and illuminated everywhere.

Many of the traditional Christmas customs originate in pagan festivals. Thousands of years ago people were often afraid of the long, cold winter nights. When the days finally became longer, people celebrated the return of the sun by making bonfires, feasting on large meals and exchanging gifts. After the birth of Christ, many of these traditions were combined with the celebration of Christmas.

The word Christmas, itself, comes from the Old English name ‘Cristes Maesse’. The first recorded observance occurred in Rome in AD360, but it wasn’t until AD440 that the Christian Church fixed a celebration date of 25 December.

Christmas in Britain

Most people are on holiday in the UK and stay at home with their families on Christmas day, the main day for Christmas celebrations in Britain, when the family members gather to have a Christmas dinner at midday. During the weeks before Christmas, people send cards and go to Carol services and put up Christmas decorations in their homes. There is one very British Christmas ritual, which is watching the Queen’s message on TV. The tradition began in 1932 when King George V read a special speech written by Rudyard Kipling. The broadcast was an enormous success. Queen Elizabeth II continues the tradition to this day. Every year she broadcasts her message on Christmas Day, and it is heard by millions of people all over the world. In England most people watch or listen to it after their Christmas Dinner!

Pulling a Christmas cracker is also a popular British tradition. But what is a Christmas cracker? Christmas crackers are tubes made of brightly coloured paper. When pulled apart, it makes a pop sound. Crackers usually contain a small gift, a paper hat and a joke. Crackers are famous for their very bad jokes! The party hats look like crowns, similar to the ones worn by the Wise Men. There is normally a cracker next to each plate on the Christmas dinner table.

Christmas in the United States

Just like in the UK, Christmas in the USA is observed on the 25th of December. Here the festive season begins on the fourth Thursday in November, just after the Thanksgiving holiday. Christmas Eve in the USA is not an official holiday, which means that most people have to work. However, many workplaces hold Christmas parties and celebrations. After dinner on Christmas Eve, children go to bed early but not before hanging up their stockings on the fireplace or the end of their bed to be filled with gifts by Santa Claus. On the following morning, children wake up to look for their presents in their stockings and under the Christmas tree.

Boxing Day

Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It is also a holiday in many other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. It is based on a long custom of giving gifts to poor people. It is usually celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day. In some countries the public holiday is moved to the next weekday if 26 December is a Saturday or Sunday. Boxing Day is an old custom going back to the Middle Ages

Christmas in Hungary

In Hungary the Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve. In addition to the usual decorations, Hungarians also put fondant candies on and under the tree. According to the Hungarian tradition, the Christmas presents are brought by baby Jesus, although some families (who belong to other religions or are atheists) follow the Santa Claus tradition, which was promoted also by the communist government that ruled until 1990. Typical Hungarian Christmas dishes include: fish soup or bouillon, stuffed cabbage, roast turkey with stuffing, and the famous poppy seed or walnut rolls, which is a traditional Hungarian pastry, mostly eaten during the winter holidays. It is basically a kind of sweet bread, known as ‘beigli’ in Hungary. During the last few decades other variants (such as chestnut, plum jam, prune, or even cocoa) have become popular, too.

The Color Psychology of Yellow

Some of the key characteristics that are often associated with the color yellow include:

Warmth: Yellow is often described as cheery and warm.

Difficult to read: Yellow is also the most tiring color to the eye because it reflects a high amount of light. Using yellow as a background on paper or computer monitors can be very tiring to the eye and can lead to blindness in extreme cases.

Frustration: Yellow can also create feelings of frustration and anger. While it is considered a cheerful color, people are more likely to get angry in yellow rooms and babies cry more in yellow rooms.

Attention-grabbing: Since yellow is the most visible color, it is also the most attention-getting color. It is bright and immediately grabs the eye. It can be used in small amount to draw attention, for example, on traffic signs.

Energetic: Yellow is often seen as being a high-energy color. It can seem fresh and intense. It is often used in situations and products that create feelings of excitement or energy.

Aggressive: Yellow can be an energetic color, but this intensity can also have a downside. Sometimes it seems very aggressive. In great quantities, people may become irritated or angry in a yellow environment.

For many people, yellow is a bright and cheerful color. Advertisers may use it to not only draw attention but also to create a feeling of happiness and joy.

A strange incident in the restaurant

Greg took his wife, Rosemary out to dinner to an expensive restaurant. It was a special occasion, they were celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary. They were enjoying the fine food when they noticed that an old man, who was sitting at the table next to them, eating his meal, was looking at them again and again.

“Do you know that guy?” Rosemary asked. “No, I don’t”, answered Greg. “I’m sure I haven’t seen him before either,” she said. “Why is he looking at us?” When the man smiled at them again, they smiled back politely because they didn’t want to hurt the old man. Then the man stood up and came over to their table. The couple looked at him in surprise. He told Rosemary that she looked just like his daughter, who died a few years ago in an accident and it would mean a lot for him if she said “Goodbye, Dad” when he left the restaurant.

Greg and Rosemary looked at each other and didn’t know what to say to this strange request. “I’m sorry to hear that,” said Greg. “That would mean a lot to me to hear that” added the man and told a few other things about his life to them. They listened politely and finally, Rosemary agreed. A few minutes later the old man stood up, put on his coat and went to the door. The couple smiled at him as he waved at them and Rosemary said “Goodbye, Dad” as he walked out the door.

When they finished the dessert and the waitress came with the bill Greg saw that it included a meal for a third person as well. He complained to her. “The bill includes your wife’s father’s dinner”, the waitress explained. “He said you would pay for that, too.”

Meeting in the rain

Man: What a terrible day!

Woman: Yes, the weather is really awful. It’s been raining for at least three hours.

Man: I wouldn’t mind a light rain. But it’s pouring.

Woman: And unfortunately, I have lost my umbrella. My clothes are all wet. I just wanted to do some shopping but now I have to wait here.

Man: I never carry an umbrella, by the way. I hate it. I prefer wearing a raincoat if there’s heavy rain.

Woman: And I was expecting to go for a walk in the park after a hard day’s work. But I don’t think I will.

Man: Why don’t we go to a concert tonight?

Woman: Why, what’s on?

Man: My favourite band, Freddy the Fish, has a concert tonight.

Woman: Freddy the Fish? I haven’t heard about them. Are they famous?

Man: Not really, but two of my friends play the guitar in it. They are young and very talented.

Woman: What kind of music do they play?

Man: Jazz-rock.

Woman: Not my favourite style.

Man: Come on, give it a try. They’re really good.

Woman: But I’m short of money. How much are the tickets?

Man: Don’t worry about that. I have an extra ticket. You’re my guest.

Woman: Seriously?

Man: Yes, of course. My friend can’t come along because of his exams. I wouldn’t like to go alone. It’s not fun. So you are actually doing me a favour.

Woman: Really? And when shall we meet?

Man: Can you be in front of the café at the old bridge at half past seven?

Woman: OK I’ll be there.
