Town where entire population is made up of beautiful young women makes appeal for single men

A town where the entire population is made up of young women has made an appeal for single men – but only those willing to live by female rules. Over 600 women make up the population of Noiva do Cordeiro, southeast Brazil – most aged between 20 and 35.

Although some are married with families, their husbands are made to work away from home, only being allowed to return at weekends. Sons are sent away when they reach 18 and no other men are permitted to live in the town, which sits in a remote valley 60 miles east of Belo Horizonte.

The settlement dates back to the 1890s, when a young woman and her family were excommunicated from the Catholic church after she was accused of adultery. Slowly more single women and mother-only families joined the community, and over the decades several attempts by men to intervene in their way of life made them adopt a strictly ‘no male’ policy.

Today, girl power rules in the rural town, with women in charge of every aspect of life – from farming to town planning and even religion. But while none of the residents of Noiva do Cordeiro would have it any other way, it has left them with just one problem. One of the women, Nelma Fernandes, 23, admits it’s impossible for the girls – renowned in the region as strikingly beautiful – to find a would-be spouse.

She said: "Here, the only men we single girls meet are either married or related to us, everyone is a cousin. I haven’t kissed a man for a long time. We all dream of falling in love and getting married. But we like living here and don’t want to have to leave the town to find a husband.”

The lack of eligible bachelors has now led the community’s many single young ladies for make an appeal for interested men – but only those willing to adapt to living in a women’s world. Ms Fernandes said: "We’d like to get to know men who would leave their own lives and come to be a part of ours. But first they need to agree to do what we say and live according to our rules."

Bristol giant water slide sees thrill-seekers soaked

Huge crowds have turned out to watch a succession of thrill-seekers hurtle down a giant water slide in Bristol. Some 360 people went head-first down the 90m slide on lilos with some choosing to complete their descent in fancy dress clothing. The slide in Park Street has been made with plastic sheets, hay bales, water and washing-up liquid.

Organiser Luke Jerram said: "We’ve got about 300 or 400 hay bales all in a line. It’s an extraordinary site." Ticket holders were picked from nearly 100,000 applicants. Mr Jerram added: "I wanted to close a road. If you look at photographs in the 1900s you see these beautiful empty streets with all the kids playing out. It’s an extraordinary thing and all that has been taken away. I’m happy to take over a street, and this slide is an architectural intervention really."

He was told by Bristol City Council on Thursday his "Park-and-Slide" could "definitely" go ahead. The project was first announced in March by the Bristol-based artist. Mr Jerram’s event is part of the Make Sunday Special programme where some streets are closed off in the city every Sunday over the summer months to make way for cultural and leisure events.

National Lottery launches appeal to find missing millionaires before deadline

Lottery players have been urged to check their tickets to see if they are one of eight potential millionaires yet to claim their prize. The mystery winners have until 11pm tonight to come forward and claim their winnings, the National Lottery said. The 100 UK Millionaires Raffle draw was held on July 26 last year, with each winner claiming £1million each. However, only 92 out of the lucky 100 picked up their prize.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: ‘Though the clock is ticking, there is still time for players to re-check their tickets and make 2014 a year to remember. We urge every player to check their bags, coat pockets, even down the back of the sofa and in their cupboards – the winning tickets could be tucked away in any of these places.’

Winners have 180 days to claim their prize after the draw is made before the money is given to charity.

Teenager paid £450 for Xbox One on eBay, got sent photo of one instead

A young father who paid £450 for what he thought was an Xbox One on eBay was sent a photo of the new console instead. Peter Clatworthy, 19, had saved up all year to buy the Microsoft console – which is now sold out – for his four-year-old son. But days after paying for the Day One edition of the games system he received a grainy photo of one in the post, which, to add insult to injury, the seller had written ‘thank you for your purchase’ on the back of.

When he went back to the listing, Mr Clatworthy realised it had advertised ‘Xbox One Fifa Day One Edition, Photo Brand New UK 2013′, despite featuring an image of the console and being listed under the ‘video games and consoles category’. The teenager, from Bilborough, Nottinghamshire, said he was ‘absolutely gutted’ despite being given a full refund from eBay, which said it would take action against the seller as misleading listings are not allowed.

‘I told my brother and he was crying with laughter, so were all of my mates, it is quite embarrassing,’ he said. ‘Even my mum said I was a bit stupid considering it said it was a photo on the listing.’ Mr Clatworthy added: ‘It has potentially ruined Christmas.’

Last week a company launched a new deodorant – that smells like BACON. Power Bacon deodorant comes with the tagline "For When You Sweat Like A Pig" and is said to feature a "meaty fresh" scent.

This Little Piggy … Received Dog Training

This little piggy went to market … in the middle of town with his dog trainer.

Crackling the mini pig raised eyebrows recently when he was taken for a stroll around St Kilda in Melbourne by his trainer. Going for walkies on a lead, the adorable porker is currently receiving training on how to behave around town from D.O.G.S of Vic trainer Sandra Boyle. According to owner Carlos Sala he bought Crackling because he "wanted something a bit different" for a pet. When she turned out to be shy with humans and animals, he wondered if training usually given to dogs would help.

Sandra says: "She was a very shy piglet who didn’t want to wear a harness or walk out the front door". However, thanks to regular training Crackling is now much more confident. Sandra adds: "People see her walking at heel and they think she’s a dog, then they realise she’s a pig. She’s like a puppy dog. She even knows where home is and she’ll start to pull on the lead and go straight to the front door".
