Engineer travels 60,000 miles across the world on £150 (60,000 HUF) 1984 Honda moped

Whether it’s the ferry to France or the plane to Spain, we all look forward to going on holiday. And Ed March can hardly wait for his next trip – Tierra del Fuego by moped.

The engineer’s 25-year-old Honda C90 is a machine better known for putt-putting through city traffic than hitting the open road. But he has every faith in the trusty G-reg bike to carry him to the foot of South America from a starting point 36,000km to the north in Alaska. After all, it’s taken him on several treks, including an eight-month journey from Malaysia to his home in Hartland, Devon. ‘It does 63.5 km to the litre and just does not go wrong,’ said the 27-year-old.

The intrepid explorer posted his bike to Malaysia in bits and rebuilt it after flying there in 2011. He has since ridden home from Mongolia, and through Germany and Finland to the Arctic Circle. Girlfriend Rachel Lasham, 29, is joining him on the American adventure on her own C90. She’ll discover there are advantages to globetrotting on a moped, Mr March said. ‘When you get to a border crossing nobody asks you for a bribe – they presume you don’t have any money.’

Egy bundás jóbarátot? Furniture might help make a living space comfortable, but nothing makes a house a home like a furry best friend. With that in mind, some Ikea stores are now featuring cardboard cutouts of adoptable dogs in their showrooms amid the furniture. The cutouts have tags on them with QR codes that shoppers can scan to learn more about the individual dogs.

The idea to display the pets inside the store started in Singapore as a collaboration between Ikea and two animal shelters. Together they formed the project Home for Hope. Now, an Ikea store in Tempe, Arizona, is joining in on the innovative plan to find homes for rescue animals.

"We thought it was a perfect way to show people what their home would look like with a pet in it," said Becky Blaine, Ikea Tempe’s marketing director. All of the six animals featured in cutouts at the store in Tempe have now been adopted from the Arizona Humane Society, and more cutouts will be exhibited in the store at the end of the month, according to the outlet. At least eight pups have been adopted in Singapore so far, according to the Home for Hope website.

But is there any room for clothes? Eccentric inventor builds his own electric suitcase on wheels

Dragging your suitcase through the airport or train station could become a thing of the past thanks to this new invention. Amateur inventor He Liangcai has created an electric suitcase, which not only transports your belongings, but allows the owner to sit on it and travel along at up to 19 km per hour. The reinforced suitcase, which weighs 6.8 kg, comes with a small battery and is able to carry two adults for a distance of up to 60 km on a full charge.

The piece of luggage consists of an electric scooter, which has a suitcase attached to it. The rider sits on top of the suitcase to reach over to the handlebars where the throttle, brakes and lights can be found. Mr He demonstrated how the baggage worked by riding on one of his suitcases from his home to Changsha train station in China’s central Hunan Province, around 11 kilometres away.

According to the Global Times, it took the inventor 10 years to develop the scooter, despite the fact he is a farmer by trade with little formal education. In 1999, he designed a car safety system, which earned him an award in the U.S. And when he forgot his luggage when travelling to America to collect the accolade, he came up with the idea for the suitcase.

Performing crocodile ‘injured by portly accountant’ in Russian circus accident

In a fight between a crocodile and an overweight accountant, there seems to be little doubt about who would win. But when the unlikely situation came to pass in Russia, it was the dangerous reptile that fared worst.

The Moscow Times reported that the performing crocodile was left with injuries after the accountant fell on it in northern Russia. The accountant was travelling with the Soviet Circus from Murmansk to Severomorsk. The two-metre-long crocodile had allegedly been lying on a blanket when the bus they were travelling on hit a pothole in the road. After what the paper called "an unfortunate chain of events" the 120 kg woman was thrown on to the crocodile.

The reptile was left vomiting for several hours afterwards and both sustained shock and minor injuries. The crocodile, called Fedya, seemed to fare worse than the accountant although a medical examination found he was clear of any internal injuries. Fedya had to skip a performance scheduled for later in the evening. The accountant, who was not named, was issued a reprimand for not wearing a seatbelt.

Pensioner becomes oldest man to run 100m in Europe aged 104

A 104-year-old man has set a European record for the 100m, becoming the oldest person to complete it. Stanisław Kowalski is eight years older than the previous record holder and ran the distance more than a second faster, crossing the line in 32.79 seconds. ‘I feel like a new man,’ he said after finishing.

The grandfather, who was competing during the Youth Olympics in Wroclaw, Poland, only began running 12 years ago. He claimed he was in such good condition because he never went to see the doctor and had done anything that pleased him. Kowalski’s grandson, who witnessed him achieve the feat, added: ‘My grandfather always says “so as not to stress”. He is a very quiet man.’
