A naughty boy

Rob: Hi, Julia, what’s up? You look a bit worried.
Julia: Oh. yes. I am worried and not just a bit.
R: What’s wrong? Is it little Jimmy again?
J: Exactly. How did you find out?
R: There is always something about him whenever we talk. What has happened now?
J: His teacher sent me a message that he wants to talk to us, parents again. You know, he started school in September and this the third time.
R: What’s the problem? He doesn’t do his homework? Or eats snacks during the lessons?
J: No, I mean they don’t get homework in first grade so we don’t have to worry about it.
R: He doesn’t like school? He doesn’t want to go?
J: Well, it happens on some days that he just won’t get out of his bed in the morning but normally it’s not a problem, I could say that most of the time he is actually happy to go. He looks forward to meeting his friends.
R: Then what?
J: It’s his behaviour that constantly gives his teacher a headache.
R: Does he keep talking during class?
J: Oh, yes, he does but that’s not the main problem. Other kids also do that. But he always does something that no other kid would do.
R: Like what?
J: Like making funny noises during the lessons. His teacher complained that he climbed on top of the cabinet or hid the teacher’s books and pens and she couldn’t find them.
R: Did you talk to him about it?
J: Of course, but he still does these things again and again. And he regularly comes up with new ideas.
R: He’s a clever boy.
J: Surely and that’s good. But yesterday, for example, he taped sign on his classmates’ back, which said ”Kick me”.
R: Original idea. But seriously. I have a friend who is a child psychologist and she’s really very good with children. I can give you her number. Maybe she could help.
J: Thanks. maybe I will try.

December fun facts

December is the twelfth and last month of the year on our calendar. The name of this month comes from the Latin word decem for “ten”, it was the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar before January and February were added. December always begins on the same day of the week as September and ends on the same day of the week as April. December’s flower is the narcissus, which produces flowers in this month. Its birthstone is turquoise. The meaning of turquoise is prosperity.

In mainly Christian countries, December is dominated by Christmas, which is celebrated on December 25 in most of those countries, though for example in Russia they celebrate it on January 7.

At the beginning of December, the season of Advent starts. The word Advent means ‘coming’ because it’s a time of preparation for the coming holiday of Christmas.

In the past, people believed in some strange things in connection with Christmas. For example, they believed that a child born on Christmas Day will have a special fortune but wearing new shoes on Christmas Day will bring bad luck. And they said if you take a candle to church at Christmas don’t bring it home, but leave it there for good luck.

A birthstone is a gemstone that represents a person’s period of birth, which is usually the month or zodiac sign. Birthstones are often worn as jewelry or as a pendant necklace.

The story of traffic lights

Have you ever wondered why traffic lights are red, yellow and green? They didn’t always have these colours. Actually, the first lights weren’t for cars – they were for trains. When they started to use railway signs in 1830, green meant stop and white meant go. But there were all sorts of problems with the clear, white light. When conductors saw a clear white light from far away, they didn’t know if it was a go light for the train or simply just a light from a house or a street lamp. Another problem was that the green glass sometimes broke and fell out of a stop light and then it looked clear white. The train driver could just think that the broken green light was a go instead of a stop. So the engineers decided to pick new colours.

It was easy to pick red for stop. Red is the colour of blood and makes people naturally think of danger and they stop if they see red. “Go” was changed for green because the colour green doesn’t have much effect on our feelings and emotions. When we see green, our brain tells us we don’t have to be afraid and there is no reason to stop or to slow down. Yellow became “wait” mainly because yellow is the colour that seems the brightest when they put it between red and green. This system worked much better for trains, so finally it was copied for cars.

USEFUL DIALOGUES – BUYING CLOTHES

Assistant: Good afternoon, can I help you?
Woman: Well, yes. Actually, I’m looking for a sweater.
Assistant: This way please, here are all our sweaters!
Woman: Thank you. Oh, that’s a pretty one! Have you got this one in size 10?
Assistant: Let me see, yes! But, only in blue.
Woman: Blue’s fine. May I try it on?
Assistant: Of course, the changing rooms are on the left.
Woman: It fits me well, I think I’ll take it.
Assistant: Good. Let me put it in a bag for you. Are you going to pay in cash or by credit card?
Woman: By credit card.
Assistant: Thank you. And here is your sweater.
Woman: Thank you. Bye!
Assistant: Bye and have a nice day!

FIT VAGY SUIT?

These trousers don’t fit me, I have to change them. They are too small for me. –  Ennek a nadrágnak nem jó a mérete. Ki kell cserélnem. Túl kicsi nekem.

This sweater fits you. You don’t have to change it. It’s the perfect size. – Ez a pulóver jó rád. Nem kell kicserélned. Tökéletes a mérete.

Ha az a ruhadarab/hajviselet/cipő/stb. jól áll annak, aki hordja, akkor nem a ’fit’ hanem a ’to suit’ igét kell használnod!

Például:

This hairstyle doesn’t suit you. You look older now. – Ez a frizura nem áll jól neked. Idősebbnek nézel most ki.

These boots don’t suit me. They’re too elegant for me. I’m more sporty than elegant. – Ez a csizma nem áll jól nekem. Túlságosan elegáns. Én inkább sportos vagyok, mint elegáns.

Ugyanakkor azoknak a nyelvtanulóknak is szeretnénk hasznos olvasnivalót kínálni az egy-egy téma szókincsébe való betekintéssel, akik nem készülnek vizsgára, akármilyen szinten tartanak is. Júliusra az aratás a témánk.

Alapfok B1

It’s a summer picture and it’s harvest time. It’s probably July or August when wheat is harvested. We can see a tractor with a trailer in the background and a harvester in the foreground of the picture. A man in a checked shirt is sitting on the big wheel of the harvester. He’s using his computer. The wheat has already been cut. The wheat heads are lying on the wheat field. I’m not sure what the man is doing on his computer. Maybe he is checking his e-mails or using his Facebook account. Or maybe he needs to get some quick information about the harvest. The blue tractor in the background is standing and I cannot see its driver. The sky is clear and blue, and the weather must be hot.

Harvesting wheat is a hard and tiring job. Wheat is important for baking bread. It’s basic for life and everybody needs it. A good wheat harvest means that there will be enough bread for people to eat. What we can see in the picture is a beautiful sight. I would definitely like to be there. I would enjoy the sight, the smell and the sounds of nature.

A schoolgirl purchased her first house at just eight years old after she and her siblings lumped together the pocket money they had saved up. Ruby McLellan has earned the title of ‘Australia’s youngest homeowner’ by investing money she made doing chores for her parents.

With the help of her siblings Angus and Lucy, who are 14 and 13 respectively, the trio managed to put down $6,000 (£3,092) as a deposit on the four-bedroom property.

The home, which they purchased for $671,000 is now worth $960,000 – a whopping $289,000 growth in value over the last three years. It’s not purely a case of pocket money inflation, though, as Ruby’s parents lent them the remaining cash for the deposit and all their names are on the title.

Ruby is yet to tell her mates at school about her business venture but told Mail Online it’s ‘pretty cool’ being a landlord. The home is ‘positively geared’ – meaning that rent paid is higher than mortgage repayments, so it is not costing the family money to hold the asset.

Ruby and her siblings are already planning their next investment by using the equity in the mortgage of their first buy. Cam McLellan, their dad, is the CEO of property investment company OpenCorp. He has been keen to get his kids into property and teach them the basics of investing, so they can get a head start.

source: Metro

Decide if the statements are true or false.

  1. The children collected all the money for the deposit to buy the house.
  2. Ruby has not shared her property investment with her school friends yet.
  3. The rental income from the property covers all expenses and generates a profit for the family.
  4. Ruby and her siblings have already made further investments.
  5. Their dad encouraged the children to follow his profession.

A brave couple

When Mary told her dad she would marry a black man he got very angry and answered to her, “If you marry that man you will never set foot in my house again.” Mary soon learned that it was not only her father’s hard-hearted attitude, but most people felt the same way about her marriage. The first years of her marriage to Jake when they were living in Birmingham, in the state of Alabama were like hell – no one would speak to them and they couldn’t find anywhere to live because no one wanted to rent an apartment to a black man, and they had no money to buy one. But in spite of all these difficulties they didn’t give up.
As years passed by, gradually life became easier. Mary got teaching jobs, and finally, she ended up as a head teacher at an elementary school. Jake first worked in a factory and then got a job at the post office. Slowly they made friends in their neighbourhood, but it was difficult. Mary used to tell people, “Before I invite you to my home…. my husband is black.” Hearing that some would never talk to her again.

Those times and those problems are over now and last year they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and they are still very much in love, and never regretted what they did and are happy that they married the person they loved, no matter what other people said.
