How Does a Christmas Tree Grow

This is the size of the tree when we buy them from the nurseries to plant on our farm. These are an average of 4 years old when we buy them. Average height 14 to 16 inches tall. We have a tree planter which just kind of opens up the ground, we place a tree in the ground, press the soil back closed, and then they continue growing – we hope! This tree behind me is in its second year of growth. You can see how the new growth we have gotten above there, just a little bit taller. These first years they will average about 6 to 8 inches of growth in their second year here. After that we will probably get 14 to 16 inches in the subsequent years.

The trees every year put one stem up the middle. This is called the leader. It is going to be the trunk of the tree, and it adds a set of branches every year. Now in the White Pines we can see how much the tree has grown. It added this set of branches this spring and grew this new leader. The year before it added these branches and grew this leader. The year before that, you can see from this set of branches, the trunk of the tree up to this set of branches. You can see how the tree is growing every year. Now up on the very tip of the top here, the buds are already set. The one bud, the strongest bud right in the center will grow up next spring and be the new leader. I expect about 14 to 16 inches over the year. The buds around the outside are going to form a set of laterals, a set of branches up here. Grow up, and it just does that every year.

One thing I’d like to point out to people: if there is a dead needle in your tree, that is not a bad thing. Trees shed their needles every year. The needles that are on the interior of the tree, the trees have decided they do not need those needles to continue growing, and it sheds those, usually when the needles are about 3 or 4 years old. Now this time of year especially this tree is filled with dead needles in here. And on the ground a nice solid mat of needles that have dropped over the years. This is a naturally occurring event on all Christmas trees.

US twin baby sisters born holding hands

A pair of US twin sisters who were born holding hands were breathing on their own after being removed from a ventilator, their mother has said. Jillian and Jenna Thistlethwaite shared an amniotic sac and placenta, a rare condition known as monoamniotic birth. "They’re already best friends," said their mother, Sarah Thistlethwaite.

They were born on Friday in the US state of Ohio, grasping each other’s hands when doctors lifted them up for their parents to see after delivery. Monoamniotic birth occurs in only one in 10,000 pregnancies. Ms Thistlethwaite, 32, was monitored for weeks at Akron General Medical Center in Akron, as monoamniotic twins are at risk from becoming entangled in each other’s umbilical cords.

She told the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper that holding her children was "the best Mother’s Day present ever". "I can’t believe they were holding hands," she said. "That’s amazing."

Who wouldn’t want their own place instead of renting? The company Tiny House UK markets its new flatpack wooden cabin as ideal for young couples or an alternative to renting accommodation that leaves most students with £30-50,000 in debt by the time they finish university. The company claims it is as easy to assemble as Ikea furniture and in most cases it doesn’t need planning permission. At £6,500 for a basic but fully insulated model, no wonder that it has become quite popular as a spare bedroom for family or friends, a garden office or a hideaway for teenagers.

These cute huts are fully mobile and easy to park and can also be fitted with a shower, toilet and a kitchen unit containing a sink, a gas burner, a minifridge and a grill. Another advantage is that they are cheap to heat because of their small size, and what is more, they can be packed up when you move house. The company claims that the flatpack kit can be built in two days and the interior walls can be painted any colour you wish. The kit comes without window panes so owners have a choice, but if you’re planning to live in it full-time then proper, double-glazed windows are a must. The bed area in the rafters is big enough for a double mattress even in the smallest, 12-foot model. In terms of comfort, the height of the roof means that the cabin doesn’t feel at all cramped and it certainly looks and feels more permanent and cosy than a caravan.

If solar panels or a small wind turbine, a composting WC and water tanks are installed, the cabin can be used as a weekend house even in the middle of nowhere. The electricity thus generated would not be enough for heating, though, so a wood stove is recommended, which is also perfect for boiling the kettle and heating water on.

Elderly nun sentenced over US nuclear site break-in

An elderly Catholic nun has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for damage caused while breaking into a US nuclear defence site. Sister Megan Rice, 84, and two other protesters cut fences and entered the Oak Ridge, Tennessee, facility, which processes and stores uranium. The other two, Michael Walli and Greg Boertje-Obed, were sentenced to more than five years in prison. The July 2012 incident prompted security changes at the Y-12 site.

The peace activists, members of the group Transform Now Plowshares, had initially faced up to 20 years in prison after their conviction last May. Walli and Boertje-Obed received tougher sentences because they had longer criminal histories. The trio were also found guilty of causing more than $1,000 (£643) of damage to government property. After cutting a fence to enter the site, the three walked around, spray-painted graffiti, strung out crime-scene tape and chipped a wall with hammers. They spent two hours inside. The trio also sprayed the exterior of the complex with baby bottles containing human blood. When a guard approached, they offered him food and started singing.

US lawmakers and the Department of Energy later launched an inquiry and uncovered "troubling displays of ineptitude" at the facility. Top officials were reassigned, including at the National Nuclear Security Administration. WSI, the company providing security at the site, was dismissed and other officers were sacked, demoted or suspended.

Two sixth-form lovers have jetted off to the Caribbean after sneaking out of their public school in the middle of the night. The 16-year-olds told friends they were sick of the rain and cold after returning to their £30,000-a-year school after the Christmas holidays. As fellow pupils and staff at Stonyhurst College in Clitheroe, Lancashire, slept, they took a taxi to Manchester airport and were last seen in the terminal before flying to the Dominican Republic.

Now the pair – who are understood to have been dating each other at the school – are being sought by their parents and police on the island. It is understood the pupils booked tickets online, then told close friends they were going to leave late on Sunday night for a romantic break in the Caribbean. They waited until staff on night duty had gone to bed and fellow pupils were asleep in their dorms before grabbing their bags and sneaking out. They are believed to have walked out of the school gates and down the road before ordering a taxi to the airport, where they boarded an indirect flight to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.

Sources said their parents were sick with worry, but were trying to resolve the drama with minimal police involvement. They are said to be trying to contact the runaway pair and may fly out to bring them back to school. Stonyhurst College, originally founded in 1593 in France, is a Catholic school that accepts pupils from other Christian traditions. Many who board at the school, which has more than 300 boys and 130 girls, come from overseas.

Past pupils include Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and actor Charles Laughton. Traditionalists were outraged when girls were admitted to the school for the first time in 1999. In 2009 a girl and a boy, aged 16 and 17, were expelled after they were caught in bed together.

Last night a source said: ‘It’s the talk of the school. It’s astonishing that, although they are only 16, they could afford to splash out on flights to the Caribbean, but a lot of the pupils at Stonyhurst come from very wealthy families. Many are from overseas and their parents give them credit cards with unlimited credit.’
