(A) FEW / (A) LITTLE

Míg a much és a many azt jelentik, hogy sok, addig a little/few páros azt jelenti, hogy kevés. A little és few szavakat használhatod kijelentő, kérdő és tagadó mondatban is. A különbség a kettő között pont ugyanaz lesz, mint a much és a many között, azaz az egyik a megszámlálható, a másik pedig a nem megszámlálható főnevekre fog vonatkozni. A little vonatkozik a nem megszámlálhatókra, a fewpedig a megszámlálhatókra.

(A) FEW: többes számban lévő megszámlálható főnevekkel használjuk

I have a few eggs. I have enough eggs to bake a cake.

I have few eggs. I don’t have enough eggs to bake a cake.

not too many, but ENOUGH
not many and NOT ENOUGH

(A) LITTLE: nem megszámlálható főnevekkel használjuk
(Ugye nem felejtetted el, hogy a nem megszámlálható főneveknek nincs többes számú alakja?)

I have a little time to watch the news.

Oh my God! It’s 4pm.
I have little time!
I can’t finish the dishes!

not too much, but ENOUGH
not much and NOT ENOUGH

– olvasásértés (B2) https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/orias-husveti-csokitojas/ Thu, 14 Apr 2022 04:54:39 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=63889 Italy’s Extravagant Chocolate Easter Eggs

Chocolate bunnies are the traditional Easter treat in the United States, but Italians prefer gifting chocolate Easter eggs – giant, extravagantly decorated or wrapped, and often holding a treat inside. The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere presents some fun facts about these amazing sweet confections:

Eggs are very symbolic, and not just at Easter. Ancient Romans would bury an egg painted red to encourage a good growing season. Eggs also signify rebirth after the cold winter months. Chocolate eggs became popular in Italy after World War II, when people wanted to celebrate Easter and chocolate was an inexpensive treat.

Unlike small foil-wrapped chocolate eggs in the United States, Italian chocolate eggs are hollow, and can be very large. In the weeks before Easter, shop windows and coffee bars display elaborate eggs, typically wrapped in fancy foil or soft fabrics like silk and tulle. Italian supermarkets create large displays of hollow chocolate eggs targeted specifically to young children, wrapped in bright colors, with small toys inside.

The finest chocolate eggs are made by Italy’s artisanal chocolatiers and pasticcerias, using fine white, milk or dark chocolates, and sometimes flavored with hazelnuts. The fanciest chocolate eggs are elaborately hand-decorated with colored chocolate or royal icing. Sizes range from very small, all the way up to gigantic; the largest can cost hundreds of euros.

Most Italian Easter eggs feature a small trinket or toy inside, or pieces of the sweet confection torrone. The label will include the word sorprese (surprises). Local pasticcerias will sometimes let customers bring their own special gifts to hide inside chocolate eggs, including engagement rings, car keys, airline tickets, and more.

In 2012, an Italian chocolatier presented Pope Benedict XVI with a chocolate Easter egg almost seven feet tall and weighing about 550 pounds. In 2004, a shopping center in Turin made a chocolate Easter egg more than 18 feet tall and weighing 5,500 pounds.

The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere is a not-for-profit organization that celebrates everything Italian by sharing stories such as this, and offering exceptional public programs: Language and cooking classes; art and photo exhibits; film festivals; opera luncheons and casino nights; Italian car shows and fashion shows; live concerts and theatrical performances; guest chef experiences and wine tastings; bocce and bingo (tombola); and much more. Casa Belvedere (house with a beautiful view) has established itself as a vibrant and buzzing cultural center in New York City. For more information, visit casa-belvedere.org.

Burgled Family Receive UK’s Best Christmas Tree

A family whose Christmas was ruined last year by a devastating burglary have this year been given the UK’s best Christmas tree. The staggering 7.5 m tall tree – so tall it goes through the roof – took 24 hours to install in the Penniston’s home and contains more than 100 metres of Christmas lights.

It’s a startling contrast to this time last year when the family, from Maulden, lost items of both financial and sentimental value. Parents Nicola, 35, and Christopher, 38, told of the emotional impact the burglary had as thieves ran off with their children’s first teeth and Christmas presents. However, the smiles returned to kids Finlay, 7, and Jasmine, 12, who were surprised with the giant installation when they returned home today. The family had been out getting into the festive spirit by sledging at the nearby Milton Keynes Snozone – an indoor ski and snow centre.

Adorned with a hundred decorations created by school children from around the UK, the giant tree also contains details of kind deeds. The surprise, organised by Marks & Spencer, was part of their Two Fairies Christmas campaign.

On December 13 2013, after returning home from a last-minute shopping trip, the Penniston family found the front door wide open and the house raided by burglars. Yet it was the sentimental items and the emotional impact that had the biggest effect. Nicola, an HR consultant, said: “Last Christmas was a tough time for us – we just didn’t have a Christmas at all in the end. The most upsetting part was losing all the irreplaceable items.” Family photo albums were taken as well as items of jewellery and cash.

Finlay, seven, said: “This is the most epic Christmas we’ve ever had. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the tree! I don’t know how the fairies did it. Last Christmas I was scared to even go in my bedroom, now it’s the best room ever!”

Match the words with the definitions.

1. burglary

a) difficult period in one’s life

2. sledging

b) going into a building to commit theft

3. to be ruined

c) causing negative emotions

4. tough time

d) a light wooden vehicle on runners children use to go downhill

5. upsetting

e) to be destroyed

It’s Black Friday – the biggest shopping day of the year. We’ll have all the bargains, special offers and scraps as shoppers scramble to get the best deals.

Millions of bargain hunters are flooding stores to snap up their Black Friday deals – causing mayhem throughout the country. Arrests have already been made as shoppers battle over the best bargains in supermarkets which opened at midnight. Police have been called to stores in Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham and London amid fears of crowd surges. Shoppers described scenes of “carnage” as people scrambled for the best deals.

Greater Manchester Police said at least two people have been arrested at Black Friday sales events already this morning. Officers attended a store on Excelsior Road in Cardiff twice after midnight over concerns about “customer conduct.” A woman suffered minor injuries after being hit by a falling television in Stretford and an ambulance was called. The Tesco store at Ellesmere Shopping Centre in Walkden was closed down after a crowd of more than 500 people attended.
