In the picture we can see an elderly man and a cute little girl planting tomatoes in a pot. There are lots of tomato plants around them, some of them are ripe and some of them are still unripe. The man may be the grandfather of the little girl. He’s helping her to fill the pots with the soil to prepare it for the tomato plant. They’re in the garden, but not outside. They’re in a greenhouse. It’s raining outside and it’s probably early spring when the weather is still not warm enough to grow tomatoes out in the garden. In the greenhouse the temperature is warm and the plants can grow well. Most people like doing the gardening. It’s usually cheaper to grow vegetables at home than to buy them at the market, and they are healthier as well. Home-grown vegetables and fruit are delicious and it’s very convenient that you just go out to the garden and pick something fresh when you do the cooking. My favourite vegetables are tomatoes and peas, but I also like beans and I’m happy when the first strawberries appear at the market.

This photo must have been taken in spring because we can see tomato plants in a greenhouse. In summer tomatoes don’t need a greenhouse, they can grow very well outside in the garden, too. A little girl and an elderly man are working in the greenhouse. They’re filling a flowerpot with soil and probably they’re going to plant tomato plants in the pot. There are several pots of cherry tomatoes in different stages of ripening around them. It seems the little girl is happy to help the man who’s probably her grandpa. Gardening is good fun and it’s also useful. It’s very economical to grow your own vegetables and fruit in your garden if you have enough ground for it, though it can be hard work. You need good tools to start with. A spade to dig the dirt, a hoe to deal with the weeds, a rake to smooth the soil, secateurs to prune the trees. Gardening needs some expertise, you have to know where to plant what and how to do pest control. But if you invest enough time and effort and take good care of your garden it pays off. You can harvest and enjoy your own crop.

We live in a house with a garden and I also enjoy gardening. We don’t grow any vegetables in the garden we only have a few fruit trees, raspberry bushes and a small strawberry patch in the back garden. We have lots of flowers – snowdrops, tulips, daffodils, roses, hyacinths, lilies of the valley, forget-me-nots, violets – and grass of course. The lawn needs a lot of care if you want it to be green all summer. It needs mowing every second week, you have to water it almost every day and weed it if necessary. But no matter how much you care for it will never be as green as the lawn for example in England. Hungarian summers are too dry for that and the lawn would need more rain. Watering in itself unfortunately can’t make up for that.

The greenhouse can provide the necessary circumstances for vegetables to grow even when the circumstances outside aren’t ideal. A greenhouse can be heated, the humidity and the light can be controlled, so all the conditions are given to grow vegetables no matter which part of the year you’re in. Whether it’s a good thing or not is a controversial issue. Some say that it’s absolutely unnecessary and unwise to eat, for example, tomatoes in the winter months and we should stick to eating only what’s seasonal and grows in the garden and on the fields as their nutrients are better, fresher and they contain more minerals and vitamins than their counterparts grown in greenhouses. Others insist on their right to eat whatever they have a liking for, no matter where it comes from or what kind of environmental issues it poses. It’s a fact that growing vegetables and fruits in greenhouses requires lots of electricity and puts a strain on the environment, but the crop that comes out of them is not only a treat for your eyes, but is also good for your health. The more varied diet you have the healthier it is. Seasonal goods can be rather dull after a while and pose a challenge for cooks and housewives how to use them as ingredients if they don’t want to cook the same dishes always.

Gardening is a very popular pastime activity. Home-grown vegetables and fruit are said to contain more nutrients than those you can purchase in big hypermarkets. Working in the garden is also beneficial for health, it relieves stress, moves your muscles and provides lots of fresh oxygen for your lungs. Children are usually fond of planting seeds and harvesting the products they grow. Gardening with the grandparents or parents is generally more educational than science lessons in school where the kids only learn about things in theory. Experiencing the real shape, smell and texture of a vegetable or fruit is lasting and they definitely will remember what nature has taught them. In my opinion schools should be less theoretical and should teach more practical subjects. Gardening could be introduced as a practical subject where children could experiment with seeds and plants and could acquire first-hand experience about what textbooks try to cram into their heads with little success. Gardening doesn’t require a big plot of land, a small patch of land is usually available even in an urban environment or if all else fails – you can grow plants in window boxes as well. Nothing is impossible, if there is a will there’s a way.

An Illinois yoga studio invited some shelter cats into their class recently, in a bid to help find the felines forever homes. The Homeward Bound Pet Shelter teamed up with Yoga at Connie’s studio to host the class. The shelter cat yoga class was a great success; June is also Adopt-a-Cat month, and the collaborative event raised more than $500 for Homeward Bound. The class also hoped to find homes for the friendly shelter cats.

Connie Pease, who runs Yoga at Connies and her friend Jeanette Skaluba are both cat lovers. Jeanette came up with event after a video of 12-year-old cat Oreo riding on her shoulder went viral. She explained that after seeing how popular cats were on the Internet, she hoped the event would spur on adoptions. Connie, says: “Jeannette Skabula and I have been practicing yoga together for five years at the studio which I own. Jeanette also volunteers at Homeward Bound, and she had the idea using yoga as a way to promote cat adoption. I thought it was great idea since we both love cats. We had only a week to prepare. Jeanette organized the volunteers and the cats. We had no idea this would go viral.”

Homeward Bound Pet Shelter in the city of Decatur, Illinois, posted the video to their YouTube channel in recognition of June being adopt-a-cat month. Connie, adds: “While we’re not sure all the cats would be so up for yoga on demand, they’re cats – we do know from experience they often times can’t resist a yoga mat and a Down Dog. In fact, we might be convinced they take more pleasure in interrupting yoga, than actually co-practicing with human companions. And, of course, as humans we can’t expect to get in the most meditative class we’ve ever had, but there’s something extra special about doing your animal poses right next to the fuzzy creatures who inspired them. In short, animals, and especially cats, are awesome.”

The video footage shows the shelter cats enjoying roaming around the gym whilst interacting with students practicing yoga. The video explains that cat owners are at 40 per cent lower risk of having a heart attack and that interacting with a cat can lower blood pressure.

Olympics opening ceremony to feature English countryside with farm animals   Danny Boyle has revealed details about the London 2012 Olympics’ opening ceremony, which is to take a ‘Glastonbury meets the last night of the Proms’ theme – and feature farmyard animals. Work has begun on installation of the set for the opening scene of the ceremony, which is to be called ‘Green and Pleasant’. The Olympic stadium will be transformed into a British countryside environment, with scenes of picnics being staged by 10,000 volunteers in front of a landmark-laden backdrop that includes the Glastonbury Tor. Up to 30 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, nine geese, three cows, three sheepdogs and two goats will also feature in the show along with music by British dance act Underworld. Serving as artistic director for the London 2012 opening ceremony, Boyle is best known for directing award-winning films such as Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and Trainspotting.  He said the ceremony will be ‘elusive’, a ‘puzzle’ and that it will create ‘a picture of ourselves as a nation’.

Boyle has created roles for NHS nurses in the spectacle, saying: ‘The best way to tell that story is through working with real people. I’ve been astounded by the selfless dedication of the volunteers, they are the pure embodiment of the Olympic spirit and represent the best of who we are as a nation.’ Europe’s largest bell will also be rung in the stadium to open a Shakespeare-inspired segment which will feature 900 children.

Globe-trotting Brits Bill and Laurel Cooper have finally returned to the UK to retire – after spending 36 years at sea. The couple have sailed the equivalent of four times around the globe since setting off in 1976. They have been travelling around on boats they built themselves since Bill quit his high-flying job in the city and they sold their home in Chatham, Kent.

Over the past four decades they have notched up nearly 100,000 nautical miles sailing across seven seas, stopping in 45 different countries. They’ve also battled 25ft waves, hurricanes, and winds of 100mph and got close enough to dolphins, sharks and whales. And they even once had a one-eyed cat called Nelson on their boat. Former Royal Navy Commander Bill, 83, said: "We’ve had a wonderful time but I’m afraid I have been over-taken by what you could call ill-health. When I got to about 78, I thought this isn’t going to go on forever so we built a boat we could manage when old age really strikes – we call it the geriatric boat. We will have to get used to the life here. I plan to write a book and decay gently."

Laurel, 82, added: "We have had an absolutely amazing life. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. I’m very happy looking back at all the wonderful places we’ve been, the people we’ve met and the adventures we’ve had. We’ve been very lucky, but we always knew it wouldn’t last forever."

The couple met in 1945 and started sailing together on the Norfolk Broads two years later, with Bill as the captain and Laurel as first mate. In 1976 they sold their detached, six-bedroom house and gave the money to their children Shelley and Benedict. They took their first sea cruise together in 1954 in a boat around Sicily when Shelley was still a baby. Funded by Bill’s Navy pension and the proceeds of selling his partnership, they set sail on 50ft steel ketch "Fare Well" — and never looked back.

Bill and Laurel spent ten years sailing the Mediterranean and Caribbean, across the Atlantic and along the US Intra-Coastal Waterway from New York to Florida. The plucky pair even received a medal for having the only vessel to survive the devastating Hurricane Alberto north of Bermuda in 1982 without calling a lifeboat for help. It is the only notable scrape the pair had in their entire sailing career, and Bill prides himself on careful navigation to keep them out of trouble. In 1986, they upgraded their living space by buying an 87ft barge, which had been used to carry peanuts, and named it "Hosanna".

They fitted her up and spent the next two decades cruising around the canals of France, Belgium and the Netherlands, and the Aegian Sea around Greece.The couple, who have three grandchildren, returned numerous times over the years for Christmases and other family events. In 2005, they built their third and final boat "Faraway" entirely to their own specifications, with Bill doing the woodwork and Laurel the painting.  Laurel added: "I’m like a cat, I can be comfortable anywhere — it’s how I’ve survived all this time."
