How Does a Christmas Tree Grow

This is the size of the tree when we buy them from the nurseries to plant on our farm. These are an average of 4 years old when we buy them. Average height 14 to 16 inches tall. We have a tree planter which just kind of opens up the ground, we place a tree in the ground, press the soil back closed, and then they continue growing – we hope! This tree behind me is in its second year of growth. You can see how the new growth we have gotten above there, just a little bit taller. These first years they will average about 6 to 8 inches of growth in their second year here. After that we will probably get 14 to 16 inches in the subsequent years.

The trees every year put one stem up the middle. This is called the leader. It is going to be the trunk of the tree, and it adds a set of branches every year. Now in the White Pines we can see how much the tree has grown. It added this set of branches this spring and grew this new leader. The year before it added these branches and grew this leader. The year before that, you can see from this set of branches, the trunk of the tree up to this set of branches. You can see how the tree is growing every year. Now up on the very tip of the top here, the buds are already set. The one bud, the strongest bud right in the center will grow up next spring and be the new leader. I expect about 14 to 16 inches over the year. The buds around the outside are going to form a set of laterals, a set of branches up here. Grow up, and it just does that every year.

One thing I’d like to point out to people: if there is a dead needle in your tree, that is not a bad thing. Trees shed their needles every year. The needles that are on the interior of the tree, the trees have decided they do not need those needles to continue growing, and it sheds those, usually when the needles are about 3 or 4 years old. Now this time of year especially this tree is filled with dead needles in here. And on the ground a nice solid mat of needles that have dropped over the years. This is a naturally occurring event on all Christmas trees.

Az írásbeli vizsga időtartama 180 perc, a szóbeli vizsgáé 15 perc. A középszintű vizsga két nyelvi szintet fog át: az Európa Tanács skálájának A2-B1 szintjeit. Az eltérő képesség- és tudásszintek mérése érdekében az írásbeli feladatsorokban a lépcsőzetesség elve érvényesül. A központi feladatsorokat úgy állítják össze, hogy az A2 szinten lévő vizsgázók is le tudják tenni a vizsgát. A vizsgázónak az írásbeli és a szóbeli vizsgarészben külön-külön teljesítenie kell az elérhető pontszámnak legalább a 12%-át.

Olvasott szöveg értése (60 perc, 33 pont)

A vizsgán az alábbi feladattípusok fordulhatnak elő:

– feleletválasztás,

– hiányos szöveg kiegészítése (szavak, kifejezések pótlása előre megadott listából vagy anélkül),

– rövid választ igénylő, nyitott kérdések,

Szóbeli vizsga (15 perc, 33 pont)

A vizsgabeszélgetésben az aktív szerepet a vizsgázó játssza.

A vizsgán a következőfeladattípusok fordulnak elő, az alábbi sorrendben:

3. – önálló témakifejtés segédanyagok (vizuális és verbális) alapján.

A szóbeli tételt a vizsgázó húzza. A tétel három feladatból áll. A feladatok kidolgozásához felkészülési időnincs, de a második és harmadik feladat végiggondolásához a vizsgázónak rövid (körülbelül fél perc) gondolkodási idő áll rendelkezésére.

Az első feladatban, a társalgásban a vizsgázó néhány olyan kérdésre válaszol, amelyek saját személyéhez, közvetlen környezetéhez és hétköznapi tevékenységeihez kapcsolódnak. A társalgás három témát érint röviden.

A második feladat, a szituációs feladat során a vizsgázónak a mindennapi élet helyzeteihez hasonlító szituációban kell részt vennie, amelyben partnere a vizsgáztató. A vizsgázó feladata az, hogy a tételben meghatározott helyzetben, a meghatározott cél elérése érdekében különböző kommunikációs szándékok felhasználásával beszélgetést (interakciót vagy tranzakciót) folytasson, azaz szükség esetén megfelelő kérdéseket tegyen fel, illetve azelhangzottakra megfelelően reagáljon.

A harmadik feladatban, az önálló témakifejtésben, a vizsgázónak azt kell megmutatnia, hogy képes-e hétköznapi, élettapasztalatokhoz kapcsolódó témákban gondolatait, véleményét részletesen, összefüggően kifejteni képek és irányítószempontok alapján. A vizsgázónak ebben a feladatban egy témáról a hozzá kapcsolódó két-három kép (fénykép, rajz) és megadott irányítószempontok alapján kell beszélnie.

Sainthood for John Paul II and John XXIII, as throngs pack St. Peter’s Square

John XXIII and John Paul II were canonized Sunday by Pope Francis in an unprecedented ceremony witnessed by huge crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. Millions more around the world watched as the two former pontiffs were installed as saints. The faithful and the curious had packed the streets of Rome around the Vatican before dawn, hoping to catch a glimpse of church history in the making.

The Vatican said it expected 1 million people to gather in St. Peter’s Square for the first dual canonization of former popes, followed by a Mass. Giant screens were also set up nearby to allow those who didn’t make it into the square to follow proceedings. Many of those gathered in the square for the solemn open-air ceremony carried flags and banners. The red and white Polish flag was prominent among them, a reflection of the affection felt for John Paul II in his homeland, Poland.

John XXIII (1881-1963) — known as Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli before he became Pope — was one of 13 children born into a family of Italian peasants, farmers from a tiny village in the country’s north, before being sent away to study for the priesthood at age 11. He helped to bring the Church to the people, for example by allowing languages other than Latin to be used for Mass.

John Paul II (1920-2005), born Karol Jozef Wojtyla, was brought up in a grimy industrial town in Poland and raised by his soldier father after his mother died when he was just 8 years old. He spent his formative years living under first Nazis, then Communists. John Paul II, who served for nearly 27 years, is seen as the "pope of the family."

Stonehenge: Was the prehistoric monument built for rock music?

Researchers have claimed that giant Preseli Mountain bluestones were chosen to form part of Stonehenge because of their acoustic properties. According to experts from London’s Royal College of Art, some of the stones sound like bells, drums, and gongs when “played” or hit with hammers. Archaeologists have long pondered why stone age man transported bluestones 200 miles (322 km) from Pembrokeshire to the Wiltshire site.

Researchers tested thousands of stones in Pembrokeshire during the project and a high proportion was found to “ring” when struck. Researcher Paul Devereux said: “There’s lots of different tones, you could play a tune. In fact, we have had percussionists who have played proper percussion pieces off the rocks.”

Musical rocks are known as “lithophones” and have long been associated with the area. A local tale in the nearby village of Maenclochog, which translates as “stone bells” or “ringing stones” suggests there were stones to the south of the village in the 18th century which rang like bells when struck.

Investigator Jon Wozencroft said researchers had feared the musical magic of the stones at Stonehenge might have been damaged after being set in concrete during the 1950s. Mr Wozencroft said the stones did resonate but not like those in Wales, which could be heard half a mile away. He said stone age people might have used the rocks to communicate with each other over long distances as there are marks on the stones where they have been struck. Paul Devereux added: “There had to be something special about these rocks. Why else would they take them from here all the way to Stonehenge?”

An overpopulation of chihuahuas is causing havoc in an Arizona town. Maricopa County Animal Care and Control has said it received 6,000 calls from concerned Maryvale residents last year, reporting out-of-control chihuahuas being a nuisance on their streets. Locals say that the children are being chased on their way to school, while dog mess is being left all over the pavements.

Maryvale resident Ray Rios told Fox News: ‘They are out here chasing kids or going yard to yard… anywhere in groups of eight to 12 just running around.’ However, because it is so busy, the animal control centre said it needs help to restrain them. ‘If at all possible, if you see a stray, if you can safely contain him in your yard and then call us – that makes a big difference,’ Melissa Gable told ABC News. ‘Because what’s happening is people are calling saying, “hey I see a stray” by the time we get there, it’s long gone.’

Officials are also giving advice to avoid the roaming packs being replicated in another area – neuter your dogs and keep them on a leash.

Two sixth-form lovers have jetted off to the Caribbean after sneaking out of their public school in the middle of the night. The 16-year-olds told friends they were sick of the rain and cold after returning to their £30,000-a-year school after the Christmas holidays. As fellow pupils and staff at Stonyhurst College in Clitheroe, Lancashire, slept, they took a taxi to Manchester airport and were last seen in the terminal before flying to the Dominican Republic.

Now the pair – who are understood to have been dating each other at the school – are being sought by their parents and police on the island. It is understood the pupils booked tickets online, then told close friends they were going to leave late on Sunday night for a romantic break in the Caribbean. They waited until staff on night duty had gone to bed and fellow pupils were asleep in their dorms before grabbing their bags and sneaking out. They are believed to have walked out of the school gates and down the road before ordering a taxi to the airport, where they boarded an indirect flight to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.

Sources said their parents were sick with worry, but were trying to resolve the drama with minimal police involvement. They are said to be trying to contact the runaway pair and may fly out to bring them back to school. Stonyhurst College, originally founded in 1593 in France, is a Catholic school that accepts pupils from other Christian traditions. Many who board at the school, which has more than 300 boys and 130 girls, come from overseas.

Past pupils include Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and actor Charles Laughton. Traditionalists were outraged when girls were admitted to the school for the first time in 1999. In 2009 a girl and a boy, aged 16 and 17, were expelled after they were caught in bed together.

Last night a source said: ‘It’s the talk of the school. It’s astonishing that, although they are only 16, they could afford to splash out on flights to the Caribbean, but a lot of the pupils at Stonyhurst come from very wealthy families. Many are from overseas and their parents give them credit cards with unlimited credit.’

Cocaine cargo sent to German supermarket ‘by mistake’

Police in Berlin have found 140kg of cocaine hidden in banana boxes which were sent to a supermarket in an apparent mistake by traffickers. Cocaine valued at 6m euros (£5m; $8.2m) was found in fruit sent to five branches of Aldi-Nord in and around the German capital, police said.

The drugs are believed to have arrived by sea in Hamburg from Colombia, from where they were shipped by lorry. Smugglers probably made a "logistical error", a police spokesman said. It was Berlin’s biggest cocaine haul in years, Olaf Schremm added. Workers at five branches of Aldi in Berlin and one in Brandenburg uncovered the drugs while unpacking the boxes, the German news magazine Spiegel reports. Aldi declined to comment, citing the continuing investigation.

Four years ago, workers at Spanish branches of another German budget supermarket chain, Lidl, found nearly 80kg of cocaine hidden in boxes of bananas imported from Ecuador. Police said Lidl had had nothing to do with the smuggling operation and thanked the chain for its help in finding the drug, The Guardian newspaper reports.

Rare set of identical triplets born in Northern California

It’s three times the joy – and at one in a million odds. A couple in Northern California gave birth to a rare set of naturally conceived identical triplets, doctors at Sutter Memorial Hospital said. Abby, Brin and Laurel Hepner were born at the hospital November 22 to proud parents Hannah and Tom Hepner of Quincy, California.

The odds of conceiving identical triplets without fertility drugs are anywhere from 1-in-1-million to 1-in-100-million, said Dr. William Gilbert, director of Sutter Women’s Services – though it’s hard to estimate because of the rarity of the occurrence.

Hepner said that wife Hannah, 29, is “quite a remarkable woman. She cruised through the experience. Hats off to her.” Hannah Hepner said the remarkable rarity of her daughters’ birth “loses its relevance when you are holding them. It did happen and they are here. We understand that they are going to be individuals,” she added “We look forward to finding out who those individuals are and helping them along the way.”

Identical triplets are produced when a single fertilized egg splits into three. At birth, Abby weighed 1.4 kg; Brin 1.7; and Laurel 1.8 kg. The girls are still in the hospital until all three gain weight and can maintain body temperature and eat properly.
