A study from the University of Auckland has recently revealed that not only do dogs get jealous of their owners, they even have the ability to get jealous in scenarios they imagine between their owner and another dog.

A commonly held belief among people today is that dogs can only see in shades of gray, but this is not the case. While dogs are unable to differentiate between shades of red and green, seeing both instead as shades of gray, they have the full ability to see shades of yellows and blues. It is actually recommended that you use a blue ball when playing in a grassy field with your canine companion to help them differentiate between the ball and the grass.

Recent studies published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine show that not only is petting a dog pleasant emotionally, but it also has positive physical effects. Participants in the study had decreased blood pressure and heart rates when interacting with dogs, especially when cuddling with and petting these furry fellows. Next time you feel that blood pressure rising, seek out your kind companion.

Have you ever been listening to one of your favorite songs and stopped to wonder if little Fido was enjoying it, too? Well, now you can rest assured that he likely is. According to a study in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, dogs in a kennel environment who were played classical music showed decreased anxiety and increased relaxation. Further studies showed that dogs seem to prefer music that is between 50-60 BPM, so if you’re making the perfect playlist for your pup pal, stick to the slower songs.

Dogs in Moscow have been observed using the metro stations not just as shelter — but to navigate the city. Stray dogs will regularly take the subway to stops to find food, visit people, and sometimes just for fun.

While now we dress our furry friends in sweaters and booties, in Ancient Rome, it was a different story. Roman War Dogs were often suited up in plate metal armor and spiked collars and sent to fight alongside their human compatriots. The use of war dogs was not exclusive to Rome — many ancient civilizations, such as Assyria, Greece, and Sumer, used hounds of war as well.

While every breed of dog is different, studies have shown that overall, dogs possess roughly the same level of cognition as a 2-year-old child. Például a „give up” azt jelenti, hogy feladom, de még véletlenül sem a postán, hanem az életben!

Miért ennyire fontosak?

A hétköznapi angol nyelv (amit az átlagemberek használnak) előszeretettel tartalmaz phrasal verb-öket, és ha szeretnél természetesen hangazni, akkor bizony nem kerülheted el a használatukat.

Azért sem elhanyagolandók, mert nagyon sok belőlük több jelentéssel bír, akár három-négy különböző dolgot is jelenthetnek.

Hogyan működnek?

Nagyon fontos, hogy bár két részből állnak, egy egységként, egy kifejezésként kell őket értelmezni és megtanulni. Vannak olyanok, ahol az ige és a vonzat elválasztható egymástól, például „turn on the light/turn the light on”, és vannak olyanok is, amelyeket nem lehet elválasztani egymástól, például „look after the kids” helyett nem lehet az mondani, hogy „look the kids after”.

]]> Every February we celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving flowers, candy and cards to those we love. We do this in honour of Saint Valentine. You may be wondering, “Who is St. Valentine”? Time to brush up on your Valentine’s history!

Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. There was an Emperor at that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married. With this thought in mind he outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger military base. Supposedly, Valentine, decided this decree just wasn’t fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine’s actions he had him put to death.

Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailer‘s daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the first ‘valentine’ himself when he wrote her a letter and signed it ‘Your Valentine’, words still used on cards today.

Perhaps we’ll never know the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure…February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating clear back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentines ranks second only to Christmas in number of greeting cards sent.

Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin cupido, “desire”). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.

Itt jegyezd meg azt is, hogy a swamp szó jelentése mocsár, tehát míg mi azt mondjuk, hogy “be vagyok havazva”, addig angolul azt mondjuk, hogy “elnyelt a mocsár”.
