Radioman – hajléktalanból lett Hollywood kedvence https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/radioman-hajlektalanbol-lett-hollywood-kedvence/ Mon, 24 Nov 2025 04:00:46 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=57243 “Wherever I go I’m radioman, I’m not radioman without that radio, without it I feel powerless.”

Radioman – the man that Tom Hanks calls a cultural institution and Meryl Streep calls a good luck charm – has often been in the headlines over the years pictured with many A-list stars. He is the full-bearded eccentric movie fan who used to be homeless but turned into inspiration as he overcame severe alcoholism to realize his dream as part of the New York Film industry. He is often seen in the background of movies and TV shows filmed in New York.

Radioman was born in 1951 as Craig Castaldo. He grew up in Brooklyn, his father was a labourer, and his mother was an unsuccessful theatre model. His parents moved to Florida, he did not want to move with them, so this led to him living on the streets in New York City. For years Castaldo was fighting a serious problem with alcoholism and used to seek refuge in the Penn station of the New York subway. He eventually received treatment and has now been sober for many years.

Despite his difficult life, he was interested in the glamour of Hollywood, saying that he always wanted to be an actor or something in the movies as he loves everything about it.

It was while living on the streets when Castaldo used to heckle movie stars. He started hanging around the recording sets when they were filming on the streets, and he would ask for food or money and what they were filming. The sometimes crude but well-spoken Radioman would trade insults and joke with the stars. Soon his regular presence got noticed, and a couple of directors asked him to appear in the odd scene as himself.

Early on the TV detective series The Equalizer, starring Edward Woodward, filmed around Castaldo in the street he was helping a newspaper seller. One day it is said that he offered a fellow homeless man some beer – the man turned out to be Bruce Willis shooting The Bonfire of the Vanities.  He drunkenly shouted at Willis “I think your movie looks like a cartoon!” Later he was in Central Park and met Robin Williams filming The Fisher King. He asked Williams who he was and told Williams that they looked like twins as there is a resemblance between them, he then said he told Williams he wasn’t playing a homeless person in the right way and took him along to meet some of his homeless friends.

Castaldo’s Radioman is now a New York legend, a film set mascot and has been written about in New York newspapers and magazines. Whoopi Goldberg even took him to the Oscars one year as her guest when she hosted. Tom Hanks said “The man’s a cultural institution. You get on a first name basis with Radio, you know you’ve made it”

Castaldo has had cameos in well over 100 movies such as The Departed, The Bourne Identity films, Big Daddy, Shutter Island, Elf and Godzilla. Also, TV shows including 30 Rock and Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In many of the cameos, he has a portable radio or boom box hanging from around his neck which is where the nickname Radioman comes from.

Documentary (2012)

A sensitively made documentary film called Radioman came out in April 2012. It features actors including George Clooney, Robin Williams, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Josh Brolin, Johnny Depp, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Whoopi Goldberg, and Helen Mirren. The documentary explores Radioman’s life in detail and through interviews with these stars, it shows the bizarre life he had from homelessness to cameo actor as he travels around New York looking for film sets while entertaining everyone on set.

FUNNY SAYINGS: like a headless chicken https://www.5percangol.hu/phrasal_verbs_and_idioms_tananyagok/funny-sayings-like-a-headless-chicken/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 23:49:55 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/funny-sayings-like-a-headless-chicken/ like a headless chicken (British) also like a chicken with its head cut off (American)

Meaning: If you do something like a headless chicken, you do it very quickly and without thinking carefully about what you are doing.

Usage: It is usually used in continuous tenses.

Origin: It comes from the phrase “to run like a headliess chicken” and from the fact that sometimes when the head of a chicken is cut off, it will run around in circles aimlessly until it dies.

MIKE THE HEADLESS CHICKEN

Mike the Headless Chicken also known as Miracle Mike, was a Wyandotte chicken that lived for 18 months after his head had been mostly cut off. As lots of people thought it was a hoax, the bird’s owner took him to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City to prove that Mike is a living creature.

… but how could this happen?

On September 10, 1945, farmer Lloyd Olsen of Fruita, Colorado, United States, had his mother-in-law around for supper and was sent out to the yard by his wife to bring back a chicken. Olsen chose a five-and-a-half-month-old cockerel named Mike. The axe missed the jugular vein, leaving one ear and most of the brain stem intact.

After Olsen literally butchered his beheading job, Mike was still able to balance on a perch and walk clumsily. He even attempted to preen and crow, although he could do neither. After the bird didn’t die, a surprised Mr. Olsen decided to continue to care permanently for Mike, feeding him a mixture of milk and water via an eyedropper. He was also fed small grains of corn.

A new, beheaded life

When used to his new and unusual condition, Mike could easily get himself to the highest perches without falling. His crowing, though, was less impressive and consisted of a gurgling sound made in his throat, leaving him unable to crow at dawn. Mike also spent his time preening and attempting to peck for food with his neck.

Rise to fame

Once his fame had been established, Mike began a career of touring sideshows in the company of such other creatures as a two-headed calf. He was also photographed for dozens of magazines and papers, featuring in Time and Life magazines.

Mike was on display to the public for an admission cost of twenty five cents. At the height of his popularity, the chicken earned US$4,500 per month (worth $48,000 in 2010 dollars) and was valued at $10,000. Olsen’s success resulted in a wave of copycat chicken beheading, but no other chicken lived for more than a day or two.

The end of the story

In March 1947, at a motel in Phoenix on a stopover while traveling back home from tour, Mike started choking in the middle of the night. As the Olsens had left their feeding and cleaning syringes at the sideshow the day before, they were unable to save Mike and therefore he choked to death in the motel.

]]> Minden, amit a téliszalámiról tudni kell … angolul https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/minden-amit-a-telizsalamirol-tudni-kell/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 06:38:36 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/minden-amit-a-telizsalamirol-tudni-kell/ One of the best-known and liked food products of Hungary worldwide is undoubtedly Pick Winter Salami, or “téliszalámi”, as it is called in Hungary. Based on a unique, secret recipe, using pork, bacon and secret spices, this cold smoked and dry matured Hungarian delicacy has been produced for centuries.

It is no surprise that Pick Winter Salami is among the most popular Hungarian food-related Hungaricums. It is distinguished by its delicate spice mix, its wide girth, and its “noble mould“. The expression “téliszalámi” recalls old times when salami could only be manufactured in the winter. It is available in nearly every Hungarian food shop and its logo can be found on the handball team’s outfit in Szeged, where the salami is produced.

Everyone knows the name Pick in Hungary. But what many Hungarians don’t know is that the company, the country’s largest pork processor, was founded by a Jewish man, who might not have eaten his own signature product, and who used his pork profits to build one of the country’s grandest synagogues the monumental Szeged Synagogue – the second largest in Hungary -, which was finished in 1907.

Márk Pick started producing the well-known salami in 1869, in Szeged, after he had returned from Italy, the homeland of salami, with some sausage makers. The large-scale production began in 1885. It quickly captured the world and was awarded a bronze medal in the Paris World Fair in 1900.

Márk Pick died in 1892 and his widow handled the business until their son, Jenő, took over in 1906. It was the beginning of a new age in the history of the factory. He purchased the bankrupt “Tiani” salami factory in the neighbourhood, so the whole real estate at the River Tisza belonged to the Pick family.

téliszalámi

Jenő Pick aspired to bring about great changes with modern instruments. He had a good sense for the market, he saw the importance of promotion. Salami became the leader product in the first decade of the 20th century.  By 1939, the Pick factory was the second largest food processing plant in Hungary. In 1944 the Nazi Germany invaded Hungary and Jenő had to leave Szeged with other, approximately 9,000 Jews. He arrived in Budapest and survived the war under the protection of the Swedish Embassy. In 1948, the socialist government nationalized the company. Jenő visited Szeged to see if the factory was still there, but later returned to Budapest where his children supported him until he died.

In 2007, the “Winter Salami” gained European Union PDO status. Eventually, the Pick factory was bought out by other salami production companies, including Ringa in 2007 and Herz in 2010, and lost connection with the Pick family.

According to the original recipe the salami was made of donkey meat, and flavoured with a secret spice mix.  Originally, the salami was encased in horse intestines, later it was replaced with cellulose. After a while, however, there were not enough donkeys left, so another type of meat was needed to replace it.

Pick found the solution to have a comparable taste, and it was elder sow meat. The sausage making process was similar to other methods, except that he had used horse casings followed by a cold smokingpreservation of the salami, and finished with a precise drying and ripening procedure. With this new process the salami became covered with magnificent mould, giving the product a unique and characteristic smell and taste. Mould fungi need a chilly temperature and suitable humidity to settle down. Therefore, the factories were established at riversides, such as the original Pick Salami factory by the River Tisza.

téliszalámi

The Pick family established something remarkable in the form of its legendary salami, which has become a Hungaricum, a worldwide known, tasty, and desired product. Excellent quality, carefully selected raw materials and a strict quality assurance system guarantee that their Winter Salami will remain as remarkable as it was when it was first created.

 INTERESTING FACTS

  • Paprika did not originally feature among the seasonings used in Pick salami; it was only later that paprika-flavoured (“choice”) and “spicy” salami were introduced
  • The principal guarantee of quality was the salami masters with their outstanding expertise. They lived on the factory premises and were at hand night and day to take any measures in the maturing process which were necessary because of changes in the weather. Everything depended on the weather. How much ventilation time was necessary or possible? At what level should the salami going through the maturing process be kept?
  • No-one has yet succeeded in copying the secrets of Pick salami. Each salami master knew about only one part of the production process.
  • In 2008, the first Asian Pick office was opened in Japan, Tokyo

Egy kis Túró Rudi történelem – természetesen angolul https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/turo-rudi-an-unrivalled-hungarian-delicacy/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 22:02:31 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/turo-rudi-an-unrivalled-hungarian-delicacy/ Túró Rudi is a really popular Hungaricum. For some Hungarians who spend a longer period of time away from Hungary, going without Túró Rudi can be a worse experience than simply being homesick. They miss it so much that they spare no effort or expenses to get hold of their beloved and craved for snack.

Just a few figures to show the popularity of the product: Túró Rudi consumption is about 33 pieces per capita in Hungary. This, of course, doesn’t mean that everybody eats as many as this, some eat more some eat fewer, but it’s only a minority who don’t eat any at all. If you put every Túró Rudi produced annually in a single line it will reach from Budapest to the North Pole. The quantity of milk used for producing Túró Rudi yearly would fill two 50-metre-long Olympic size swimming pools, and Hungarians spend about twenty-two billion HUF on Túró Rudi a year.

In the beginning

The story of Túró Rudi dates back to 1954, when three Hungarian dairy experts went to a two-week tour to the Soviet Union to study the dairy industry and saw a product there that can be considered the ancestor of its Hungarian counterpart. The Russian product was a rectangular bar of curd, covered with dark chocolate coating. Its coating was thinner and the filling was sweeter. Though it was love at first sight with the product, it took almost twelve years to develop the perfect recipe of the Hungarian Túró Rudi and production started in 1968 only.

The story of the name

If we tried to translate Túró Rudi word by word into English it would be something like “Curd-cheese-stick”. The “Rudi” in the name comes from the Hungarian “rúd”, which translates into rod or bar (and is also a nickname for the name “Rudolf”). The name was invented by Sándor Klein, a lecturer at the Budapest University of Technology. The choice of the name raised a bit of a controversy as people thought it was vulgar and had pornographic associations, so Túró Rudi had to start its career without any advertisements. But the name stayed anyway, and throughout the 1970s, the product turned out to be highly successful.

What is it made of?

Túró Rudi is made with curd, which may remind English-speaking people of something eaten by Little Miss Muffet along with whey while sitting on a tuffet. They may find the combination of chocolate and curd weird, because they tend to think that chocolate and curd don’t fit together. But as soon as they taste the snack they usually fall in love with it after the first bite. Túró Rudi’s special and unrivalled taste is really addictive. Once you taste it, you will become dependent on it and you will just crave for more. The basic (plain, “natúr”) bar comes in two sizes: the classic 30-gram (1.1 oz) bar and the larger (“óriás”, giant) 51 g (1.8 oz) bar. There are differently-flavoured varieties, with e.g. apricot, strawberry or plum jam or even hazelnut in the curd. The plain bar can be bought with dark chocolate or milk chocolate outer coating.

The packaging

The packaging has had the distinctive red dots on it since the very beginning. Since that time Túró Rudi’s appearance has changed many times but the original brand always appeared with red dots on its package giving it its nickname: Dots. (Pöttyös). The red polka-dots are readily associated with Túró Rudi by its regular consumers. Pöttyös is the best known brand and many say that their Túró Rudi is the best. Though there are many similar curd products on the market in many sizes and flavours, the use of the name of Túró Rudi is only allowed for two companies in Hungary.

Túró Rudi around the world

The Austrian company Landfrisch sells its version of Túró Rudi, admittedly copied from the original one, under the name of Landfrisch Rudi. Túró Rudi also exists in China as Túró Kiittyy. In Poland it’s called Danio Batonik. In Russia and in many post-Soviet states, the original version of the product is available in a rectangular and slightly softer form with a sweeter taste than the Hungarian one. In Slovakia it’s sold under the name of Dots.

Túró Rudi as part of culture

The Hungarian band 100 Folk Celsius have a song about Túró Rudi, which was a popular hit for a long time. Túró Rudi is the name of the Red Baron in the Hungarian translation of Richard Scarry’s children’s books, and believe it or not Túró Rudi has entered into art as well. Marcus Goldson, an English painter, regularly uses the packaging of Túró Rudi for his paintings. He said: “I saw an old lady who was feeding her two dogs with Túró Rudi from her hands. The sight was so beautiful that I painted it. Since then, I have used the packaging of Túró Rudi for several paintings. Wherever I see dots I’m always associating them with Túró Rudi. But this is not the only reason why I use it. I think there is no more unique Hungarian specialty like this. Wherever I have been in the world, I haven’t found a similar sweetness.”

What a praise for our beloved snack! It couldn’t have been put any better.

A NEED módbeli segédige használata https://www.5percangol.hu/nyelvtan_tananyagok_modbeli_segedigek_modals/a-need-modbeli-segedige-hasznalata/ Tue, 27 May 2025 05:17:41 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/a-need-modbeli-segedige-hasznalata/ A NEED egy igen fura szerzet!

I need water! – Vízre van szükségem.
I need to drink water!

You don’t need to worry about it! I’ll take care of everything.  – Nem kell aggódnod emiatt! Majd én gondoskodom mindenről!

Ilyenkor, tehát amikor a NEED úgy viselkedik, mint egy sima ige, akkor természetesen kérdezni és tagadni is ugyanúgy kell, mint bármilyen más ige esetében, tehát a megfelelő segédige (do, did, stb.) használatával. Nézzünk erre is példákat:

I don’t need your help. I can do it alone! – Nincs szükségem a segítségedre. Meg tudom csinálni egyedül.
Sheila doesn’t need to take part in the exam.  – Sheilának nem kell részt vennie a vizsgán.
You need to learn more if you want to pass the exam. – Többet kell tanulnod, ha át akarsz menni a vizsgán.

My car needs washing.
Ráférne a kocsimra a mosás.
Le kéne mosni a kocsit.

The windows need cleaning.
Az ablakokra ráférne a tisztítás.
Le kéne tisztítani az ablakokat.

My closet needs cleaning.
A szekrényemre ráférne a takarítás.
Ki kéne takarítani a szekrényemet.

NEED(S) + IGE + ING

TIPP:

You needn’t worry about it! I’ll take care of everything.

You didn’t need to prepare lunch for me. – Nem volt szükséges ebédet főznöd nekem.

Tehát a használt szerkezet a sima Past Simple!

b)    Ha a NEED módbeli segédige, akkor pedig így

You needn’t have prepared lunch for me. – Nem kellett volna ebédet főznöd nekem.

Ebben az esetben a használt szerkezet a NEED(N’T) + HAVE + ige 3. alakja

Amint a példákból is láthatod a két múlt idejű mondat jelentése hasonló, azonban van különbség is a kettő között: a ’You needn’t have prepared lunch for me.’ mondatban az is benne van, hogy te ennek ellenére csináltál nekem ebédet. Mindemellett a NEED(N’T) HAVE + ige 3. alakja szerkezet ritka a mai beszélt angol nyelvben.

Pálinka, Unicum, szóda – mit isznak a magyarok? https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/palinka-unicum-szoda-mit-isznak-a-magyarok/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 08:19:52 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/palinka-unicum-szoda-mit-isznak-a-magyarok/

In Budapest, there’s more to cheers than just wine and beer. In the city, three drinks reign supreme: palinka, Unicum and soda water. These three staple beverages have a long, storied history in Hungary. Palinka, known as “firewater,” is not a drink for the faint of heart, boasting an alcohol content between 40 and 50 percent. Next up, the bitter tasting Unicum is a concoction created using 40 different herbs as per a centuries-old family recipe. Finally, the stalwart soda water, now found in every bar, restaurant and café, is a vital part of Budapest’s history and culture. Grab a drink with us as we discover the secrets behind the spirits of Hungary.

————————–

(upbeat music)

– [Narrator] You’re in Budapest. And you feel like having a drink. There’s ***, gin, rum, lemonade,

but this would all be a mistake. Because in this city, you have to indulge in a glassful of Hungarian history. Well, actually, three to be exact. Meet Pálinka, Unicum and soda water. Mm.

Without further ado, let’s bring in our experts. First up, Zoltan who heads up the House of Hungarian Pálinka in Budapest.

“Pálinka is a strong spirit. It is 100 percent fruit distilled. Pálinka is deeply woven into the fabric of Hungarian society. Everybody knows what it is. And the history of Pálinka began in 1300s when the Queen and the King of Hungary were all suffering from gout. They stumbled upon this earlier version of Pálinka, which they used to cure themselves. It is made from a huge variety of fruits, apricots to plums to cherries to pears to apples.”

– [Narrator] Now we’ve heard it’s quite strong. The usual alcohol content is typically between 40 and 50 percent, some of them 60 percent. Some of them even higher. Can your Unicum beat that, Sándor?

“We can’t beat it, but we can match it because we also have 40 percent. Really, Unicum is a bitter herbal liquor; there’s roughly 10 million Hungarians, and we sell yearly 4 million bottles. It was invented in 1790 by my ancestor. I am the sixth generation.

– [Narrator] See this doctor was the physician to the Emperor of Austria-Hungary. And when the Emperor had a bad stomach.

“My ancestor made him Unicum, which is made of 40 different kinds of herbs and spices. The recipe’s a secret, so I can tell you that, for example, we use vanilla or ginger. OK, I told you two. That’s enough.”

– [Narrator] And for you non-drinkers, there’s soda water. A staple on Hungarian tables. This is László and his father.

– [Narrator] Thank you, gentlemen.

No wonder László knows his stuff. It was in Hungary where the large scale production

of soda water started. Shall we taste them? Bottom’s up, gents.

– That was strong.

– That’s a good drink.

– That was great.
