Legend has it that in 1687 the villagers of Mohács managed to defeat the Turkish army by scaring them away with the help of horrible wooden masks. It is however, more likely, that the tradition arrived about a decade later with the Croatian settlers, whose descendants still play an active part in the festivities. Very similar masks and costumes are found in Bulgaria, parts of Switzerland, Italy and Spain, indicating links with an ancient, pagan ritual associated with spring fertility celebrations.

Mohács, located about 200 km south of the capital, is the best-known Carnival location in Hungary. The six-day-long festival starts on the Thursday before Shrove Tuesday (27^th February to 4^th March in 2014) with the main parade held on Sunday afternoon, 2^nd March. This tradition is acknowledged by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the masquerades, folk music and dance performances, children’s activities, gastro events and handicraft fairs attract several thousand visitors.

The busos, wearing big sheepskin costumes and horned wooden masks make an impressive entrance: they arrive in rowboats from across the Danube and parade through the city, making noise with cowbells and rattles, to scare away winter. Some of them arrive riding fantastical motorized or horse-drawn vehicles. Their helpers, the ‘Jankele’, are groups of children roaming the streets, dressed in rags and wearing stockings for masks, who carry sacks filled with rags to give a playful beating to the girls. In the evening the celebrations concentrate around the huge bonfire in the main square of Mohács, where a coffin symbolizing winter is burned, while over 500 busos dance around in a circle, making an even bigger racket, just to make sure that winter will definitely not come back.

The frightening, devil-like creatures preserve, in fact, ancient folk traditions, as each mask is unique: the skills of carving and painting them are passed down from generation to generation. The festival also features a children’s costume contest, while the art of mask carvers and other craftspeople can be witnessed live. Buso masks are also available as souvenirs unique to Mohács. Other costumes appearing in the parade are the priest, the devil, the old man and woman, and carved animal masks, such as the bull, the boar and the monkey.

This carnival tradition is constantly shaped by the buso groups, which are still based on family ties or strong friendships. The members of each group meet regularly throughout the year to discuss preparations, costumes, parade routes. The masked busos are almost exclusively male, women are occasionally allowed but are expected to pretend they are men while wearing the costume. The children and women of the buso groups are welcome in the parade in their Croatian (sokác) national costume. Since only a black and white cloth mask covers their faces, they are called “pretty busos.” The buso groups are in constant rivalry, trying to come up with new ways to entertain the crowds, while preserving the traditions at the same time.

Mit kell tennetek?

Regisztráljatok a versenyre a writingcontest.languagecert.hu oldalon (ahol egyébként több fontos információt is találtok a heti nyereményekről és a fődíjról is) és amikor készen álltok a Short Story megírására, nyissátok meg a Feladatok oldalt. Vigyázzatok, mert az oldal megnyitása után csak akkor tudtok visszalépni, ha nem kezdtetek el írni. Ha már elkezdtétek az írást, akkor be is kell fejeznetek a megadott időkereten belül, mivel nem fogtok tudni visszalépni a feladathoz.  

És íme néhány tipp, egy sikeres Short Story megírásához, amivel már neki tudtok állni a verseny-feladatoknak:

You may be asked to write a short story for a student magazine or for a competition. Sometimes you will be given one sentence from the story and instructed to use this as the first line or last line. Don’t change the sentence in any way.

Use your imagination. Your story should be original so your reader will want to finish the story to find out what happens.

Work out the plot carefully before you start to write.

It is usually easiest to write a story which is based on your own experience, but don’t be afraid to change the details slightly or invent new parts if this helps to make the story more interesting.

Keep it simple. Don’t make the plot too complicated or far-fetched. A simple plot with few characters is usually better than a complicated plot with lots of characters.

Divide your story into clear paragraphs.

Recount events in chronological order where possible and use a good range of narrative tenses.

Use direct speech for what your characters say.

Use linking words to sequence events and to signal time changes.

Use vivid vocabulary to make your story interesting. Try to use words that paint a picture for your reader.

Short stories require informal or neutral language – the important thing is to have a story that keeps the reader interested.

Give your story a title.

Check your writing for errors when you have finished.

It doesn’t matter what you write about: It may be easier if you write from personal experience, but if you have a good imagination, use it! For example, you could write about passing your driving test.

HOW TO COMPLAIN, AND WRITE A LETTER OF COMPLAINT

Everyone has consumer rights. You have the right to know what you will receive before you pay for a product or service. When you are not satisfied, you have to make a complaint to get your money back or to have the product replaced.

BEFORE COMPLAINING

Review what happened and think about your options and rights. Consider the facts of the case, and what you want to happen. If you are not sure what your rights are, or how to proceed, contact a consumer group and discuss the situation. Talking with such an organization may help you decide how to handle the problem. Pay attention to all printed information you have about the case, such as ads you responded to, brochures, warranty, guarantee, all letters between you and the business and any other papers you received from the company, including agreements, instructions, receipts and billing statements. If you signed a contract, read it carefully and ask the company for explanations of anything you don’t understand. The contract or warranty may limit your options or provide you with certain rights. Decide what you want from the company, such as repair or replacement of the item, a refund, an exchange, a credit, a correction of the company’s records, or the payment of damages. Consider whether a compromise would be acceptable. It may be easier to resolve the complaint if you agree to a settlement that falls short of a full refund.

COMPLAIN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

The sooner you complain, the better your chances for a satisfactory settlement. Some store refund policies allow you to return items if you do so within a few days. If you wait too long to return the item you will lose the right to get your money back. In addition, it can be difficult to defend your position if you wait a long time to complain.

HOW TO GET STARTED

First of all, you have to clearly present your problem. If you fail to communicate effectively, it will be more difficult to resolve the complaint. When you contact the company, have all the relevant information at hand: a description of the item, any date to help the company identify your purchase (receipt, billing statement, purchase order number, billing statement, invoice, etc.). Explain clearly and briefly what’s wrong and what you want the company to do.

Do not get emotional: speak calmly and politely. If you make the complaint handler’s job harder by getting angry, that person is likely to respond negatively to you.

Make notes about all conversations you have about the complaint, including the names of everyone at the company you spoke to, when you spoke to them and what they said.

You can complain by phone, in-person or by mail. As a general rule:
1.    Phone first to tell the company about the problem and to try to resolve it.
2.    Go to the company to return the purchase or when there is a need to meet with someone to examine the item, receipts or statements.
3.    Write letters as soon as you realize it will take a while to get the problem resolved

WRITING A COMPLAINT LETTER

Sometimes problems can be resolved with one call or visit. But when you realize that you are going to have problems with your complaint, start putting things in writing. Sometimes businesses ignore complaints until they see them in writing.

Letters are important for these reasons:
•    To create a written record of your complaint with the company.
•    To preserve your rights under law.
•    To make sure the business understands your side of the story.
•    To lay the groundwork for a future legal case or defense.
•    To let the company know you are serious about pursuing the matter.

If your first letter does not bring a response, send a second and contact someone higher up in the company. If the salesperson can’t help you, ask to speak to a supervisor or store manager, and then the owner or the company’s headquarters.

In most cases, you do not need to send letters by certified or registered mail. However, if the company has ignored your letters or claims it never received them, consider paying for a mail receipt that will provide proof that delivery was made.

On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, we were about 5 hours out of Frankfurt, flying over the North Atlantic.

All of a sudden the curtains parted and I was told to go to the cockpit, immediately, to see the captain. As soon as I got there I noticed that the crew had that “All Business” look on their faces. The captain handed me a printed message. It was from Delta’s main office in Atlanta and simply read, “All airways over the Continental United States are closed to commercial air traffic. Land ASAP at the nearest airport. Advise your destination.”

No one said a word about what this could mean. We knew it was a serious situation and we needed to find terra firma quickly. The captain determined that the nearest airport was 400 miles behind us in Gander, New Foundland.

He requested approval for a route change from the Canadian traffic controller and approval was granted immediately — no questions asked. We found out later, of course, why there was no hesitation in approving our request.

While the flight crew prepared the airplane for landing, another message arrived from Atlanta telling us about some terrorist activity in the New York area. A few minutes later word came in about the hijackings.

We decided to lie to the passengers while we were still in the air. We told them the plane had a simple instrument problem and that we needed to land at the nearest airport in Gander, New Foundland, to have it checked out.

We promised to give more information after landing in Gander. There was much grumbling among the passengers, but that’s nothing new. Forty minutes later, we landed in Gander. Local time at Gander was 12:30 PM …. that’s 11:00 AM EST.

There were already about 20 other airplanes on the ground from all over the world that had taken this detour on their way to the US.

After we parked on the ramp, the captain made the following announcement: “Ladies and gentlemen, you must be wondering if all these airplanes around us have the same instrument problem as we have. The reality is that we are here for another reason.”

Then he went on to explain the little bit we knew about the situation in the US. There were loud gasps and stares of disbelief. The captain informed passengers that Ground control in Gander told us to stay put.

The Canadian Government was in charge of our situation and no one was allowed to get off the aircraft. No one on the ground was allowed to come near any of the aircraft. Only airport police would come around periodically, look us over and go on to the next airplane.

In the next hour or so more planes landed and Gander ended up with 53 airplanes from all over the world, 27 of which were US commercial jets.

Meanwhile, bits of news started to come in over the aircraft radio and for the first time we learned that airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon in DC.

People were trying to use their cell phones, but were unable to connect due to a different cell system in Canada. Some did get through, but were only able to get to the Canadian operator who would tell them that the lines to the U.S. were either blocked or jammed.

Sometime in the evening the news filtered to us that the World Trade Center buildings had collapsed and that a fourth hijacking had resulted in a crash. By now the passengers were emotionally and physically exhausted, not to mention frightened, but everyone stayed amazingly calm.

We had only to look out the window at the 52 other stranded aircraft to realize that we were not the only ones in this predicament

We had been told earlier that they would be allowing people off the planes one plane at a time. At 6 PM, Gander airport told us that our turn to deplane would be 11 am the next morning.

Passengers were not happy, but they simply resigned themselves to this news without much noise and started to prepare themselves to spend the night on the airplane.

Gander had promised us medical attention, if needed, water, and lavatory servicing. And they were true to their word.

Fortunately we had no medical situations to worry about. We did have a young lady who was 33 weeks into her pregnancy. We took really good care of her. The night passed without incident despite the uncomfortable sleeping arrangements.

About 10:30 on the morning of the 12th a convoy of school buses showed up. We got off the plane and were taken to the terminal where we went through Immigration and Customs and then had to register with the Red Cross.

After that we (the crew) were separated from the passengers and were taken in vans to a small hotel. We had no idea where our passengers were going. We learned from the Red Cross that the town of Gander has a population of 10,400 people and they had about 10,500 passengers to take care of from all the airplanes that were forced into Gander!

We were told to just relax at the hotel and we would be contacted when the US airports opened again, but not to expect that call for a while. We found out the total scope of the terror back home only after getting to our hotel and turning on the TV, 24 hours after it all started.

Meanwhile, we had lots of time on our hands and found that the people of Gander were extremely friendly. They started calling us the “plane people.” We enjoyed their hospitality, explored the town of Gander and ended up having a pretty good time.

Two days later, we got that call and were taken back to the Gander airport. Back on the plane, we were reunited with the passengers and found out what they had been doing for the past two days.

What we found out was incredible…..

Gander and all the surrounding communities (within about a 75 kilometer radius) had closed all high schools, meeting halls, lodges, and any other large gathering places. They converted all these facilities to mass lodging areas for all the stranded travelers. Some had cots set up, some had mats with sleeping bags and pillows set up.

ALL the high school students were required to volunteer their time to take care of the “guests.” Our 218 passengers ended up in a town called Lewisporte, about 45 kilometers from Gander where they were put up in a high school. If any women wanted to be in a women-only facility, that was arranged. Families were kept together. All the elderly passengers were taken to private homes.

Remember that young pregnant lady? She was put up in a private home right across the street from a 24-hour Urgent Care facility. There was a dentist on call and both male and female nurses remained with the crowd for the duration.

Phone calls and e-mails to the U.S. and around the world were available to everyone once a day. During the day, passengers were offered “Excursion” trips.

Some people went on boat cruises of the lakes and harbors. Some went for hikes in the local forests.

Local bakeries stayed open to make fresh bread for the guests. Food was prepared by all the residents and brought to the schools. People were driven to restaurants of their choice and offered wonderful meals. Everyone was given tokens for local laundry mats to wash their clothes, since luggage was still on the aircraft.

In other words, every single need was met for those stranded travelers.

Passengers were crying while telling us these stories. Finally, when they were told that U.S. airports had reopened, they were delivered to the airport right on time and without a single passenger missing or late. The local Red Cross had all the information about the whereabouts of each and every passenger and knew which plane they needed to be on and when all the planes were leaving. They coordinated everything beautifully.

It was absolutely incredible.

When passengers came on board, it was like they had been on a cruise. Everyone knew each other by name. They were swapping stories of their stay, impressing each other with who had the better time. Our flight back to Atlanta looked like a chartered party flight. The crew just stayed out of their way. It was mind-boggling.

Passengers had totally bonded and were calling each other by their first names, exchanging phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses.

And then a very unusual thing happened.

One of our passengers approached me and asked if he could make an announcement over the PA system. We never, ever allow that. But this time was different. I said “of course” and handed him the mike. He picked up the PA and reminded everyone about what they had just gone through in the last few days.

He reminded them of the hospitality they had received at the hands of total strangers.

He continued by saying that he would like to do something in return for the good folks of Lewisporte.

“He said he was going to set up a Trust Fund under the name of DELTA 15 (our flight number). The purpose of the trust fund is to provide college scholarships for the high school students of Lewisporte.

He asked for donations of any amount from his fellow travelers. When the paper with donations got back to us with the amounts, names, phone numbers and addresses, the total was for more than $14,000!

“The gentleman, a MD from Virginia, promised to match the donations and to start the administrative work on the scholarship. He also said that he would forward this proposal to Delta Corporate and ask them to donate as well.

As I write this account, the trust fund is at more than $1.5 million and has assisted 134 students in college education.

“I just wanted to share this story because we need good stories right now. It gives me a little bit of hope to know that some people in a faraway place were kind to some strangers who literally dropped in on them.

It reminds me how much good there is in the world.”

“In spite of all the rotten things we see going on in today’s world this story confirms that there are still a lot of good people in the world and when things get bad, they will come forward.

Most cable providers take orders by phone on a toll-free number and send the set-top box via post to your home for self-installation, along with the contract to be signed and returned. If your home has a cable TV socket available, there is no need to send a technician as setting up cable TV is quite simple nowadays and the service is switched on remotely. Make sure you do activate the cable card though, or the set-top box won’t be able to connect to the network. Many shows are subtitled for the hard of hearing, which is also very useful for language learners. You can also improve your English if you pick a service that can record TV shows, so you can replay the parts that are difficult to understand. If you want to cancel your subscription, you can do so by phone, and the set-top box needs to be returned to the provider.

Internet subscription

The two main types of internet are cable internet and DSL (digital subscriber line). Whichever you pick you will need a cable modem or a DSL modem that is plugged into a wall socket. You can either buy one or pick a provider that offers modems for rent or for free, depending on your package. More and more people need wireless internet as well for their tablets or phones, so make sure you discuss the option of getting a Wi-Fi router from your provider. If you would like to use two desktop computers or connect your laptop for a faster connection than through Wi-Fi, an ADSL splitter will sort the problem. Depending on the status of the network, connecting your home to the internet may take days or weeks, which can be frustrating. In such cases the best solution is to buy a USB stick, also called a dongle, which provides broadband internet on a pay-as-you-go basis.

What is a Full Breakfast?

Throughout Britain and Ireland the Full breakfast is very popular. It is traditionally served at breakfast time, but it is also popular at other times, usually replacing lunch. Rarely is it now served every day of the week, reserved instead for the weekend or on vacation in hotels and Bed and Breakfasts, where no stay would be complete without one. Each country in the UK and Ireland also have their own choice of accompaniments, it is up to the individual just how much they want on their plate and their preferences. You may find the following:

• A Full English Breakfast may have Black Pudding, Baked Beans and Fried Bread.
• A Full Scottish, as above but may also have, Potato Scones (Tattie Scones), Haggis and Oatcakes.
• A Full Irish – Again, as above but may also have White Pudding and Soda Bread.
• A Full Welsh – Laver bread or laver cakes. These are neither bread nor cakes but are made with seaweed, the cakes seaweed cooked with oatmeal.
• An Ulster Fry is not dissimilar to a Full English but may also have soda bread and is served again, throughout the day.

The origins of the breakfast are unclear and believed to originate in the rural England as a sustaining meal to carry workers through a long morning. Though a ‘Full Breakfast’ is universally known and understood other terms used include – A Fry Up, A Full Monty, and in Ireland it is sometimes known as a Chub.

The key components of an English breakfast include:

• bacon
• sausages
• eggs
• tomatoes
• baked beans
• mushrooms
• potatoes
• fried bread
• black pudding

Usually the eggs are fried, but for a lighter, healthier option they can be poached. The bacon can also be fried, but traditionally it is more often grilled until slightly crispy. A fresh tomato, halved and then grilled until browned, is much nicer than the tinned tomatoes or tinned baked beans so often substituted and hot toast completes the meal. Traditionally it is served with tea (with milk), although coffee and orange juice are usually also offered.

A variant on the above, called the “Full English Breakfast”, is a more substantial version which additionally contains a selection of the following:

• one fried egg
• one English-style sausage
• two rashers of crispy fried bacon
• a portion of fried mushrooms (browned)
• two slices of fried black pudding (a type of sausage made with pig’s blood)
• half a tomato, fried until brown
• one slice of fried bread (a slice of white bread fried in oil, preferably the oil used to cook the bacon)

A klasszikus recept szerint a birka szívét, máját és tüdejét felvágják, majd összekeverik zabbal, hagymával, az állat faggyújával és fűszerekkel, végül pedig az egészet beletöltik a birka gyomrába.

Mi az a LAVER BREAD?

A “laver bread” pedig egy hús mellé köretként fogyasztott különös étel, ami egy sötétlila, tengeri hínárszerű növényből készül. Állítólag 5 órán keresztül rotyogtatják, mígnem összeáll egy sűrű, fekete zselés masszává.

for the pastry:

·         250g plain flour

·         Pinch of salt

·         60g butter

·         60g lard

·         90g mature Cheddar cheese, grated

for the filling:

·         60g caster sugar

·         3 tablespoons cornflour

·         1 level teaspoon ground cinnamon

·         4-5 crisp apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

·         Beaten egg, for glaze

·         24cm enamel pie plate

Set the oven to fairly hot, Gas Mark 6 or 200C.

To make the pastry: Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Add the butter and lard and rub it in until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the Cheddar. Add about 3-4 tablespoons water and mix to just bind the pastry together. Chill the pastry for about 15 minutes.

To make the filling: Tip the sugar into a bowl and stir in the cornflour and cinnamon. Add the sliced apples and turn to coat them in the mixture. Cut the pastry in half and roll out one portion on a lightly floured work surface to cover the base of the pie plate. Arrange the apple slices on top, leaving a narrow rim clear around the edge. Roll out the other portion of pastry, brush water over the pastry rim and place the pastry over the top. Press the edges together well to seal them and trim around the rim of the plate. Press around the edge to crimp it. Make 2-3 small holes in the top of the pastry to allow the steam to escape during cooking. Brush the top with egg glaze.

Bake the pie in the centre of the oven for 25-35 minutes, until the pastry is golden, and the apples feel tender when a skewer is pressed through one of the holes in the top. Remove the pie from the oven and serve it hot, warm or cold. Not suitable for freezing.

–       250g couscous

–       6tbsp virgin olive oil

–       Zested rind and juice of 1 lemon

–       1 bunch spring onions, sliced

–       2 sticks celery, chopped

–       350-500g cherry tomatoes, halved

–       200g pack feta cheese, cubed

–       2-3tbsp freshly chopped chives, plus chives for garnish

1.     Tip the couscous into a bowl and pour over 400ml boiling water. Mix well, then leave it to stand for about 5 mins, stirring it occasionally to keep the grains of couscous separate.

2.     Stir in the olive oil, lemon zest and juice and salt and pepper into the couscous and mix well.

3.     Stir in the spring onions, celery, cherry tomatoes and feta cheese. Spoon into serving bowls and garnish with chives to serve.

Our tip: The couscous can be made the day before up to the end of step 2, then stir in the vegetables and cheese on the day of serving.
