“Don’t Stop Me Now” is a song by English rock group Queen, featured on their 1978 album Jazz, written by vocalist Freddy Mercury, it was recorded in August/September 1978 in Nice, France. The single reached number 9 in the UK charts but only number 86 in the US. It was the first single by Queen to be released on a cassette tape. Previously, each single was released on a Vinyl Record or 7″. In 2005, this song was voted as “The Greatest Driving Song Ever” by viewers of the BBC television program Top Gear, but the trophy given to Roger Taylor (initially to be given to Brian May, but the producers reconsidered when they heard May hates the song) was mis-engraved, reading Stop Me Now.

The 2004 horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead (Haláli hullák hajnala) featured the song near the end of the movie. The song is played on a jukebox in the Winchester pub as three of the main characters circle around the zombie former barkeep while hitting him over the head with pool cues in rhythm with the song, leading Shaun to utter the line; “David, kill the Queen!” Also, during the song, various things happen to the beat of the music, such as lights flashing. Thematically, the song is ironic, as its upbeat feel completely contradicts the protagonists‘ no-win scenario when it accidentally is played on jukebox.

Christmas in Hungary

In Hungary the Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve. In addition to the usual decorations, we also put fondant candies on and under the tree. According to the Hungarian tradition, the Christmas presents are brought by Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve. As for Santa Claus, he visits on December 6 bringing sweets and presents for those well-behaved children who put their clean shoes on the windowsill the night before.

Typical Hungarian Christmas dishes include: fish soup or bouillon, stuffed cabbage, roast turkey with stuffing, and the famous poppy seed or walnut rolls.

The poppy seed or walnut roll is a traditional Hungarian pastry, mostly eaten during the winter holidays. It is basically a sweet bread, known as “bejgli” in Hungary. During the last few decades other variants (such as chestnut, plum jam, prune, or even cocoa) have become popular, too.

Did you know? Poppy is widely consumed in many parts of Central and Eastern Europe. The sugared, milled mature seeds are eaten with pasta, or they are boiled with milk and used as filling or topping on various kinds of sweet pastry. In countries where eating poppy seed is not so common, people think that it can be dangerous or even lead to a positive drug-test.

Another typically Hungarian Christmas sweet is ”szaloncukor” (literally: parlour candy), which is a type of sweets, traditionally associated with Christmas in Hungary. It is usually made of fondant, covered by chocolate and wrapped in shiny coloured foil. It is often used as decoration on Christmas trees, hung on with strings or small metal hooks.

Fondant candies originally came in a few flavours (vanilla and strawberry for example), but now there is a wide variety of different kinds of candies, including jelly, coconut, hazelnut and lots of other flavours.

As far as Christmas fairs are concerned, among the many Budapest Christmas markets, one of the most popular ones is held on Vörösmarty Square, in the heart of the city’s 5^th district. This traditional Budapest Fair is a great place to get your unique Christmas presents, as here you can always find some exclusive and hand-made art products and all kinds of decorations, made with authentic techniques. While you’re looking for the perfect gifts or winter souvenirs, you can enjoy a variety of programs, listening to folk music, taking part in a Christmas tree decorating competition or sipping mulled wine and feasting on the traditional Hungarian dishes and cakes from the open kitchens around the square. If you haven’t been to this fair yet, you should try “lángos” (deep-fried bread dough, usually topped with garlic, sour cream and cheese) and “kürtös kalács” (hollow, cylinder shaped pastry, baked over an open fire with ground walnut or other sweet coatings), but you will have an extra hard time choosing what to eat this time.  A novelty in recent years has been the even wider selection of culinary delights – stuffed cabbages, grilled meat and fish, strudels and the other Christmas delicacies.

Thanksgiving is probably the second biggest holiday in the United States after Christmas. It is time to give thanks, especially for the abundance of food after the harvest and is marked by a great feast. The turkey – thought to be first domesticated by Mesoamericans long before being introduced into Europe by the Spanish, and much later proposed as the symbol of the United States by Benjamin Franklin, instead of the bald eagle – has become the traditional main course of this event. It is often filled with stuffing and served with mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, various vegetable dishes, and pumpkin pie for dessert.

Thanksgiving traditionally dates back to 1621, in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. This was the landing place of Mayflower, a ship full of Pilgrims, seeking freedom from religious persecution back in England. They managed to survive a very difficult first year only with the help of the natives, and so they gave thanks and celebrated together after the first harvest with a three-day feast.

Thanksgiving weekend sees also some of the heaviest traffic of the year as millions of Americans return home to be with their families. Houses are decorated with earthy fall tones and cornucopias or horns of plenty. 

Meaning: If you do something like a headless chicken, you do it very quickly and without thinking carefully about what you are doing. 

Usage: It is usually used in continuous tenses. 

Origin: It comes from the phrase “to run like a headliess chicken” and from the fact that sometimes when the head of a chicken is cut off, it will run around in circles aimlessly until it dies. 

MIKE THE HEADLESS CHICKEN

Mike the Headless Chicken also known as Miracle Mike, was a Wyandotte chicken that lived for 18 months after his head had been mostly cut off. As lots of people thought it was a hoax, the bird’s owner took him to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City to prove that Mike is a living creature.

… but how could this happen?

On September 10, 1945, farmer Lloyd Olsen of Fruita, Colorado, United States, had his mother-in-law around for supper and was sent out to the yard by his wife to bring back a chicken. Olsen chose a five-and-a-half-month-old cockerel named Mike. The axe missed the jugular vein, leaving one ear and most of the brain stem intact.

After Olsen literally butchered his beheading job, Mike was still able to balance on a perch and walk clumsily. He even attempted to preen and crow, although he could do neither. After the bird didn’t die, a surprised Mr. Olsen decided to continue to care permanently for Mike, feeding him a mixture of milk and water via an eyedropper. He was also fed small grains of corn.

A new, beheaded life

When used to his new and unusual condition, Mike could easily get himself to the highest perches without falling. His crowing, though, was less impressive and consisted of a gurgling sound made in his throat, leaving him unable to crow at dawn. Mike also spent his time preening and attempting to peck for food with his neck.

Rise to fame

Once his fame had been established, Mike began a career of touring sideshows in the company of such other creatures as a two-headed calf. He was also photographed for dozens of magazines and papers, featuring in Time and Life magazines.

Mike was on display to the public for an admission cost of twenty five cents. At the height of his popularity, the chicken earned US$4,500 per month (worth $48,000 in 2010 dollars) and was valued at $10,000. Olsen’s success resulted in a wave of copycat chicken beheading, but no other chicken lived for more than a day or two.

The end of the story

In March 1947, at a motel in Phoenix on a stopover while traveling back home from tour, Mike started choking in the middle of the night. As the Olsens had left their feeding and cleaning syringes at the sideshow the day before, they were unable to save Mike and therefore he choked to death in the motel.

British Tea Time, High and Low

One of the things that come to mind when we try to characterize the British is TEATIME.

Most of us imagine it as lots of aristocrats sipping tea from dainty cups among an array of expertly sliced cucumber sandwiches and scones. We are not far off the track because this widely popular hot drink has been an integral part of English life since the late 1700’s and teatime has become a well-known English tradition, both low and high.

Afternoon tea or low tea is a small meal around 4 p.m. that consists of tea, of course, and afternoon tea sandwiches, crustless specifically, freshly baked scones, crumpets and a selection of other pastries.

We can thank the upper classes for this afternoon tea tradition because it originated among them in the 18th century. They could afford meals in between meals and invited friends over for the treat, serving delicacies next to the drink itself, which eventually became a custom. The typical afternoon tea food can be sweet, savory and a combination of the two, but usually consists of snacks packed with calories.

High tea or “meat tea”, on the other hand, is an even more nourishing full meal served at around 6 p.m. It includes meat, bread, side dishes and dessert next to the tea. It originated among the working class who did not have time for snacks and a chat in the early afternoon when they were at work. So as soon as they finished working they had a hearty meal with tea, an early supper or dinner that was their main meal of the day. A traditional high tea menu would include cold cuts, shepherd’s pie, baked beans on toast and kidney pie, cakes, custards, sweets and pickles.

Devonshire Cream Tea is one of the most popular afternoon tea types and there is a special Devonshire cream tea menu, which consists of tea, scones, strawberry jam and rich clotted cream. They say this specific tea tradition is older than any other teatime custom. This tea menu combination was first served in the 11^th century by monks in gratitude to the workers who helped them rebuild their monastery.

There’s nothing more delicious, or quintessentially English, than a cream tea of scones, jam and cream. Here’s how to make the perfect English scone.

Preparation:

1. Preheat the oven to 200 C.
2. Sieve into a bowl 900 g plain flour with 3 tsp baking powder.
3. Add 56 g of caster sugar and mix.
4. Break the butter into cubes, add rub into the dry ingredients.
5. Keep going until the mixture is the consistency of breadcrumbs.
6. Whisk 3 eggs together with 450 ml of milk. Gradually stir into the dry ingredients until it comes together as a soft dough.
7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead lightly.
8. Use a floured rolling pin to roll out to about 2.5cm thick.
9. Cut out the scones and lay onto a baking sheet lined with grease proof paper.
10. Brush with the left-over egg wash and place in oven for 15 minutes.
11. Serve with jam and cream.

Triple Chocolate Cake

FOR THE CAKE:

·         350g butter, softened

·         350g self-raising flour

·         350g caster sugar

·         6 medium eggs

·         Few drops vanilla extract

·         3 tablespoon milk

·         100g white chocolate, melted

·         100g dark chocolate, melted

FOR THE GANACHE:

·         300ml whipping cream

·         200g dark chocolate, broken into pieces

·         Few drops vanilla extract

·         White chocolate stars, for decoration

·         3x20cm round sandwich cake tins, buttered, floured and base-lined

1. Set the oven to 190°C or Gas Mark 5.

2. Tip the butter, flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and milk into a bowl and beat well until smooth. Divide the mixture evenly between 3 bowls. Stir the white chocolate into one of the bowls and spoon it out into a cake tin and spread out. Stir the milk chocolate into another portion and spoon into another tin and stir the dark chocolate into the final portion, then spread it out in the last tin.

3. Place the cakes in the oven, with 2 on the upper shelf and 1 on lower shelf. Bake the cakes for 25-30 minutes until they have risen and feel just firm to the touch. The cake on the bottom shelf may need an extra 5 minutes as, depending on the oven, it may not cook as quickly as the top ones. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tins for about 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.

4. To make the ganache: Bring the creamto the boil and pour it over the chocolate. Stir until chocolate melts and mix well, preferably using a stick blender. Stir in vanilla extract to taste. Leave the mixture to cool. Once cold, whisk the ganache until it’s a spreading consistency.

5. Place the white chocolate cake on a serving plate and spread some ganache on the top, then place the milk chocolate cake on top. Spread some ganache over that, then place the dark chocolate cake on the top. Spread the remaining ganache over the top and sides of the cake. Sprinkle over some white chocolate stars. Keep the cake in a cool place until serving.

The cake layers may be packed individually in freezer bags and frozen for up to 3 months. Allow the cake layers to defrost before assembling the cake with the ganache. It’s not recommended to freeze the complete cake.

Cat survives 52 days without food

The new owners of a house in the Netherlands had a shock this weekend when a very skinny cat appeared and ran out as they opened the front door of their home for the first time. 5.whodunnit/whodunit – murder mystery – rejtélyes gyilkosság

Ez egy olyan krimi, ahol csak a legvégén derül ki, hogy ki a gyilkos.

Ezeket a szavakat akkor használjuk, amikor két dologról beszélünk, tehát mindig kettő dologra vonatkoznak, és főnevekkel együtt használjuk őket.

Nézzünk is meg rögtön egy-két példát:

Both movies are very good.– Mindkét film nagyon jó.
Neither restaurant is expensive. – Egyik étterem sem drága (a kettő közül).
We can go to either place. I don’t really mind. – Bármelyik helyre mehetünk a kettő közül), nekem mindegy.

BOTH OF …/NEITHER OF …/EITHER OF …

Amennyiben a fent említett szavakat OF követi, úgy a főnév mindig többes számban van az OF után, illetve mindig ki kell tenned a következők közül valamelyiket:
– the (határozott névelő)
– these/those (mutató névmás)
– my/your/his/her/our/your/their (birtokos névmás)
– Mary’s (birtokos szerkezet)

Tehát az a szerkezet, hogy „Both of movies” nem jó, kétféleképpen mondhatod helyesen: „Both movies” vagy „Both of the movies”.

Az, hogy mikor melyik szerkezetet használod a BOTH kifejezéssel (tehát of-os vagy of nélküli) gyakorlatilag mindegy, csak figyelj arra, hogy ne keverd őket!

Ha két emberről beszélsz, használhatod a következő szerkezeteket (ebben az esetben az OF használata kötelező!):

both of us – mindketten (mi)
both of you – mindketten (ti)
both of them – mindketten (ők)
neither of us – egyikünk sem (mi kettőnk közül)
neither of you – egyikőtök sem (ti kettőtök közül)
neither of them – egyikőjük sem (ők kettőjük közül)
either of us – bármelyikünk (mi kettőnk közül)
either of you – bármelyikőtők (ti kettőtök közül)
either of them – bármelyikük (ők kettőjük közül)

Ahogy azt a példákban is megfigyelhetted, a BOTH/BOTH OF után a főnév, így az ige is többes számban van: both girls are pretty = both of the girls are pretty

A NEITHER és az EITHER után a főnév és az ige is egyes számban van:

Neither restaurant is expensive.– Egyik étterem sem drága (a kettő közül).
Either restaurant is expensive. – Bármelyik étterem drága (a kettő közül).

Ha OF-os szerkezetet használsz, akkor pedig a főnév mindenképpen többes számban lesz, az ige azonban lehet egyes vagy többes számban is:

Neither of the restaurants is/are expensive. – Egyik étterem sem drága (a kettő közül).
Either of the restaurants is/are expensive. –Bármelyik étterem drága (a kettő közül).

A BOTH/NEITHER/EITHER szavakat használhatod önmagukban is:

I can’t decide between the two dresses. I like both. – Nem tudok dönteni a két ruha között. Mindkettő tetszik.
’Is your girlfriend British or American?’’Neither, she is Australian.’ – ’Barátnőd brit vagy amerikai?’ ’Egyik sem, ausztrál.’
’Do you want cake or ice-cream?’ ’Either. I like both, so I don’t really mind.’ – ’Sütit vagy fagyit kérsz?’’Bármelyiket. Mindkettőt szeretem, szóval mindegy.’

Végül pedig jegyezd meg a következő kifejezéseket, mert nagyon gyakoriak:

Nagyon fontos, ne keverd össze! Ahogy beszéltük, a fenti szerkezetek csakis 2 dolgora vonatkozhatnak, ha több dologról van szó, akkor az ANY/NONE/ALL szerkezeteket használjuk. Figyelj csak:

KÉT DOLOG: 

There are two good restaurants in the neighbourhood. You can try either of them.
Két jó étterem is van a közelben. Bármelyiket kipróbálhatod a kettő közül.

We tried two restaurants. Neither of them were good. /Both of them were really good.
Két éttermet is kipróbáltunk. A kettő közül egyik sem volt jó./Mindkettő nagyon jó volt.

TÖBB, MINT KÉT DOLOG:

There are many good restaurants in the neighbourhood. You can try any of them.
Sok jó étterem van a közelben. Bármelyiket kipróbálhatod.

We tried a lot of restaurants. None of them were good./All of them were really good.
Sok éttermet kipróbáltunk. Egyik sem volt jó./Mindegyik nagyon jó volt.
