One of the greatest fighters in the history of boxing, Ali retired in 1981 after losing to Trevor Berbick in his 61st career bout.

Ali, who called himself “The Greatest,” was married four times and had nine children, including daughter Laila, who also became a professional boxer. Ali and his fourth wife, Yolanda “Lonnie” Williams, had been married since 1986.

Born Cassius Clay on Jan. 17, 1942, Ali first stepped in the ring at age 12 in his hometown of Louisville, Ky., after his bicycle was stolen and a police officer suggested he learn how to box. Ali went on to become one of the most successful athletes and revered public figures in history.

Acclaimed for his quick, dancing style as a fighter, Ali also blended a unique mix of political activism and personal conviction that won him international recognition outside of the ring.

After winning 100 of 108 amateur fights, Ali took home an Olympic gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. He later allegedly chucked the medal into a river after a waitress at a soda fountain in Louisville refused to serve him because he was black.

At age 22, he stunned the larger Liston, beating the champ in seven rounds in Miami to win his first heavyweight title. In their next match in 1965, Ali floored Liston with a hard, quick blow minutes into the bout and retained his crown when the referee stopped the fight.

With one Olympic gold medal and a heavyweight belt to his credit, Ali soon began making headlines for his religious and political beliefs.

He converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali in 1964. When he refused in 1967 to serve in the U.S. Army because of his religious convictions, Ali got sharp criticism from a nation that was raw from the dividing forces of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. Ali was stripped of his heavyweight title in 1967, fined $10,000 and sentenced to five years in prison for draft evasion. That conviction was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1971.

On Feb. 15, 1978, Ali lost his heavyweight title to Leon Spinks, but beat Spinks seven months later to reclaim the crown. He finished his career in 1981 with a record of 56 wins (including 37 by knockout) and five losses.

Though gone from the ring, Ali entrenched himself in charitable work and humanitarian causes — from serving as a United Nations “Messenger of Peace” to supporting hunger and poverty relief.

The father of such memorable quotes as “The man who has no imagination has no wings” provided one of the lasting images of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Before a worldwide audience, he made a surprise appearance at the Games’ opening ceremonies, where, his hand shaking from Parkinson’s tremors, he took the Olympic torch and lighted the stadium cauldron. And at the London Olympics in 2012, he was again a participant in the opening ceremonies.

In 2005, he was awarded the highest U.S. civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Tyson Fury defeated Wladimir Klitschko by unanimous decision Saturday to end the Ukrainian’s 9 1/2-year reign as heavyweight champion and fulfil his father’s prophesy from the day he was born.

Born three months early and weighing just one pound (0.45 kg), Fury wasn’t given much chance to live, but John Fury told doctors it was his destiny to live and become heavyweight champion of the world. He named the second of his six sons Tyson, after Mike Tyson, one of the most famous champions of all times.

Twenty-seven years later, the 2.09-meter (6-foot-9) Tyson Fury, who was born in a travelling gypsy family and comes from a bloodline of boxing champions on both sides of his family, finally lived up to his name.

“It’s something I’ve been working on for my whole life,” Fury said. “I’m bred to be a fighter.”

It wasn’t just by being the first man for 11 years to beat Wladimir Klitschko that Tyson Fury proved he is far from being a typical heavyweight.

Fury produced a major upset by defeating Klitschko on points at ESPRIT Arena in Düsseldorf on Saturday night, claiming the world heavyweight championship in the process, with both the victory and the celebration being far from routine.

Over the course of 12 rounds, Fury gave Klitschko all he could handle and more, dominating the contest in a way that the giant Ukrainian has never experienced before.

Then, he celebrated his triumph by serenading his wife Paris and the crowd with a rendition of Aerosmith’s love ballad “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing,” just as he had promised before the bout.

It has been quite a few days for Fury, who learned on Friday that he is to become a father for a third time and controlled the fight throughout with a sense of belief and movement that few had predicted.

For Klitschko looked like one of the most unbeatable fighters in boxing, right up until the night when he was outduelled, outmuscled and outpointed by Fury, the giant challenger from England.

“I was bigger, stronger, fitter and faster,” Fury said, and he was right on all counts although he had gone into the fight as an underdog, with experts roundly confident that Klitschko, who ruled the division for 11 years, taking on all-comers and dispatching them with technical efficiency and ease, would retain his heavyweight title.

After taking the WBA, IBF and WBO belts and pocketing £4million, he thanked Jesus and dedicated his win to travellers everywhere. He said his success was rooted in his gypsy heritage and devout Christian faith.

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Al will be named "King of Boxing" at the 50th convention of the World Boxing Council, which will begin on Monday in Mexico’s Caribbean coastal resort of Cancun. The "crowning" of Ali will be one of the main events at the convention celebrating the 50th year of the WBC, which is headed by Mexican Jose Sulaiman. The WBC said that Ali’s proclamation would take place at a ceremony attended by about 100 world champions and ex-champs. "It will be a recognition for an entire life of greatness. There’s nobody in the world who has done what Ali has done," Sulaiman said.

Sulaiman, who has been WBC president since 1975, said that Ali deserved the honour "which he needs more" at this point in his life. The former world champion has suffered from Parkinson’s Disease for years. The WBC was founded in 1963 by then-Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos.
