There are lots of marvels from the architectural field all around the world including the Pyramids of Giza, the Taj Mahal, and The leaning tower of Pisa, which have withstood the tests of time and have astonished the modern architectural geniuses. But there are many modern architectural marvels such as the Burj Khalifa, the Infinity Tower in Dubai and the Three Gorges Dam in China that give strong competition to the ancient marvels. Japan has some of the best engineering minds in the world when it comes to not only electronics, but also in the field of construction. Some of the most unbelievable construction marvels can be seen in the Land of the rising sun. But nothing can beat the Eshima Ohashi Bridge that seems more like a rollercoaster rather than a bridge.

This bridge in Japan is not only a construction marvel, but also somewhat looks like it is fun to ride on it. Japan has managed to make driving a car on that bridge both picturesque and fun for people who like a bit of adventure.

The bridge that connects Matsue and Sakaiminato is built over the Lake Nakaumi and instead of the usual bridges which open up in the middle to let a ship through, this bridge is actually built high in the middle so that the ships can pass through without the need of opening the bridge. There is a steep climb from one side and a descent that will give minor heart attacks to the best of drivers while going down.

Silver selfie generation: Woman in her 80s takes picture of herself stuck in overturned car

Mention the selfie generation and you might think of teenagers and people in their 20s. But that’s not always the case as this woman in her 80s shows.

A couple married for more than 60 years found the amusing side of getting stuck in their car when it turned over in Bel Air, California. When her car rolled onto its side, rather than panicking that she was stuck inside, the lady asked her husband to pass her phone so that she could take a selfie. And her husband, who managed to get out of the car, appeared amused as he posed for pictures next to the vehicle with his wife still inside.

The couple, who have been married for 60 years, according to Mail Online, were not injured in the collision. Passers-by stopped to help the couple and the wife was helped out of the car by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Both were said to be in good spirits despite their accident.

Chicken hit by car doing 70mph but you’ll never guess what happened next

A plucky poultry played chicken with a car travelling at 70mph (112 km/h) – and the car came off worse.

Driver Huang Lingyong, 31, was at the wheel when the bird-brained pedestrian suddenly crossed the road in front of him. But instead of squashing the chicken and leaving it as roadkill, the bird smashed a huge hole in his bonnet, where it stayed until the car stopped moving.

Huang said: "I braked because I am an animal lover and didn’t want to harm the chicken. But it was too late. I heard a sickening thud and I thought the chicken had gone to meet his ancestors. I stopped the car, got out and walked around to the front. There was a hole in the bodywork and the chicken wedged inside. I thought it must be dead but then I heard a cluck-clucking and bent down to look closer. It was a little shaken up and its feathers all ruffled, but otherwise OK."

He added: "It seemed to me to be a very good advert for the durability of chickens and a very bad one for the quality of the car that I was driving. I took some video with my phone and uploaded the pictures on the web and I was not surprised when there was a lot of feedback from people who shared my opinion of the car."

The car manufacturer, a Japanese company, have insisted the bumper of the car, which was so easily destroyed by poultry, is not part of the original design, but is actually a cheap Chinese copy.

Can a city really ban cars from its streets?

The German city of Hamburg has announced plans to become car-free within the next two decades. It is an ambitious idea, but city officials obviously feel that the personal motorcar does not fulfil a function that walking, biking and taking public transport cannot. The goal of Hamburg’s project is to replace roads with a green network of interconnected open areas covering 40% of the city. According to the official website, parks, playgrounds, sports fields, allotments and cemeteries will be connected to form a network, which will allow people to navigate through the city without the use of cars.

Banishing the car from urban areas is becoming a common trend in many European cities. London imposes a “congestion charge” on private vehicles entering the city centre during peak hours. The Danish capital Copenhagen is building bicycle superhighways radiating out from the city centre. These developments combined may make worrying reading for driving enthusiasts. Is the era of the personal car over?

In the century since the Ford Model T was introduced in 1908, global vehicle numbers have swollen to well over a billion. But according to recent research, the growth spurt may have peaked. Professor Michael Sivak, at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute has just published a series of reports looking at car use, and its environmental impact. His calculations show that “motorisation” in the United States might have reached a peak in 2008, and that the figures have been on the decline since. That holds even when the global economic downturn, and its negative impact on car sales, is taken into account.

Sivak speculates that a number of factors could be contributing to the trend, probably making it more than a passing fad. They include increased telecommuting (or working from home) and the movement of populations back to city centres. In China, Beijing and Shanghai are looking at plans to limit the number of new vehicles being registered to curb growth. It’s a movement more cities are looking towards, particularly in the US. “I think it is fair to use our data to look at similar trends in say, France or England, but I am very careful not to extrapolate this to developing countries,” says Sivak.

Another way to examine the issue is to look at the number of households without a car. In the United States, the percentage going motor-less is increasing. “New York, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, each have more than 30% of households without a light duty vehicle,” says Sivak. In fact, the figures show that 56% of households in New York (which top the list) don’t have a car. “I think that will be surprising to most people. It was surprising to me, and I am in the business.”

Perhaps it is not so surprising in cities like New York, which have extensive public transport networks, and where the costs of parking can far outweigh the cost of a purchase of a subway ticket. But it’s not the full story. In Los Angeles, only 12% of households are car-less, and in affluent San Jose, heart of Silicon Valley, it is only 5.8%.

Craziest coupé on the road: Mechanic’s full-size replica of classic children’s car does 0-60mph in 17 seconds

Most of us grew out of our passion for pedalling a toy car around the garden by the time we started school. Not so John Bitmead, who has created an adult version of classic children’s car the Cozy Coupé. The petrolhead, 48, his brother, Geoff, and friend Nigel Douglas spent five months converting a Daewoo Matiz into the oversized toy.

‘I love setting myself a challenge, and once I’d got the idea in my head, I was determined to see it through,’ he said. ‘We were chatting one day about how more people have probably driven a Cozy Coupé than any other kind of car – and it snowballed from there.’ He has copied every detail on the coupe from the yellow roof to glassless windows and oversized drinks holder. It cost a total of £35,000 to build – though the standard-sized version will set you back about £50. The ‘toy’ runs on unleaded petrol and can go from zero to 60mph in 17 seconds. ‘We took it on the motorway once, but I’m too scared to do it again in case we cause an accident,’ Mr Bitmead added.

Mr Douglas, who is managing director of Attitude Autos in Oxfordshire, where the other two work, said: ‘We tried to create our version of a classic car. We saw so many of them in people’s front gardens we thought it would be great to make one for grown-ups wanting to relive their youth.’

Drive like a superhero: Batmobile complete with flame thrower up for sale

Here’s one vehicle guaranteed to make you stand out from the crowd. Comic book fans with a spare £90,000 in the bank can drive like the Caped Crusader with their very own road legal Batmobile.

The slick black replica, which comes with a fully operational flame thrower and hydraulic suspension, is set to be auctioned on November 30 at Mercedes-Benz World in Brooklands, Surrey. Inspired by the car used in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, the rear-wheel drive Batmobile can reach a speed of 60mph (96 km/h) in less than five seconds.

Edward Bridger-Stille, from Historics auction house, said: ‘The car is like a dream for any Batman fan. It brings traffic to a standstill with people wanting to be photographed by it. It is a smooth driving car however there’s not a lot of all-round vision – it’s a bit like a fighter jet in that sense.’ He added: ’This vehicle is believed to be one of the best after-production, fully road-legal models ever made.’

Earlier this year, the original TV Batmobile was sold for £2.3million.
