If you’ve been binging true crime docs on Netflix like The Tinder Swindler or Tiger King 2 and you’re itching for more, fear not. Netflix just released a trailer for their upcoming documentary series, Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives. The limited series is directed and produced by Chris Smith, who also brought us Tiger King and Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, so you know it’ll be good.

The four-part series is set to premiere on March 16th and follows the real story of Sarma Melngailis, an all-star in the vegan community and owner of famous New York City raw vegan restaurant, Raw Food and Wine.

The restaurant was highly successful and frequented by celebrities like Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson. In the trailer, there are numerous interviews with former restaurant staff who, at first, have nothing but good things to say about working with Sarma, but it all comes tumbling down when she falls in love and quickly ties the knot with a man she met online, Anthony Strangis. He immediately promised to make all of her dreams come true and even said he would make her and her Pitbull dog immortal.

The series will show the relationship between Sarma and Anthony and their crimes, including stealing nearly $2 million from the restaurant and staff, until a final facedown with police at a Domino’s Pizza (before they had any vegan options).

But was all of this new husband, Anthony Strangis’ doing? Or was it just as much Sarma’s plan? Find out in less than a month when this strange and shockingly true documentary premiers.

Who Was “Miranda” of the Miranda Warning?

Even if you’ve never had your own brush with the law, you no doubt know the Miranda warning. Somehow, maybe through the mass quantity of Law & Order and CSI-type shows, those words have seeped into our brains:

“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me?”

Those words are the result of the Miranda v. Arizona Supreme Court trial of 1966. Three years before, an 18-year-old Phoenix woman reported to police that she had been kidnapped, taken to the desert, and raped. The woman was able to provide details about the car her kidnapper drove, and those details took police to Ernesto Miranda. Though the woman couldn’t identify Miranda in a lineup, police took him into custody and performed an interrogation anyway. The grilling resulted in Miranda signing a confession.

Miranda later said he was forced into confessing because he was never made aware of his constitutional right to say nothing. His case wound up in front of the Supreme Court in 1966; they ruled that nothing Miranda “confessed” to could be used to try him because he was not properly educated on his rights. Almost immediately following the trial, the Miranda warning became a mandatory part of arrests.

That decision wasn’t popular with everyone, though. Even Richard Nixon was a vocal denouncer of rights-reading, as he believed that informing criminals of their rights would make police less effective and predicted that crime would skyrocket.

And what became of Miranda? The case was retried without the confession in 1967, but it turned out the jury didn’t need one to convict. Miranda was sentenced to up to 20 years in prison but got out in 1972. For a while, he made a living signing Miranda cards (small cards with the required saying printed on them) and selling them for $1.50. He had been out of prison for less than four years when he was killed in a bar fight in Phoenix in 1976 at the age of 36.

to trick: is a more informal word for deceive. It can also mean to deceive someone as a joke or for entertainment. 

to fool and take in: are used when someone is trying to deceive someone in a way that makes them look stupid or careless. 

If someone pulls the wool over your eyes: they deceive you in order to prevent you from discovering something. 

to cheat someone: means the same as to deceive someone. Cheat can also mean to dishonestly try to gain an advantage in a test or game. 

to rip off, swindle, and con: mean to deceive someone in order to get money from them. These words are used mainly in spoken English and informal written language.

defraud is used when referring to the crime of doing this. 

to swindle: to obtain money or property by fraud or deceit 

fraud: intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with something of value or to surrender a legal right 

to deceit: the act of causing someone to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid 

to thimblerig: to cheat by trickery, one who manipulates the cup in thimblerig 

thimblerig: a swindling trick in which a small ball or pea is quickly shifted from under one to another of three small cups to fool the spectator guessing its location
