The force is strong in Cheltenham: UK’s first Jedi school opens

A long time ago Once a week in a galaxy far, far away Gloucester, Star Wars enthusiasts are meeting up to learn how to fight like Jedi Knights.

LudoSport, which describes itself as a Light Saber Combat Academy, has opened its first school in the UK and is teaching fans of the sci-fi series how to wield the signature weapon of the Jedi order and their Sith counterparts. Padawans – or ‘students’ to us Earthlings – use a specially-designed sword with a weightless blade to mimic the lightsaber, which unfortunately doesn’t exist.

The Italy-based company has been operating for eight years and has now had the opportunity to expand after British musician and martial arts enthusiast Jordan Court trained as an instructor. ‘I know people who do fencing and other similar sports and I thought there had to be a group that did lightsaber sport,’ said Mr (Master?) Court, 34. ‘I had been looking for a group like that for a couple of years. That’s how I came across LudoSport.’

Though many of the participants are Star Wars fans, Mr Court stressed that it’s a form of combat non-fans can enjoy too and he’s looking for it to be taken seriously as a sport. Classes are being held at St Luke’s Church Hall in Cheltenham every Tuesday between 7pm and 11pm.

Jabba the Hush: Man who played vile Star Wars villain now working as a LIBRARIAN

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Toby Philpott played vile Star Wars villain Jabba the Hutt. Now the movie puppeteer stops others jabbering in his latest job as a librarian. Toby, 67, climbed inside the slimy intergalactic gangster to operate his left arm, head and flicking tongue in the sci-fi classic Return of the Jedi in 1983. But 30 years after working on the third in the hit movie series, with Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, he works in Cardiff Central Library.

Toby said:  “It feels like I almost lead a double life. The Star Wars films have a following like no other in history so I do get asked to speak at conventions. But I can go shopping and no one ever recognises me as Jabba – which is good. But people who find out love talking about it and I don’t mind.”

Toby, who runs computer courses at the library, has also worked as a street performer in Mexico and a clown in London. But his big break came as a puppeteer for Muppets creator Jim Henson. And it was while working for him that he landed the job as loathsome slug Jabba, who enslaves Princess Leia, played by Carrie Fisher, and drools over her in a very disturbing way. She eventually escapes by killing him. But Jabba slid back into the franchise in the 1999 prequel, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Pusztul a Star Wars palota

Olasz örökségvédelmi hivatalnokok fújtak riadót egy sor Holywood-i filmben – többek közt a Star Wars-ban is – szereplő palota romló állapota miatt azt követően, hogy leeső faldarabok kis híján rázuhantak egy turistacsoportra.

A kulturális örökségvédelmi hatóságok sürgős támogatási igényt jelentettek be az olasz kormánynál a Nápoly közeli Caserta-ban található korábbi Bourbon királyi palota állagmegóvására, amelyről azt mondják, Olaszország válasza volt Versailles-ra. A múlt héten egy látogató családra majdnem rázuhant a mennyezet párkány egy darabja a Mission Impossible III. című filmben és a Da Vinci Kód Angyalok és Démonok című előzményfilmjében Vatikáni helyszínként megjelenő hatalmas palota homlokzatáról.

Paola Raffaela David, a régió egy vezető kulturális örökségvédelmi tisztviselője elmondta, hogy az a tény, hogy a hatalmas palotáról darabok hullanak le, igen komoly. „Az utóbbi 10 napban a palota külső burkolatának két darabja omlott le a márványt a homlokzathoz rögzítő vastartók állagromlása következtében. Komolyan aggódunk, mivel a letört mennyezet párkány olyan épületrészről hullott le, amelyet 30 évvel ezelőtt volt felújítva.” A tisztviselő felhívta a kulturális minisztériumot arra, hogy végezze el az épület bejáratainak szükséges vizsgálatait, amelyeken naponta több ezer látogató halad át.

Becslések szerinthét millió euró (5,66 millió font) szükséges a javítási és felújítási munkák elvégzéséhez – amely összeg nehezen előteremthető, mivel Olaszországot kormánykiadás csökkentés és megszorítások sújtják.

„Megpróbáljuk előteremteni a pénzt. Kötelességünk megvédeni ezt a műemléket, amely a világörökségi helyszín” – mondta Georgio Angelini, Campania Régió Kulturális Örökségvédelmi Hivatalának igazgatója.

A palotát a Bourbon uralkodó, III. Károly építtette az 1750-es években, és Versailles-al kívánt versenyre kelni. Európa egyik legnagyobb palotájában 1200 szoba található, és majd egy évszázadig tartott az építése.

A Star Wars első részében: a „Baljós árnyakban”, és a második részben a „Klónok támadásában” a palota a Natalie Portman által alakított Amidala Királynő palotájaként jelenik meg. Múlt novemberben a palotát ideiglenesen be kellett zárni, mert egy nemzeti ünnep alkalmával nem volt pénz a 150 fős személyzet fizetésére.
