Donut is an alternate spelling of doughnut. Some dictionaries point out that donut is rarely used outside the United States. All of them recognize doughnut as the main spelling, as do some of the more popular style guides. Doughnut might be the spelling you should use if you want to be sure you’re not making a mistake.

Doughnuts: the thing no stereotypical law enforcement officer can be seen without. Think of The Simpsons‘ Chief Wiggum. Or, if you’re a fan of looking beyond stereotypes, think of Twin Peaks‘ agent Dale Cooper, who appreciated the importance of doughnuts even though he favored cherry pie and a good cup of coffee. You get the picture – doughnuts have their place in popular culture.

They’ve also been on the mind of nutrition specialists and doctors, who generally advise against eating too many of these sweet and tasty rings of dough fried in oil. But seeing how we’re not the stereotypical girls and boys in blue here, or doctors for that matter, our interest in doughnuts comes from a completely different place. Apparently, there are two ways to spell the word—doughnut and donut—and it’s sometimes not completely clear which of the two spellings is the correct one.

Donut or Doughnut – Which Spelling Is Correct?

The simple answer to this question is they both are. Doughnut is the original spelling, which means it’s the older one, having appeared in the early nineteenth century. If you pick up a dictionary, any dictionary, you’ll find doughnut.

But it’s also very likely you’ll find donut, too. It might be listed as an alternate spelling, and some dictionaries might make it very clear that it’s a spelling mostly used in the United States. Donut, the simpler spelling of the word, first appeared around sixty years after the longer version, and it started gaining traction by the first half of the twentieth century.

Style guides, however, will occasionally list doughnut as the preferred spelling, so it might be better to forgo the shorter spelling unless you’re sure the donut in your writing will not be flagged as a mistake.

Why Is Donut Spelled Two Ways?

What is a doughnut, or donut, if you will? It’s a small lump of dough, which was originally fried in fat. So you can see where the “dough” in doughnut comes from. The “nut” part is actually a different way of saying “a small lump.” Originally, the name of the treat was dough boy.

Donut is a simplification of the original spelling, and as such, it’s completely in the spirit of the American version of the English language. Noah Webster, the godfather of American lexicography, was a strong supporter of spelling reform. If you look at American English and British English today, you’ll see that the former has a strong tendency to prefer the simpler spellings of words.

Lastly, it’s possible to find a correlation between the rise of the simpler spelling and the rise of Dunkin’ Donuts. But while they might get the credit for popularizing it, Dunkin’ Donuts didn’t invent the simpler spelling. In fact, bakeries have been using it since the 1920s.

Prep Time: 10 mins

Yields: 12

Ingredients

• 350g strong white flour
• Pinch of salt
• 30g caster sugar
• 50g margarine
• 7g fast-action dried yeast
• 65ml warm milk
• 65ml warm water
• 1 large egg
• cinnamon
• Vegetable oil to deep fry

Sift flour and salt into a large bowl. Add the caster sugar, and mix together well. Add the margarine, and rub into the flour. Add the dried yeast and mix together well. Heat milk and water in a pan. Heat until warm to the touch. Make a well in the flour, and pour in a beaten egg, followed by the warm milk. Mix together to form a dough. Your dough should look like this. Turn dough out on a floured surface. Knead for about 10 minutes. Place the dough in a bowl. Cover and place it in a warm place. Leave for about one hour. Knead dough on a floured surface. Knead for only a few moments. This is ‘knocking back the dough’. Roll out the dough. Roll to about 1.5 cm thickness. Cut out circles of dough. Cut out the centres of the circles. Cover and put somewhere warm. Leave for around 20 minutes. Place caster sugar in a tray and add some cinnamon. Mix together well. Heat some oil in a large pan. Carefully add the doughnuts. Fry for about 2 minutes on each side. Turn over halfway through. Remove using a slotted spoon. Add to the doughnuts the sugar. Fully coat and shake off any excess.

When he came back home from sailing he told his mom about the recipe, and the rest is history.

The book is The Wreck of the Titan. In addition to having the same outcome (crashing into an iceberg and sinking), the fictional “Titan” and the real-life “Titanic” had other bizarre similarities. They were both over 800 feet long. They both were known as “unsinkable”. They both sunk in the North Atlantic. They both didn’t have enough lifeboats. They both had 3000 passengers. There are some big differences too. Most importantly, more people survived from the real Titanic than from the Titan.

As you may know all too well by now, writing a resume with all the right keywords, the best information about yourself, and just enough exaggeration is already a major obstacle standing between you and an exciting new job. To make things worse, there’s a chance it’ll go unnoticed at the bottom of a recruiter‘s overloaded inbox. But it looks like one dude has come up with a brilliant solution for both of those problems: delivering his resume in a box of donuts. Really.

Lukas Yla, a 25-year-old Lithuanian marketing professional looking for work in San Francisco, said he’s already made 40 of the donut-resume deliveries to recruiters at area marketing agencies and tech firms by posing as a Postmates delivery person. On the outside, the packages look like a box of fancy donuts, which as you can imagine, is easily enough to get someone’s attention. On the inside, the recipient will find not just a few of the sugary dough rings, but Yla’s resume front and center. Genius, right?

Yla said it was “a bit odd” to pose as a delivery worker at first, but that the strategy is paying off. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he’s already landed several job interviews.

“I had 10 interviews so far and I haven’t delivered donuts to all the companies I admire and love what they’re doing yet,” he said. “Recruiters, marketing pros and people in general love this kind of approach, it’s something you didn’t expect, fun and out of the box.”

Yla said the intense competition for tech and marketing jobs in San Francisco compelled him to come up with a strategy to stand out.

“I was looking for the most direct way to reach decision makers at the companies,” he said via email. “I thought, that I might fail competing only on ‘resume’ level with other candidates that have work experience in San Francisco.”

Well, he’s certainly getting recruiters’ attention now, thanks to all those delicious donuts. We wish him the best of luck.

Personal statement or profile

A personal statement gives the employer a little insight into who you are. It typically includes information such as:

– what you are currently doing for employment or education

– what it is about the job you are applying for that attracted you to it

– your reason for wanting to change jobs

– your career aspirations.

The personal statement is usually an employer’s first impression of who you are, so don’t be shy – sell yourself. Keep it concise – three or four sentences will usually do.

Skills

You can create a list of specific skills. For example:

– customer service

– sales and marketing

– machine operation.

– leadership

– teamwork

– confident and able communicator

Work history

Work history is usually given chronologically, which means you list your most recent job first and work back. Start by stating:

– when you held the position

– the job title/position

– the name of the employer

– where the job was located.

Beneath this, list the tasks you performed. You can also list any notable achievements.

Move Over Cupcakes … Hello Cro-Dough

Move over cupcakes, goodbye whoopee pies there’s a hot new bakery product in town. Cronuts – a cross between a croissant and a donut – have taken America by storm since being invented by the Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York. And now the pastry sensation – renamed the cro-dough – has crossed the Atlantic and can be snapped up at Rinkoff Bakeries in London.

Jennifer Rinkoff, whose great grandfather first founded the 100-year-old bakery, is the woman to thank for bringing the tasty treat to British shores. Speaking about the birth of the cro-dough, Jennifer comments: "I saw what the Dominique Ansel was making in America and I thought no one’s making them in London, so I looked on Twitter and thought this looks really simple to make.  We have the dough here, we make croissants and danish pastries, so I went into the bakery and it took me about three days to perfect the Cro-dough – to make the height, the flavours – and it escalated from there. I put one picture of a Cro-dough on Twitter and it just blew up. Time Out magazine produced an article about me and customers have been coming from all over the country; some customers even took Cro-doughs back to Belgium".

To begin with Jennifer made just three trays of cro-doughs but demand has grown and grown and now the bakery produces hundreds. Jennifer says: "We started off with three trays (18 on a tray), but we’re now making 200 a day and selling out. We’re not able to make more because volume is not a thing for us. Sometimes we sell out at 11am and we have to make a second batch".

Hungry customers can choose from three flavours – custard, which is the most popular, as well as raspberry coulis and apple with chocolate. Describing the process of making a cro-dough, Jennifer comments: "The dough needs to be made a day or two before, it is then cut out with a machine, left for another day and then fried. Because our bakery runs 24/7 we’re always monitoring the production. It’s labour intensive; we have to inject the filling, cover and finish the Cro-dough. And frying is probably the trickiest part as you want to get a good height and colour".

Jennifer is a 4th generation Rinkoff baker – getting her baking skills from her great grandpa, her dad and his two brothers. Some of their recipes are over 100 years old and the bakery has always been located in the East End of London.
