The Argentina legend – regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all time – reportedly suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest and was left in a serious condition.

Argentine outlet Clarin then reported later on Wednesday that Maradona had passed away.

Maradona was hospitalised earlier this month after undergoing surgery for a blood clot on the brain.

The surgery was successful but, just weeks later, Maradona has passed away.

The news has been confirmed by ESPN Argentina and TyC Sports.

Journalist Cesar Luis Merlo reports that doctors attempted to revive Maradona.

But it seems that the awful news is sadly true: football has lost one of its most legendary players.

Diego Armando Maradona (30 October 1960 – 25 November 2020)

Diego Maradona was an Argentine professional footballer and football manager. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, and by many as the greatest ever.
He was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award.

Maradona’s vision, passing, ball control and dribbling skills were combined with his small stature (1.65 m or 5 ft 5 in), which gave him a low centre of gravity allowing him to manoeuvre better than most other football players; he would often dribble past multiple opposing players on a run. His presence and leadership on the field had a great effect on his team’s general performance, while he would often be singled out by the opposition. In addition to his creative abilities, he also possessed s and was known to be a free kick specialist. A precocious talent, Maradona was given the nickname “El Pibe de Oro” (“The Golden Boy”), a name that stuck with him throughout his career.

An advanced playmaker who operated in the classic number 10 position, Maradona was the first player in football history to set the world record transfer fee twice. First when he transferred to Barcelona for a then world record £5 million, and second, when he transferred to Napoli for another record fee £6.9 million. He played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys during his club career, and is most famous for his time at Napoli and Barcelona where he won numerous accolades.

In his international career with Argentina, he earned 91 caps and scored 34 goals. Maradona played in four FIFA World Cups, including the 1986 World Cup in Mexico where he captained Argentina and led them to victory over West Germany in the final, and won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. In the 1986 World Cup quarter final, he scored both goals in a 2–1 victory over England that entered football history for two different reasons. The first goal was an unpenalized handling foul known as the “Hand of God”, while the second goal followed a 60 m dribble past five England players, voted “Goal of the Century” by FIFA.com voters in 2002.

Maradona became coach of Argentina in November 2008. He was in charge of the team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa before leaving at the end of the tournament. He coached Dubai-based club Al Wasl in the UAE Pro-League for the 2011–12 season. In 2017, Maradona became the coach of Fujairah before leaving at the end of the season. In May 2018, Maradona was announced as the new chairman of Belarusian club Dynamo Brest. He arrived in Brest and was presented by the club to start his duties in July. From September 2018 to June 2019, Maradona was coach of Mexican club Dorados. The Lost Ball

One evening we were playing football with my cousin, Jack, in their garden and the ball went over into the neighbour’s garden. Though we were scared, we went to his door, rang the bell and asked him if he could give us our ball back. “No,” he said angrily “You always kick the ball into my garden. I have enough of it.” We felt helpless. Suddenly, I had an idea. There was a cherry tree behind the house. I looked at it and told Jack “Look at this. We can climb the tree and jump over the fence.” He was a bit afraid “It’s too dark now, we can’t climb now. Let’s do it tomorrow” he suggested.

So the next day we went to the tree early. “Who will climb first?” asked Jack. “You,” I said. He agreed and climbed up the tree and then down into the neighbour’s garden. I followed him and then we were looking under the tree for the ball but we couldn’t find it. “Look, the door of the cellar is open. Maybe the ball has gone down there.” We carefully climbed down the stairs and tried to look around in the dark. We spent a few minutes there and we wanted to give up the search when I looked under a small cupboard and there was the lost ball. But along with the ball was a … gold bar! We quickly took both the ball and the gold bar and ran up the stairs and climbed up the tree again. When we reached our house the TV was on. It was news time. I couldn’t believe my ears when it said that 20 gold bars were stolen from a gold shop. They showed a picture of the gold bars and it was exactly like the one we had found. We quickly told the story to Jack’s mother and she called the police. The police came at once and found the rest of the gold bars in the neighbour’s cellar.

The following day the police inspector came and told us “Thank you, children, for catching the thief. Here is a reward for all of you.”

They are holding glasses and bottles in their hands. I don’t know what they are drinking. People usually like drinking beer when they watch a football match. Football is a ball game in which eleven players play against eleven players from the other team. The aim is to kick or head the ball into the goal. In the goal, there stands a goalkeeper who shouldn’t let the ball into the goal. I think it’s a hard task.

When I was a child I played football almost every day. I went to training regularly and we had matches at the weekend. There were a few boys in the neighbourhood who liked playing football as much as I did. After school when I was ready with my homework we went together to the football pitch nearby and played until it was dark and we had to go home. Nowadays, unfortunately, I don’t have time to do any sports.

We can see three young women and two young men in the picture, so the women outnumber the men. It’s not a typical sight that women watch the football matches. More typically it’s the men who want to watch the matches and the women would rather do something different. In this picture males and females look equally happy to watch the match. They have glasses and bottles in their hands. What they drink is probably beer because it’s the most popular drink at football matches.

Football is a very popular sport you can even say that it is a craze for many. Millions of people play it and watch it all around the world. In the past few weeks, we could watch a lot of football matches because of the World Cup. It is held every four years and while it lasts the majority of people watch it and talk about it. They look forward to seeing their favourite team play and cheering for them. You can watch the football matches not only at home but almost everywhere. There usually are big screens in pubs or in big squares outdoors and people can follow what’s going on together with others. The weather is favourable in summer, so watching the matches is like a community picnic. People sit on the grass, they drink beer or coke and they have a good time. Some people are dressed in their favourite team’s jersey or paint their faces in their team’s colours. It’s an unforgettable experience that comes only every four years so it is not to be missed.

It’s a picture of a craze called football. A couple of young people are sitting in front of a big screen and they seem to be mad about football just like millions of people especially during the time of World Cups. People tend to watch football everywhere they go, in pubs, in the streets and the main topic of conversation seems to be football for weeks on end. Football rules and pushes more important matters into the background. The winner takes it all, but unfortunately, there is only one winner in the end and though it is called the champion you can’t take it for granted that it is the best team. Football is a game of chance and luck sometimes and no matter how good strategy a coach chooses or how much training and work went into the preparation period it doesn’t guarantee that the best team will be the winner. However, it’s always a tragedy for the losing teams’ supporters and leads to a street party for those who support the winning team. Life stops for a while when the national team wins. It’s like a fairy tale and a dream come true for someunderdog teams.

As for genders football is usually men’s interest and their game. There exist women football clubs and women supporters also but it’s rather men and not women who get excited about football. In this picture though there are three women cheering for their team and only two men which is unusual. So gender stereotypes don’t always prove to be true.

As for me, I’m fascinated by football. It’s amazing to see the players play and strive for a goal in unison. It’s a strategy game and a team game at the same time, you cannot win and be the best without the others and individual interests and selfishness should be put aside for a greater goal. The game teaches you to be perseverant to never give up and to play fair. The best football players have an international fame that reaches a big audience all over the world. They are role models for kids who wear jerseys with their heroes’ name on it, they worship them and want to follow in their footsteps. It’s quite a big responsibility for the big names to live up to their reputation. Being a good footballer doesn’t always mean that someone’s personality is also picture perfect, but they should strive to project a positive image in their everyday life far from the football pitches, too.

Though the World Cup is over and we will have to wait four years for the same excitement, football is everywhere. Cheering for the local team can be as exciting as cheering for Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

A bit of European history

The first European Championship was held in 1960, following the idea of UEFA president Henri Delaunay. It was a rough start; recruitment of teams was not flawless, and support for the tournament took time to gain as well. However, in a few decades’ time, the “Euros” (called by that nickname since 1996) have grown to be the second most-watched football tournament in the world, with the last final followed by over 300 million people worldwide

Who gets to compete?

The Euros were initially a contest for the elite of European footballing nations. Although there were qualifiers leading up to the event, the final tournament featured a mere 4 teams in 1960. Four more teams could join starting in 1980, and the finals were expanded to 16 teams in 1996. This year’s tournament features 24 teams for the first time, and includes debutants such as Albania, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, and Wales. The Hungarian national team is returning to the tournament after a 44-year absence.

Battling it out

24 is not an ideal number for sports tournaments, but there is a way to make the Euros work. The group stage will feature six groups of four, with two teams from each group going through to the knockout stage. This year, however, third-ranked teams also get a shot: the four best third-placed sides are added to the list. This leaves 16 teams to battle it out in the round of 16, then the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and the final. So far, Spain and Germany have had the most success at going all the way at the Euros: they are both looking for a record-breaking fourth European title this year. However, France has the best odds at winning according to most bookmakers – and then we haven’t mentioned all the upsets that may happen!

Fancy venues

France is preparing for the big event with locations in 10 different cities across the country. Stadiums in Lille, Bordeaux, Lyon, and Nice are going to be brand new, and plenty of renovation work has gone into other venues as well. The total costs are around 1.6 billion euros. There are going to be a number of special features to check out: the stadium in Lille is the first one in France with a retractable roof, the Stade de France seems to have a floating top, while the metal structures of the Bordeaux grounds actually vibrate as supporters get rowdy (don’t worry: it’s all normal). Some locations, like Parc des Princes in Paris, were used for the most prestigious national and international clashes for decades, while others, such as the one in Lens, overlook the tallest slag heaps in Europe. The final is going to be played in the Stade de France in front of 80,000 fans.

The French connection

Euro 2016 comes with its own set of bells and whistles to fuel the hype in the run-up to the competition. The official opening song of the tournament comes from David Guetta, and it is entitled “This One’s For You”. (Hungarian fans can especially feel like it is for them, since the music video features the Hungarian national team in the very first shot.) The Euros have their official mascot, too: he is Super Victor, a boy with superpowers in a football kit, sporting the French national colours, of course. The colours are also featured in the logo, along with the Henri Delaunay trophy, as well as on the official match ball. The slogan of the tournament, in keeping with French traditions, is “Le Rendez-Vous”, referring to meetings of football lovers from around the world. The French are particularly excited about those encounters: the last time they hosted a major football tournament, they won the world championship on home grounds in Paris.

Did you know?

In the old times, some teams literally needed luck on their side for Euros success. Before penalties were introduced, the 1968 semi-final between hosts Italy and the Soviet Union was decided by a coin toss, after neither team could get the better of the other. Italy called tails, and won their place in the final.

The first Euro to feature penalty kicks was in 1976, and the kicks played a crucial role at the tournament already. Czechoslovakia beat West Germany on penalties to win the tournament, with a certain Antonín Panenka scoring the all-decisive, bold chipped shot that has been imitated countless times ever since.

Recalled from their summer vacation? The 1992 national team of Denmark didn’t seem to mind too much. They were only allowed to participate in that year’s European Championships after Yugoslavia were disqualified because of the ongoing war. However, the Danish outsiders were not the least fazed, and they became the winners after beating world champions Germany in the final.

The highest attendance in the history of the tournament didn’t happen at a final: it took place during a qualifying game. The 1968 match between England and Scotland at Glasgow’s Hampden Park had more than 134,000 supporters in the stands – that could fill the Kiev Olympic Stadium (the venue for the last Euros final) almost twice over!

The Germans have historically had a lot of success in European tournaments, winning the title 3 times. One of football’s most famous sayings was inspired by this winning stint. At the 1996 Euros, England’s loss at home to Germany in the semi-finals prompted English striker Gary Lineker to say, “Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win.” We’ll see if that holds true this time around.

Lionel Messi can now add another title to his long list of accolades, having surpassed Spanish footballer, Raul’s record of 71 Champions League goals. The 27-year-old has accumulated his haul in 91 games for Barcelona in the Champions League, while Ronaldo has scored his 70 in 106 matches. Raul needed 142 appearances to reach 71 strikes.

The Barcelona player had been in a race with Cristiano Ronaldo to overtake the Spanish striker in Europe’s top club competition and his hat-trick against APOEL Nicosia on Nov 25 took him to 74. Ronaldo, with 70 in 106 games, will now try and catch up with his great rival later this season.

Legends such as Pele or Diego Armando Maradona were outstanding when representing their home nation in World Cups, but didn’t collect as much silverware for the clubs they played for. While this is clearly a never-ending debate which will go on for many years to come, the fact that Messi has become the best ever goal-scorer in the most demanding competition in club football is a very strong argument in his favour.

In memoriam Gyula Grosics (1926-2014)

The legendary goalkeeper of the Hungarian Golden Team of the 1950s passed away peacefully today, aged 88. He was famous for developing the “sweeper-keeper” style of play.

Grosics played 86 times for the national team and participated at three consecutive World Cups in 1954, 1958 and 1962. He was member of the gold-winning Olympic team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He earned his nickname ‘Black Panther’ due to the black jersey he was the first to sport on the pitch. His record is amazing: during his time with the national team, they got only 96 goals and scored 258.

His career started at the age of 15, as goalkeeper for the Dorog football club in 1943, and in 1950 he joined the most prestigious club of the time, the Budapest Honvéd. After coming home with a silver medal from the 1954 World Cup, he was accused of treason, finally escaping imprisonment but sent into exile to play for the Tatabánya football club. It was from there that he retired in 1963, giving up football because the Communist regime forbade him to join his favourite club, Ferencváros. He worked as a coach until he retired.

His dream came true though, when Ferencváros signed him on as a tribute on his 82nd birthday. He performed the kickoff in a friendly match against Sheffield United and stood in goal for a few minutes before being substituted.

May he rest in peace.

Football spectators have been spooked by a ghostly figure that appears to run through fans during a match in Bolivia. The unexplained shadow glides quickly through the stands during a game in Hernando Siles Stadium in La Paz, Bolivia, on Thursday night. It even appears to run straight through a barrier at speed.

The video, shot during a television broadcast of the match, has gone viral with internet sleuths sharing their theories on the apparition. This is not the first time an unexplained apparition has been spotted at a South American stadium.

Some Venezuelans believe the ‘ghost’ of their deceased President Hugo Chaves was responsible for saving an otherwise certain goal during an international match against Colombia. A figure can be seen tapping the ball over the goal post.

On 25 November 1953 Hungary played England at Wembley and, although they were Olympic champions and undefeated in three years, no one gave them a chance. This was, after all, an England side that had never lost on home soil to an overseas team. Walter Winterbottom’s side were made up of players with world-wide reputations, like Stanley Matthews, Billy Wright and Stan Mortensen. The Hungarians, on the other hand, were unknown in England. As Wright pointed out to Mortensen as they took to the field that day, the Hungarians did not even have the proper kit. But the pre-match ball juggling of captain Ferenc Puskas – a sight fans and players had never seen before in this country – was an indication of what was to come. England were not merely beaten, but absolutely outclassed.

The visitors brought a new vision of the game to Wembley. Their 4-2-4 system was based on first-time passing by players who ran hardest when they were nowhere near the ball. Hungary waltzed to a 6-3 victory, with Puskas scoring two goals. The defeat caused a complete re-think of the English game and had a lasting effect on all those who witnessed it.

One face in the crowd on that grey November afternoon was a young Sir Bobby Robson. "We saw a style of play, a system of play that we had never seen before," Robson told BBC One’s Football Focus. "None of these players meant anything to us. We didn’t know about Puskas. All these fantastic players, they were men from Mars as far as we were concerned. They were coming to England, England had never been beaten at Wembley – this would be a 3-0, 4-0 maybe even 5-0 demolition of a small country who were just coming into European football.
