Formula One legend Niki Lauda has died at the age of 70, his family have confirmed. The three-time world champion took the title for Ferrari in 1975 and 1977 and then again for McLaren in 1984.

Lauda was badly burned in 1976 in an infamous Formula One crash and later became an airline entrepreneur with Lauda Air. He also underwent a double lung transplant in August last year.

A statement confirmed he had “peacefully fallen asleep” surrounded by his family on Monday.

In deep sadness we announce that our beloved Niki has peacefully fallen asleep with his family,” it read. His unique achievements as an athlete and entrepreneur are and will remain unforgettable. His tireless zest for action, his straightforwardness and his courage remain a role model and standard for all of us. Away from the public, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He will miss us very much, “says the email signed with the Lauda family.

Earlier Austria press reported he was receiving kidney dialysis at a private clinic in Switzerland. Lauda had kidney transplants in 1997 and 2005.

Due to kidney problems, he had to be transferred from the rehabilitation centre to a private clinic for dialysis,” Lauda’s brother Florian said.

At the start of the year Lauda was back in hospital in Vienna with the flu, five months after undergoing a lung transplant.

Lauda, 69, was flown in early January from the Spanish island of Ibiza, where he had been on holiday, to a hospital in the Austrian capital. It was another episode in some long-running health problems for the Austrian.

Lauda suffered horrific burns when pulled from the wreckage of his Ferrari by Arturo Merzario and Guy Edwards 32 years ago. Lauda missed only two races and was back racing just six weeks later, although he lost out on the world title to James Hunt.

The Mercedes non-executive chairman said of the time: “When I had the accident in Germany, it was only a question of a month or a little bit more. Yes, I had burns – I was burned – but I recovered quickly. This time it was really long but I am still here. I have to be honest: no, I was never scared. I was in the hands of excellent specialists. I put my trust in them. I knew that it would be hard, very hard. In these conditions I knew there was only one thing I could do: fight. I did that at every moment, and I am still doing it now.”

In 2008 he married Birgit Wetzinger, who is 30 years his junior and was a flight attendant for his airline. Three years earlier after a previous kidney transplant from his brother had failed, then 26-year-old Birgit successfully donated one of her organs to the F1 legend.

“We had been dating for eight months when I had a kidney problem,” Lauda said in an interview. “She did the test, and she did fit. After a long time thinking about it, we went and when they pushed her away in the hospital I was praying that nothing would happen to her. I got the kidney and it works 100 percent right, it’s fantastic!”

On his recent illness battle, the Austrian legend said: “I was in hospital until two days ago then I had permission to go home and I flew to Ibiza where I will spend Christmas with my family. I have to do six hours of training every day, helped by two trainers who don’t leave me for a second. But I am back in my own four walls, the air is clean, the weather is not inclement like in Austria. In a month they have told me I will be in top form and ready to go again. Doing what? My usual life – following Formula One, why not? I did not miss a single Grand Prix even though I was on lots of drips,” said the Austrian.

Former team McLaren said: “All at McLaren are deeply saddened to learn that our friend, colleague and 1984 Formula 1 World Champion, Niki Lauda, has passed away. Niki will forever be in our hearts and enshrined in our history.”

Hungarian Grand Prix 2014 https://www.5percangol.hu/kozepfoku-olvasmanyok/hungarian-grand-prix-2014/ Thu, 24 Jul 2014 11:28:57 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/hungarian-grand-prix-2014/

The Hungarian Grand Prix

This event draws visitors from around the world and the sweltering end-of-July heat cannot deter car racing enthusiasts. The race track Hungaroring is situated in the vicinity of Budapest and has been home to the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986. The twisty and narrow circuit makes overtaking difficult, therefore the drivers who qualify best have the best chance to win.

Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton hold the record by winning 4 races each in the 70-lap race. Hamilton is hoping to win this year again, because he is in 2nd place behind his teammate Nico Rosberg at the moment, which promises an interesting race. The leading teams at the Hungarian Grand Prix are McLaren with 10, Williams with 7 and Ferrari with 5 victories.

Tickets to the event are quite expensive and about 75% of the spectators come from abroad.  In 2013 over 250,000 people visited the Hungarian Grand Prix but this year the numbers will probably be affected by the re-opening of the Austrian Grand Prix. Guests who have a weekend ticket can take a peek at the pit on Thursday afternoon (July 24) but it is only on Friday that the practice sessions start. After three practice sessions, the starting position is decided during the qualifying session, which takes places on Saturday, 2 pm.

Although Formula 1 racing is the main attraction, the GP2 and GP3 series will be practicing and racing on these days as well. GP2 was launched in 2005 and serves as a feeder series to Formula 1 and GP3 in 2010, as a feeder series to GP2. These shorter races (17 to 37 laps, depending on the race) are a great way to prepare for a future career in Formula 1. In fact many drivers have gone on to compete in the real thing, like Heikki Kovalainen, Niko Rosberg, Kamui Kobayashi and Lewis Hamilton.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Grand Prix trophies were provided by the Hollóháza Porcelain Manufactory. With a few exceptions, the trophies have been manufactured in the traditional Herend Porcelain Manufactory since 2006 and they depict important Hungarian landmarks: the Parliament, the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle, for example.

Michael Schumacher ‘no longer in a coma and has left Grenoble hospital’ says his manager

Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has left the hospital in Grenoble where he had been receiving treatment after being involved in a skiing accident last year. The seven-times Formula One world champion had sustained severe head injuries in the incident in the French Alps in December, and was subsequently put into an artificially-induced coma a few days later. But his manager Sabine Kehm said in a statement today: ‘Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore.’

It has been 170 days since Schumacher was injured following his fall off piste in the French Alpine resort of Meribel. Prior to today the last update on Schumacher’s condition had been in early April which stated he was showing of ‘moments of consciousness‘. Last week it was reported Schumacher’s coma recovery had apparently entered a new phase with him being moved out of intensive care into a rehabilitation ward.

Surgeons battle to save Michael Schumacher’s life

Update 31st December:

An initial scan on Monday night showed "an improved situation" and indicated a window of opportunity for a second operation, doctors said. The family took the "difficult decision" to give consent for the procedure, and doctors operated on Schumacher for about two hours. A subsequent scan revealed a "slight improvement".

"We can’t say he is out of danger but… we have gained a bit of time,” said Dr Jean-Francois Payen."The coming hours are crucial. All the family is very much aware that his state is still sensitive and anything can happen." Doctors said it was impossible to give a prognosis for his condition for tomorrow, six months’ or even a year’s time.

Update: "We can say that his condition is life-threatening," Dr Payen, said. "For the moment, we can make no prediction on the future of Michael Schumacher."

The doctors denied reports that they had performed a second operation overnight. They said that they were waiting to see how Schumacher responds before deciding on the next phase of treatment. His body was being kept at the low temperature of 34 to 35 centigrade (instead of the normal 37C) according to usual procedure with brain injuries. The aim, the doctor said, was to "reduce the pressure within the skull. His helmet protected him partially," the doctor said. "Anyone who had had this accident without a helmet would not have survived this long."

life-threatening – életveszélyes

prediction – jóslat

to deny – cáfolni, tagadni

to respond – reagálni, válaszolni

partially – részlegesen, részben

to survive – túlélni, életben maradni

Seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is in a ‘critical’ condition after suffering a head injury while skiing. ‘He suffered head trauma with coma that needed prompt neurosurgical treatment,’ Schumacher’s agent said in a statement read to reporters at the hospital where the retired driver is being treated in the French city of Grenoble.

The German had been taken to hospital after hitting his head against a rock after a fall while skiing off-piste in the French Alps resort of Meribel. It had previously been disclosed that Schumacher was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident and was conscious while being transported to the local hospital.

The 44-year-old is under the care of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spine injury expert and also a close friend of Jean Todt, the president of Formula One’s governing body and Schumacher’s former Ferrari team chief. Schumacher is the most successful Formula One driver of all time with a record 91 race victories. He won his titles with Benetton and Ferrari.

He left the sport last year after a three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006. He lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children.

Schumacher suffered fractures in his head and neck when he fell off his motorcycle in Spain in February 2009.  He had suffered pains in his neck ever since and is understood that his ski accident on Sunday has impacted on his old injuries.

The Grenoble University Hospital Center said the retired racing driver arrived at the clinic in a coma on Sunday and underwent immediate surgery for a serious head trauma. He then underwent a second procedure in which surgeons reportedly drilled holes in his skull to relieve pressure on his brain as they battled overnight to save him. A medical source confirmed today that the 44-year-old was in a ‘critical state’ and that his health had ‘not improved‘ following a brain haemorrhage.
