The body of a woman who disappeared from her home in Belgium was eventually found thanks to Google Maps. Paulette Landrieux, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, vanished from her home while her husband was doing housework in November 2020.

Marcel Taret was the sole carer for the 83-year-old when he left her eating lunch by the television to peg some laundry on his washing line. It turned out that would be the last time he saw her alive. On returning indoors, Paulette was nowhere to be seen, sending Marcel into a panic.

After searching from room to room, he checked outside, knocking on neighbors’ doors in case they had seen her. Anxiously he called the police and less than an hour later was relieved to see a search and rescue helicopter hovering over his home in Andenne.

Over the next hours and days Paulette did not appear. Weeks turned into months until it had been two years since she was last seen. But an incredible coincidence helped solve the mystery of Paulette’s sudden disappearance.

The day that she vanished coincided with the day that Google’s street view camera car visited the town. One of Marcel’s neighbors made the connection and examined photos of the street where the couple lived.

In the pictures, Paulette can be seen walking across the street away from her home. Investigators traced the route that Paulette appeared to be taking and finally discovered her fate. Across the street was a steep hill that led down to a thick bramble bush. Inside the bramble bush, they found Paulette’s body.

While the search was going on, Paulette was likely trapped down there, unaware of what was going on or how to communicate. Paulette unfortunately died where she lay, waiting to be found over two years after her disappearance.

Welcome to our Channel NKC Insight. Today we are celebrating Left-Handers Day. The day rises to recognize who are using their left hand in a right-handed world. The majority right-handed of the frustration that left-handed people face while using devices designed for right-handed people. The day was created in 1992 by the Left-Handers Club in United Kingdom to celebrate left-handers.

Left-handedness was viewed negatively by previous generations, back to the Middle Ages, when lefties were thought to be possessed by the devil. In early 1900s, Americans believes that left-handers were more liable to mental disorders. About 10% of the world’s population is left-handed. Ambidexterity is rare and only occurs in about 1% of the population. Ambidexterity is the ability to use both the right and left hand equally. It indicates that a person has no marked preference for the use of the right or left hand.

According to a Journal of Economic Perspective study, left-handed people are more likely to work in manually intensive fields. And most notably, lefties are also called, Southpaws. Comparing to women, men are more likely to be left-handed. Approximately 11% of men and 9% of women are lefties. Scientists have long known that handedness is shaped by genes. But in 2019, they identified the differences in parts of the DNA.

The elder left-hander people can handle some of the tasks just as well easily compare to right-hander people. A recent study shows, brain involved in handedness have mood swings, restlessness, and neuroticism, a personality type marked by anxiety and fear that sometimes can veer into mental disorder. Even animals also have a handedness quality like, dogs, horses, domestic cats and kangaroos. Nearly 50% of dogs are left-paw.

The highest left-handedness occurs in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Western Europe about 10%. The lowest rates, 4-6%, are in Asia, Africa, and South America. Left-handed people are having several physical and mental disorders and health problems like, autism spectrum disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders. Twins are mostly left-handed, that the genetic factors explain 25% are left-handers, while environmental factors explain the remaining 75%.

Left-handed people have a big advantage in competitive sports like cricket, tennis, swimming. Lefties are highly smart and some of the most popular inventors were left-handed like Isaac Newton and Benjamin Franklin. Five out of the last eight US presidents are left-handers like, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Most people are actually normal and that left-handedness is not pathology. They are more creative and intelligent.

M&S faces possible court battle over VAT on viral strawberry sandwich

M&S’ new strawberry and cream sandwich – inspired by the viral Japanese sando –  has captured consumer attention on social media and is now under scrutiny from VAT professionals.

The sandwich, which is on sale in stores for £2.80 and available in the retailer’s meal deal range,  comprises of sweetened bread and strawberries-and-cream filling.

While traditional sandwiches are zero-rated for VAT, the sweetened ingredients have prompted debate on whether the item should be classified as confectionery, subject to the standard 20% VAT rate.

Simon Knivett, VAT manager at HW Fisher, explains that the sandwich’s characteristics could place it within a 1980s legislative amendment aimed at “sweetened prepared foods eaten with the fingers,” potentially triggering VAT liability.

This uncertainty follows previous VAT rulings such as the Jaffa Cake case and ongoing legal challenges over “mega marshmallows,” which question how sweet, hand-held foods are classified.

Adam Craggs, partner at RPC, noted, “The M&S jam sandwich may soon join this curious canon of VAT case law,” highlighting the complexity and inconsistency in applying VAT rules to food products.

M&S has not publicly confirmed whether it is charging 20% VAT on the sandwich. However, the product’s rising popularity and professional debate could lead to further HMRC review.

The debate has also spilled onto social media, with some users commenting on the possibility of HMRC taking legal action. One tweet read “HMRC are taking M&S to court over the strawberry sandwich absolute parasites.”

ALDEH! ALDEH! ALDEH!

Supermarket celebrates upcoming Oasis reunion with special Mancunian tribute

A rebranded ‘Aldeh’ sign has caught the attention of Oasis fans and shoppers alike in Manchester.

Aldi has changed the name of its Bury New Road store in Prestwich to ‘Aldeh’, embracing the Mancunian pronunciation of its name. The store is just a stone’s throw away from Heaton Park, where Oasis will be reuniting this summer for their comeback gigs.

The new sign has already seen Oasis fans, complete in 90s-inspired bucket hats, queuing outside the store, eager to snap photos of the ‘Aldeh’ logo on their phones. The rebrand is a homage to the Gallagher brothers and the city’s musical heritage.

The change was first noticed on social media. “Just on my way to do my weekly shop and what do I see? Aldeh! It’s absolutely brilliant” one user shared excitedly. “Oasis are coming home and this hilarious tribute tops it off… it’s a great time to be in Manchester!”

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, says: “Manchester is a vibrant city with a rich musical history, and with the Oasis reunion, we wanted to mark the occasion. By temporarily renaming our Bury New Road store to ‘Aldeh,’ we’re celebrating both the local dialect and the legendary band that has brought so much joy to fans worldwide.”

Oasis kick off their reunion gigs on 4th July, and will be playing in their home city at Heaton Park from 11th –20th July. The reunion gigs are happening less than a mile away from the Aldi store on Bury New Road, making it the perfect pre-gig stop off point for fans.

As part of the Oasis celebrations, the supermarket has launched a new range of Aldimania Bucket Hats (£4.99) which will be on sale in stores nationwide from 3rd July, while stocks last.

Michigan judge sentences Walmart shoplifters to wash cars in the parking lot

A Michigan judge is putting sponges in the hands of shoplifters, ordering them to wash cars in a Walmart parking lot when spring arrives.

Judge Jeffrey Clothier hopes the unusual form of community service discourages people from stealing from Walmart and rewards shoppers who could see higher prices, or possibly lose stores, if thefts continue. The car washes will be free.

Clothier believes 75 to 100 people eventually will be ordered to wash cars at weekend events at that location in March and April. The judge said Walmart is “on board” and will provide water and supplies. The company’s Arkansas headquarters didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment Friday.

Clothier said he was shocked to see the breadth of retail thefts when he joined the bench in January, adding that offenders were from all over Michigan and outside the state.

“I think it will be humiliating to be out there washing cars if you see someone you know,” Clothier said.

Walmart designated a parking space for police because of frequent calls about thefts, township Supervisor Scott Bennett said.

“It’s an innovative approach,” county Prosecutor David Leyton said of the car washes. “Even if it deters one person, then there’s some success there.”

And shoplifters won’t be the only people up to their elbows in suds. “I will be there washing cars with them,” the judge said.

Italian train operator Trenitalia left many passengers behind when it had a train depart nearly an hour early to arrive on time.

Passengers of an Italian high-speed train were left stranded after it departed almost one hour early — so it could arrive on time, the train operator acknowledged.

Rome’s Termini station had been full of travellers anxious about the effect of a national transport strike which stopped local buses, trams and the subway.

Thankfully, Trenitalia’s high-speed “Silver Arrow” to Genoa, in northwest Italy, was operating, scheduled to leave at 4:20 pm.

But when it was time to board, dozens of passengers searched in vain for the train on the departure board — only to discover it had left at 3.30 pm.

The train had to take a slower route due to maintenance on the usual line, the railway operator explained. But to arrive on time, this meant leaving 50 minutes earlier.

A journalist from the La Stampa daily was one of the passengers who failed to received a message on their mobile phones alerting them to the timetable change.

The newspaper reported the train had left the station half empty.

Trenitalia insisted only a “small number” of passengers did not receive the alert.

Either way, “the statistics are in order — one fewer late train, one more train on time (if not an early one)”, La Stampa wrote.

A Trenitalia spokesperson told AFP that passengers who missed the train were able to take the next one, at 4:57 pm, or claim a refund.

Trenitalia said its medium and long-distance lines recorded average delays of around nine minutes in 2023. The figure was two minutes for regional trains and around seven for international connections.

Przewalski’s horses have returned to the steppes of Kazakhstan after nearly 200 years, part of an ambitious scheme to reintroduce the world’s last wild horses to their original habitats.

The endangered sandy brown horses once roamed across Central Asia. They were named after Russian geographer Nikolai Przewalski who discovered them in the late 19th century, by which time their range had been reduced to only one part of western Mongolia.

Now, the Prague Zoo in the Czech Republic, which manages the studbook for the species, wants to begin returning them to the Altyn Dala, or Golden Steppe, region of central Kazakhstan, a vast area of grassland and wetlands covering some 7,000 square kilometres (2,700 square miles).

In early June, the first group of seven arrived. Around another 40 are planned for the next five years.

“These are the first wild horses which have touched soil in the steppes of central Kazakhstan in hundreds of years,” said Prague Zoo director Miroslav Bobek.

“We still have a long way to go, but this was a historic moment.”

Czech army planes transported the horses – a stallion and six mares – on flights from Prague and Berlin to the Kazakh city of Arkalyk, from where they travelled seven hours by truck, accompanied by zoo keepers.

The horses will stay in an acclimatisation enclosure for a year to learn to find water and food during the steppe’s harsh winters.

Przewalski’s horses had disappeared from the wild by the end of the 1960s, but remained in captivity. They have already been reintroduced in China and western Mongolia, where the population now numbers 850.

In Kazakhstan, the reintroduction is part of conservation efforts – the horses eat a wide variety of grasses, in turn spreading seeds.

“It is quite important to have these wild horses,” said Albert Salemgareyev, lead specialist for the Association for the Conversation of Biodiversity in Kazakhstan.

The woman from my childhood memories

She used to come over and fold laundry. I was probably five or six. She’d come over every few days, sit in the living room, and fold baskets of laundry. With five kids under the age of 15, there was always laundry to be folded.

Sometimes she read books to us. Other times we played cards, mostly Uno. I remember that her hands would tremble if they sat still too long, and so she liked to keep busy.

At church, on Sundays, she played the organ.  My older brothers would go over and cut the grass in her garden in the summertime. I was jealous that they got to go see her more often than I did.

When she passed away, her family gave my parents the little white car she drove. They gave me one of her dolls. And one of my brothers got the Uno cards. But out of all the things I remember about her, I remember the laundry.

I don’t remember her asking if she could help. She just helped. I remember her coming in, putting her coat down, and starting to work. When she ran out of laundry, she sent us to check and see if there were any more clothes on the clothesline.

With the clothes folded and put back in the baskets to be put away, she seemed to feel like her job was done and done well. She often stayed and read, or played games with us, but sometimes she just left after she finished her work.

She saw a need – what mother of small children doesn’t need help with the laundry? – and she helped out. Not once or twice, but consistently, for such a long time that I don’t remember when it started.

A pilot and explorer who embarked on an $11 million expedition at sea believes he has solved one of the world’s greatest mysteries: the final resting place of Amelia Earhart’s plane that vanished in 1937.

Tony Romeo, a former Air Force intelligence officer and the CEO of Deep Sea Vision sold commercial real estate to fund his deep-sea exploration of the Pacific Ocean last year when he combed the ocean floor with sonar technology in the suspected area of Earhart’s crash.

His team reviewed sonar data in December caught by an underwater drone from his research voyage and found a startling image: a blurry, plane-like shape Romeo believes is Earhart’s twin-engine Lockheed 10-E Electra.

The image was taken about 100 miles from Howland Island, halfway between Australia and Hawaii.

Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were expected to land there in July 1937 for a refuelling stop in her bid to be the first female pilot to circumnavigate the globe — but they never made it.

She was declared dead two years later, after the U.S. concluded she had crashed somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, and her remains were never found.

While the image is blurry, Romeo believes it is Earhart’s aircraft, given its unique shape.

“Well, you’d be hard-pressed to convince me that’s anything but an aircraft, for one, and two, that it’s not Amelia’s aircraft,” he told NBC’s “TODAY” show in an interview.

“There are no other known crashes in the area, and certainly not of that era in that kind of design with the tail that you see clearly in the image,” he added.

While it’s too soon to determine whether it is indeed the long-lost aircraft, it’s an exciting prospect.

Romeo’s team plans to return to the site this year or early next year with a camera and a remotely operated vehicle to snap better images of the site.

“The next step is confirmation, and there’s a lot we need to know about it. And it looks like there’s some damage. I mean, it’s been sitting there for 87 years at this point,” he said.

And returning is no easy, or cheap, feat, as the voyage requires expensive high-tech gear. Romeo’s voyage used an underwater Hugin drone manufactured by the Norwegian company Kongsberg, The Wall Street Journal reported.

In his last voyage, the expedition used an uncrewed submersible to scan 5,200 square miles of the ocean floor. The image of the suspected plane was found resting 5,000 meters underwater, the Journal reported.

“I think myself that it is the great mystery of all time,” Romeo said. “Certainly the most enduring aviation mystery of all time.”

Feline okay? The app that tells you if your cat’s happy

Cat owners who love to take pictures of their furry friends now have a new excuse to pull out their smartphones and take a snapshot: it may actually help the cat. A Calgary, Alberta, animal health technology company, Sylvester.ai, has developed an app called Tably that uses the phone’s camera to tell whether a feline is feeling pain.

The app looks at ear and head position, eye-narrowing, muzzle tension, and how whiskers change, to detect distress. A 2019 study published in peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports found that the so-called ‘feline grimace scale,’ or FGS, is a valid and reliable tool for acute pain assessment in cats.

“It helps human cat owners to know if their cat is in pain or not,” said Michel Priest, Sylvester.ai’s venture lead. “We were able to train a machine using machine learning and a series of images.”

The app could help young veterinarians, said Dr. Liz Ruelle of the Wild Rose Cat Clinic in Calgary, where developers trained the algorithm.

“I love working with cats, have always grown up with cats,” she said. “For other colleagues, new grads, who maybe have not had quite so much experience, it can be very daunting to know – is your patient painful?”

An app that learns patterns from images of cat faces can be helpful but cat owners should also look at their pet’s whole body, including the tail, for clues about their well-being, said Alice Potter from British animal charity the RSPCA.

“Cats that are worried or scared will hold that tail really tight and tense to them. And then aside from that, there’s also just thinking about their behavior in terms of are they eating, drinking, toileting, sleeping like they usually do?”

A mother has become convinced of extraterrestrial life after claiming a UFO has been hovering above her Leeds home.

Kay Thorpe said the alien object is reminiscent of the Tardis flown by Doctor Who and insists has been appearing in the morning and night above her house in the Yorkshire suburb Middleton for several years.

The 36-year-old said that photos taken by zooming in with her phone camera prove that the matter is not a star but rather an extraterrestrial existence.

Her photo, taken from her garden on December 16, shows a bright light and her social media feeds lit up with speculation as to what it could be.

While she has shared excitement at the prospect of her ‘proof’ of otherworldly movements, she has also shared concern as to what this could mean for her house.

“I don’t believe we’re alone,’ she added. ‘I think there’s something out there – I don’t think we’re the only species. The thought has dawned on me that something could be looking down on us. Because it’s been there for so many years I know I must be safe. Unless I’ve been abducted and my memory’s been wiped! A couple of people said it’s heaven’s door and we’ve recently had a bereavement so I’d like to think it’s maybe that.”
