Ingredients:

–       6 small apples
–       400 gr caramels, unwrapped
–       2  tablespoons whipping cream

Preparation:

1. Wash and dry apples; remove stems. Insert a wooden skewer into the stem end of each apple. Place apples on a buttered baking sheet.

2. In a medium saucepan, combine caramels and whipping cream. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until caramels are completely melted, stirring constantly. Working quickly, dip each apple into hot caramel mixture; turn to coat (heat caramel again over low heat if it becomes too thick to easily coat apples). If desired, dip again in one of the toppings. Place on prepared baking sheet and let stand until set.

Extra dips:

Pretzel: Dip in coarsely crushed pretzels.

Granola: Stir 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon into caramel mixture; dip in crushed granola.

Apple Crisp: Replace wooden stick with a cinnamon stick. Dip in crushed shortbread cookies mixed with ground cinnamon (1 teaspoon cinnamon per 15 crushed cookies).

Nutty: Dip in chopped toasted cashews, pecans, almonds, and/or walnuts.

Dare You Eat One: False Widow Macaroons

Dare you chomp into one of these macaroons featuring the creepy crawly of the moment – the dreaded false widow spider?

The arachnid ‘treats’ were cooked up by the Leeds-based alternative baker known as Miss Insomnia Tulip. She took inspiration from recent reports of sightings of Britain’s most venomous spider and decided it was “also a perfect time of year for grisly treats”. Miss Tulip says the abdomens are fashioned from a roasted coffee covered in chocolate “so they are nice and crunchy” and the legs are made from fondant icing. The Macaroon is coffee flavoured.

Here, Miss Tulip explains how to create your own Great British Gross Off by making your own: “These were a very quick make. Baking the Macaroons took the longest at an hour, while the spiders were 15 minutes each. I coloured and rolled a very thin sausage of fondant light brown, divided into 8 then tapered each end. Then I segmented the legs with a cocktail stick. I laid these (legs) onto a macaroon. Then I fashioned a head out of the same fondant using a cocktail stick and my fingers to sculpt the tiny pincers and mouth. The Abdomen is a crunchy roast coffee bean covered in dark chocolate; you can find these in most supermarkets. Finally I took some edible paints to add the markings and define the legs.”
