Sybil: Oh, no, I wouldn’t have thought so. He watches the football. Number 8, isn’t it?
Guest: Thank you.
Sybil: Are you feeling all right?
Guest: Not too good, no.
Sybil: Would you like a little hot something?
Guest: No, fine, thank you.
Sybil: Well, if there’s anything you need …
Guest: Thank you.
Sybil: That wasn’t him, that was a new one.
Basil: Good night. I said, good night.
Guest: Oh, good night.
Basil: Didn’t hurt, did it? Good manners cost nothing.
Sybil: He’s not feeling very well, Basil.
Basil: He only had to say good night. It’s not the Gettysburg Address.
Sybil: Basil, when you’re not feeling well …
Basil: Just two little words, dear, that bring a little happiness into the world.
Guest: Excuse me?
Sybil: Yes, Mr. Leeman, what can I do for you?
Guest: Do you think I might have breakfast in bed in the morning?
Basil: In bed?
Guest: Yes.
Sybil: Of course, Mr. Leeman.
Basil: Yes, we can manage that.
Sybil: Yes, we can. I’ll call you back.
Guest: I’m sorry?
Basil: Most of our guests manage to struggle down in the morning.
Sybil: A full breakfast or the continental?
Guest: Oh, I don’t …
Sybil: Our chef does a very good full breakfast, eggs, bacon, sausages, tomato, fried bread …
Guest: The continental.
Sybil: You wouldn’t care for kippers?
Guest: Fine, kippers, thank you.
Sybil: Toast, butter, marmalade?
Guest: Thank you.
Sybil: Tea or coffee?
Guest: Tea, thank you.
Sybil: Newspaper?
Guest: The Telegraph.
Sybil: Thank you, good night.
Basil:Rosewood, mahogany, teak?
Guest: I beg your pardon?
Basil: What would you like your breakfast tray made out of?
Guest: I don’t really mind.
Basil:Are you sure? Fine, you go along, and have a really good night’s sleep, then. I’m hoping to get a couple of hours myself. I’ll be up in good time to serve you your breakfast in bed. If you can remember to sleep with your mouth open, you won’t even have to wake up. I’ll drop in small pieces of lightly buttered kipper when you’re breathing in the right direction, if that doesn’t put you out! Basil!

Research Says Drinking Wine Is More Important Than Exercise

No one plans on living forever, but most of us would like to live as long as possible. The idea of adding more candles to your birthday cake every year sounds amazing. We’re here with some good news. You might actually be able to do so with a glass of wine.

Scientists have tried to find the secret to a longer life throughout the years. A study, named The 90+ Study, focused on the oldest of the old, that is, people above 90, to figure out what has kept them going for so long.

The team of experts was trying to answer several questions and to determine the factors linked to a longer life. Participants did neurological and neurophysiological tests twice every year, and information about their medical history, diet, activities and lifestyle habits were carefully collected by the researchers. The researchers found that people who consumed one to two glasses of beer, wine, or other alcoholic drinks per day had a 9-15 percent lower likelihood of dying compared to those who abstain from all forms of drink. Participants who exercised 15 to 45 minutes a day cut the same risk of mortality by 15-35 percent.”

Yet, they note that the key is moderation. Professor Jim Becker stresses the importance of moderation as well: “The data are generally consistent with the idea that moderate intake of certain kinds of drinks, and in particular red wines, is associated with certain positive health outcomes.

But that doesn’t mean that if you suddenly decide at the age of 70 to start drinking now that that’s necessarily the solution.”

Dr. Steven Lamm, MD, clinical professor adds: “Alcohol injures every organ in your body. It’s a poison. However, there is a paradox and that is that a moderate amount of alcohol reduces the risk of heart disease.” The Mayo Clinic recommends one drink to people older than 65, and two drinks to men younger than this age. Studies have shown that moderate consumption lowers the risk of diabetes, stroke, and death due to heart disease.

Therefore, feel free to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your lunch or dinner, but never go overboard. Excessive consumption can lead to severe health issues and a heightened risk of death from all causes.

A new school year

Father: Can you believe it’s already time for another school year to begin?
Mother: No, it’s unbelievable. It feels like summer just flew by. And the kids are growing up so fast.
F: Tell me about it. David is starting kindergarten this year. I’m excited for him, but also a bit nervous.
M: I remember feeling the same way when Laura and Kelly started kindergarten. It’s a big step for him, and for us too.
F: Absolutely. And speaking of the older ones, Laura is entering secondary school this year. That’s a whole new ballgame compared to primary.
M: Yes, sure. I can’t believe it’s secondary school already. Time really does fly. I’m hoping she will get used to her new environment soon. And I’m a bit worried about the increased amount of schoolwork she has to face.
F: She’ll do fine, I’m sure. But I think we should make sure she has a study space at home. Secondary school surely comes with more homework and projects.
M: Good idea. We could set up a quiet corner with all the necessary school supplies. And maybe we should encourage her to use a planner to stay organized.
F: Definitely. I don’t expect her to be very happy about it first but developing those organizational skills now will benefit her in the long run. I also think we should keep an eye on her social interactions. Secondary school can be socially challenging.
M: True. Maybe we can have regular check-ins to see how she’s feeling about her friends and classmates. Bullying and peer pressure can become stronger in secondary school.
F: On a positive note, I heard the school offers more extracurricular activities in secondary school. It might be a great opportunity for her to explore new interests.
M: That’s a silver lining, for sure. And hey, don’t forget about Kelly. She will be in for a whole different level of academics and responsibilities at university.
F: I’m both proud and anxious for her. She should make sure she has a good balance between her studies and any extracurricular commitments. But I don’t think we can do much about it except to gently give her some advice and hope that she’ll accept it.
M: Yes, she thinks she’s an adult now although she’s only 18. And let’s not forget about their well-being. School can be stressful. We should find ways to encourage open communication about their feelings.
F: You’re right. Maybe we can plan some family excursions and activities to help them relax and bond with us. It’s important they know we’re here to support them.
M: That sounds like a wonderful idea. All in all, a new school year means so many new challenges. I just hope we can guide them through these transitions successfully.
F: Well, you’ve done a really good job of parenting so far, and let’s just hope things will work out fine this year again!

Louis Armstrong – the story of his childhood

A Jewish family, Karnofsky, who immigrated from Lithuania to the United States, took pity on a 7-year-old boy and brought him to their home. There he stayed and spent the night in this Jewish family home, where for the first time in his life he was treated with kindness and tenderness. When he went to bed, Mrs Karnofsky sang him Russian lullabies, which he sang with her. Later he learned to sing and play several Russian and Jewish songs.

Over time, this boy became the adopted son of this family. Mr. Karnofsky gave him money to buy his first musical instrument, as was the custom in Jewish families. Later, when he became a professional musician and composer, he used these Jewish melodies in compositions such as St. James’s Hospital and Go Down Moses.

The little boy grew up and wrote a book about this Jewish family, who adopted him in 1907. And proudly spoke Yiddish fluently. In memory of this family and until the end of his life, he wore the Star of David around his neck and said that in this family he learned “to live a real life and determination.”

This little boy’s name was Louis Armstrong. This little boy was called Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong. Louis Armstrong proudly spoke fluent Yiddish and “Satchmo” is Yiddish for “big cheeks, a nickname some say was given to him by Mrs. Karnofsky!

Plans for a Summer Weekend

Greg: Hello, Helen! How are you? Would you like to come and visit us at our holiday home this weekend?
Helen: Yes, of course. That would be lovely. I could use some time off. We won’t disturb you, will we?
G: Of course not. We’d love to spend some time together and we don’t have any other plans.
H: I think we’d bring along our daughter Sarah, if it’s no problem.
G: Oh, no, of course not. Our kids are away at a sports camp, but I think she’ll have a good time anyway. If the weather’s nice, we could swim, play beach volleyball and go out for ice cream and cookies. There’s a really good cake shop nearby.
H: Could we go boating? Sarah would really love that.
G: Unfortunately, we don’t have a sailboat, but we can go pedal boating. Or there are boat trips to the other side of the lake.
H: I’ll cook something for lunch, so you don’t have to bother.
G: Come on, no need to worry about food. We always have plenty to eat. And there’s a really good fish restaurant on the beach. You should definitely try it if you haven’t been there.
H: Unfortunately, fish is not one of my favourites. But really, let me prepare something delicious for you. You know how much I love to cook.
G: Well, if you insist, I appreciate your effort and your cooking as well. Would you like to sleep over?
H: If there’s room, I think we’d love to.
G: The kids won’t be home, so you could sleep in their room.
H: What’s the weather going to be like, do you know?
G: The weather forecast says it’s going to be nice, sunny summer weather.
H: That means it’s going be hot, I suppose.
G: Well, I think, yes.
H: I can’t stand heat, I’m afraid.
G: You don’t have to worry about it. We have some beautiful big trees in our garden, we can sit out in the shade and there is air conditioning in the room.
H: That’s good, then everything seems to be in place for a perfect weekend. What time shall we arrive?
G: My wife is still working all week, so she won’t be up very early on Saturday, I’m afraid. But if you arrive around noon, that could be good.
H: Can you send me your address? And we will be there, thank you so much for the invitation!

A Fun Day at the Beach

Emily: Hey Alex, the weather is perfect today! Want to go to the beach?

Alex: That sounds like a great idea! I’ve been wanting to soak up some sun. Let’s go!

E: Awesome! Did you bring your sunscreen? It’s important to protect our skin from the strong UV rays.

A: Yes, I have it in my bag. Safety first, right?

E: Absolutely! Oh, and don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and a towel. We’ll definitely want to take a dip in the ocean.

A: Good point! I’ll grab them right away. It’s been a while since I went swimming.

E: Great! I’ll bring some snacks and drinks for us too. I love having a picnic by the shore.

A: That sounds like a plan. I’ll help you carry the cooler. What kind of snacks did you pack?

E: I packed some sandwiches, fruit, and crisps. And for drinks, I brought water and some soda.

A: Yum! I can’t wait to dig in. The sound of the waves and the taste of the delicious snacks will be perfect together.

E: Definitely! Once we’re there, we can set up our towels, relax, and enjoy the view.

A: It’s going to be so peaceful. I love the feeling of the warm sand between my toes.

E: Me too! And if we feel too hot, we can always cool off in the water. Just remember to swim where it’s safe.

A: Of course, safety is important. I’m really looking forward to swimming and playing in the waves.

E: Same here! And don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours. We don’t want to get sunburned.

A: Thanks for the reminder. I’ll make sure to do that. I want to enjoy the day without any discomfort.

E: That’s the spirit! Let’s make the most of this beautiful summer day and create some unforgettable memories.

A: Well, to make the most of it, we could do bodyboarding. The waves may just be perfect for it. Do you want to give it a try?

E: Why not? I’ve never tried it before, but it sounds exciting. What is it exactly?

A: The bodyboard is a small, rectangular board. It’s made of a combination of foam and plastic. You lie on it and ride the waves.

E: So it’s like surfing, isn’t it?

A: Well, it’s similar to it, but instead of standing on the board, you lie on your stomach. You paddle with your arms to gain speed and catch a wave, then use your body and legs to control the board and ride the wave.

E: I see. I think I’ll be just watching you first and may give it a go after that.

A: It’s a fantastic way to experience the power of the ocean. You’ll love it, I’m sure. Let’s just hope the weather stays fine.

Stranger secretly paid for everyone’s breakfast at cafe then quietly left

A stranger is being celebrated after he secretly paid for a whole café’s breakfast including fry-ups and cups of coffee, in an extraordinary act of goodwill.

The man – who will remain anonymous – footed the bill after he enjoyed a cuppa at the Market Café in Ulverston, Cumbria. After finishing his breakfast, he asked the member of staff if he could pay for everyone’s food and drinks. He didn’t want to make a song and dance about it, he just said he wanted to do something nice for the people in the café.

Joy McCormack, who has been running the café for four years said the kind gesture is what restores her faith in humanity. In total, the bill came to around £45, but it isn’t how much it cost which matters.

Joy said: ‘It was just an incredibly kind and wonderful thing to do. ‘We have a wonderful community here, and I think he was just touched by that. ‘I’ve never seen him before, he was just in his 30s, and there was nothing about him that stood out. He was just a nice man. ‘It was totally out of the blue, but it just shows there are some really good people out there. It was a lovely moment and it just restores your faith in humanity.’

After the event Joy posted online and said: ‘Yesterday a wonderful customer quietly paid for everyone in the café – they all got a lovely surprise! ‘Thanks to that kind man!’

Cat escapes Florida vet, takes nearly 3-mile journey home

A cat, still with anesthesia in his system following surgery, escaped from a vet in Florida and made the nearly 3-mile trek home to his favorite chair.

Bob Beasock said his cat, George, was at SPCA Florida in Lakeland to get neutered, and right after the surgery the feline managed to break out of a cage, climb a fence and flee into the wilderness – all while still feeling the effects of anesthesia.

“He still had silly drugs in his system,” the SPCA said in a news release.

Beasock and shelter staff searched nearly a week for George, but it turned out the cat had made his own way home Loma Verde, where Beasock found the feline curled up in his favorite chair in the carport.

“There was George – stretched out in his chair in our carport, looking like he had just returned from a grand adventure,” Beasock said. “He was a bit thinner, clearly hungry, but otherwise no worse for the wear.” He said George had to take a 2.7-mile journey home.

“He had to go through two or three subdivisions, around a couple of lakes, and cross five or six roads,” Beasock told WTVT-TV. “If I had been stuck there, I would’ve called an Uber. But George didn’t have that option.”

Yugo, a világ “legrosszabb” kocsija visszatér https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/yugo-a-vilag-legrosszabb-kocsija-visszater/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=yugo-a-vilag-legrosszabb-kocsija-visszater Wed, 11 Jun 2025 14:51:35 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=144092 https://www.5percangol.hu/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/5-Worst-car-in-history.mp3

‘Worst car in history’ set for comeback with new makeover

A budget car dubbed the ‘worst in history’ is set to make a comeback. The Yugo, which hailed from the former Yugoslavia, became the butt of many jokes after it was released in the UK and the US in the 1980s. It cost around £3,000, making it the cheapest vehicle on the market at the time. But the car was known for its poor-quality construction, lack of reliability and safety concerns and after an initial rush of customers, demand quickly fell.

Britain imported the Yugo for just ten years, between 1981 and 1991 and production ceased entirely in 2008. A book has even been written about the vehicle’s failure, called The Yugo: The Rise and Fall of the Worst Car in History.

Now a Serbian university professor is hoping to bring the car back to life, and unveiled a 1:5 scale model version at the Car Design Event 2025 in Munich.

Dr Alekasandar Bjelić, who owns the Yugo naming rights and is linked to the German automotive industry, hopes a fully working prototype will be showcased at Belgrade Expo 2027 and on the market soon after.

Designed by fellow Serb, Darko Marčeta, the new Yugo has a retro 80s look but with slim LED lights front and back and large alloy wheels. Mr Bjelić said the car would initially be sold as an ‘affordable’ two-door model, with potential for ‘different body versions’ in the future.

If plans are given the green light, it will launch with a petrol engine and a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. He hopes electric versions would also be possible at some point.

Mr Bjelić has promised a ‘fun-to-drive car’ that ‘meets all relevant safety standards’.

yugo

The first Yugo was introduced to the UK market under the name Yugo 45 and offered cheaper alternative to rivals like the Ford Fiesta and Austin Metro.

It came with three petrol options of different capacities, from from 903cc to 1,301cc, with a ‘convertible’ version also available. Four years after its UK debut, the Yugo was also launched in the US, where it was ‘a punchline’ within a year, according to Jason Vuic’s book on the car. ‘Within a year, it was a staple of late night comedy,’ he wrote.

It’s reputation fell further in 1989 when 31-year-old Leslie Pluhar plunged off the Mackinac suspension bridge in Michigan in her Yugo.

She had lost control of the car after being struck with 48mph winds – although her speeding at the time was said to be a contributing factor.

In total, 794,428 Yugos were manufactured, although a fairly small percentage of those were sold in the UK. Official registrations show there were only 19 on UK roads by 2018, with reports only nine remain today. In 1997, one reached a rather strange end to its life when it was catapulted through the air.

Cavalry officer Hew Kennedy and his friend Richard Barr built a replica 13th century catapult and sent the Yugo flying to showcase the equipment’s slinging capacity.

Another car that’s had its fair share of jokes thrown at it is the Lada.

The homeless man at McDonald’s

This evening after work, I was approached by this guy in the car park of the shopping centre. As I sat in my car, he tapped on the window and said, excuse me sir but can you spare some change for a burger, I’m homeless! My first reaction was, “No mate I’m sorry I’ve no change.”

His polite reply was” No problem, sir and thanks very much, I apologise for asking you, have a great day” and it made me think twice as he walked off across the car park. I paused for a minute, then looked to see where he was walking too. He actually walked towards McDonald’s in the square. To me, this guy seemed genuine and hungry. My first thought, he’s maybe a junkie, a drug addict looking to score his next fix. I drove out of the shopping centre and across to McDonald’s after him, to witness him looking on the ground for any coins in front of the restaurant. I pulled up beside him and said, sorry mate but sometimes I’m sceptical of giving money to people who seem to be homeless and ask for spare change, my reason is, that I think people just use the money for their next dose of drugs or alcohol. I apologised and I asked him If it was OK, if I buy him a burger in McDonald’ and his reply was, “Thank you so much.” I parked up my car and walked into McDonald’s with this guy, who I now know as Nathan. I asked him his name and told him to order what you want off the menu. He ordered a Big Mac Meal, and the customer assistant asked, “Would you like to go large?”.

Nathan looked at me and I smiled, I said, “Go ahead mate, no problem.” He even had the manners to ask. Nathan couldn’t stop saying thanks and when receiving his €6.99 meal, he was so polite in asking the customer assistant for salt and ketchup. I asked Nathan if was it OK if I joined him, we sat down and chatted for a few minutes. Nathan told me he lost his brother two years ago and his sister took her own life a month ago. He is now sleeping rough at the back of a school or college, in a sleeping bag! My heart went out to this guy. I asked Nathan if it was OK to take his picture and post it up here to bring to the attention of the public that, not all homeless people are junkies, or thieves or beggars. Some are genuinely suffering and need support. Where’s he going to get his next meal from and what challenges does he continue to face daily? It only took 20 minutes of my time and a few euros to help this lad and actually sit and speak with him for a bit. When I got up to leave, he said, “Thanks so much and God Bless You!” Those few words meant a lot to me.

Now I know there will be a few trolls who will think, I’m trying to be a hero. Well, anyone who really knows me, will be sure I’m not. I’m just trying to give one of our own Irish citizens a dig-out. Who knows when your luck could change? Never judge a book by its cover! Maybe my encounter will give people a different view on life.

The Story of the Mona Lisa

Mona Lisa is the most famous painting in the world according to most people because it is so often studied, recognized, and copied. The Louvre says that about 80 percent of its visitors come to see the painting of Mona Lisa.

Leonardo began painting it in 1503 or 1504 in Florence, Italy. He worked on it for years and then left it unfinished. He took it with him when he went to France in 1516 and was still working on it before it was bought by King Francis I of France.

The Mona Lisa used to hang in the Palace of Versailles. After the French Revolution, it spent a short period in the bedroom of Napoleon, but it was later moved to the Louvre where it is still on display.

In 1911 the Mona Lisa was stolen. The Louvre museum thought it was being photographed, but when they checked, it was not there. The Louvre closed for one week to help look for it.

People thought Guillaume Apollinaire, a French poet, stole it. He was put into jail and tried to make people think his friend Pablo Picasso did it, and he was also questioned by the police but it was not either of them, though.

It was lost for two years, and everybody thought it would be lost forever. Then it turned out that an Italian worker at the Louvre had actually stolen it. He had hidden it in his coat and walked out with it after the museum had closed. He wanted the painting to go back to Italy and be shown in an Italian museum. After hiding it in his apartment for two years, he became impatient and tried to sell it to a gallery in Florence, but was caught. It was shown all over Italy before going back to the Louvre. People thought he was a hero who loved Italy, so he only spent a few months in jail.
