Hungary is home to many movies’ sets, some of them you would have never guessed, but if you have an eager eye or ear, you might have spotted some Hungarian references in some of your favourite movies.

Budapest and Hungary, as a whole, is a beloved destination to filmmakers. The streets and landmarks of Budapest were used in many movies and series of several different genres. Huge names like Disney and smaller companies also make use of relatively cheap labour, yet high expertise and skill. If the producers dream big and there is no existing scenery for their vision, fear not, as Korda Studios in Etyek can build any set you can imagine.

The Last Kingdom

One of the many hit series on Netflix, The Last Kingdom also has some Hungarian connections, as the previously mentioned Korda Studios provided the main set for the series. The studio built an entire medieval townscape and thanks to the magnificent camera work, they can utilise the set for several locations in the series, and the set’s narrow alleyways and many buildings can provide for exciting imagery.

If you had a keen eye, you might have spotted a few Mangalica (a Hungarian breed of curly-haired pig) while watching the show, and if you pay close attention to detail you can see how some of the locations have very similar buildings, now you know why. Furthermore, in season 1, episode 7, the marshlands of the Severn look suspiciously similar to the bogs in Hungary which turns out to be Hungarian. There was a bog near one of Korda Studios’ locations which was transformed into a fishing village you see in the show, and a nearby lake was used to record water-bound storylines. Last but not least, as the main set was in Hungary, there are many Hungarian names in the credits; they helped make the sets, props and possibly many other things so the series could be as stunning as it is.

Lucifer

First, if you have not seen the show, you should check it out, it is incredible. Second, there is an unexpected Hungarian reference in the series. Lucifer (Tom Ellis), yes, the biblical character, and Detective Decker (Lauren German) team up to solve murders. In season 4 episode 2, they are solving a murder that happened in a reality show. When the duo is told what the contents of the victim’s stomach were, it leaves Decker wondering, but Lucifer knows the answer.

They were the ingredients of the Hungarian rum balls or coconut balls (it can really go either way by the ingredients).

Lucifer also mentions that he spent quite a lot of time with Attila the Hun, who could be related to the Hungarians. Hunor and Magor were once brothers, and they were the ancestors of the Huns and Hungarians (magyarok) according to the legend of the origin of the Hungarians.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Thanks to the addition of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film series to the Harry Potter universe, it is reliving its heyday. If you are fond of the books or re-watching the film series, pay close attention to the episode in the Goblet of Fire during the First Task. Harry Potter somehow was able to attend the Triwizard Tournament despite his young age. When they determine who will need to face which breed of the dragon for their task, Harry Potter draws the Hungarian Horntail, which, according to the universe, is a particularly tough dragon to face.

Iron Man

If you are a true movie fan, you might have noticed that when the directors or screenwriters need a foreign language that not many people understand, they often turn to Hungarian. Either by having a Hungarian actor or teach an actor a few Hungarian lines, it is often used as an exotic or gibberish language and unfortunately usually by bad guys. One of the many cases is in the first Iron Man movie. In the scene where Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) plans his escape, the terrorists go to the door and ask for Tony in Hungarian. In the Hungarian dubbing of the movie, naturally, these short Hungarian lines are in a different language. If any of you are a Marvel fan as well, you might know that Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) often mention Budapest, as one of their missions took place there.

keys/megoldások :
1. wake up; 2. wake up;
3. Looks like;4.
There;
5. returned; 6. Some kind;
7. gone; 8. wonder

Most pedig vizsgáljunk meg néhány érdekes hétköznapokban is használt kifejezést a párbeszédből!

1. ‘Wake up!’

Ami ébredj fel jelentéssel bír. Ha már ki is kelünk az ágyból, akkor már a get up kifejezést használjuk, felkelünk. Tehát ha még csak felébredünk és még az ágyban maradunk, akkor wake up történik, ha viszont kikelünk az ágyból is, akkor már get up történik 😊

2. ‘Looks like you got one, too.’ (to appear likely to happen)
Úgy tűnik, te is kaptál egyet (ajándékot).
It looks like
Úgy tűnik, esni fog.
De!
She looks like her mother.
itt már azt jelenti, hogy hasonlít az anyukájához.
How did she look like?
Hogyan nézett ki? (külső megjelenésére kérdezünk rá)
You look like a rich girl.
Gazdag lánynak tűnsz/látszol.

3. There they are!
Ott vannak!
Here they are!
Itt vannak!

4. It is time it was returned to you.
It is time + Alany + simple past: ideje lenne, ha ő valamit megtenne,
rejtett második feltételes mondattípus (hivatalos stílusban).
Tehát itt a múlt idő azt fejezi ki, hogy nem a valóságról van szó (ideje lenne, ha valamit megtenne)
it is returned to you: szenvedő szerkezetben, ugyanez cselekvő szerkezetben: Somebody returns it to you
Tehát a jelentése: Ideje lenne, ha visszaadnák neked/ visszakerülne hozzád.

5. Some kind of cloak
Ha a some után megszámlálható főnév NINCS többes számban, akkor a some NEM néhányat jelent, hanem valamilyen/számomra nem ismert” jelentéssel bír.
Tehát a jelentése itt: valamilyen fajta köpeny.
De!
Ugyanilyen helyzetben, jelentheti azt is, hogy a legjobb/ hangsúlyozza azt, hogy valami a legvalamilyenebb:
That’s some kind of car you’ve got there, Tom! (You have the best car, Tom)

6. My body’s gone.
My body is gone: my body has disappeared.
Tehát valami is gone azt jelenti, hogy az bizony eltűnt, nem látható.
Tehát itt: Eltűnt a testem.

Harry Potter – Platform 9 3/4

Harry looks at his golden ticket.

Harry:: Platform 9 ¾? But Hagrid, there must be a mistake. This says Platform 9 ¾. There’s no such thing…is there?

Man: Sorry.

Harry: Excuse me, excuse me.

Guard: {talking to woman and child} Right on your left, ma’am.

Harry: Excuse me, Sir. Can you tell me where I might find Platform 9 ¾?

Guard: 9 ¾? Think you’re being funny, do ya?

Mrs Weasley: It’s the same year after year. Packed with Muggles, of course.

Harry: Muggles?

Mrs Weasley: Come on. Platform 9 ¾ this way! All right, Percy, you first.

Mrs Weasley: Fred, you next.

George: He’s not Fred, I am!

Fred: Honestly, woman, you call yourself our mother!

Mrs Weasley: Oh, I’m sorry, George.

Fred: I’m only joking. I am Fred.

Harry: Excuse me! C-could you tell me how to…

Mrs Weasley: How to get on the platform? Yes, not to worry, dear. It’s Ron’s first time to Hogwarts as well. Now, all you’ve got to do is walk straight at the wall between platforms 9 and 10. Best do it at a bit of a run if you’re nervous.

Ginny: Good luck.

Harry Potter’s 20th anniversary to celebrate The Boy Who Lived https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/angol-harry-potters-20th-anniversary-to-celebrate-the-boy-who-lived/ Mon, 26 Jun 2017 14:59:22 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/angol-harry-potters-20th-anniversary-to-celebrate-the-boy-who-lived/ It’s the 20th anniversary of J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone.

Can you believe that it’s already been 20 years since we saw Harry meet best friends Ron and Hermione, take on a troll in the girls’ toilets and face Voldemort for the very first time?

To honour the beginning of Harry’s magical journey, lots of events will be popping up all around the UK for those looking to be spellbound.

We’ve already seen one almighty stunt in celebration of HP, when nearly 700 children broke the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed like Harry Potter in one place!

Not only that, but Rowling’s publisher Bloomsbury will be releasing four new editions of the book, one for each house at Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft & Wizardry.

The book covers feature the crest for each house and inside you can find fact files, character profiles and illustrations.

An exhibition is set to open later this year at the British Library on October 20 to celebrate everything fantastical in Harry’s world, too.

The one and only J.K Rowling herself also decided to add to the celebrations by divulging more information about Potter’s family tree, much to fans’ delight.

J.K’s official Potter fan site Pottermore also recently announced a Wizarding World Book Club, allowing fans to revisit their favourite books and discuss them online.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone was first published on June 26 1997 and since then it has sold more than 450 million copies worldwide in an impressive 79 languages.

This of course led to the magical movie franchise of which propelled Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint into the spotlight, as well as a highly acclaimed sold-out theatre production and several theme parks dotted around the globe.

And let’s not forget about all of that memorabilia too. Phew!

With that in mind, it’s easy to see why the Philosopher’s Stone has earned its own spot as a holiday on the calendar.

Facebook  also celebrates  the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by animating posts about the landmark book using interactive spells.

In a nod to J.K Rowling’s 1997 book about the world-famous wizard, the social media site is animating posts about the landmark book using ‘hidden spells’.

If users post or comment about any of the four houses – Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff – the words appear in that house’s colour and animated swirls pop out.

When users click on the names of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff- or type in Harry Potter – an animated wand appears.

Once the post is live, other users can click or tap the words and see the animation again.

The animation works on both the website and the app.

The names of other characters such as Dumbledore, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley do not have animations and appear as normal.

‘Harry Potter fans! We have a delightful surprise for you today in honour of the 20th Anniversary!’, the Books on Facebook page posted.

‘Simply tell us what Harry Potter means to you using ‘Harry Potter’ to find out what it is …’

A few Harry Potter facts:

The book, which was first published in 1997, has been translated into more than 79 languages and sold more than 450 million copies.

When it was first published 20 years ago the initial hardback print run of Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone was just five hundred.

For the entire Harry Potter series J.K Rowling wrote 1,100,086 words. Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone contains 77,887 words.

The seven Harry Potter books have sold 500 million copies worldwide.

Sirius Black is named after the brightest star in the Earth’s night sky, also known as the Dog Star.

This is very apt since when Sirius used his skills as an animagus he turned into a big black dog.

New Harry Potter Book and Play – The Craze Goes On https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/new-harry-potter-book-and-play-the-craze-goes-on/ Sat, 30 Jul 2016 12:03:13 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/new-harry-potter-book-and-play-the-craze-goes-on/ The boy who lived lives on. And on, and on, and on.

Harry Potter, the bespectacled boy wizard, has sold nearly half a billion books worldwide over the past two decades. This weekend he’s been resurrected for a new adventure.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child–Parts I and II, a play about adult Harry’s son Albus, premiered Saturday (July 30) in London, hours ahead of the midnight release of its script. With the return of the franchise come the pre-orders, launch parties, costumes, and all-Potter mania.

In Books of Wonder, the Manhattan store where JK Rowling herself promoted her first three books, five magicians, two face painters, a circus juggler, and three live owls entertained Pottermaniacs waiting for their copies Saturday night. The 36-year-old children’s bookstore ordered 1,200 copies of the script, and expected anywhere between 300 and 1,000 people to show up for the midnight release party.

New York’s massive Strand Bookstore ordered 1,000 books for its midnight launch party, and communications director Whitney Hu said that selling even half would mean they’ve had a great turn out.

The US initial print run of the script is 4.5 million, compared with the 12 million of the last original book, so it seems unlikely that the script will do quite as well as its predecessor. Still, the fervor around such a strange release has reached impressive levels.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the most pre-ordered book of the year, in print and Kindle, on Amazon, and the most pre-ordered book at Barnes & Noble since 2007, when the final volume came out.

Barnes & Noble reported that “Cursed Child” is the most heavily pre-ordered book since “Deathly Hallows.” On Amazon, “Cursed Child” has held steady at, or near, the top of the best-seller list since publication was announced in February, making it the site’s best-selling book so far this year.

The book stands apart from its early counterparts. For one thing, it’s a script, not a novel, and it wasn’t written by Rowling, although she is co-credited along with the writer, Jack Thorne, and director John Tiffany with conceiving the story. And the story focuses on Harry’s son, not the familiar boy hero and his gang.

Ms. Rowling worked on the play’s plot with the playwright Jack Thorne and the director John Tiffany, and while she helped shape the story, she has made it abundantly clear that she did not write the script.

The idea for the play, which explores Harry’s life as an adult and parent, didn’t originate with Ms. Rowling, either: She merely agreed to it when two theater producers proposed the concept.

Though it’s been nearly a decade since Ms. Rowling ended her beloved series, devotion among hard-core fans has never waned. While Ms. Rowling has moved on to writing adult fiction, she has continued to embellish the Potter universe, not just with material on her Pottermore website but also through public pronouncements about the characters.

The fans’ fervor has been steadily fed by a stream of blockbuster movies, theme parks, new short stories about the wizarding world released on Pottermore, and now, “Cursed Child,” which picks up with a scene from the epilogue in “Deathly Hallows,” as a grown-up Harry watches his own sons depart for Hogwarts.

Some booksellers and librarians say that the story’s format could introduce young readers to the pleasures of reading drama for entertainment. While most high school students are exposed to classics by Shakespeare, Sophocles and Arthur Miller, children and teenagers rarely pick up plays for fun.

“They’re going to discover how much their own imagination can add,” said Peter Glassman, the founder and owner of Books of Wonder in Manhattan.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first to be presented on stage. The play received its world premiere in London’s West End on Saturday, 30th July – (just in time for Harry’s and JK Rowling’s birthday on Sunday, 31st July) – but preview performances had already been hailed as a huge hit.

The show is already sold out until next May but 250,000 more tickets will be released next Thursday for performances up until December 2017.

Do you know all seven of the Harry Potter books? Can you match the short plots with the titles?

1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

a.   For twelve long years, the dread fortress of Azkaban held an infamous prisoner named Sirius Black. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort, and might even have assisted in the deaths of James and Lily Potter—Harry Potter’s parents.

Now Black has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter’s defeat of You-Know-Who was Black’s downfall as well. And the Azkaban guards heard him muttering in his sleep, “He’s at Hogwarts… he’s at Hogwarts.”

2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

b. Lord Voldemort has returned to the Wizarding world, presenting a threat that neither the magical government nor the authorities at Hogwarts can stop.

In response to his reappearance, Dumbledore reactivates a secret society which works to defeat the Dark Lord’s minions and protect his targets—especially Harry Potter. But Harry doesn’t want to be protected. Even as the Ministry of Magic denies his claims, The Daily Prophet discredits him, and even Dumbledore won’t look him in the eye, Harry grows more and more determined to fight his lifelong enemy Voldemort.

3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

c. Harry and Lord Voldemort each prepare for their ultimate encounter.

Voldemort takes control of the Ministry of Magic, installs Severus Snape as headmaster at Hogwarts, and sends his Death Eaters across the country to wreak havoc and find Harry. Meanwhile, Harry, Ron, and Hermione embark on a desperate quest the length and breadth of Britain, trying to locate and destroy Voldemort’s four remaining Horcruxes, the magical objects in which he has hidden parts of his broken soul.

4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

d.   The war against Voldemort has begun. The Wizarding world has split down the middle, and as the casualties mount, the effects even spill over onto the Muggles. Dumbledore is away from Hogwarts for long periods, and the Order of the Phoenix has suffered grievous losses. And yet, as in all wars, life goes on.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione, having passed their O.W.L. level exams, start on their specialist N.E.W.T. courses. Sixth-year students learn to Apparate, losing a few eyebrows in the process. Teenagers flirt and fight and fall in love. Harry becomes captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

e. Harry, an orphan, lives with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley.

One day just before his eleventh birthday, an owl tries to deliver a mysterious letter because he has been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

f.   The summer after Harry’s first year at Hogwarts has been his worst summer ever… the Dursleys more distant and horrible than ever before. But just as he’s packing his bags to return to school, a creature named Dobby the house-elf announces that if Harry goes back to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And it turns out, Dobby is right. Harry and Ron miss the Hogwarts Express, so they fly to school in a blue Ford Anglia.

7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

g. Harry is midway through both his training as a wizard and his coming of age. He wants to get away from the malicious Dursleys and go to the Quidditch World Cup with Hermione, Ron, and the Weasleys. He wants to dream about his crush, Cho Chang (and maybe do more than dream).

And now that he’s gotten the hang of things at Hogwarts—he hopes—he just wants to be a normal fourteen-year-old wizard.

But even by his standards, Harry’s year is anything but normal. First Dumbledore announces the revival of a grand competition that hasn’t taken place for one hundred years: the Triwizard Tournament, where a Hogwarts champion will compete against rivals from two other schools of magic in three highly dangerous tasks.

Would anyone like to venture a guess… as to what is inside?

SEAMUS: That’s a boggart, that is.

PROFESSOR LUPIN: Very good, Mr. Thomas. Now, can anybody tell me what a boggart looks like?

HERMIONE: No one knows.

RON: When did she get here?

HERMIONE: Boggarts are shape-shifters. They take the shape of whatever particular a person fears the most. That’s what makes them so…

PROFESSOR LUPIN: So terrifying, yes, yes, yes… Luckily, a very simple charm exists to repel a boggart. Let’s practice it now. Without wands, please. After me. Riddikulus!

STUDENTS: Riddikulus!

PROFESSOR LUPIN: Very good. A little louder and very clear. Listen: Riddikulus!

STUDENTS: Riddikulus!

DRACO: This class is ridiculous.

PROFESSOR LUPIN: Very good. So much for the easy part. You see, the incantation alone is not enough. What really finishes a boggart is laughter. You need to force it to assume a shape you find truly amusing. Let me explain. Neville, would you join me, please? Come on, don’t be shy. Come on. Come on. Hello. Neville, what frightens you most of all?

NEVILLE: Professor Snape.

PROFESSOR LUPIN: Sorry?

NEVILLE: Professor Snape.

PROFESSOR LUPIN: Professor Snape. Yes, frightens all. And I believe, you live with your grandmother.

NEVILLE: Yes, but I don’t want that boggart to turn into her, either.

PROFESSOR LUPIN: No… it won’t. I want you to picture her clothes. Only her clothes, very clearly, in your mind.

NEVILLE: She carries a red handbag…

PROFESSOR LUPIN: We don’t need to hear. As long as you see it, we’ll see it. Now, when I open that wardrobe… here’s what I want you to do. Excuse me. Imagine Professor Snape in your grandmother’s clothes. Can you do that?

NEVILLE: Yes.

PROFESSOR LUPIN: Wand at the ready. One, two, three. Think, Neville, think.

NEVILLE: Riddikulus!

PROFESSOR LUPIN: Wonderful, Neville, wonderful! Incredible! Okay… to the back, Neville. Everyone, form a line… Form a line! I want everyone to picture the thing they fear the very most… and turn it into something funny. Next! Ron! Concentrate. Face your fear. Be brave! Wand at the ready, Ron.

RON: Riddikulus!

PROFESSOR LUPIN: Yes! You see? Very good, very good! Marvelous! Absolutely, very, very enjoyable! Parvati! Next! Show us what you see. Keep your nerve. Steady.

PARVATI: Riddikulus!

PROFESSOR LUPIN: And next! Step up, step up! Wonderful, wonderful! Here! Riddikulus! Right. Sorry about that. That’s enough for today. If you’d all like to collect your books from the back of the class. That’s the end of the lesson. Thank you! Sorry! Sorry, you can have too much of a good thing.

A London tube map: the average rent costs … plus a bit of Harry Potter https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/a-london-tube-map-the-average-rent-costs-plus-harry-potter/ Sat, 03 Oct 2015 19:20:37 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/a-london-tube-map-the-average-rent-costs-plus-harry-potter/ A London tube map – the average rent costs plus Harry Potter

The quest for the perfect and affordable property in London seems somewhat impossible. Thrillist has put together a full rent map of the capital, showing the average monthly cost for a one-bedroom within a kilometer of each Tube station on the network. The result is quite shocking and shows clearly how expensive the British capital is.

If you’ve got big bucks to spend, you can rent a one-bed in Hyde Park Corner for £2,920 – because who hasn’t got nearly three grand to spend on rent every month? Depressingly, rent prices seem to be pretty steep even if you’re way out at the end of the line, as demonstrated by the fact that a one-bed in Morden is fetching £1,024 pcm.

The cheapest it gets is a one-bed flat in Hatton Cross, which is practically a steal at £324pcm. Sure, being that close to Heathrow means you’ll probably be driven mad by the incessant sounds of aeroplanes flying overhead, but at least you’ve got easy access to the airport if you want to squander all that rent money you saved on holidays instead.

It’s common knowledge that living in London is incredibly expensive, but there seem to be new housing market shocks nearly every week. The latest is the fact that at least two flats and houses in London are offering cramped under-the-stairs beds, reminiscent of Harry Potter, for £500 and £925 a month, respectively. An angered would-be tenant took to Twitter to show pictures she took when she went to look around a flat.

She said: “I have literally just been shown a bed under the stairs for £500 a month. #nothanks #privetdrive!?”

J.K. Rowling Wins Court Battle Over British Tabloid’s False Claims https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/j-k-rowling-wins-court-battle-over-british-tabloids-false-claims/ Tue, 26 May 2015 08:17:33 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/j-k-rowling-wins-court-battle-over-british-tabloids-false-claims/ J.K. Rowling Wins Court Battle Over British Tabloid’s False Claims

The Harry Potter author will be donating some of the substantial damages to charity

J.K. Rowling has been “fullyvindicated and her reputation restored” after the British tabloid Daily Mail‘s apologized to the author in London’s high court.

Rowling pursued a successful libel case against the Mail, saying they gave a “false picture” of a September 2013 article she had written for Gingerbread, a U.K. charity that provides support to single parents. In her article, Rowling had described her experience as a single mother in Edinburgh when writing the first Harry Potter book.

The Mail published a story ten days later alleging that Rowling’s “sob story” contained false claims about her time as a single mother and being stigmatized by churchgoers in the 1990s.

In May 2014 the tabloid printed an apology and paid damages but challenged Rowling’s right to give a statement in Court. This was dismissed before a Thursday hearing during which lawyer Keith Schilling read out a two page statement on behalf of Rowling. He noted that Rowling “did not at any point criticise or complain about her treatment at the hands of fellow churchgoers.”

A judge was told that the Mail‘s publisher had now accepted the allegations were “completely false and indefensible”, published an apology and agreed to pay Rowling substantial damages.

Schilling said that the newspaper allegations left the author “understandably distressed” but she was now happy to bring the libel proceedings to a close. He added that Rowling is donating some of the damages to charity, with the rest contributing to her legal costs.
