The food market is always a colourful sight but it is especially so at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The stalls are full of home-grown fruit and vegetables in every colour of the rainbow. A market is a friendly place where people like to talk to each other. Vendors are proud of their merchandise and they are happy when customers praise the selection of goods they have on offer. Goods at the market are usually nice and fresh and most of them come from your home country. Farmers grow them on their own farm or they have been grown in a local garden. Consuming food that hasn’t been transported from faraway lands is beneficial for the environment and your health as well. If you do the shopping at the market you support small-scale producers so that they can sell their produce and can have an income.

At the market, you can buy mostly fruits and vegetables, but other foodstuffs are also available such as dairy products, meat, fish, pickles, jams, seasons, herbs, honey and of course flowers. The vendors behind the stalls are eager to talk to you and they take their time to answer your questions. They give you advice on what’s worth buying and what kind of ingredients are the juiciest and freshest at present. They can even give you some ideas or recipes when you are at a loss about what to cook. When you go to the market take a basket with you; that’s the most convenient way of taking your purchase home. Don’t forget that markets are places where credit or debit cards are usually not accepted so make sure that you have enough cash on hand. Prices are not always set at the market, so sometimes you can bargain with the sellers. They may let you taste their merchandise before you buy it so that they prove to you that it’s really delicious and fresh. Even if bargaining is not a custom at the market that you frequent you can surely find good bargains if you don’t buy what you want at the first stall that comes your way. Fish for lower prices and do your shopping at whoever offers you the best price. Quality is of importance though, so the price is not the only consideration at the market.

If you are a regular at the market and vendors know you they may give you a good price or even lower the price for you because of the long-lasting relationship with each other. You can pre-order goods from them if they know that you’ll be there next week too, they will bring that chicken or whatever you need in the best quality.

All in all, the market is a great place and gives you a better shopping experience than hyper- or supermarkets where there might be a bigger selection of goods but you can’t expect any personal relationship or touch. They’re there to serve you with goods only but if you want to have more than that markets are the place for you.

Most pedig jöjjön egy párbeszéd!

LET’S GO TO THE FOOD MARKET! – MENJÜNK A PIACRA!

Woman: Wow! Look at that! What a nice sight the market is today. Such a big selection of fruits and vegetables. I don’t even know where to look.
Man: What do we need? What are you planning to buy?
Woman: I don’t really know. We need some meat, honey, fruits and vegetables, but I don’t know exactly what. Let’s look around first to see what’s available and to find the best price.
Man: Have you pre-ordered something from that kind lady you always buy the poultry from?
Woman: Yes, I have. She promised to bring me oven-ready duck. I’d like to prepare roast duck for your parents on Sunday. So let’s go to her booth first.
Man: So, we’ve got the duck. That’s a really nice one and it was a bargain. Where shall we go next?
Woman: Well, let me see. We need some potatoes, apples and pears, carrots and onions. Shall we go to old Uncle Joe’s stall to get those? He always gives me a good price and he is so happy when we praise his merchandise. He is so proud of his produce.
Man: All right, fruits and vegetables are all done and we’ve had a nice chat with Uncle Joe. What else do we need? Honey, if I remember well.
Woman:  Yes, thanks for reminding me. There’s a vendor a little further down this way. Her honey is the best and not very expensive.
Man: Are we done yet?
Woman: Well, almost. I would like to buy some flowers for the table and a nice bouquet for your Mum. She has her birthday on Sunday.
Man: What flowers shall we buy?
Woman: Roses and carnations. Her favourite flowers.
Man: I’ve enjoyed our trip to the market today. Let me carry the bags to the car, they are heavy.
Woman: Thanks, darling.

Attendant: Repjegy.hu, how may I help you?
Woman:Hello, this is Mrs. Chapman speaking. May I have a question? I hope you can help me.
Attendant:Yes, of course, just go ahead.
Woman:I would like to fly to Greece and would like to take my dog along. Is it possible?
Attendant:Yes, it is. But whether you can take it on board depends on the size of the animal.
Woman:How can the dog travel on the plane? What should I take care of?
Attendant:The animal must travel in a special cage.
Woman:What does it depend on where it travels? How big a dog may I take on board?
Attendant:It depends on the weight of the animal. If its weight plus its carrying case is not over 8 kg and the cage is small enough to fit under the seat the dog can travel on board. If the weight is more than 8 kg the animal must travel in the luggage hold of the plane.
Woman:Does the dog need a passport?
Attendant:Yes, it has to have an animal passport with all the necessary information about inoculation in it and the animal should be microchipped.
Woman:How much does transport cost for the animal?
Attendant:The price varies depending on which company you’re flying with.
Woman:Thank you very much for your help.
Attendant:If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to contact repjegy.hu again. Bye.

Summer is fast approaching, and more and more people start booking their holidays to get the best deals on vacations. Before I go on vacation, I always plan my trip. First, I usually have a look at some travel websites and review the popular destinations. Of course, I also check the costs involved in travelling to the place I like. If I want to fly, I compare the prices of different airlines. If I travel by train, I usually have a look at train passes and tickets. When looking for accommodation, I usually search websites and read reviews before choosing the right one. I don’t really mind staying at economic hotels, but I’m really concerned about cleanliness and comfort.  When I’m not sure about a place, I usually call to ask more questions.

Man: Good morning, madam. Can I help you?
Woman: Yes, please. I would like a copy of this key. Unfortunately my husband lost his bunch of keys and we don’t have a spare key at home.
Man: Well, let me check it. OK. No problem. Fortunately it’s not a special type.

Man: I can duplicate it in a minute. What kind of key would you like? We have got quite a selection of different designs and different materials.
Woman: I don’t think design matters in this case. I would like a good, sturdy, steel key that will last.
Man: Are you sure you don’t want to check out our nice designs? Our male customers usually choose this one with the motorcycle on it, or this car motive is very popular, too.
Woman: I don’t think my husband would care for either of them.
Man: So it’s a traditional steel key then.
Woman: Oh yes, and a spare key, too.
Man: All right. That’s five pounds altogether. How would you like to pay?
Woman: Do you take cards?
Man: Yes, of course. Shall I wrap the keys for you?

BUYING PUBLIC TRANSPORT TICKETS

tömegközlekedés

Man:
Good morning, madam. Could you please help me? I ‘m from England and I’ve just arrived from the airport by taxi. I’d like to do some sightseeing in the afternoon but I’m not sure I know how the public transport system works here. Could you give me some information about it?
Cashier: Yes, of course. The public transport system is well organized and dense in the city. You can easily reach your destination in the centre and in the outskirts as well. Buses, trams and trolley buses run frequently, and we also have four underground lines.
Man: How can I use them? Do I need pre-purchased tickets or can I buy tickets from the driver?
Cashier: Well, actually, you can do both, but pre-purchased tickets are a lot cheaper. You can buy them at a lot of places e.g. underground stations, ticket offices and there are more and more ticket vending machines available at bus and tram stops. You have to validate your ticket when boarding the vehicle.
Man: How can I validate the ticket?
Cashier: You have to punch or stamp the ticket with the validating machines. Look for an orange or red box. You will surely find one next to the driver. How long are you planning to stay?
Man: For a week. Or more, if I like the place.
Cashier: Then I would recommend you to buy a seven-day travel card. Or, wait. Are you a student?
Man: Yes, I am.
Cashier: Do you have a student ID?
Man: Yes, here you are.
Cashier: Then you can buy a 30-day student pass which is valid for all the public transport vehicles. Even if you don’t stay for 30 days it is worth buying it. It’s the cheapest possible option. It’s even cheaper than the seven-day card.
Man: Thank you for the information. I’ll take one then.
