A számok világa angolul nem túlságosan bonyolult, de vannak apróságok, amit jó, ha tudsz.

1. Húsz fölött a számokat kötőjellel írjuk. pl. twenty-one, thirty-six

Vigyázz a ’forty’ leírásánál, nincs benne ’u’!

2. Ha száz fölé megyünk, csak a tízeseket írjuk kötőjellel, a százas és a tízes helyi érték közé nem kerül kötőjel, viszont a százast és a tízest egy ’and’-del kötjük össze pl. one hundred and sixty-two

A százasokat nem írjuk egybe. pl. three hundred, six hundred

3. Nem írjuk egybe az ezreseket sem. pl. eight thousand.

Az ezres és a százas közé NEM kerül ’and’ pl. nine thousand seven hundred.

A százas és a tízes között viszont itt is ott az ’and’ pl. nine thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight

4. A nagyobb számokat számokkal kiírva vesszővel tagoljuk.

pl. 1,000 = a/one thousand

       10,000 = ten thousand

       100,000 = hundred thousand

       1,000,000 = a/one million

       10,000,000 = ten million

       100,000,000 = hundred million

       1,000,000,000 = one billlion

       1,000,000,000,000 = one trillion

Vigyázz, a ’billion’ magyarul ’milliárd’, nem pedig billlió!

Ha maga a szó, a birtokos ‘s’-re végződik, akkor a birtoklást kétféleképpen is kifejezhetjük:

1. úgy, mint normál esetben, még egy ‘s’-t adunk hozzá (jobban elterjedt változat)

– James’s wallet

– the boss’s wife

2. ‘s’ nélkül, csak aposztróffal fejezzük ki (kevésbé elterjedt változat)

– James’ wallet

– the boss’ wife

Kiejteni viszont egyformán ejtjük: /dʒeɪmsiz/

Többes számú birtokosnál:

1. Ha ‘s’-re végződik, akkor a birtoklás kifejezéseként aposztrófot teszünk az ‘s’ után, de nem írunk még egy ‘s’-t.

– The Smiths’ dog is barking all the time.

– The girls’ homework was excellent.

2. Ha nem ‘s’-re végződik a birtokos, akkor a normál, aposztróf plusz ‘s’ végződést alkalmazzuk

The children’s toys were scattered all over the house.

The women’s toilet is always more busy than the men’s.

Többes szám kifejezésére:

– It happened in the 1960’s. Ezt, ebben az esetben aposztróf nélkül is leírhatjuk. Így: 1960s

– How many n’s are there in Minnesota?

Rövidítésekben vagy dátumokban annak jelzésére, hogy valamit elhagytunk:

– cannot=> can’t

– do not=> don’t

– they have=> they’ve

– I am=> I’m

– 1995=> ‘95

– 2015=> ‘15

Használhatjuk az idézőjel helyettesítésére is, főleg ha egy-egy szót, vagy például ebben a leckében egy betűt akarunk így jelölni:

– ‘s’

– ‘mother’

És mikor NEM használunk aposztrófot?

Egy nagyon fontos esetet érdemes megjegyezni. A birtokos névmásokat csúnya hiba aposztróf plusz ‘s’-sel leírni.

Csak az it is összevont alakját írhatjuk le így: it’s.

A birtokos névmásokat tehát így írd le:

Its: The lion is licking its mouth.

Theirs: Does this computer belong to you?  No, it’s theirs.

Hers: My hair is black, but hers is blond.

Yours: I don’t have a pen. Can I borrow yours?

Ours: This cat is ours.

Back-to-school tips

The start of school is just days away. Is it too late to prepare your child, no matter the age? Nope. Here are some tips from people in the know about how to help ease that transition for your kids, their teachers and you.

Organizing

Involve your children with all the back-to-school organizing that you are trying to set up. Back-to-school is the best time for starting anew, and a way to ensure that it works for everyone is to help the kids create the systems. They can help put together what they will need in their homework station so they can feel ownership and pride, as well as a sense of accomplishment. This will hopefully make them want to keep it up once the school year starts.

A similar way of doing things with older children works, too. Have them help put a calendar together for the family and write out their schedule of activities, for example. That helps them feel in control of their own lives.

Safety

Nowadays there’s an important back-to-school safety tip that parents need to include in their discussions with children: What to do if a bully confronts you?

1. Try to recognize when someone looks mad or angry.

2. If bullies confront you, ignore them and don’t give them any attention; that’s just what they want.

3. Speak up. Tell a caring adult such as a teacher, parent, bus driver or playground supervisor. Once an adult is involved, the bully usually stops out of fear that his or her parents will find out.

Standing up for oneself is an invaluable life lesson for kids.
